3rd generation here nails are better for stairs,(but I'm old and screws have come a long way) but this is the best tutorial I have ever seen 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💪🏼📐 great job

My next project is our staircase to the second floor and I’ve never done stairs before but with this awesome in depth video I’m more than confident to bang them out now.

For the riser, that's the *excellent* part of the excellent laborer.. as a great catch.,. To be sure, checking height of riser board from the stores: 7.25 is lowes, 7.5 is home depot, just saying (cause i can) LoL

Scribing outside the square is the only best way as 1/8" off carroes huge error to the landing..
Noting the clamps should be required not optional!

Stairs are so rewarding when you lay them out with the proper layout. I've always used 2×12 as well to make them stronger. Skirt boards are so much nicer especially for the drywallers and finish trim work like you mentioned. I wanted to ask you a while back about doing a video like this. The formula is simple when you do them every day and of course each layout is different. The head clearance is very important as well especially to check with the code as well. Head knockers are not fun. Hahaha
The amount of stringers is so important too because having a bouncy step is not good and if you put the extra one in like you did instead of three, it covers more options for the finish product.
I always loved putting them in in sections instead of building them in one piece and trying to get it in place. (Been there and did that). Not fun if one stud is out just a bit.

2x12s are definitely the way to go! I remember my uncle had a set of stairs in his house from the early 19th century. They only had three stringers and it was 50 inches wide. They were so bouncy it was ridiculous. I would not even dare to carry some thing up and down them. That is the biggest benefit to modern day codes.
Oh yes, when you do them every day, it is second nature like any other job. It is nice to use the online calculators to double check yourself and as a reference tool.

I'll always follow everything you do and support the way I can. Great videos always and I save all of them for references. Great for keeping my health issues strong since the first stroke years ago. So glad I continue to make progress with memory things.
I can't imagine the days way back. We had a house that we did a complete remodel of Everything. The stairs going to the cellar area, (basement) itt was only for a furnace, boiler etc. The head clearance near the bottom of a set of stairs that were like a 12/12 pitch roof, the log beam at the bottom was notched out just to have a 64" clearance. Since we didn't try to change this, it passed inspection. No way to make new stairs at all. Glad it was only a 16'×16' area. Have a great week Josh. 🔨👍🏻

Can you explain how you figure out stairwell opening or make video about it?
The kind of work I do is remodeling and I said it's always take a turn to the left do you have pointers
Any ideas for me? I'm thinking about just adding a 2x4 below the run/riser where the meat is left on the tread and then mounting to each stud in the wall with a timber screw.... this way I have a 1-1/2" gap between the stringer and the unfinished wall. The drywall guys can just slide their sheets past the stairs and rest on the 2x4 and then I can do the same with my skirt board leaving myself a 1/4" gap to tuck in carpet... I'll have plenty of bracing underneath as well. What do you guys think?

However I have one issue I wanted to let you know about, at time stamp 40:38, you say " I am going to place sub-floor adhesive her on the treads", as you are actually applying the sub-floor adhesive to the stringers. Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to correct the error. Thanks for the very detailed video.
Iwill try to make my own stairs, following your instraction. and convert it in cm. So i understand 2x12 is 2m long x 12 inch wide x ؟ thick.
2 x 12 (in inches) means 2 x 2,54 cm and 12 x 2,54 cm =5,08 x 30,48 thus 5 cm thick and 30 cm wide and they sell at 12 foot lengths over there 1' = 12" so 12 x 12 x 2.54 = 365,76 cm=3,65 m (on rounding) or 5 x 30 x 365 (cm)

What is the thickness of the stringers. Is it about 4 to 5 cm enought?
Sidnt you measure to the concrete originally for your rise on the long stringers? If so, adding rhat landing now changes the rise, no?
Eric, the landing was added into the rises as if it was a step. I hope that helps!
I really liked this video but I have a question. When measuring for the longer stringer , why wouldn’t you take into account the height of the platform when figuring your stringer length? Or did you do this and not point it out. Seems like the measurements you took would be from the subfloor above to the finish concrete floor, not the platform height. I want to make these identical stairs to access above my garage so wanted to clarify. Thanks!
Awesome information. But it is not working out for me. 😢. Help!!! My measurements are 96.5 from the top floor to the bottom floor. So in doing the math I have a 7.5” rise and a 10.25 inch tred.
I have a 90.5 inch floor space to run into the 96 to the ceiling if that makes sense. I guess my question is do I have to have a 45° angle to start with many thanks if someone can help me with this.

My problem is that I have to build over existing brick steps which are not all precisely equal. I think I will have to make a template for upside down stringers cut to fit the steps, since I think I have to match the tread and rise of each step individually. My brain is smoking ! 😮 😊
Just get 1 common rise that will work for all the steps
@althomas314 The brick steps all vary in rise and run. Some too high, some too short. Also not level side to side. Had to find a way to make them all the same, but still rest on the existing bricks. Not easy, but doable.
Landing needs a ton of ‘blocking’ between those studs for ‘draft stops’
Open stairs built improperly leave oxygen paths creating a fire path…. A good builder takes fire draft into account in case the Inspector doesn’t catch it….
Why cant you divide the total rise by 7-3/4"?
I agree with another comment, why isn’t the runner measured to the landing?

I do find the american way of installing stair easier, but in uk the stairs come 95% of time are premade and are already fully assembled.
Where is your zip plywood tape applicator, for 140.00 .
The figuring you did was all good but I completely disagree with the way in which the stairs are built. Get the landing in, put a temporary set in with 2x12 framing, keep it off the wall 6-10” and run your drywall through. Do yourself a favor and invest in a stair jig or make one and router out the stringers and mount them over the drywall and do it right if you don’t want to hire a professional but don’t build interior stairs inside a home like it’s a deck.
These stairs are built quite well and good for this application. Stairs built per your suggestion are usually built by manufacturer's and at a production level, and they are pretty much slapped together.

your last step is 71/4 but your floor isn't finish, if you finish your floor with hard wood (¾) your last step will be 8"total.

This guy is a very competent craftsman…. He edges toward higher quality instead of going THIN…..
Be sure to select CLEAN Douglas Fir #2 or better timbers…. Knots will create problems you don’t want….
Needs FULL BLOCKING on the wall to prevent DRAFT openings….plus you need the ‘backing’ material for drywall FIRE STOP…..can’t do that later….
‘Front 3/4 nose can be a TRIPPER…
“Skirt board” will be VISIBLE so use beautiful material….
Be sure to TELL your Architect you want LARGER STEP WIDTH to at least 42” if possible….
