It behooves first party publishers to provide top quality productions that make their consoles worth buying. Nintendo and Sony have both produced amazing games to sell us on the PS4 and Switch.
Microsoft, however, is different. Microsoft has decided to act no better than a grasping third party "AAA" publisher. Even worse, it set the tone of a generation and contributed - perhaps more than any other company - to the nasty normalization of excessive monetization.
It's Microsoft's fault that videogames are bad.

I was so furious when Microsoft started doing this with Microsoft Office. Instead of having a complete suite of programs included when I bought a new computer, I suddenly had a yearly subscription that I had to keep paying for, or else lose access to Word and Excel. For personal use I was able to transition to freeware like OpenOffice. But - surprise, surprise! - those files aren't compatible with Microsoft's. Meaning if it's anything important, I have to either shell out for the Microsoft version at home or sneak in some unauthorized time at the desk job I'm lucky enough to have.
This change went over so well in the business world and made them so much goddamn money that they decided to replicate it in the game world. It's absolute bullshit that lowers the usefulness of the product while making it cost a lot more.

Today, in the upcoming CoD:MW game, you have to level up to unlock the guns, than level the guns so you can unlock the gun customization etc. And the weird part is, if everything is unlocked and you can customize your loadout however you want, people complains because "there is no progression".

@Jack _ The RAM issues came later, as Valve added more actual functionality to TF2, the game required more RAM than the 360 could have handled without substantial optimization. But this was much later, Valve had been saying they'd bring class updates to the XBox for a while, but ultimately canceled.
A big reason for that was that the community for TF2 on XBox was dwindling more and more by that point, and Steam was starting to take off. TF2 was also an older game, and didn't require as high end a computer to run than it did at launch. But Microsoft's policy of charging developers for updates was a thing too, and that couldn't have helped.
If I recall, they allowed a few small updates for free, after that they charged the developer. To "Ensure quality was maintained." I'm guessing that the size of a proposed console update to TF2 was considered too expensive to be worth it to Valve.

The Jimquisition is a really interesting stylistic beast. In many ways it’s still got the DNA of the ‘rant’ style reviews of the early 2010s (albeit better written). As the show’s gone on it has embraced a series of running goofs and an overall linguistic flourish that’s given it its character. However this episode has definitely shown more of a video essay leaning, in terms of its structure being deliberately delineated, a focus on contextualising the issue. But tonally it’s still very much the Jimquisition.
I wonder if the Jimquisition as it goes on will be closer in tone to a more standard video essay? I don’t think so, but it’s interesting to see the evolution of the show.

Dedicated servers bundled with most MP games,
      modding support in massive/popular games,
high fidelity graphics that ran with no latency,
Full featured products with "expansion packs" that could easily be 20-30% of the original game in content for a reasonable price,
no distracting "social features" that defeat the point of a gaming for many people (escapism).
There's more things but you get the idea.
I've watched the hobby I loved slowly be eroded away by pure greed.
Growing up we imagined games would be so amazing in the future, with all the power PCs will have!
Massive scope, amazing AI, simulations and dynamic gameplay.
Instead we get minimum viable product AAA games and small budget indie.
Because AAA buys out all the good mid-tier developers all we have left are massive budget homogenisations and small budget indie.
No creative mid-tiers trying new things and working on something their are passionate about.
Indie games are great, but the can only do so much with the resources they have.
Games use to really push the envelope of what hardware could do, now they just get bogged down in superfluous post-processing and unoptimised implementations.

The moment Microsoft lowered the toll booth arm on peer-to-peer connections and raised that paywall to separate customers that pay a monthly ransom for literally nothing from those that didn't, the industry was started down the road to perdition.
Games as a Services, Micro-Transactions, Always-Online Single-Player Games, Season Passes & Incomplete Games gutted and sold back piecemeal to customers, and mobile phone business models infused into $60+ USD titles, can all be tied back to that moment in gaming history.
Now, games are highly disposable, mostly homogenous and creatively stagnant, and consoles have become rental terminals that will eventually refuse to grant customers access to the games they paid a $60+ rental fee for.
This is why I prefer retro games on emulators and pre-Xbox Live! games on older consoles. I'm done paying increasingly escalating costs to play the same handful of games I've been playing for the last 20+ years with new coats paint.

Players were stopped from playing the games they bought for 60 fucking dollars by requiring an internet connection to check for authentic ownership. This is coupled with the fact that you can't share physical copies of games if you already registered it into your console. At the time, this was the most egregious thing Microsoft could do. It seems they've out-assholed themselves and continued to find new ways to fuck over their consumers by spearheading the microtransaction movement. This has been the worse generation for Xbox every and it's only getting worse from now because of the greedy nature of Microsoft.
I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft will turn full Adobe and stop support for Microsoft Office and requiring a subscription to Office 365 in order to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc just like how there hasn't been a new Photoshop CC since 2015. the difference between TF2 and what`s happening today is that everything in the crates of TF2 were (and maybe still are today... haven't played in like 3 years) ONLY cosmetic.
And today you'll notice most gamers don't care about cosmetic microtransactions .... they do complain however about using microtransaction to level up faster and thus get better guns or abilities or wtv than others playing the same game; or about simply getting better items directly by paying.

Ubisoft are very bizzare in one regard, I find.
Their mature series (Assassins creed, far cry, watch dogs) seem to get more praise the closer to the mediocre/bad border they are. Odyssey and Origins are watered down excuses of games yet recieved immense praise. Seriously the more generic, mind numbing, sloppy, reptitive, melodramatic and pedestrian their games are, the more people seem to love it, it's only when they release something completely broken they seem to care about quality.
It's just so bizzare to me how the ubisoft formula (Reptitive gameplay loop, flat characters, terrible stories, easy button mashing gameplay) has attracted such a mass following of the common denominators of the gaming world.
But I absolutely spite ubisoft except for AC Rogue, so take that with a grain of salt, I suppose.

Like I don’t think it’s good for most gamers for platform holders buying out publishers of multi platform franchises

Because they've shown they'll do it for that, you think they won't do it for more noticeably awful stuff too?
