      Love the breakdown, I'd say I agree with most of the grading. (I'd only bump H1 because it's a perfect one-&-done truck knife. I leave it in there all seasons and never think about it. EDC though, not good at all). That said, I got to the end and was waiting for 20CV on the list. Is that a steel you are avoiding? I thought since it was the M390 killer, for sure you might lean in on it. Also, thanks for making me care about Hinderer and Demko, I think my collection was manageable, but now you are pushing me to different makers.

      @@dfoste1487 see m390 or 20cv, they’re extremely similar metal compositions from 3 different manufacturers. In my own personal experience as an idiot that likes knives, the heat treat and grind makes the bigger difference between the 3.

    Dude this was a super interesting video, so much info I'm sure I'll have to go back through and watch it again. I pretty much only bought knives in stainless steel (M390, S30/S35VN, Elmax, etc.) until I started watching a bunch of your videos talking about how awesome some of these non-corrosion resistant steels can be. So I decided to try a Cru Wear Para 3 and now I am 100% sold on those type of blade steels. I never realized how much I was missing out on by only going for stainless steels. But I live in Northern Cali, in the valley not anywhere close to the coast, and I've got the Cru Wear Para 3 and a PM2 and Lil Native in M4 and have had literally 0 corrosion issues. I oil them every couple of days or after I use them hard and that seems to do the trick. Keep up the great content, I'm stoked to see how fast this channel is growing.

    MC , you have no idea how happy I was to hear you say "some people say VG-10 is very similar to 154cm". I'm one of those people ! When I first got into EDC knives I bought a Spyderco Endura 4 & a Benchmade 940 in 154cm. Long story short the VG-10 on the Endura 4 was sharper out the box , stayed sharper longer , was easier to sharpen & I could get a sharper finished edge than with the 154cm. Same results with the VG-10 that came on the S.O.G. X-Ray Vision. It was such an obvious difference to me to the point where I purposely stay away from knives made in 154cm.

    • @marshallmaia8130

      So would you say the problem with 154cm is it’s not easy to sharpen? I have the same problem with d2 but I’m looking to purchase a knife in 154cm but it also comes in m390 for $60 more..

  • @TheCrimsonWolf

    I just love it. All the info, the attitude, the stories, I loved hearing about it. I do not own any cool knives (a cool knife being an actual knife and not an imitation knife box cutter) at all, but very recently I've decided that I would love to make the jump and purchase something I would love showing off. Your experiences in this video have been SO informative, and helped me select the perfect knife for me.
    I unfortunately have Hyperhidrosis, which means that any blade I hold or touch that doesn't have much corrosion resistance will probably crap up since I SWEAT like an orangutan in the Sahara idk

  • @xdfanatic
    @xdfanatic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Interesting ranking, the one thing that i didn't understand was why you ranked S30V 2 tiers below S35VN when most agree that there is little practical difference between those two steels. you probably have more experience with knives than I do, but i have several knives with both of those steels and don't really notice a significant difference between edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness, or sharpening.
    Did you skip 420HC? so many of us are forced to use that steel at times because of leatherman tools.

  • @Xerber85

    This is a video I wish was available when I got into knives. After owning and using around 50+ of them in the last four years, I couldn’t agree more with many of your points.
    Like many knife users, I started out with a focus on super steels. Now I rarely use knives like my S110V Spyderco’s because I hate to sharpen them and much rather use mid tier steels instead. Exception to this rule is when I’m gifting a knife to someone I know won’t sharpen it themselves. Then edge retention becomes a priority.

      Like, 10× better. However, 154CM and 440C can be mirror polished, whereas CPM-10V sadly cannot. This may give the former steels much better corrosion resistance. Otherwise, 10V is better in every (!) one respect. Like, 10× better.

    Definitely with you on CPM-154 being as great as it is, along with AEB-L, RWL-34 and Damasteel. They take on and keep a razor sharp edge for what seems like forever, plus they’ve got tons of toughness to boot. There’s a reason why it’s the steel of choice for so many kitchen knife makers.

    • @michaell397
      @michaell397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      RWL-34 steel was developed by my mentor years ago. It is a fine, competent steel. A little hard to heat treat perfectly though. RWL-34= Robert (Bob) W. Loveless. He also introduced 154-CM to knifemaking, and flew to Japan and talked Hitachi into producing ATS-34, the equivalent of 154-cm when it became hard to get for a while.
      For the best edge retention on these steels, we found that a 600p grit then lightly stropped worked very well and gave it a very toothy edge. Even more can be accomplished by using a 300 t 400 grit on one side of the blade, and 600 to 1000 on the other an lightly stropped. It can more than double the edge holding of the edge.

