The scene around the dinning table in 90 and the scene when Milky and Woody fight are some of the best performances in a TV show ive ever witnessed. So fucking good

That's what I love about English television (for the most part), they don't drain their fucking shows to the last bits. They do three or four seasons and end it. In american we milk it until it turns to complete shit. It sucks.

There was a huge amount of sub culture around in early 2000s with skater kids, pop punk, new wave metal heads, townies, new wave goths, stoners, drum n bass and raver kids, grime etc. It was a great time. It all started dying around 2006 with the rise of social media. Kids know that what they do now will be remembered forever. Very sad.
Oh yeah, I finished school in 2001 and started college. I was very much part of the skater kid/pop punk scene but was the townie kid in that scene if you know what I mean? Basically the townie/chavy kid from the city who went to college in the suburbs and listened to both Taking Back Sunday and Oasis. My saturdays were going to the footy in the afternoon and then off to see my mates playing in pop punk/emo bands that evening so really straddled 2 scenes in a way. Miss those days as those few years seemed like the last few years of kids being part of a scene.

emos will always be forgotten about which is why they become emos to begin with. Scene is a word emos use to judge emos that are more emo than themselves.
+George Banks Emo and scene are two REALLY different things. Emo was just ended up being a blanket term for anyone who looked slightly alternative after 'mosher' stopped being used. Goth was also a blanket term for anyone alternative for a while too.

This is England 96? Spice Girls and the return of Pete Waterman. We follow the story of S Club Juniors as they save British music and culture... until Pop Idol is finally created and Britain leads the world again with legends like Michelle McManus & Gareth Gates.
Britpop was a music thing, not a subculture. My mad fat diary already tried to do something with the mid 90's and it was god awful. 90 is the perfect time to call it a day, there were still subcultures after that point but not to the same effect as 1950's -1980's.

5:40 I think Shane is totally right about this. I don’t listen to popular music and I haven’t for a long time, but l’ve noticed something. If I hear a song I’ve never heard from the 60s, I can tell it’s from the 60s. Same with 70, 80s and 90s. But if I hear a song from this century that I haven’t heard, I couldn’t tell you if it was from the 00s, 10s or 20s.
+Ireland1984 It didnt really break anything. It was part of the last big explosion of culture. But it included UK new school breaks, Indie rock from bands like the Libertines and the Arctic Monkeys, and Shane Meadows. It is funny that if Shane went far enough into the future he would be the culture.
+rorz999 Yeah, was an offshoot of garage and jungle which sort of became dubstep, wasn't really anything new just people getting peeved with where drum and bass and uk garage had gone.
Do like Shane Meadows work- be interested to see his next film/TV projects, loving This is England '90 at the moment, reminds me of growing up through all the changing subcultures of the time and seeing the transition of them, from Skinhead/revival Mod to goth/new romantic to indie/acid house
those days aren't over, there's a mix of different subcultures all over England, theres hip-hop/rap, metal, punk, emo, all kinds of subcultures all over the place but the lines have started blurring which is interesting
Kids today arent as loyal to one genre of music nor does music play as much of a role in their lives. From the 50s through the 90s music and the genre of music you followed played a role in how you identified yourself, or at least that's the way it was in the United States. In the 1990s in Chicago you had coffee shops for Goths, Ravers, Hippies, Hip Hop and for Punks. The Punk and Skin coffee shop on the Southside was Huck Finn's. The suburbs had Dennys but each Dennys belonged to a different crowd. My interest in Punk is what led to interaction with Skins which led to me falling in love with England, Football and English fashion. Even though I dont have a drop of English blood running through my veins and I never was a Skinhead, I couldn't get enough of England and everything English just seemed so much cooler to me.
People always be leavin' the 2000s out of the equation, the decade with countless iconic genres and cultures, kids here in Australian urban communities were diverse, white kids wore bangs, bobcuts, sports t-shirts, into Rap-Rock, the Pacific Islanders/wogs had curls, coloured hair streaks, rats tails, baggy jeans, track pants, Air Force Ones, B-caps and was into American Gangsta Rap, school uniforms and attitudes were akin to shows like Summer Heights High/Jonah From Tonga which are wholly accurate of our culture and time.

But if I hear a song from this century that I haven’t heard, I couldn’t tell you if it was from the 00s, 10s or 20s.
Holy shit it's actually happening!
I'd say Grime is the last thing to break the mould in England.
+rorz999
Yeah, was an offshoot of garage and jungle which sort of became dubstep, wasn't really anything new just people getting peeved with where drum and bass and uk garage had gone.
+rorz999 uhh wouldn't say the guys making grime music were at warehouses sweating out ecstasy couple of years before....
+BelizeHunni yeah they was never heard of jungle?
Shaun Maguire honey that isn't gime.
Such a humble man. Huge inspiration.
I'm in love of those characters. It's something irresistible.
Do like Shane Meadows work- be interested to see his next film/TV projects, loving This is England '90 at the moment, reminds me of growing up through all the changing subcultures of the time and seeing the transition of them, from Skinhead/revival Mod to goth/new romantic to indie/acid house
Shane Meadows is so under-rated
if they make another one i will definitely be tuned in

Great video thanks guys
I love his Herbie story, can't believe Meadows may indirectly be responsible for the existence of the Lindsay Lohan version. Hahaha classic.

I can't wait! Amazing movie and amazing show.
Great interview.
Immense talent and what a sound bloke.
The interviewer looks 15 to me, old am I but not yet dead, still a young man in my head.
Your not old mate, just not young anymore!
