So, I have a Brain Tumour

  • I have a sad health update - I have a brain tumour. Here's what it means for me as a pilot, whether I'll fly again, and what's going to happen next. Not the usual happy/silly video adventure that I usually like to post, but I wanted to be honest with you and share this change in my life. Thanks for all the support that everyone has shown to me so far.
If I can use this video to just encourage anyone else out there who may be experiencing headaches, or anything that they're not sure about with their health, to go and see a doctor as soon as you can to get it checked out. Most of the time it will be nothing, but in case it is something it's better to get it sorted out sooner.
Big love to you all as always,
    Stef

Hi Stef, having followed your highs in the sky for many years, be assured that I will be thinking positive thought whilst you go through this medical low. I am certain that you have flown on the same flights that my spouse and I have enjoyed. Perchance we might now meet in person as we look for a coffee to enjoy, in what I suspect shared neighbourhoods. Wishing you and family ( plus cat) strength and a rapid recovery. ❤

Stef...mate...I think I speak on behalf of the whole Aviation community when I say we are here for you. Not just because of your personal contributions to GA, but because like it or not you're a member of a community that rallies together and fights for one of its own. Your willingness to confront this head on and share with the community so openly will be a source of strength for many who are attempting to deal with their own issues; so thank you for that. Next time you're in the UK there's a seat in my aircraft, until you have your medical back you're always welcome.

Oh gosh! I'm so pleased that the neurosurgeons thinks it's most likely benign. My dad had a brain tumour, unfortunately it was already an aggressive grade 1V Glioblastoma when it was diagnosed, and as you probably know there's no cure for that and he sadly passed away only 4 months after diagnosis. It's so good to hear such a positive outcome with your tumour, and I hope you soon make a full recovery 😊

That is devastating news Stef. My heart goes out to you. Yours is seriously one THE best you tube flying websites out there, really nicely crafted (as a longterm ex BBC docs director I can't believe how you do it all yourself), with a natural ability to connect with audiences that just leaps off the screen, not to mention your passion and enthusiasm for our wonderful and beautiful hobby. I too have been off flying for several months now for medical reasons, after hundreds of fun hours over the years flying my C182 from my home base of Denham to places around Europe and even last year to North Africa, so your infectious spirit of adventure really chimes with me... And I know how bloody hard it is not to get into that left-hand seat!

Your video came up in my feed today. I can relate. I'm a private pilot in the US and I also had a brain tumor. Like yours, my doctors were also fairly sure that it was benign. And it turned out to be benign which is good. Mine was diagnosed when I was in college, before I started flight training. I had complications post-op so the FAA made me jump through a lot of hoops to get my medical. I hope you don't face any complications, but expect the authorities to request some more medical testing, or even a proficiency flight with one of their inspectors.
If you have questions about the brain tumor surgery, flying post-op or anything, and you'd like to talk, let me know how to contact you.

I’ve been watching you for many years but never commented. What a really humble video. Look at all the comments in just seven hours. It just shows how much you are loved.
My partner was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer about a month ago and I see so many similarities with how you are feeling as she did. We’ve cancelled our trip to Thailand and commenced chemo right away, so it was a lot to process.
Just know you aren’t alone in this, I’m sure you’re aware you have a very loving partner and daughter who will support you through this experience. And as you say, you’ll come out better and stronger at the other end, which you will.

Hey Stef. I’ve watched your channel for a few years now. I’ve always enjoyed your videos and your personality. In watching so many TH-camrs, I’ve come to see that most of you do this because you want to share your journey of flight with others. You seem to be someone who values sharing experiences, and someone who supports others along the way. To that end, I support you in your medical journey. I think you’ve framed this perfectly in how we all have challenges of varying degrees, and we all need someone to talk to. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with something that can be so scary, but I have no doubt that you will do all the right things you need to do to keep yourself safe and healthy. All the best to you! If you haven't already I would HIGHLY recommend getting a flight sim set up while you're grounded - I use a Quest 3 VR headset and it's surprisingly realistic, not that I would consider myself a pilot but I have done a little bit of GA. All the best with your treatment. Subscribed and looking forward to more vids with you as PIC in the future.

