You are indeed correct. They wanted to make a PC in a box, almost as a console alternative to using PC. So in a way the play anywhere was more of a return to it's routes really. I mean it's an "X Box" because Direct X. Now they have Direct X, X Box and Windows X (OK it's 10 but still). They really like base 10.

Not too hard to do since xbox one has basically 0 true exclusives. I think Halo titles are still exclusive for now, but that's it I think.

Jim, you were too nice to the XBone. It sucks. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and the XB1 is the most disappointing console I've ever owned. Well, OK, second most disappointing. The Game Gear was worse.
In addition to the horrid UI which you rightfully trashed, there's the simple fact of the matter that the console barely works. It works when it wants to. Am I going to be able to load my saved game in Borderlands 2 today or not? Will I get thrown back to the title screen after playing for 5 minutes? How about Final Fantasy XV? Does it feel like loading today, or am I going to get a "Game took longer than expected to start" popup after 2 minutes of staring at the home screen? TH-cam app? Flip a coin, maybe it will work, maybe it won't. I could give another 20 examples of games and apps working or not at random, but I think you get the point.
Blu Ray player? Last time I tried to use it, the audio was a full second behind the picture. Switched to a second disc, same story. Switched to a third disc, same again.
This system is a barely working piece of shit and I deeply regret the money I spent on it. Literally the only console exclusive I own is Killer Instinct. Everything else is also available on PS4, which I also own. This was money poorly spent and I wish I could go back in time and slap myself before I spent it.

I like mine so far. As far as worst consoles I have owned, it's far away not the worst, as I owned a 32X and a Virtual Boy. It's not the best (NES, SNES, and PS1 was an awesome era) but not the worst either.
Can we also take a minute to remember that Microsoft went from having the MOST offline friendly console to the absolute LEAST?
The 360 had baked in System Link(wireless, even for the later versions) in addition to a lot of splitscreen functionality for first party titles and the console never prevented me from playing a game offline.
The Xbone has virtually ditched splitscreen AND offline LAN/system link while simultaneously creating a platform that will lock me out of my games, even for offline play, if I didn't download or forgot to download an update
Couple all this with everything Jim said in the video and, you know what? Yeah the Xbone is pretty fucking shit. I've always been an Xbox fan, but Sony and frickin NINTENDO are blowing them out of the water. It's like they're not even fucking trying anymore

A modder was able to fix it by just fixing a typo in the code.
Not even a typo in the code, a typo in an ini file. They put key parts of the AI in an ini file, fucked it up, and never noticed or cared that they did.
The biggest disapointment is that Xbox did not become the next water cooler.

I think the slow death of call of duty is one of the big reasons for the xbox decline. people would buy the xbox over the play station to play with their friends on the biggest game every year: cod. While cod still sells well, does it really maintain the crazy high player base anymore? I think not. Also the PC became more popular this go around.

Another reason the PS3's popularity was much lower than the 360 was because it launched later and had a much higher asking price. But more than that, the main thing that really held the console back for the first half of its life span, was the operating system. Their dumbass OS was too complicated and weird for most developers to get used to, whereas the 360 was basically a small PC at its roots. This is why so many early PS3 titles looked obviously lower quality than games we'd see in the console's later stages, yet still struggled to get 30fps. Developers simply had a hard time understanding the OS and it was hard for them to optimize the games.
This of course changed as years went on, and we all know what happened - the PS3 later got a huge EXPLOSION of great games, and in a way, had the last laugh of that generation. Many say the 360 won that generation because of its more consistently good line of games, but the PS3 eventually caught up.
Well anybody who says 360 won that gen is just wrong, PS3 outsold 360 despite a year less time on the market and a fuck up of a launch. PS3 also had a better line up of varied, critically acclaimed exclusives, for example PS3 absolutely massacred 360 for GOTY winning exclusives. PS3 didn't just have the last laugh that gen, it won that gen. Of course that's if you don't count Nintendo who had two consoles releases during that gen, the Wii was really the winner of that gen, 360 finished last.

It’s not exactly the same thing, but I actually miss subscription models from the early 2000s instead of micro transactions.
Vlad Dragos I could be wrong, but I think Nexus is talking about games that REQURE monthly subscriptions to play, instead of you being able to pay once then play forever.
I agree that there'd be more temptation there if games were in a subscription model like Game Pass, but publishers have shown they're willing to stuff all that into games even for $60-100+ and have no shame, so it wouldn't really be a huge change for a lot of them. Not that that's an excuse, cause fuckery is still fuckery, but at least with a subscription model, people could try out a game and see how they are without the initial investment of buying it.

