In today's video I am comparing two common painting surfaces for acrylic paint , canvas vs wood panel!! What are the pros and cons of both , and how do panels compare to canvas?

In my opinion I use panels for medium to small paintings and canvases for much larger paintings.
Its always a good thing to tone the white canvas with a color before you start your painting....I most always use a neutral light tan color, but it can be any light color you like ..... I thin it out a bit before I paint it on the white canvas....after it dries you are good to start your painting....and it you do get tiny spaces in your painting they will not glare out like they do when your canvas is snow white. Its a good tip.

This helped a lot because I bought a gesso panel block without noticing and I had no idea they even existed
I am glad that you found my video helpful! Wood isn't mentioned very much, even though there are many artists who use wood. I think Canvas is more widely known because it is a more affordable than wood so more people use it, especially for larger projects.
just sand the canvas till it's smooth, add more gesso, sand, more gesso, sand, more gesso. sand. mix gesso with gloss gel in 50/50. apply with spatula and smooth out.

Personally I love the fact that canvas has texture. I tend to work very dry with less gesso for the sake of getting that texture to show up more.
Also I prefer making my own panels by buying wood from hardware stores, saw it to size and then apply gesso.
I have a friend who loves the texture of canvas as well. For me I just prefer the paint texture over the canvas texture!

Thank you so much for this video, it helped a lot! Im just starting out and got myself some canvases, but i would really like to frame them in another gorgeous frame i got when theyre done. My canvases came with the wire and everything on the back to hang it up, but how do i go about putting the frame around it? Is it even possible?
I am glad that you found my video helpful! It is also possible to frame a canvas! You will need something called an off set clip to hold the canvas in the frame. You should be able to find them at most art and hardware stores.
I get my wood panels from Home Depot. They even cut to the size I need
I do have to gesso the crap out of it, but that’s part of the fun to me
I agree! I also do not like the texture of canvas. I've been using watercolor paper with my acrylic inks, but warping is such a pain, even after stretching. I use a TON of water with acrylic inks. Haven't tried panels yet. My question is, do they handel a lot of water and washes?
The Ampersand Gessobords are amazing with Acrylic washes and water. I have works done with nothing but acrylic washes on them. Ampersand also has a line called Aquabords that designed to be used with watercolors. I am not sure how well they would work with Acrylic inks but it could be something worth looking into!
This video is so helpful! Just a quick question, after you paint on the wood surface, is there any difference between painting on the wood and painting on the canvas? Like does the texture look different or anything else? Thank you!
The biggest difference is how each surface absorbs the paint. Canvas isn't as absorbent as wood, so it makes it harder to do things like acrylic washes with out a medium. In terns of texture you can find a quite a bit of variety with wood, from very textured to super smooth. With canvas you can find very smooth canvases, but it will still have slight cloth texture.

Saena, thanks for responding to my last comment. I just rewatched your video and then priced those Ampersan panels, ouch, they're expensive. Do you not recommend the canvas covered cardboard panels? Think I'm going to try gluing canvas over masonite. Great that you're responsive to your comments:)
You are very welcome! I try to answer comments as much as I can. Canvas panels are a great surface to use. I know many people who use them, I just don't use them :). And yeah Gessobords are pretty expensive, which is why I work in smaller sizes. But you can always buy unprimed Gessobords or raw birch panels and prep them yourself, that will save a bit of money.
Hi madam, Is it need to apply gesso in canvas panel?
Not typically. Most canvases come with gesso already applied. If they aren't gessoed they will typically say unprimed or raw canvas. However you can always add more gesso if you want a super smooth surface.
What painting surfaces have you tried?
I have used canvas, canvas paper (for studies), but I'm sticking with panels.The ones that I used are canvas boards. I like the combination of a canvas surface and the stiffness of the board. I paint usually on a 9x12 or 8x10 and panels are perfect for small paintings.

@@lucyb.5131 I usually make my own panels out of a hardwood panel (commonly known as masonite). You can try to sand the panels you already bought. This will make them smoother. Many artist use Ampersand panels.
How would hang round panel?
As long as the panel has a either a cradle or a solid wood back, you can add hanging hardware to it. Sometimes they come with keyholes in the back that allow for easy hanging. I know Trekell Art Supplies add keyholes to their round panels.

It depends on the quality and care for the canvas. As long as the canvas is well cared for, it will last a while. Even a cheaper canvas will a last at least 10 years with little damage if it is well maintained. Thank you for watching!
Is that painting of Kikyo from inuyasha?
It wasn't meant to be lol, she was just supposed a shrine maiden. But she does kinda of look like her. Inuyasha is one of my favorites animes, so Kikyo was probably one the first images I had in my head when I was planning that piece.
