    Yess, finally a review of MAV-START famous CAF sleeping cars! I just love the interior design, and the modernized interior looks really fantastic. I'm glad you wrote they are comfortable - on the photos the beds look thin, and I was afraid it's as bad as PKP sleeping car. I plan to take the Metropol to Berlin next summer, hopefully they won't change the sleeping car type to a DWA one (ex-WSBA) which I already travelled on.
    And hopefully the shower service reinstates. I see MAV stepped up their game regarding breakfast - it's now of Nightjet quality. Pity that the other things aren't.
    Btw the first car after the locomotive in Budapest is a really special one - the unique PKP Newag 134Ac couchette car, which sadly didn't get to the serial production and remained as a prototype. Just a pity you didn't do a walkthrough of Warszaw portion too and showed us that car from inside.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also hoped before the trip that this CAF sleeping car would run on my train :-) The mattress was certainly softer than in the PKP sleeping cars. The breakfast was really well thought out. The other amenities, I think, were not provided due to the laziness of the car attendant, which became apparent only a moment after the passengers boarded the car.
      Btw. I usually only walk through the part of the train that is my portion.. I didn't go to check the PKP portion because I'm still planning a trip from Warsaw to Budapest by PKP sleeping car.. So I'll hope that this special type of couchette will go again..

    I am missing the openable windows in the sleeper cars, like in the old 1970's, 1980's WLAB cars. When you in a summer morning pull down the window to the half and enjoy the landscape with fresh air. Don't need a air conditioner with that closed windows, that makes it stifling in the interior.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I absolutely agree. I think that the air conditioning is not so necessary for sleeping cars that travel mostly at night. I also prefer to be able to open the window :-)

    Awesome video! Loved how I could hear the train and you allowed enough time read the subtitles. Also loved how you’ve showed everything. When I traveled to Munich by MAV Start, the compartment behind the mirror was full of goodies!!! Chocolate, orange juice, two diff kinds of water, there was soap, u name it! Was shocked that it was empty on your trip!

      @@simonpilk I also find it strange how someone writes a cool comment in response and YT doesn’t alert me 😂 anyway. I’m glad that a “stuffed mirror” is the norm, not this lack of service. I was also surprised how the sleeper carriage wasn’t closed off from other carriages and how there was no staff at the door. Had that all on my way to MUC. Strange.

    • @PeteBrandy

      Thank you :-) I was also surprised, because amenity kits and at least a bottle of water are provided in sleeping cars. I additionally asked the attendant if any amenity kit is provided and she said no. Overall, I felt that nothing was functional during my trip, including the service, when the car attendant was hidden in the service compartment almost the whole way.

    A very nice video! I've read somewhere that this is the only train in the world that crosses five countries on the way (there may be one small exception somewhere). I took the train in August. I was in a couchette car in a 6-bed compartment, which was much more cramped and the breakfast offer was much more modest, with just coffee (or another drink) and a cookie. There was very little space for baggage. It is a good idea to lock the door well during the trip. The train stops for a long time at two stations where it gets split in the middle of the night. Just before departure from Bohumin, a guy in a hoodie tried to enter our compartment, but he didn't manage to get inside (the lock looked much more flimsy than the one in your compartment, but it served its function). He managed to get inside another compartment, where apparently a passenger had left the compartment a moment earlier to go to the bathroom and left the door unlocked. I heard some shouting, so fortunately the passengers there were not asleep. I heard such stories about this train earlier. Of course, it is a good idea to always lock the door, but this train may be more prone to theft because of the very long stops late at night.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes, you need to lock yourself in well, something similar happened to me in a Polish sleeper car when we had a longer stop in Břeclav. But PKP sleeping cars even have 3 locks on the doors. In some companies, the attendant also locks the entire car. I still carry a strap with me, which I use to secure the door handle, for example, to the ladder :-D

    I'm always happy to see your videos made in Hungary, because I'm Hungarian. Máv and Utasellátó put a lot of emphasis on night trains, but I think there are very few of them and they are expensive. Although I can't see the price-value ratio, unfortunately I have not YET traveled on a similar train.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That makes me happy :-) Yes, it is now possible to meet MÁV sleeping cars on 3 all-season routes (to Munich, Zurich, Berlin) and in the summer to Split. Otherwise, they are on the middle range in terms of price (similar to PKP or ČD and cheaper than ÖBB Nightjet trains).

    • @gergelygyulalazar2293
      @gergelygyulalazar2293 ปีที่แล้ว

      PKP is cheaper than MÁV. I regularly take Budapest-Warsaw route (on a monthly basis) and I pay 50 EUR for one way including reservation in a sleeping car. MÁV gave the same route for 78 EUR without reservation.

