Fun fact that you did not mention, but between Feldkirch and Buchs you also travel through the tiny state of Liechtenstein. The train has no stops there but you were in 3 countries during this voyage 🙂.
I know about it, but I forgot to mention it. Thanks for the reminder. I think this train usually go through even 4 countries, because part of the line still run through Germany, but we took a diversion route through Zell am See.

In the 60is and 70is a lot of folk took overnight trains , and used sleepers and couchettes. For a single traveller {who did not drive} it was a very practical and comfortable way of travelling. Very interesting report. Keep it up !!
@@PeteBrandy I don t really think that the night trains are coming back to be popular at all. This is just a general marketing over the EU trying to move people from their cars to trains. I've been on the night train from Budapest to Zürich in May. We had a mishap in the Alps (Muhrenabgang near Ötztal) and had to switch to busses between two stations early in the morning but it was handled very professionally, and since the weather was nice and I had no connection to make, I enjoyed the enhanced immersion into the scenic Vorarlberg landscape.
Dear Pete, what a great trip and what a great video. Thank you very much for that. The moment you opened the rollos and saw the snow and mountains is so beautiful. Also this video is really an inspiration for us. The ÖBB Nightjet really makes a very good impression and my wife and I will definitely do this tour as well. Thanks again!
Thanks so much! It was the same surprise for me when I woke up. It was the first time I saw the Alps this close, before it was always only from an airplane.

Great report, mate! It stood out how silent and smooth your car was running. Also loved the morning footages in the Alps. :D
In deluxe these cars are wonderful. Economy compartments are only half the size though (ok for a single traveller but very restricted for two), and unlike the WLABmz Comfortline there's no public shower. By the way if you travel in the Hungarian sleeping-car from Budapest the ride is shorter, you don't have such a long stopover in Salzburg. The train departs later from Vienna or arrives earlier in the morning in the other direction. But the MÁV sleeping-cars have no deluxe compartments and, according to my sister, are a bit noisy/squeaky at night.
Thanks for watching! Yes, standard (economy) compartments are a bit tiny, but also good when you travel alone. Yes, Hungarian "EN Kalmán Imre" portion has shorter ride time. I tried these Hungarian sleeping cars on the EN Metropol from Budapest to Berlin in 2022 and as you told, they are a bit noisy (I also have a video here).
Nice report! Travelled in the exact same coach and cabin (307, cabin 111) a couple of weeks ago! It was mostly a smooth and enjoyable journey, except for a small section near the Arlberg pass where our cabin had a leak when it was raining outside. Wonder if that's why they took one of the double decker sleeper coaches out of service haha
Thanks so much! I think cabin 111 is the best cabin in case of position in the carriage. Btw. I had the same problem with water dripping from the panoramic window when was raining :-D I would also be interested in why the second of the double-decker cars missed, but I was returning with the same set in the evening (but on a direct ČD car to Prague) and there were already two double-decker cars in this set.
I see you did this trip in the coldest months as it give you the opportunity to get your information on this type of train journey being the off season, but still enjoyable. Or though I like to travel during the day because I like to see the scenery.
Traveling during off season has its advantages, the trains tend to be less crowded and, moreover, it's not so difficult to book a deluxe cabin on this train. In 2022 I tried to book this compartment but it was still sold out. Yes, the day trains are good for the window views, but there is not so much quiet :-)
The car looks like it's probably spent most of its life in storage and is in need of an overhaul or complete rebuild. On the other hand the price was excellent and there is some very nice scenery,Is there anything more comfortable on a cold rainy day than a nice warm sleeping car?
Yes, these cars correspond to the time of their production and they already need a modernisation. But in my opinion, they are still one of the most comfortable sleeping cars (as for the deluxe cabins on the upper deck).
Pete you were so lucky, that you tried NightJet sleeper in 2023. I checked prices today and in new schedule prices jump so high, they are more than doubled... Single is around 400 euro, but Single deluxe more than 500 euros. Even cheapest triple is more than 100 euros. Too expensive for Central Europeans budgets :/
I also checked the prices for bed supplements and these really have gone up, I hope this is just a bug in the reservation system, because otherwise this price is quite uncompetitive.