    Lived 100' from the water in Florida for 5 years and carried a Benchmade 810 in M4 every day at work (Police) ever since. A little oil and care like once in a blue moon goes a long way 😂... I've even taken it on the jetski multiple times in saltwater and it's survived. Just a good rinse and she keeps on ticking. Actually had the knife 10 years now and it's a freaking beast. Cut off pieces from wrecked cars, saved a baby and a few dogs with the built in glass breaker over the years... M4 is definitely my favorite steel.

    I've noticed that 3V is pretty stainless. I have a bradford guardian 3 and 4 with uncoated 3V. The guardian 4 has lived in a leather sheath and I've had them for about a year, no blemishes or hints of oxidation. Noted, I don't live in a humid area (did carry the g3 for two months in midland Texas which gets very humid), and they're like a polished stonewash, but there's no signs of patina. Also very easy to sharpen and holds its edge fairly well

    Thumbs up from the guy who used a Kershaw leek for 8 years. Sandvik 14c28n is one of my favorite steels. And whenever I sharpen my leek the edge feels like shattered glass. I usually just take it out to open a box or something and that's it. No fidgeting at all, no funny business, I'm freakin scared of the thing. I once closed it and accidentally sliced off a callus on my thumb, gladly it wasn't enough to make me bleed, but I was in disbelief of what happened for a few seconds. Now that I work at sportsman's warehouse, people wonder why I usually buy kershaws instead of CRKTs and Benchmades. It's simple, the steel, the lifetime warranty, and I used one for years.

    I get the theoretical part but did you actually experience a lot of chipping on S110V? i've gone with the Para 3 in S110V to cut plastic wrap of hardened steel frames at work, being under tension it sometimes just explodes off and i've ended up banging the edge against hardened steel rods multiple times, still has the factory edge on it, pretty much completely unchanged. I have however now switched to the Native 5 Salt in LC200N as i'm more worried about straight up snapping the Para's blade in half and corrosion being a big issue for me, D2 and below resistance is completely out of the picture, an hour in my pockets at work, sweating and living close to the ocean, it already has actual rust on it unless i leave a thick film of oil on there. A patena like on your Maxamet i wouldn't mind at all however.
    I did just get my first 154CM blade, a Civivi Baklash with brass scales, because you praise it so much and have been enjoying it quite a bit, though i do expect it would also rust at work. Rest of your list i pretty much agree with. Love S35VN and 14C28N, don't care much for M390.

      S110V has been my absolute worst experience when it comes to chipping. I used to EDC a full ti PM2 in S110V and it was an absolute nightmare. Same with my S110V Native 5, and S110V Manix 2. I think I'm done with it forever.

    • @AronMouz
      @AronMouz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metal_complex i've had that experience with S90V, the Para 3 is the only S110V knife i own, maybe the heat treatment is bad on mine, plastic wrap doesn't really dull lesser steels either, but then again, there is no discernable damage to the edge at all, feels like the kind of steel you could strike a ferro rod with, using the edge. Since its out of the work rotation i'll start using it for cardboard and opening packages, maybe it does worse against that than it did steel.

    • @michaell397
      @michaell397 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odd. I can re-sharpen a s90v blade in under 5 minutes. And this includes getting out my stones and cleaning and putting them away. Proper stones for the proper steels people!
      Sometimes it takes longer. Why? because I enjoy it and find it relaxing.
      But then again, I use knives for real cutting. Not just cardboard and twine. What ever the hell twine is. (Real twine was what the postal office used to use. It is a very thin, grassy cord. No one really uses it any longer. I haven't seen real twine in years).

    I think everyone should check out big brown bear. He does a good job of showing that just because something is commonly believed about a steel doesn't mean its necessarily true. Like so and so steel is too brittle, so and so steel is too hard to sharpen, so and so steel doesn't hold an edge. There are no hard and fast answers.
    A decently thinly ground s110v or maxamet knife will sharpen easier than a super thick m390 blade for example.
    Also a well heat treated knife with good edge stability will make it less likely to chip than a poorly heat treated knife.
    He also has a plethora of general sharpening, and steel knowledge in general.

    Need some advice here: Yesterday I was touching up for the first time a fairly new code 4 with s35 using a work sharp precision kit starting with a 600 stone because it’s only a touch up. I use marker on the edge to get to know the correct angle and it turned out to be 17, then I flipped the knife and on the other side the same 17 degrees only removed a small portion of the marker (only the closest to the cutting edge). I checked the mounting position and centering and seemed fine to me and the grind to the naked eye seems even on both sides, I don’t know what’s happening, never had this problem before with my other knives 🤨