So sorry to hear this news. Sharing it on the internet I’m sure must not have been easy. I have been watching and enjoying your videos for a few years now, so felt compelled to write something as soon as I saw the title of this vid. Hoping everything goes well and your not grounded for too long. Wishing you a quick recovery. Thoughts to you and your family… from Spain 🇪🇸

Stefan I have viewed your videos every now and then. I think that I have not commented before but I have to say your attitude is admirable. Sometimes things just happen even if we don't want them to happen. Then we just have to face the challenges and move on as best we can. Planning for things your going to do after the surgery is a great way to keep you positive and motivated. You can be sure that I support you all the way. Prays and wishes from Finland. -Mikael
PS. Here's an uplifting song that just started to play in my head while I was writing this: "Smith & Thell - Goliath". It has helped me to get through many challenges.

Hi Stefan, I'm so sorry you're going through this right now. I love your mindset - everything about your tumour sounds very positive. I just wanted to give you a wee heads up to PLEASE do not let any hate comments get to you. I've also shared my brain tumour journey on here and have received sooo much support.. and a wee bit of hate. Please keep that positive mindset 😊 I will be saying a wee prayer for you and sending all the positive vibes your way. You're going to get through this before you know it 💪

Hello from Argentina Stefan. I'm sorry to hear about this problem, but at the same time I'm glad to know it's something easy to solve, excellent news. I watch your videos from time to time and I really enjoy them, your content is excellent and very well produced. I work in media, but I'm also a commercial pilot and a C172 owner, so I fully understand your concerns about getting back to the skies as a PIC. I'm sure that soon this story will be just another anecdote on your channel, we are with you Stefan and we hope you recover soon! Keep it up & hugs!.

Hi Stefan, been enjoying your videos for a few years. Your enthusiasm for flying played a part in my career change two years ago and I am now a commercial pilot.
Wishing you a speedy recovery as you work through this. Its good to see your positive attitude continues. 16 years ago I taught high school math with a lady that had a brain tumor removed many years prior to me knowing her. Had she not shared that with me I would have never known. She continued her career and worked all the way to retirement with no further issues. I'm confident that you will have the same experience.

Hi Stef... Walking home from a late movie, saw the "not clickbait" title and oh my gosh it's just shocking. Always enjoy your videos, but of this is the video that I will most remember. Of course you have support all over the world, including right here in New York City. Look forward to your safe and healthy return to the skies and many more stories and adventures to share. So gracious and supportive of you to give back to all of us, I hope that giving makes you stronger still.
Best wishes from our family..Rob A

Hey Stef, your careful and meticulous philosophy with your flying will be the solid foundation to dealing with this medical issue. Having been through a similar event not so long ago, I can only begin to empathise with your circumstances. It’s probably been said, stay positive, reach out for help when you need it and put up a big picture of EZY (with P2!) where ever you happen be recuperating… all the best for a speedy recovery 👍.

Hi Stefan - what tough news for you to receive and I’m sure it is a massive shock that you’re still processing. Thank you for sharing the news with us and I truly wish you all the best for the surgery and the recovery.
I experienced a similar situation about 20 years ago and I can certainly relate to your description of the shock, how you’re processing it, and the feeling of it all happening to someone else. What you’re feeling and dealing with is completely normal and is simply your brain trying to make sense of the new reality.
I have no doubt you are in the finest hands, the ability of surgeons and medical teams today is incredible and you will absolutely come out the other side of this healthy and happy.
Thinking positive thought for you and wish you the best of British luck.

Great attitude mate and good luck with getting the tumor removed. I am sure it will go smoothly and afterwards you can focus on recovery. If you are visiting Sydney - give me a shout. It will be a good time to practice approaches to all the airports you are going to visit on RTW in flight sim. Great way to prepare for the journey that awaits on the other side of the procedure.