I liked the xbox 360 but hate the xbox one. The stupid power button is touch sensitive and I always touch it by accident. The user interface sucks ass. I had a hard time finding original xbox games in the marketplace. Another problem is that my achievements never pop immediately. I remember playing cuphead and a handful of my achievements never popped until the next time I turned it on. Another thing is that I always lose my wifi connection and have to hard reset the damn thing just for it to pick up. Another problem is that my controller just refuses to connect to the console even though it worked fine the day before. I don't hate Xbox. I just want them to do better. Team up with sega like you did when the dreamcast died. Fix your exclusive lineup. I love forza horizon but I can't play that forever.
Heyo Jim! don't know whether this is the best place to put this, but I was wondering what your opinions are regarding Magic the gathering Arena (especially in comparison to hearthstone). Magic is one of my favorite games, period. But as with anything you love, I am uniquely acquainted with its flaws, not least of which is the inherent pay-to-win aspect that many players are put off by. For me, I've learned the ins and outs of the economy of paper magic, buying "singles" from game stores rather than buying packs, etc (it's actually quite fascinating).
However, I'm quite conflicted and intrigued by MTGA's economy as well as the game itself. If you don't put any money into the game, you can grind wins in order to earn in-game currency, with which you can compete in tournaments for more currency or packs of cards. Occasionally in a pack (or once you've opened enough packs - it's been changing as they've been figuring it out themselves), you pick up a wild card. these wildcards can be exchanged for any card of the same rarity, regardless of its competitive viability or real-world cost.
it's strange, and I don't give it any justice with my explanation (you may have to research it yourself... sorry) and I'm interested in your viewpoint, as an outsider to the game of magic, but very much knowledgeable of the business of games.

Honestly I don't think Microsoft would even still be in the game market if Sony hadn't screwed the pooch so hard on the PS3.
I can't imagine they would have thought it worth it to compete if the PS3 had been as fast a seller as the PS2.

Monster Hunter World is about to be released on Steam with DRM hooked up and ready to go via Denovo and its causing a heck of a ruckus on the discussion going back and forth over it. What's your take? Also the game is being released at full price A half a year later despite being a pc port, which is a tid odd, normally PC versions tend to shave a few bucks since there is no physical disc and are usually 10 bucks less or so. Not sure how to feel about that.

I feel the same way about the XB1 currently, and I've been an xbox fan since the OG days of Halo: Combat Evolved. That's the thing that actually bothers me about the Xbox One right now, too. At E3 they trotted out a new Gears, a new Forza and a Halo teaser. At this point, Xbox is like a classic rock band touring fairgrounds, trotting out their "greatest hits" every time, hoping to maybe recapture some of that old magic. Meanwhile I'm sitting here going "yeah, we expect that at this point, but what else do you got?!!!"
You do realize that God of War was like the 8th game in that franchise in even less time, right?

Something I found hilarious at E3 was the whole Kingdom Hearts thing. They were like "Yeah we got Kingdom hearts now!" And then Sony was like "Oh we're putting all the remasters in this one disc only for Playstation 4."
Oh my god, I'm SO SO glad someone finally said something. Breaking up with xbox was one of the hardest gaming decisions I've ever had to make. I've been with xbox for ever, since the start. Two months ago I went out and bought a PS4. It was CEO greed that ruined xbox. It wasn't bad machine, but the interface was crap, and the Xbox gold was....well....rapey.
It was a relationship that was loving at the start. i really loved xbox, but she got so toxic and abusive. She was jealous as hell and when she went to upgrade to xbox1 from 360 she wanted to be online all the time, watch me all the time like i was always cheating on her constantly. I wasn't! I loved her! I trusted her! but she just went...mental...I dunno..Anyway I decided enough was enough and i wouldn't join her in her xbox1 phase.
She got scared and said she'd change! She said there wouldn't be any constant online watching, that she did trust me, and even said we could enjoy all our old games together again through backwards compatibility (and I had a huge amount of back catalogue. BIG library,)
Boy did I get sucked in. Backwards compatibility was awful, and NONE of the old games we used to play together were on it.
And she wanted me to register everything online. And she always, always wanted money. i don't know, maybe she had a drug issue, I don't know.
One day i mustered the courage and I said it was over. I left her.
Now I am in a relationship with PS4. She treats me ok, and her library is better than xbox1. But, I dunno, it'll take a while to heal and learn to love a console again.
I try to look back on the good times with fondness, Xbox original and 360 days. We had fun. There were goodtimes. I try not to let the memory of her psycho bullshit in later years and her greed and her coldness and resentment of me ruin those memories.
All through it though PC & Steam were good friends, and very supportive. In fact we're gonna hang out tonight. We do that a lot. They're what i call true friends. They never ask for money like xbox1 did, and they trust me.
My advice - if xbox1 calls, run. Run away. That bitch is fucking crazy and NOT worth it.

