    Love my VG10 and 14C28N! Sharpens up great and fairly easily and holds an edge pretty darn well! S35VN is up there as well! Gotta use what fits your needs and abilities and go for it!! Thanks for sharing Jake!!

    I’m super late to this old video but your analogy comparing knife steels to cuts of steaks and how they are cooked is an absolutely perfect way of looking at each individual type of steel just like cuts of meat! You blew my mind with that comparison!!

    Nice video man .. well put together.:. I’m a CTS XHP, I love exotic Damascus and Damasteels, cpm M4, Vanax of any kind! S35vn is great... I think steels are over rated because of course the composition means nothing with out the right heat treat. But over all even S30v can serve ppl well. I think the best is ppl learn to sharpen

    This was a great video. I know when i first started looking into steel choices I saw a lot of the guys you mentioned but never saw just a user's opinion. Someone who just uses their knife for the task they set it too. I know people will find this useful. Great job.

    I’m new to the world of knives. Migrated over from the world of watches.
    Your vids help me cause I don’t know jack at the moment. I do have my first knife incoming. I’m sure it’ll be one of those moments right when I start carrying it when I say, “idk how I went 30 years without having one of these things.”
    Keep up the good work!

    I’m not very familiar with most of these steels but really enjoyed learning some facts.

    I’m new to all this, and I’m not spending more than USD150, IT is about the heat treatment AND ur personal main use for it., but I think the larger picture is which manufacturer has the best and most consistent heat treatment for any given steel.

    Are those emerald green scales on your shaman after market or is it a sprint run I just didn't hear about? I know about the rex-45 shaman with orange and sandalwood scales, but haven't seen that color micarta before

      This one was a treerex shaman but it’s wearing Seafoam Terotuf scales from Fireside Co.
      I have videos of the knife and of the scales if you look back 👍🏻

    This is super helpful! I still consider myself a newbie and I haven’t had a chance to handle many of those. Ever since I started I’ve been trying to get as many steels as I can. Recently I got s30v and 10v. Those are both great in my opinion. 10v is amazing. I think I’m going to try to get something in m4 next. I hadn’t realized how tough and how good of an edge it can hold. If it’s dlc coated like the freek, rust isn’t an issue. I think I’m going to want either a freek or maybe a para 3 with the jade scales. Those look amazing. Thanks for all the new info!

    CPM M4.
    I read some knife makers poo poo high speed steels as being the wrong application but I have had great performance as far as sharpening and edge holding. I wonder if the resistance to heat helps with the edge grinding process that ruins some edges.
    It also is quite tough, certainly tough enough for any knife duty. Not stainless but I never have a issue.
    If funds ever allow I would have a custom bushcraft knife in this steel.

  • @danielcluley870

    I love Elmax and Vanax.
    I just got a magnacut knife for harder/outdoor use, but to be honest, I haven't been doing too much hard use stuff lately, so not a good case for me. I will go with stainless in Florida, but I must say my Spyderco K390 is awesome. It got patina, but in a great way and gives it character.

    I've always been a big fan of S35VN and S90V. Certainly been enjoying M4. Find it a lot easier to work with than M390, which is a great steel in it's own right but just very hard to sharpen for me

    Oh cool this is going to be a good video. Steel y’all I’m sitting back. I agree with you I would rather have rust and have a great strong edge lol your like I stole this clip for this knife right here lol love it wow that super freak looks awesome bro!! I was thinking as this video plays.. I don’t know how it would be for you if you ever had to take a plan ride to somewhere. What about your knifes lol 😂 😳. A lot of Ferrari’s and lambos on the table oh yes the middle one is your favorite I do know that lol. Yes I remember that test with the super clean I think that was the knife. This was a very awesome video. Watched all the way through bro.. just keep up the hard work!! Your awesome. This was very interesting 10 different steels wow. So cool and again you sure do know your stuff. Your going to be that guy I just know your channel is going to blow up. You know your stuff and that makes an impact.

    I agree: if a knife's cost is above a certain point, I expect a steel reflecting that price, regardless of what the "heat treat boys" have to say. A perfect example of this (which I'm sure you've heard a millions times) is the Benchmade Infidel OTF. It's 400 bucks, but only uses D2 steel. People will say, "but it's heat treated differently than other D2 steels and because of that it's excellent!" I don't care; it's STILL D2 steel, and I refuse to pay that price for that steel.

    • @awesomereviews1561
      @awesomereviews1561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not normal D2, it’s CPM D2. It fixes the biggest problem with D2: the brittleness. But I agree that it’s way too expensive for D2, CPM or not.

    Just found your channel & loving it! …. But, Happy you don’t care about ease of sharpening, but why? Are you the worlds best sharpener or pay a guy to do it for you?

  • @mauriciolguin
    @mauriciolguin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good comparison. I also don't care about how easy to shaper a knife is.

    You gotta have that one lower end knife you can just abuse right? I have Onterio rat or however ya spell it with AUS 8 steel that I just abuse the shit out of scraping crap off my driveway kinda crap. I would never do that with my benchmade’s or my spyderco’s. Lol

    Come on man we all know 8cr14mov is the best steel around. It's the sharpest, always has the best heat treat and the edge geometry is always perfect no matter what the situation is.

    • @beardedgear

    The problem is you saying common steels you have no interest in. Do what your saying is you care about the etch on the blade.... because willing to bet I can hand you a knife in s30v a knife in 20cv and one in magnacut... no blades marked.. you would no be able to tell them apart in general cutting. In a cut test with a single media you would notice a difference between the 3 but not in normal use. What I got from this video is simply that all you care about is the steel name etched on the blade and that you consider what's marked on the blade is considered a "premium steel"
    I'm as much a steel geek as there is.... you count it against it if it's s30v but if it was marked m390 you would call "top tier" but you would happily buy a new 400 dollar China m390 knife and be happy but an s30v knife from spyderco will almost guaranteed out cut that chinw m390 knife.... again all you are saying in this video is you care what's stamped on the blade so long as it's considered premium.... why could you consider 3v a top teir steel? It literally has no purpose in a 3-3.5 inch folder, it's toughness advantage isn't of use unless it's ground thin where the toughness will show you a performance benefit.

    Majority of these “high-end” steels are simply in that category, because they are exotic which also makes them expensive. I think the knife community should really stop obsessing about these super steels because it only raises their price when in reality they are not worth the price. You say we shouldnt bring up heat treat, but it truly is more important than bunch of letters and Numbers of the steel. M390 is a steel full of chromium carbides, its just too brittle when heat treated right which it 90% of time isn’t. Even Larrin Thomas himself said that it is the most overhyped steel of 21st century, made with 90s metallurgical knowledge. Its just funny you think you can spot a difference in their performance, i actually measured how much i can cut with each steel before it becomes dull. Kapara S30V due to geometry and TBE cuts as much as that thick Rex45 on Shaman or Gintmouse M390. Of all the knives you have there only TRM, Kapara and Quiet carry actually offer good geometries and good cutting performances. The others are more for the eye than for the hand for that kind of money.