    Hey man! Surprisingly here is another full "Yes" list, and the first loco-haul train service to mark all "Yes" 😄 That's truly a great trip but not cheap for me as it cost 140+ Euros, considering the exchange rate between MYR to EUR nowadays. 😖 By the way, that's a great review presented! Since borders are opening up gradually, considering to make rail trip reviews outside Europe? Keep up for more upcoming reviews as your reviews are my sleeping pills nowadays 😴😁

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you man! Yes, full "Yes" rate, but the evaluation of night trains is a little different from the classic ones, where I have different criteria. I think that the price is appropriate for a route over 1000 km long and also for the fact that I had the entire compartment for myself. I'd really like to look outside of Europe, maybe something will come out next year :-)

      €149 is rather a lot, OK, but not too much for a sleeper (an upgrade from a mere couchette) and solo occupancy on top of that. At the end of the day, the price is decent for what it offers.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but unfortunately ÖBB chose a cheaper route via Wroclaw for the Nightjet trains, so the through cars from Budapest now run connected with this train. But for me it was more interesting to travel via Wroclaw, because I travel the route Prague - Dresden - Berlin often.

      @@Librax0 .Hi. The sleeping car is a good choice. In the case of a sleeper car, the car number and berth are always written on the ticket. For sleeping cars, you can choose Triple (you share the cabin with up to 2 other passengers), Double (shared with another person) or Single (you have the entire cabin to yourself), I personally recommend Single cabin. As for safety, the cabins of MÁV carriages can only be locked from the inside, so if you go to the toilet, for example, it is better to take a small backpack with valuables and documents with you. I still carry a lockable cable with which I secure a locked suitcase, for example, to the ladder in the cabin.

    As I said in the comment to another video, on the line Budapest - Zürich they are using this and Görlitz-built sleeping-cars ex LG, ex Wagonservice, of a similar age (also modernized). Jinak se spalo celkem dobře, měl jsem z jedné strany služební oddíl a z druhé strany bylo volné kupé, takže byl i klid.

    Did you buy the ticket on the Mav Start mobile application? Because when i select Budapest - Berlin, it doesn't let me buy for any date.

      I bought a ticket through the MAV START website, the international connections didn't work for in the mobile application.. But the ticket was subsequently saved in the mobile application then

    Great video, I enjoyed it. Just arrived from Warsaw with CD into Prague. CD is far better than Austrian Rail or PKP. PKP crams 6 people in 1st class into one compartment. Don't like that. By the way do you know where I might be able to buy a CD rail souvenir? I have a friend that is also a train nut and I try and bring him something when I travel the rails.

      Thanks so much! ČD sleeping cars are great. If you want to buy a ČD rail souvenir, you can find some directly at their cash desks at major railway stations.

    11:36 what's in here? Attentand compartment? Why didn't you show that?

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, something like an attendant's compartment, but it's more like a kitchen, where the attendant has groceries, a coffee machine, etc. The attendant's compartment is opposite, next to the shower room.

    Ale už někdy jeď Slovakií a Zemplínou, a pokus se jet prvním nočníkem Praha-Zurich přes Oustí. Zkus taky normální trasu přes Budějice.

    Why are 2 coaches going to Brêclav? It is not even on my Oxford Atlas and Wikipedia says it has a population of 24,000.

      The reason is that Břeclav is an important railway junction of 4 lines in the direction of Prague, Bratislava / Budapest, Vienna, Poland. So Břeclav is also a transfer point between international trains going from/to different directions.

      ...and, complementing Pete, there are also cities as Vác, Szob, Štúrovo, Nové Zámky, Bratislava and Kúty (this stretch is covering the area of 1 mio. inhabitants...) their citizens travelling from/to 10pm 8h nightshifts, this is the last fast connection and there are hubs as Nové Zámky and Bratislava as well.
      I frequently used to travel this train in the morning from Bratislava to Nové Zámky for physician/doctor appointments leaving my 12h nightshift an hour earlier...

      Díky! To nevadí, protože v tomto směru z Budapešti už jsem jel.. a ty nerekonstruované už jsou jen poslední dva, takže si to reko WLABmee můžu dát někdy v zimě, to by mohly jezdit i na Košice nebo Varšavu, protože budou asi potřebovat více WLABmz na trasu do Curychu přes Leipzig

    150 euros is expensive for night train. I know it's a long distance, but still.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this price was OK for a long distance (in compare with Nightjet).