I guess I'm old. I saw the xbox as this odd and unpleasant interloper. I was the observer as my friends found this attractive woman and got to know her. She stopped wearing makeup and soon stopped having sex with them. Their paycheck wasn't enough, she asked for more and more than they had to give, but contributed little to nothing. they had their arguments. they came to understandings. they made promises. but she always broke them. I found myself always wondering dafuq?

It's gross negligence to me that Sony hasn't, at the very least, given me my PS1 collection I bought on PS3. Such a waste of money. Microsoft is literally the only gaming company getting this right. Nintendo also has a giant stick up their ass. They want to turn their old NES games into a monthly service and I'm sitting here like...bitch I purchased them multiple times over the course of my life and I might as well pirate them on my phone because it's free and plays great.
I do agree both fanbases are awful at times, the only time you can get a decent conversation with gamers about anything these days is if they own all platforms and even then, some of em still fanboy over one of em, doesn't make much sense but people love to argue for no reason.
I mean, I prefer the Xbox One over PS4 because of Forza and Halo. I've seen most of the exclusives on the PS4, and the only one that I'd really buy is Persona 5. Halo 5 wasn't great, but I enjoyed Halo MCC, and Forza's pretty much never bad.
Jacob Paul and no one can fault people on what games they like/prefer. The issue we have nowadays is fanboys on both side of the fence are stopping conversations and being toxic. You never get to a decent respectful conversation whenever they arrive. See I prefer the Sony exclusives, you prefer the Xbox exclusives, this ain't a war, it ain't politics, can't we all just get along? Maybe I'm too optimistic...

It is a well made game with tight mechanics and a good time to just chill with your friends, it just doesn't have much to do.
Sea of Thieves has two kind of players. Those who enjoy making their own narrative and role playing as a pirate, and those who expect a constant stream of story content. I, for example, love sea of thieves because I get to sail a my pirate boat across a vast and beautiful ocean. I hate, hate, hate the Assassins Creed gameplay, but goddamn, I spent like 60 hours just sailing around, being a pirate, and ignoring the story. I never finished the story past 20%, and I never will. I just wanted to sail my pirate ship. Sea of thieves has the pirate ship without the shit mechanics and story that make me want to rip my eyes out.
I tried to play the demo, first game I joined I got locked in a brig INSTANTLY and was then taunted by 3 guys laughing at me in a language I didn't understand. I quit. Tried again a week later, same thing. Deleted the beta.
I typically heard about this happening when people were trying to invite their friends but randoms joined in their place. Since there isn't a vote to kick option you basically had to shame them out of your game.

I also find myself agreeing. I bought it to play Halo, because i’m far too invested in that vegatative state of a franchise. Then Horizon Zero Dawn, and Nier Tomato Joke, and God of War, and that persona one that people love happen, and all I’m left with is this feeling of loneliness and regret.

Caved in and bought a Switch. I was weighing my options on which console to get; either a PS4 for it's exclusives or a Switch for it's versatility. XBox never came into discussion. Why would I bother with a Microsoft console when I have a PC already?

People keep being surprised that Nintendo is doing well, but they are still the only ones that care about making games that are fun to play with innovative concepts. PS4 definitely does best next to that, but Nintendo is running this generation tbh. It just doesnt host the AAA games we see on PS4 and Xbox One.

Yea if you also have a PC then its kind of shit but if you can only afford to buy a console then its not bad at all because exclusives or not, you get to play many many good games including games from previous generation AND you can play with your friends on PC and the switch...

The highest tier parts yes, but you can get better than console parts for relatuvely good prices that last longer than the console cycle itself.
Also a PC is easier to maintain, repair and upgrade than a console. I would've already used more money on my 3 year old PS4 than I have on my 5 year old PC.
Also PC offers the ultimate library of games if you're willing to get some of the older games to work or emulate some games.

Aaron Daniels which ones, the ones through the game pass? You need to be online for that to work. The games for gold? Those they say you have to have a gold subscription for so online again. So those games are all non playable when offline. But anything you've actually paid for to be downloaded to you console, and I mean the console you've downloaded it to, you'll be able to play them. So anything you've paid directly for is yours too party, anything tied to a service you need that service and you knew it before you signed up.

