February was ridiculous. Anthem, Apex Legends, Metro Exodus, Far Cry New Dawn, and Crackdown 3 all going head to head, and all of them demanding a silly amount of time.
The game industry is an uncoordinated mess of market saturation and nonexistent long-term planning. The industry wide adoption of "live services" with long content "roadmaps" is already at breaking point.
Companies have their hands around their own necks and we're supposed to believe everything is normal. This ain't normal.

This sums up the state of so many games so well. WoW: Legion, for example, didn't have significantly more content than WoD, it just gave you more reasons to do said content over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, while also requiring you to play at least 5x more than in previous expansions to keep up.

Yeah, that's kind of the problem with creating a very large, dense game like the AssCreed series or Elder Scrolls or whatever. They tend to overstay their welcome, and then you either feel guilty for giving up, or force yourself through and lose interest in the game and any existing/future sequels. A game can be too long, and many these days are.

    • @ArtumTsumia

Those shorter games that were able to focus on a fun core experience are exactly the ones I find myself replaying. I don't have the time to replay an 80+ hour game "just for fun" because in all reality, those 80 hours are probably "replaying" some core gameplay loop just to drag things out. Nothing against titles like _Skyrim_ or _Monster Hunter_ (I love that series) but they sacrifice "replayability" for longevity, that constantly evolving experience that builds off a feedback loop.

Too many financial analists in the industry that have little to do with actual gaming...
"We need to push Anthem out now cause market predictions for the next year indicate there will be no more demand for destiny-like shooter" - someone said. Forgetting the fact that there was a time, we would wait for a BioWare game with our tongues out for years, even if it were to be a golf simulator. Now, after rushed Andromeda, and more importantly - nightmarish Anthem, the percentage of gamers that would still do that is significantly lower. Great job, business analists.

HMMM...mmmmm..aybe its 4D chess! They purposefully killed off the Mass Effect Franchise after 3 had such a shit ending by pushing out Andromeda by an inexperienced team quickly, they'd still make sales on the game but no one could blame them at this point for pulling the plug on the franchise (or at least everyone would understand why a big bad corp would do that) then Anthem comes out to middling success so they can again make some money to keep them afloat but looks down in the dumps failure after failure, Mass Effect and Dragon age are essentially dead we think right? EXCEPT it was all an extremely long-con and the new Dragon age and Mass Effect will show a return to form of the type of RPG's that made Bioware it's name in the first place, consumers tired of hype campaigns will ramp up the hype on their own! All according to their masterful 10 year plan, IM NOT CRAZY, YOUR CRAZY!

While I agree that some analyst in the industry know shite about the market, and what makes a successful video game company, we have to remember that Feburary was just another November, who was another September, and that was another August - This Generation for games have been massive, but I do find Jim's issue with the number of games that came out on Feb 15-22 to be a smaller problem, not necessarily one to the majority of gamers.
The majority of gamers only bought the games they are interested in. The industry isn't per se choking itself, more like stuffing it's gut too fast with the same food over and over. Some people who bought Metro were less likely to buy Anthem, and play Apex, because most of those people wanted a Single player game, while those who bought Anthem, would more likely play Far cry, Apex and maybe crackdown. That's because they want more extensive games. So while I do feel for journalist and creators who have to suffer the cost of all these games coming out at once, rarely are they ever pleasing the same crowd with one review or impression, and that's what makes it's annoying for them, really.

This. I love Bethesda (obviously not F76) and CDPR epics, but no one has time for every game to be that. And live services are the bastardization of that, a game with 20 hours of content and 200 hours of grind. 10-20 hours of quality content is all I need from a game for it to be worthwhile. And if a game requires multiple playthroughs to do everything, please keep that thing under 20 hours. If someone wants to play through the same story 10 times good for them, but now if a game is less than 50 hours long it seems like multiple playthroughs are almost mandatory to get all the content. Just learn from Diablo 3 and add a fast paced adventure mode or something for people who want to experience every class/race/build/whatever.

As a horror game fan, I live by the old adage, "It's about quality, not quantity".
One of my favorite all-time games, Fatal Frame 2, can be beaten (by exploring all content in a single run- it has NG+) between 9-12 hours. And that is fantastic.
See Fatal Frame 2 does it correct by eating up more time with side content, multiple endings, harder difficulties, collectibles (in the way of capturing all ghosts) and all of that adds to the gametime.
Instead of a billion dumbass flags to collect and grindy quests that eat up time, it settles on content of merit and actual storytelling.
Can that be monetized in microtransactions? No, but these fucking vampires need to understand that sucking all of the life outta a game with nonsense isn't gonna last forever. Eventually, the blood runs out.

