Adding on a tip from music practicing, which is to try techniques in different situations. Not necessarily because its a good choice at high level.but to make sure you can pull it off anywhere anytime. For example shine bair, practicing it offstage would really add pressure
For any SSBM players, practice ur spacing!. If your like me and straight up think of matchups as a kind of RPS with different options, it will get very frustrating when an option ''supposed'' to beat another option still loses. Timing spacing and positioning is very very important and is the reason why top top players can beat you with 1 move.
Really great subject that I think a lot of people don't really focus on. Playing unranked blindly is a rabbit hole I find myself going down frequently, when I should be focusing more on analysis and labbing. Good stuff.
I don't think people talk about mentality in esports as much. As someone that struggles with this, I can't thank you enough. I think this will help me IRL, too. I think of you as my spiritual guru even though I don't play melee
I've been playing for less than a month and i want to get started on the right foot. I feel like there's a lot to explore from this video. Thanks for making these, I really appreciate your content and your perspective
PP! Love your channel, I have some advice for you though. Brand your videos. Give them a title that let’s the viewer know what they’re in for. So like instead having the title being, “how much should you practice?” I think a cool name would help. Maybe like, “Melee wisdom | How much should you practice?” OR “PPMD Wisdom | How much should you practice?” I just made those up off the top my head so not the best examples, but something that makes it feel like a series so the expectation is set ya know. Loved the video!
PP! You’re my favorite player and your insight is so good. I can’t help but feel the script is a bit awkward for the format- you might as well type this out on a reddit post. I think Toph does a good job making longer vids seem natural. Let that personality shine through- after all we came for the big P!! (;
@@PPMD1 I like that your talk isn't heavily edited and chopped up though! That fast snappy style of video essay has it's merits, but it can be distracting and overstimulating (not to say Tophs content is like that. I'm a fan.) You're an articulate and elegant speaker, so that gives you a unique edge to command a more natural and focused attention in my opinion.
@@PPMD1 While I think it's fair to want a little more entertainment value, I find that the straightforward speech forces me to think on your words soberly instead of getting a dopamine rush that is kind of ultimately distracting
Can you do a video on defensive play and techniques for Falco? Things like crouch canceling, combo DI, Smash DI, counter-hitting etc. Thanks, love the content!
Hey PP, I love the content and insight as always, and appreciate that you can bring in other fields. I found the visualization aspect very interesting, something that I have very minimally applied. One example is when watching top players, I sometimes envision myself in their position and then note that there is a divergence between their actions and what I would do. Are there any other examples you can provide on how you or Smash players use visualization within your practice routine? Can it be used to practice tech, for example, visualizing yourself performing the inputs for a wavedash, or is it better for keying in on a certain situation and imagining various things you can do within it? Looking forward to the next video!
Yeah tech skill is one of the best places to visualize. It helps you get more consistent. Another would be mentality. Imagining yourself winning is very big for so many athletes!
@@PPMD1 I just squealed in excitement in front of my girlfriend after seeing your reply and she gave me a funny look. What an honor! Thank you for your feedback!
I agree with most of this, including the visualization section’s conclusions, however the study that gets frequently referenced of free throws isn’t real. You can’t find it and if you search around you can find out the comments that started it aren’t substantiated. It just doesn’t exist and hasn’t been replicated.
Hey PP! You should consider overlaying images of the studies you talk about and maybe highlight the important areas in the image. Would be a nice addition to your scientific approach to educating players :)
For first person shooters, "practice" and "friendlies" are technically the same exact thing. Problem for me is that I do not know how to analyse and if I ask another pro player for a demo review, everything they point out idk how to work around because when I try to avoid 1 issue it creates another. Like if I play too aggressive and the fix is to be more passive, then I become too passive. I also do not know how to apply stuff I see in tutorials.
Maybe you should find someone that can teach you how to analyze. Giving you more tools in the toolbox over just asking handyman to come over every now, and then to take a look at all the holes
@@dazeen9591 I think you're underselling yourself. People that analyze plays weren't born that way, and plenty of them have gotten pointers in taking footage apart from other people. But if you really believe so, then another suggestion I can make is playing with people somewhat better than you, that can give you constructive criticism. If whatever game(s) you play are team-based, that is.
Dude, I started playing melee about 2-3 ish years and my gc controller is slowly on it's way out. Regardless, I'm having fun playing friendlies every day.
I sometimes get burnt out playing for more than 4 hours in Melee so idk if I really want to delve in to getting that good. My passion was there before to play nearly 5 hours but nowadays I want to chill while improving slightly or at least just keep my consistency despite having less of a workload lately lol. But yeah anyway appreaciate the advice.
focus on the road when you're driving though!! i dont actually know how i feel when you say stuff like "this is just my opinion you can discard this if you want to" because to me it feels implied in the video, but the way you restate it makes it devalue the point somewhat. i know it's in your nature not to come off as too imposing but in videos where you are sharing lots of ideas, if you could maybe find a way to be more assertive in that this helps you/people you have worked with, and maybe talk about the benefit it seems to bring in the melee sense it'd come across stronger? just a thought from a big fan
I think it depends on the person. Some people are more receptive to ideas and others not so much. For those who aren't, they might look the other way if they feel that they are being told what to do, and hence a disclaimer like "this is just my opinion" may help to soften that. In my opinion, it's even more truthful, since what's presented is technically an opinion. Compare it to those clickbait videos who headline with something like "You MUST WATCH THIS to get better at Smash", but has relatively uninformative content. The person delivering can be assertive but also feed you misinformation, and I think that's worse. I agree with you in that there are ways to deliver assertively without necessarily imposing on someone's views, like saying "this is something that has worked for me and other players" and not including the "you can choose to use this or not" part. As viewers/listeners, we should also try to see past the cruft and extract what's important for ourselves.
That's fair. I could probably just say it's my opinion and you can do what you want with it, which is more neutral. Saying you can discard it does devalue it some I agree.
I tried your visualization technique while driving and now me, my wife, and my children are all dead. JK I am alive and do not have a wife or children! Great video, I like this direction. Curious what's next.
I don't know too much about this, but I would imagine you could possibly move your hands on your own to simulate doing the inputs if your hands can recall. Otherwise perhaps playing the sounds in your mind or hearing the controller sounds?
PP, whenever I hear your interviews you talk about sharing what you love about the game, and its so apparent in your content!!