The last time I had no internet I just downloaded games I had deleted that I owned to give me extra to play. Also all games on disks will play and they will keep their updates.
This is actually incorrect. As long as the Xbox you are using is set as the home Xbox, then GwG and Game Pass games are playable offline.
GhostNappa game pass games not playable at all with no connection, just tested. Switching yourself to offline on the console doesn't actually make you offline, it just tells people you are.

I do agree with your statements here about the system. When I bought mine back in 2015, I hooked it up and found out I couldn't play anything for a good few months because we didn't have the best possible internet. Once we did that, it worked better, but still wasn't great. My reason for even getting the system was for Batman: Arkham Knight, and I could have gotten the PS4 just the same to play it. And there are many titles that I would love to play, but can't because they are PS4 exclusives (examples would be Bloodborne and Until Dawn). The issue is you really don't know what to expect until you make a decision on which console you plan to get, and it's up in the air which one will be the better of the two. I will say though, since I do also PC game, that I might just consider getting the next Sony system when the next gen comes around just because I can get Microsoft games anyway, with or without the newest Xbox.

When Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One games will launch on Windows 10 Simultaneously they shot themselves in the foot bigtime. That'd be like Sony going hey guys you can also play Uncharted 4 on Windows 10 when it launches alongside PS4. It's a dumb idea to begin with, yeah they think they'll maximize profits even more but in reality pc gamers are gonna shrug their shoulders and be like "Ok so now you gave me a reason not to buy an XBox One"

I got my Xbox One around when the One S came out (didn't get an S cause it was sold out everywhere around me and didn't care to wait for restocks). I loved it when I was playing Quantum Break, Rare Replay, and even Sunset Overdrive. However, after finishing those games, my desire to play it dropped significantly. I still occasionally turned it on to achievement hunt a game or something, but I just played it less and less.
I got Gears 4 on it simply because it came with every Gears game and I wanted to try the series out, but only played a bit of Gears 1. I got Recore, but never took it out of the plastic. Now the system just sits there on my bottom shelf getting less play time than my older systems like my SNES and PS2.
I get why multiplayer fans or those who don't have a gaming PC may enjoy the system a lot more, but as someone who owns a gaming PC and can't stand multiplayer, it's just useless.
Pros of the Xbox One:
360 backwards compatiblility for a ton of favourite games (still waiting on Sonic Unleashed though)
The controllers are the best Ive ever used (although I've always preferred Xbox controllers to dual shock stuff. Joystick layout is important)
My SO and her daughter can play Minecraft with me while I play on my PC.

That's a short list to be honest an no I dont think anyone has to justify something they like. Jim is a critic, he's comparing X to Y and when the Xbone is stacked up against PS4/PC/Whatever, it falls short of the competition. Comparisons are very fair and the Xbone is a bit shit compared to it's competition.
I don't like the xb1 controller. The sticks feels too small and hard compared to the godly 360 controller and fab duelshock 4.

For me it's the opposite. The asymmetry of the Xbox controller throws me off and has just never felt right.

I consider the Xbox 360/PS3 era to be when I became way more conscious of everything around me and was able to see what was right for me. I got a 360 because my friend had one and it was less expensive than the PS3 at the time. I enjoyed those many years with my 360. But when this current gen came around I decided to switch over to the PS4 side for many reasons. And I definitely made the right choice there. And now I think I’ll be staying on this side when the PS5 hits. I may be on the Sony side forever now.

Hey Jim you should do an episode on the $30 Lucio emote for Overwatch! Exclusive to the Season Pass for the Overwatch league, when the season only has a week left in the season.
It's a stupid season pass for the Pro games. It grants a bunch of silly twitch benefits but mostly it gives you a handful of really plain color swap character skins and this new Lucio emote. Which they just revealed when the league was in the finals and has maybe a week left. Just a really shady cash grab attempt to boost season pass numbers before it ends.
Pretty much, they have to make "all the money" after all not just some of the money. The thing that is really silly is it destroys one of the major excuses blizzard defenders like to use. That OW content is just cosmetic and that every thing is earn able in game. Well with the Pink Mercy skin (That was for charity but still), the OWL skins and now this Lucio emote among other things more and more of OW game content are locked behind paywalls and not earn able in the game at all.
So the "it's just cosmetic" excuse still works I suppose, but it lost the other excuse in being unlock able via game play.

