      What I have found is that once you spend above $200-$300 the quality doesn't go up. Like a Rolls Royce. They are fancy, but less reliable than a honda or good f150.

    I love my Civivis, but if I had to pick a "one and done" around that price range, I'd have to go with the Rat 1 in D2. The Elementum is nicer as far as looks go, but the Rat 1 beats it in terms of versitility. But that's just, like, my opinion man.

    • @bena3341
      @bena3341 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea agreed. If I can only have one knife I need to have a full 4 finger grip and a lot of durability. And the Rat fills those requirements a lot better than the Elementum. I would go the Praxis over the Elementum for a Civivi only one knife.

Smooth as butter, holds a great edge, lightweight and I can't think of another knife with a 3" blade that disappears in the pocket the way the 940 does. Honestly, nobody ever asks me anything.....and I'm happy about it. I have decided that, after 70 years of buying stuff cuz I thought it was neat, cool, or rad, that I far prefer the old crappy worn and beat-up stuff that I've used the hell out of. So, I don't buy much any more. A new finish on anything is no where near as valuable to me as something that has my spit, sweat, and schmutz all over it. In case anybody asks, I far prefer stuff with personal stories attached.

    "I'm not a steel snob but... I'll only carry the Elementum in S35VN..." :)))
    The advantage of the Small Sebenza 31 over the Large 21 (or 31) is the Small 31 is legal to carry in more jurisdictions due to the sub 3" blade length. I'm with you on the Sebenza if I could only have one. One small, one large. Case closed.

    I was stuck between the Para 2 and Manix 2 lightweight. I liked the ergos of the Para 2 better. Ultimately the lock was the deciding factor. The lock on the Para rubs my finger when opening the knife. The Manix ergos are really good, the weight is great and the lock is easy to adapt to. I sourced o e from a local knife shop for $145. I've got several folding knives. Yes, only several. Native 5 is the last knife I need. I'll buy another one if I wear this one out, or sooner if they make one with a compression lock. This is coming from a guy that carried an Endura for 25 years.

    • @blairtaylor9552
      @blairtaylor9552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to second that. I EDC my native 5 every workday (tho it is special- sprint run/CF/S110V). You never really need any larger SLICER blade than it has, and with the full choil, I also have full grip and full control even with large hands, being 6'-4". It's just small enough to be non-threatening to most of the general public & easily goes un-noticed in the pocket. (PS: I ALSO bought a second IDENTICAL Native 5 sprint; in case I ever lose it I have an immediate replacement!!!). I have a couple larger carries for outdoors/weekends, but not really appropriate during the work week. I sold a BM943 (un-satisfying feel and sound, like a toy, next to any well-built hard use knife). So no desire for Benchmade. Also won't own another ZT- I've had a couple apart and have seen the miniature PB flat washers they used to guide the blade, so not fond of ZT internals at all. I don't like knives that are mechanically marginal and designed to sell on looks alone. I like knives built as well as Hinderer or CR, though I'm not drawn to their particular style. I also prefer having just a few premium knives, over a junk drawer full of less desireables (buy once, cry once).

    I've my hinderer xm-18 and firetac but if I literally could only have one knife period, it might be my old school standard 154cm griptilian. Mine is thrashed and it keeps coming back for more. I have a hard time using a $400 knife as hard as I use the grip. I do concrete work and excavating for a living so stuff gets beat up pretty good.

    • @Pepsiaddicto
      @Pepsiaddicto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      z z you’re the first I’ve heard say that. Every one I know who uses Sebenza’s daily knows they have to sharpen them a lot. Not hard to sharpen, I just hate having to sharpen a $400 knife twice as often as a $100 Spyderco with the same steel. There is a reason the BG-42 ones are in such high demand, they were actually tempered right and hold an edge way better.

    Solid recs! I am surprised you didn’t mention the R2D2 in the budget category. And my choice if I could only have 1 would be my 940-1, because it has the most blade real estate of a knife you can’t even feel yourself carrying, and also because I’m a lefty so the axis lock stuff is great for that. Runners up, under the same logic and fun fidget factor would be the large or small Ritter Hogue. I own both and love both.

    • @Thisisausername556
      @Thisisausername556 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@butcheredalive I mean, I've got medium-ish sized man hands, though I usually wear large gloves. It fits my hands well with some room to spare. The small blade makes you think the handle will be small, but it's plenty big for most people.
      I haven't owned a Manix 2, but it's on my list of potential spyderco knives. Especially because it's still available in Spy27, which I've heard is pretty great.
      I would personally recommend starting with the Para 3 if you haven't had a compression lock knife before. Then if you like it, venture into Spyderco's other offerings. If you've already experienced the compression lock and aren't a huge fan, then I'd say the Manix is an easy choice to make.

    When I thought about it, like really thought about it, I had to admit to myself that the best, "if I could only own one knife" knife it would be a lame victorinox SD. It just fits in to more situations because of its size, weight, and versatility. It's as good in the boardroom as it is in deep "haven't seen another human in two weeks" field work. Second to that I do love my boker spillo.

    Having said that, I would argue for these in the less expensive ranges: Buck 110, Victorinox Huntsman SAK, Rough Ryder Reserve Common Stock, Cold Steel AD10, Lionsteel TM1. And, one should not forget the KaBar Mule, or the the original SOG Tomcat.
    Just sayin’. I was shocked & dismayed that none of these made your list either as the selected knife in these price ranges or one of the alternatives. 😀
