Miles I listened this morning on Spotify and simply had to come over to leave a comment about flushing. Not flushing is good for the environment but not in the way you might expect. You're right that water flows through the water cycle so it's not like we're depleting it necessarily, but you're also right we can only consume fresh treated water. That water treatment process (yes at sewage treatment centers!) is extremely energy intensive. So the positive environmental impact is actually about saving energy, not water!!
I am so glad that I’m not the only person who was listening on a podcast app and then had to come over to TH-cam just to write a comment about how wrong Miles was regarding water use lmao
Another important part of water use, though it mostly pertains to agriculture. A large portion of the water used in California comes from the Colorado river, which actually no longer reaches the ocean in Mexico because the western United States diverts so much of it. There's some really interesting stories and politics surrounding the Colorado river compact, which definitely impacts the environment where the river does and does not run. LA also has some of its own really interesting history with water policy & environmental impact

OH. MY. GOD!!! My husband and I have a Busine story!!!! When we first moved in together, finances were a touchy subject. He was constantly concerned we were spending too much money, we weren't. One day he was looking at recent transactions and he ran to me FUMING about a $203.67 charge for something he said was called "Pa-gahn-yay". He asked what it was and why I spent so much without him knowing. He showed me the transaction and it was written out as Pgne. I looked at him and just started cracking up! He was getting more upset, so I quickly gathered myself and told him "That is the short hand that the electric company uses, it's meant to stand for PG&E. Honestly Miles, I am in love with your wife 😂 She's truly a treasure and I relate so hard to the Busine story that I think I owe my husband an apology 😂😂😂
I’m doing a watershed internship rn and have been trying to understand this stuff so here’s my explanation: You’re both right in a way. When flushed, water goes to a treatment facility to remove things that could be harmful then it’s put back into your waterways, which are often where your toilet and tap water are sourced. So the water does get cycled like Miles said, but to Sarah’s point, it takes energy to clean the poopoo peepee water so we can use it again. So we should be reasonably conservative with it
I work in sustainable building services (can't believe I finally have an expertise here 😂) and this is a great summary. When we monitor water usage as a sustainable measure it's the power intensive of running the water to a system and draining the wastage, treating that water, and running it back into the system. Generally a domestic house uses 200 litres a day

Sarah is right about the toilet flushing! Some toilets even have "half flushes" for water conservation. Basically, all the water in your plumbing is purified, treated, potable water, even in your toilet, so it actually IS wasteful and therefore bad for the environment to flush that water down the toilet, just like when you leave the sink running wbile you brush your teeth.

It is bad for the environment to waste water because: 1. It takes energy to make water potable, which usually involves fossil fuels or renewable energy capturing using finite lifetime methods (solar arrays and windmills have limited life, so even if we can switch to these methods, we still are motivated to minimize energy usage) 2. Water reclamation-taking sewage and getting water back out-is never perfect and also takes energy 3. Our modern water systems often take water from source 1 and return it to source 2. If these are within the same region/water basin and the water cycle is going well, it wouldn’t matter. However, I know you’re in LA. We often take water from very, very tapped rivers, and return it to the ocean. It doesn’t directly, immediately replenish the lakes/rivers that we drew from, leading to droughts in those areas and poor ecosystem health. Water desalination by any method besides the water cycle is insanely inefficient and we as human societies don’t have it down, so putting water into the ocean is essentially bidding it adieu for a while. Great news: if you really don’t want pee hanging around, save water from warming up the shower, bath water from your toddler, or save rainwater etc, and pour it down the toilet! that will flush it! You can also change your flush volume on your toilet but adjusting the bobber and/or adding a brick/jug. You shouldn’t waste water, but, you should feel comfortable in your home and there’s ways to split the difference!!
I'm so glad you guys covered the dental topic. It can be so embarrassing for people but taking about it and relating can feel so validating. Funny side note my dentist made a joke while working on my teeth and I gurgled when I laughed 😂

I’ve been in 2 similar situations to the crush on a friend one. One of my best friends told me that they had a crush on me and I turned them down but we are still best friends and now roommates, that was 4 years ago. Another one of my best friend’s and I had crushes on each other(not knowing it was reciprocated) and neither of us wanted to say anything because we didn’t want to ruin the friendship we had. I finally took a risk and told them just to get it off my chest and they said they felt the same and we were very scared because we cared about each others friendship. But we took the risk and now we’ve been together 3 years and are talking about getting married at some point.
Flushing requires different energies of all sorts: -The kinetic energy of the water slamming up against the pipes causing wear and tear -The *insert drastically snowballing energies*
Apart from energy waste, wasting water is also bad for nature because loads of creatures live in fresh water... the more water you take out of nature for human use, the fewer water stays in the environment. At the same time, droughts get worse and worse with climate change, so the froggos etc. don't have enough wetlands to live in (amphibian biologist here 😅). The water coming back out of the treatment plant goes straight down the (usually canalised) river into the sea, not back into wetlands.
Thank you! This conversation is painful. If you are using water, it had to come from somewhere. It is highly unlikely it is going back there. A lot of communities don't even let people recycle rain water, which is crazy to me. I don't know if I would say flushing the toilet is necessarily wasting water in the sense that it was used for no reason. Watering a lawn when you live in a desert would be more of a waste, probably. We likely do not need to use as much water as we do when we flush, however. If you can wait to flush, you should. Gallons and gallons of water are used every time we flush. Unfortunately, our house is a rental, and the toilet clogs easily. Otherwise, I would let it mellow more often.

You guys are really making feel better about my dental routines, I also went through some appointments last year to get caught up from bad habits. Now I'm on Adderall and it's so much easier to stay on it lol
When Sarah said “you took a class on poop?” I LOST IT 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love Sarah
I NEED a Shorts clip of Miles imitating Sarah when she's sick 🤣🤣🤣
Flushing requires different energies of all sorts:
-The kinetic energy of the water slamming up against the pipes causing wear and tear
-The *insert drastically snowballing energies*