Thanks so much! Yes, it is very interesting that there are no double-decker trains in the UK, they are very common in continental Europe. Btw. these double-decker sleeping cars are very rare, only 10 of these cars are in service (Zurich - Vienna and Zurich Hamburg). But in Finland, for example, there are mostly double-decker sleeping cars.
That is a sensational price for the Deluxue Sleeper! In 1998 I paid £199 one way from London to Edinburgh. I just remember the coffee in the morning was served in a pot and it was HOT!! It's strange about the wi-fi and lack of power outlets.
Yes, the price was great, I had a luck to still catch the promo fare (Sparschiene), otherwise the tickets are more expensive on this route.. The missing Wi-Fi and lack of power outlets corresponds to the year of production of these cars, I hope that after the new Nightjet units will be delivered (the Railjet based ones), so they will have time to upgrade these cars :-)

Here it depends whether you have an upper deck cabin or a lower deck cabin, the lower deck cabins are not very comfortable, but the deluxe cabins on the upper deck are great. Overall, this was my best night train journey so far :-)
I think that your trains need more comfort and also the snacks are so poor, I can imagine myself traveling under these circumstances, but anyway this is Europe. Good lock and enjoy, regards guys.
You said that the snack were poor ,I assume not a lot of choices? But why would you be snacking in a middle of the night...It is a Nightjet,in any case, you can always bring your own snacks!
👏 interesting journey coverage ! Didn't you notice this weird fact: on the train formation display in Vienna (min3:31) just the first class coach is announced to reach Zurich ))
good quality material. can you make a video with the best train operators in your opinion, considering like the comfort of travel, food served, time travel, route itself etc. Since you travelled almost all of them here in Europe🙂 I think it'd be interesting to watch. cheers
Thanks so much! Is sounds as a good idea :-) I still have to try a few trains that I have planned, so maybe I could make a special video at the end of the year :-)
I've replayed the scene of the train backing into Vienna station several times but I don't see the double decker. Are the upper windows on the other side of the platform?
It is the second car from the back (in Vienna), this double decker car has 2 rows of windows above each other on the side where the cabins are, but on the side where is the aisle there is only one row of windows, from the other side this car can be seen after arriving in Zurich
Yeah the single occupancy compartments are ok-ish on these double deckers but I don’t wish anybody travel in 2- or even 3-berth ones. I was forced to travel in a double once and being 1.9 m tall + a regular suitcase was a total nightmare, not a nightjet. I seriously can’t imagine how ppl can travel in the 3-berth tuna cans. The regular single-decker compartments are way more spacious.
Hi. Yes, you can book a whole compartment for yourself. There are 3 choices when you book your journey in sleeping car: Single (a whole compartment for you), Double (one bed in shared 2-bed compartment) or Triple (one bed in shared 3-bed compartment).
These cars correspond to the time of their production, including facilities (power sockets, Wi-Fi). I hope they will be modernised sometime.. But I think they are still one of the best products on the market.
Excellent video as always. The room looks fantastic but I wouldn't expect anything less from OEBB. Not sure my wallet could afford even a day in Zuerich though! :D
Thanks so much! I think I'm in a similar situation, I just walked around the center of Zurich and then in the evening I left by another train abroad :-D
Another good report Pete, seems like a good deal when you factor in the price of a hotel and the cost of the journey, have you any idea how good the sound proofing is in the cabins I’m working hard on my wife to take the nightjet hopefully the one to Hamburg from Vienna or vice versa but she’s worried about noisy neighbours, really enjoy your reports you’re inspiring me to start my travels again
Thanks so much! I calculate it the same way, the hotel + the flight ticket would be more expensive :-) As for the sound proofing, it depends a lot on the type of sleeping car, the worst are the cars that have interconnecting doors between compartments, through which you can hear every word... which are, for example, WLABmz comfortline cars.. here it is good to take a Deluxe cabin because there is also a bathroom between the compartments. But a lot also depends on the composition of the passengers. However, I always use earplugs when traveling on night trains :-)
I don’t know how, but I have old CityCightLine “Hotelzug” leaflet from the 1990s and there is an info about entry to service in May 1995 and also there are named SGP Verkehrstechnik, Waggonfabrik Talbot and Schindler Waggon AG
@@denismitvan2080 Some production was subsequently taken over by Siemens, but for example first series of ÖBB Dosto carriages were also produced in SGP, according to information from my friends from nearby, SGPs were still operated till 2000
Yes, these carriages are still in a condition corresponding to the time of their production. New sleeping cars tend to have better equipment. Unfortunately, only few night trains now have a restaurant or bistro car.
