I'd strongly recommend putting a fixed-value resistor ~3X the value of whatever pot you use between ground and the pot to limit the max overvolt to something probably survivable like 30%. Without that resistor to limit the adjust range (ex.: 27-33k for a 10k pot), you can accidentally end up sending 12V to core/hbm/whatever by turning the pot the wrong way. That also has the benefit of making more of the pot's adjust range usable.
An even better option would be to use a pair of fixed value resistors to provide the maximum overvolt feedback signal and then use the pot to trim the Vout-FB resistor to reduce the overvolt. This way, you don't have to worry about the pot's wiper contact noise messing up the feedback signal as much. With only the pot in the circuit, bad wiper contact could send massive voltage spikes out of the VRM.

did I not mention that you should put a resistor on the GND side of the pot to limit the max overvolt? As for the wiper contact issue a resistor to GND actually wouldn't do anything. The moment that the VS+ pin isn't connected to Vcore you're gonna get a burst of 2.4V before the VRM shuts down(no voltage controller used on GPUs will let you go much past 20% duty cycle so 12V is not gonna happen bu 2V+ is still really bad). So for the wiper contact issue you would want a resistor going from Vcore to VS+ to make sure that VS+ is never disconnected from Vcore.
I wonder if I need to release a revised version of the video now.....

If you mentioned the resistor to GND, I missed it. As for the resistor from VSS to sense, you can use the pot itself for that: connect one end of the pot to Vss and tie sense to wiper+other end of the pot, this way you never have more than the pot's maximum value unless the carbon track fails. (Although using a parallel resistor, preferably as an SMD divider on the board, would have the benefit of lowering noise on the sense line.)

Despite having a Vega 64 myself, I'm not too intereseted int how to voltmod it. I'm just to casual for that. But the second part explaining the conpect itself was pretty interesting. It helps knowing what buildzoid does / talks about in his own modding projects and oc livestreams.
While realizing 10 minutes is the 'best' length on youtube, I'm kinda sad it wasn't 30 minutes. Longer.

      Edit: Now it works

I won't do this mod because before my card thermal throttles (which should be fixed once I slap a waterblock onto it) it reaches 1742MHz but still nice to see more of this. Keep it up!

Hey, Buildzoid, I was a bit sad you didn't have any TR4 videos. I was also sad I couldn't find any pictures of an ASUS Zenith without the VRM heatsinks.
Well, a few weeks go by and I have a Zenith sitting in its box while I wait for other parts and I'm 100% going to take that heatsink out because one of those parts is a monoblock.
If you have any interest, I can take a few pictures of its naked shame for you to potentially make some content in the future

When you're explaining the HBM mod are you sure the two resistors you noted that needed removal are the correct ones? It looks like It should be the two leftmost resistors out of that set of four, not the center two. It looks like there's a differential pair of traces coming from the left two resistors which would make more sense to me. IIRC you've said before that there's probably no reason to do that mod anyway so not a big deal.
Anyway thanks for the cool videos on GPU PCBs! I'm really enjoying them.

If you try to reduce the rumble in this video, you definitely accomplish it. It`s way more understandable than most of your other videos, with all the info that is needed. If this is what you do with a script, please keep doing it.

What is the purpose of those 2 resistors? 0 ohm resistors to couple to Vout to the sense pin? why 2? A schematic/drawing and some in depth explanation would have been nice. there are no resistors in the design example for the (a.f.a.i.k) comparable IR35201.

What is the capacitance of the mlcc on the feedback pins ? I'd like to know since the potentiometer 's resistance combined with the capacitance would create a low pass filter, which if not calculated correctly, could introduce a significant delay in the feedback voltage.

    • @Mordaur
      @Mordaur 2 ปีที่แล้ว

you're talking about a RC Integrator Circuit right?
Once the voltage is stable, this shouldn't matter right? so this would be a problem at initial startup voltage regulation or large transients, right? Overshooting due to delay (capacitor charge), and the VRM controller trying to level out its output. Or am I misunderstanding this? I'm trying to understand what you are stating here.

Almost 2 month ago i posted on your blog to check the Vega SoC clocks to leverage if any possible improvement.
Would have brought some good content.
I noticed just now users get interested to it on OCN, maybe you will read this one this time and give it a peek.
Could bring some interesting for oc and performances for bench.
    Have fun dude! 0/

i got a vega 56 and i donno if the results are a lie or not.
it says its getting 1719mhz peak core with 950mhz ram. stock bios 50mv undervolt stage 6 and 7. hbm is 50mv overvolt. max fan setting is 3400rpm and it doesnt get hotter than 62C. im gonna flash the bios when the warranty is gone. though i donno if its worth it.

So theoretically, what does this mean for a high end overclock on an RX Vega 64? Does it catch up any more than the current overclocks on a 1080? Does it get any closer than the 1080 TI?

From my testing even 1.42V on the HBM doesn't help for going past 1100MHz on ambient cooling.