Being a college student, it's increasingly difficult for me to really invest in open world games or multiplayers anymore.
Gone are the days when you could easily squeeze in 30 to 45 minutes in a game and get a good experience out of it.
While Red Dead 2 is one of my favourite games, it was still agonizing to play through considering a busy schedule, and gaming is the only bit of entertainment I can easily digest.
No one has time for open worlds anymore. The best example I can give is of the Book Industry. Fiction evolved significantly with the times. Before people had time to just push in to large novels with hardly any real substance, seeing as no real competitors existed. Now? People hardly have time for big novels that need multiple sittings to finish. It's either novellas or short story collections which give a powerful and entertaining experience in a good 15 minutes.
But rather than staying at that position, the game industry is devolving, going backwards, thinking that people actually have time to play big games like this.
It seems like the gaming industry is competing with other entertainment industries for our time and money, but no one ever plays games every single waking moment of their life. These days, people scrape their time over different forms of media.
I'm just glad games like DMC5 and Sekiro are coming in March. Resident Evil 2 and 7 were the only real games I've played and enjoyed without crippling my schedule.

The main problem with AAA titles these days is a lack of depth. They expect to hold their audience on game-play through repetition alone and hoping that the map filled with time wasters is enough for most gamers. This is what happens when you try to make a game accessible to everyone in the vain hope that it will sell more copies. What they now have is a false accessibility where the game is easy to pick up and learn but just not fun to play.

I'd say it runs deeper than that (though your point is, I think, one of many valid surface issues to call out). In the main, the problem at it core seems to be that creativity and the advancement of the medium on an artistic level isn't even priority 2, much less priority 1. In the AAA space, I'm not sure it even exists on a list of priorities at all at this point (I'm sure you can find contradicting exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, it's a wash).
Were that a significant priority, these companies would have the money to find the right skilled designers to build their games and do them really well. It's not a herculean task. But instead, they'll do things like push out creative people and foster environments in which profit is more important than anything else and creativity doesn't really matter.
And of course, relating to the point you make, the schemes of monetization mean that it's not necessarily a good thing for a company to release a game that is incredible to play for $60 as is and doesn't need any kind of live service updates, or DLC, or microtransactions, or season passes, or loot boxes, or gold editions, or silver editions. Leaving a game in a depth-lacking state is likely more often intentional than not in the AAA space these days. And I'm not sure it's because of an attempt to have mass appeal; I think it's because it's cheaper to do than something obscenely creative that may fail and it's because leaving people wanting is what helps sell more and more and more products relating to the game.
Edit: There is also a possible psychological argument to be made that the types of games made in the AAA space these days are more likely to burn peoples' brains out in the ways that they latch onto addiction and dopamine triggers, and cause people to become more exhausted in general with the whole prospect of playing a video game. I never remember feeling particular worn out playing a game like KOTOR other than normal tiredness from staring at a screen too long, but I can remember feeling like I never wanted to play a game ever again after chasing meaningless "rewards" from daily quest completion in an MMO. To put it one way, I think game loops that lack no convincing argument of meaning for the player are depressing.

      @ACE1918 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@TransparentLabyrinth TransparentLabyrinth You've actually hinted at one of the things that actually goes further into what I would argue is the main problem, that being creativity and innovative design can actually run counter to a game's perceived accessibility. Allow me to explain.
The main driving force behind the argument of making games more accessible is that it will appeal to a wider audience and more people will want to play it, in theory anyways. To a publisher it would seem therefore that making the game more accessible will always lead to higher sales. The problem is that any personality within a particular game may have to be tossed aside for this ideal of accessibility as quirks would make the game seem less accessible. For example, a franchise that is known for having hard difficulty (such as for example the Ninja Gaiden games) may see their difficulty reduced to make it easier for more people to play them. You could argue "why not just add an easy mode" but then the publisher would simply ask "why does the standard difficulty need to be so hard," which is more or less what killed Ninja Gaiden 3 and that reboot franchise in general.
We can also see the argument of accessibility being used to even butcher entire genres like what happened to the horror genre last gen. As nutty as it sounds, not everyone likes scary games, unfortunately one of the ways publishers tried to make these games appeal to more people is by making them less scary and therefore more accessible. It actually makes sense then why they would add needless coop modes to horror games when having multiplayer is the fastest way to make a game less scary.
Another way to make your game more accessible is to copy the things other publishers are doing as well, this is because they are following established game mechanics and therefore someone who has played games of a particular genre before will be able to jump right in without difficulty. It is important to note that sometimes the copycat is actually able to outpace the original in terms of popularity. Call of Duty itself gained its biggest successes after copying ideas from the Halo and Battlefield franchises, even even copying entire missions from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and putting them into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Back to what you've said, there is one thing I must categorically disagree with you on, and that is the notion that games with creativity are more expensive than the things AAA publishers put out these days. The indie market in general has demonstrated that it is fully capable of making games more creative and carving out niches all the while lacking the capital or resources of EA or Activision.
I've even done a video myself on this whole issue in far greater depth:
      th-cam.com/video/5ZnguvKLsVs/w-d-xo.html
TL;DR Creativity and Accessibility can often be outright at odds and Publishers are constantly siding with Accessibility.

