  • Canvas, paper, wood, there are so many options to paint on when you are using acrylic and oil. Today I will go over 4 of the most commonly used surfaces and pros and cons for each. In the end you need to choose what your surface has the texture you want and the price you can afford.
In the comment section below, let me know what you are interested in learning how to paint, what techniques you want to learn, and any questions you have about painting with acrylic or oil and the supplies that you use.

Really helpful and informative. I mainly use Stretched canvas, canvas board, and acid-free acrylic paper.
Now I want to try wood panel too!!

Thanks. Helpful. As I'm still honing my skills, I haven't painted on many surfaces - mainly thick drawing paper, those flat canvas-textured boards, & clay pottery. I'd like to try wooden nesting dolls at some point. My favorite (painting) medium is Acrilycs & I'd love to see tutorials on color blending, stroke techniques, how to work from light to dark & vice versa. Watercolors, though beautiful, are the most difficult to me, but I'd still love to see tutorials on those as well to help improve my skills. I gave up on oils in my 20s in college cuz they're just WAY too messy & I hate the time-consuming clean-up. Thanks for all your videos :)

Hey thank you souch for considering my request. One experience I want to share. I used oil.panel for oil painting mostly outdoor for a whole year. I.loved working on the. Every mark looked lovely. But the point is when you cone to canvas its whole new chemistry. Like a new surface, where you need to work in layers and faT over lean. And painting might not turned around as ooth as on wood. So if you want to work a finished piece, must try working on canvas, know their chemistry, dry time and all. Canvas ate challenge a bit

Thank you so so much for listing out the pros and cons listed for each on the screen. I couldn't have the audio up with i watched your video, but being able to reach the pros and cons was very helpful. I think i'll be getting the canvas paper and then the boards. I"m currently learning acrylic painting. :) Thanks for this video.

I really love wood panels already mounted and canvas panels. One downside of panels is that many of them are not considered archival due to the cardboard backing. But i like the space saving feature. I still need to try mdf after quarantine.
I would really love to paint flowers, succulents, etc in oils. And i want to learn layering. Ill be using water mixable oils as i dont have a good ventilated space.

Dents can be removed by wetting the backside of the cavas then hitting it with a hair dryer set on medium until dry. This will shrink the canvas . Wet only the dent area.
