  • In this video, I show how to install a door jamb extension. I build the door jamb extension for an exterior door installation. I will be installing this door in a 2x6 wall. The door is too narrow for the framing. To save money by avoiding buying a special order door for a 2x6 wall, I DIY my own door jamb extension. Enjoy!

    Thank u for the jamb extension tip at the end. Alot of vids i seen stated you could put the jamb extension on any side. Now I understand why u cannot.

      I figured somebody was going to ask why from the outside not inside. You are welcome! Thanks for watching!

    It was great seeing this video as you mentioned earlier. It's just like I would install it as well and actually cut just an 1/8" off the extension piece on the bottom to give that extra reveal. I love using flashing tape whenever I can for that little bit extra sealant. Most important is like you said, doing the extension on the outside is so important so you don't have issues restricting the opening of the door. Interior doors are the same. (In case you don't pre order extended jambs from a manufacturer). Been on many remodels and saw the extension on the inside and a customer asking about fixing it. Most of the time it was an error done by someone else. Figuring the brick mold needing to stay attached from factory. Ordering exterior doors with the proper jamb thickness can get costly and of course time for a special order.
    Great video as always. Thank your helper as well. 🔨🔨👍🏻👍🏻(One hammer that likes button for him)

      Yes, this is the video I mentioned in your last comment! As you more than likely know, doing a jamb extension is relatively easy, compared to other DIY projects. You are right, keeping the brick mold attached can be very difficult, but I find it does leave a better finish if you can do it. This door came with PVC brick mold, so I definitely wanted to reuse it. Often times I will replace the wood brick mold with PVC brick mold if it does not. Thanks for stopping by and watching David!

    When I was building, I needed a door for a 2x6 exterior wall. Building codes require that exterior walls need to be 2x6 where I am at. Can’t believe manufacturers give such little options without having to order something custom or special order.

      The door I want from home depot is just over 400 bucks. To get the exact same door with the larger jamb is over 700 bucks. A 300 dollar increase for 2 inches of material... total crap

    Also, I suggest you use low expanding spray foam. I’ve seen the expanding stuff warp doors and windows so they don’t work at all.

    I like all you did, but I like to caulk the jams as I assemble so it seals the joint and leaving sharp reveals. I feel caulking afterwards causes the joints to be rounded. I enjoy your professional channel.

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can put caulk while you are assembling the jamb. That would add a extra layer of sealant, and it can’t hurt! I’m glad you are enjoying the channel. Thanks for watching it!

    Not to be “extra” but you could drill pocket holes in the backside of the jam extension and eliminate screw holes in the face? Agree? Awesome video the channel is great!

      Good luck. Every box store and builders store around me only stocks 2x4 doors. Same door in a 2x6 jamb was $ 700 more for a “special order”! Absolutely BS…. Who buys a 2x4 exterior door in 2023??? Besides a manufactured or mobile home.!!!

    We had our exterior door replaced because the original door and frame were not plum or level, Unfortunately the new door is warped, we think? The opening side top corner is pulling away from the door frame and leaving air gap, that you can see light through and air, possibly even the odd mosquito and fly. We have called the installer and he has not gotten back to us? typically so I am afraid. IS there a quick fix? one that won't void any warranty? OR are we at the mercy of the installer? Thanks.

    No glue? Won't that line of caulk eventually split/shrink or pull away revealing two pieces (original jamb and extension) and then look like a scab job? Imagine this with a $10,000. exterior door...

    just saying that isn't how you use a table saw. You always want the cut piece on the OUTSIDE of the blade or the small piece can get lodged between the blade and the fence...