To be honest it probably would've had to have been one back in 07 too, to get a wholly singular release. Well to be fair it DID start out as an indie title. Valve, much like Double Fine and some other developers, used to look to indie games quite a lot and hold game jams and such to generate ideas that they could later choose from when making a larger project. Of course, Valve doesn't make games at all anymore, so the only way we could get a good new official Portal game would be if they let the original developers go and sold the license back to them (which, naturally, they would never ever do).

I don't know how to fix the AAA industry, but from an individual perspective, one way to stop feeling suffocated by the ever growing pile of life-consuming AAA games, is to simply play less of them.
Seriously. If big budget games won't respect your time, then you have to start respecting it yourself.
Feel like Anthem, Apex, Far Cry, Metro or Crackdown demand too much from you? Then bin 'em. Move on. Don't sweat it. Play something you actually want rather than what EA, Ubisoft, Deep Silver or Microsoft's marketing budget tells you to play.
The hype and "conversation" isn't that important. There are no special rewards for being on the ground floor for every release.

Also, this made me realize something. The most recently released game on my shelf is... Nier Automata, released in 2017. The other major titles were all released in 2016 (Persona 5, Ys 8, Dark Souls 3) or earlier. In the past two years, I've only bought rereleases of older games (FF X HD, NES Classic, SNES Classic).
Last Gen, I bought lots of new games on release day and bought DLC for those games - and all of them were dedicated, story-driven single player experiences. Since the current generation began, I've bought fewer and fewer games (even though I now have more time to play games) and instead turn more and more to playing older titles from the PS3 era and older. Triple A publishers have completely stopped getting money from me at this point - they lost me as a customer due to the Live Service model and lack of single player games.

I'd rather play those things called video games that have beginnings, middles and ends. Or better yet, I'd rather just play any regular multiplayer game that's confident enough in itself to not constantly nag me to log in and "collect" my daily achievement.

Its the same thing in almost every industry. Look at whats happening to video streaming services. It uses to be just Netflix. Now Disney is making one, HBO has one, there's Hulu, Amazon, crackle etc. Basically, every channel has a streaming service now. Hell, some companies have multiple different streaming services. And do you know what they are going to do with that. THey are going to start to bundle the streaming services together for a cheaper price and then were back to square one.
The same thing will happen in the game industry. Currently, Microsoft and EA have a subscription service. Eventually, Activision will make their own, then Ubisoft, etc. Subscription services are bullshit for the video game industry. It's just a way to fuck over retail and lower peoples standards by thinking oh this game only cost me X number of dollars. Not to mention they can steadily keep increasing the price and most people won't notice because they don't look at their credit card statements or forget they even have the subscription. Hell game pass now is in the reeling people in phase. Offering free months cheap months etc. Then after people get used to the idea of game pass they will phase out the deals and steadily start increasing the price.
And dont even get me started on the game streaming. Then next bullshit meme of the video game industry

But that's just me, some people buy games thrice yearly, some weekly and some quarterly, or monthly, people are different, so I find it senseless to say, shorter is better.

They and their most important investors are getting money now. The CEO and other top dickheads have golden parachutes. When/if Activision Blizzard goes bankrupt, Bobby Dickhead will have his billions, he will get another CEO level job, the top investors will pull out early and get their money. Who will face the consequences? The honest worker and lower tier investors. And Bobby definitely doesn't give a single fuck if Bill from QA will be able to feed his newborn child when they crash.

In fact, this behavior isn't even exclusive to the TRIPUL AYYYY side. I remember about a decade ago when WoW was still good (yes, it's been that long!), there was some unknown company that made 11 different MMOs. You read that right, ELEVEN separate MMOs by one company. I don't think any of them even lasted a year, because nobody was playing them, surprise surprise. The point is, if you want to be a smash hit, you have to stand out. Playing it safe is ironically an easy way to fail.

And the thing is: Mostly those 200h+ are filled with time sink content like FedEx missions or "kill 200 of X and 300 of Y". It's possible to sink several hundred hours into those games, but in the end nothing of value remains. You won't remember those 50 hours of grind. What really remains are memorable characters and stories. Hopefully, other publishers and developers are able to offer more 'mid-range games' like "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice" that offer good, memorable experiences without unnecessary filler and time sink material.

Yep, game length is not everything. If a studio you trust is making a game that is being led by designers and writers and directors that you trust, then we need to just trust them. If their creative drive leads them to make a shorter game, then they should do exactly that. If they genuinely want to leave out MP or something, then they should do that. If they want to make the game long because it genuinely does feel like part of their vision, then they should do that. Some of the best gaming experiences I've had have been games that had shortish story-lines. It's all about context.