I think the main reason is the small capacity of night trains, they are often sold out a months in advance. I hope the situation will improve after the new Nightjet units will bedelivered.

outside of the compartments? if so, no, they remain bright
Hi Peter do you have to book both beds as a solo traveller or do you automatically get the compartment to yourself
Hi. Yes, you can book a whole compartment for yourself. There are 3 choices when you book your journey in sleeping car: Single (a whole compartment for you), Double (one bed in shared 2-bed compartment) or Triple (one bed in shared 3-bed compartment).
Some fantastic scenery however my perception was the cabin looked grubby. Is that unfair? And no Internet?
These cars correspond to the time of their production, including facilities (power sockets, Wi-Fi). I hope they will be modernised sometime.. But I think they are still one of the best products on the market.
skvele videjko
Díky moc! :-)
@@PeteBrandy I've heard horror stories of a pizza costing 50 CHF and that was 10 years ago so I can only imagine what it's like now! O_O
Palec na horu👍✌️♥️
Díky moc :-)
Where do you store your luggage? :)
keren bang
Which would be the cheapest night sleeper in Europe?
SGP Graz went out of business in 1989 and how did the coach came out on 1995?
I don’t know how, but I have old CityCightLine “Hotelzug” leaflet from the 1990s and there is an info about entry to service in May 1995 and also there are named SGP Verkehrstechnik, Waggonfabrik Talbot and Schindler Waggon AG
@@PeteBrandy does this mean SGP is in business again?
@@denismitvan2080 Some production was subsequently taken over by Siemens, but for example first series of ÖBB Dosto carriages were also produced in SGP, according to information from my friends from nearby, SGPs were still operated till 2000
@@PeteBrandy i wish SGP came back, I like their trains
How do you know if you're seat is a deluxe cabin? It's not indicated in the ticket.
If you have ÖBB ticket, there is written: “… mit Dusche & WC”
Was their a dining car ,or any capacity to get an evening meal?
There is no dining car on this train, but you can purchase some refreshments from the sleeping car attendant.
It's there really only one power point, a shaver socket in the WC? That's not good ...
I love Vienna last year ago I’m living in Vienna tower stay at 2010 Vienna well maybe I go too more again
Super report :) tyhle vozy, tehdy ještě v nátěru CNL a pak DB, mě už od dětství hrozně fascinovaly asi tou mohutností a netypickým uspořádáním :)
Why don’t you fix the wind noise?
Why do they have tap water if its not potable
I go too a zoo in Vienna garden of zoo world well well
this looked like a comfortable and scenic journey but lacking in amenities like WIFI and a snack bar where you could meet other travellers
Yes, these carriages are still in a condition corresponding to the time of their production. New sleeping cars tend to have better equipment. Unfortunately, only few night trains now have a restaurant or bistro car.
Luxury problem! Just take the regular sleeper cabin like normal folk and you'll meet a random assortment of other travellers
why would anyone put themselves through the nonsense of flying these days when this option is available
I think the main reason is the small capacity of night trains, they are often sold out a months in advance. I hope the situation will improve after the new Nightjet units will bedelivered.
Did Travel on one of these cars I was on the last cabin
Nice :-)