I've owned a One since launch. It was initially pretty terrible but over the years it has become a neat little machine. EA Access, Game Pass, Play Anywhere, cross play, backward compatibility, and the community side with clubs and organising tournaments. Swapped out for an X recently -- I do not regret my purchase.
Yeah, Microsoft needs to start putting real money in first party story driven games, which is what platform owners should do, just look at how successful Sony is being doing exactly that.
Oh, and State of Decay 2 suffers from the same problem as Sea of Thieves, it's yet another "live service", and turns out there's really not that much to do after a few hours of game play. Sure, whacking zombies sounds like fun, but even that gets boring after a while.

Scalebound & D4 were the reasons I bought an Xbox One when it released w/out Kinect. D4 was going places, but the ending was canned. When Scalebound was canceled I cried a little. Who cancels a Platinum game? Then NieR: Automata came out on PS4 and became one of the best games I’ve ever played. My Xbox is currently the equivalent of a knickknack, it’s just something I have to remember to dust.

It really sucks how the xbone has basically no exclusives. I always prefer Xbox live for my multiplayer gaming but it’s hard to justify a system just for that and backwards compatibility. That being said I still like my system and use the hell out of it
This is the thing, they've always had the advantage in the field of a unified, convenient multiplayer and chat system, which is why 100% of my friends game on XBox One, as they've all done since the 360 days, or in some of our cases before, on the original XBox. Microsoft identified a market demand and nailed it in their execution. On PC I need Discord, Mumble, and Teamspeak, with a whole list of servers, just to keep track of all the games I play there, and communicate with my guildmates. On XBox it's just me and my friends and a system which never requires me to fiddle with hamachi to get a game connecting.

I might play MCC every once in awhile, but other than that it just sits there, gathering dust. Sad to see Microsoft lose all the great reputation that they had last generation.

Yep. I work in retail and I generally suggest the PS4 over the xbox for good reason. Though, due to the nature of the retail I'm in, our age demographic skews very young...so the amount of time I have to point at the distinct age ranges that the big and popular games for those 2 are within is even more common. Because, as jim says, Nintendo is always off doing its own thing, so while those two compete for the latest 18 shooting graphic extravaganza, I'm left with very few options to sincerely recommend to the parent with the 8 year old.

One thing that I've noticed in regards to developers treating their games as "services" is that they all have events where you get unique loot that you'd otherwise wouldn't be able to get. Monster Hunter World is the prime example, along with Far Cry 5 and my newly acquire Phantom Pain (The only good thing Microsoft has done is give that game away for free in June).
The problem is that I have so many of these damn games that I have to basically pick and choose which ones to dedicate my time to. I have a job already, I shouldn't have to choose another freakin' job. In the end I choose none of the above and go play 7 Days to Die. It is actually enjoyable now.

It's probably too late to change, but at least Xbox is trying to improve after a good kick in the pants. While I don't advocate trusting any major game company at face value, I feel as if investing my money in Xbox would result in the least amount of being dicked over.
Also, am I the only person who doesn't hate Sea of Thieves? It's not for everyone, but I don't think any game is.

Three things that were left out here that are probably my biggest pet peeves about the system (apart from the awful OS):
1- When you buy a game for the console, you need to wait a solid hour to an hour and a half before you even get to play it. The installation and updates take way too long. Compare this to the PS4 or Switch where I buy a game and can usually get into it within 1 to 5 minutes.
2- If I put the system on sleep mode and open it the next day, it refuses to connect to the Wi-Fi. I have to close the system down completely and re-open it.
3- Often, if I leave the game disc inside the console and close it, the next day, the game will not load and give me an error message. I have to remove the disc and put it back in in order for the game to work.
It's a shame really because I like the Xbox One X. I love how gorgeous the games look on it but I have to put up with things that their competitors have gotten right.

Ugh. Rare. Yes, in hindsight, and knowing the state they were in at the time, I know why Nintendo didn't buy them out even though they'd effectively been pretty much THE second-party dev for them in the late SNES era and the n64's life in particular.
(long story short, the company was full of disgruntled employees, and by the end of the n64 era most of the talented developers that actually made all those amazing games had left, including the Stamper Brothers themselves.)
But you know, even knowing what a mess the company was in, and that with so much of it's major talent gone it may not have done anything particularly impressive regardless...
Microsoft definitely sucked out what little life and soul the company had left.
Turns out (based on accounts of various studios, including Bungie, Lionhead, Rare and a few others) being bought by Microsoft is almost as fatal as being bought out by EA.
Sure they won't officially kill you, but they'll mess with you to a great enough extent that it may just gut you completely, and leave you an empty husk...
And guess what Rare has looked like for most of this time...?
