  • The Huawei P40 Pro is a product of massive changes for the company, but despite having no Google services, this device has a ton to offer. JV goes through the parts of this phone that still count, how to navigate the AppGallery and Huawei Mobile Services, and why the whole situation means most of us miss out on a pretty awesome smartphone.

I feel like we should take a step back and have a hard think about how much Google is an impactful thing in our lives, we shouldn't be dependent on it this much. Monopolies are never a good thing.

Technically since Apple is around, Google isn't considered a monopoly, even though we'd all lose a lot if Google went down.

it's kind of the same with microsoft. where would we be without windows, Office etc. And Facebook, who has an iron grip on social media.
There are alternatives. People just don't want to use them because they just flock to wherever the majority is. And this is very true for ecosystem-based technologies like an App Store or a messaging platform. A lot of people in my country depend on Whatsapp as it became the de facto messaging app used for personal and for work. Thats a lot of people who won't be able to escape facebook and just switch to Telegram simply because their contacts aren't on there.

I dont know how focused Huawei team is on abt getting all the local commonly used app onto their Huawei App Gallery for your country (referring to lifestyle apps here, as i hardly play mobile games nowadays so i wont know). I live in Singapore, half year ago it was probably abt 20% of wat google app store, and i went to check recently and am shocked to find out that they already have 80%~90% of them on Huawei App Gallery. With such speed they are working at, i say it is worth giving them a chance.

@@granddeluxe123 For awhile everything worked perfectly. About a month ago it stopped being able to update Netflix through the Play Store. Doesn't bother me though, because I can still use the Netflix app regardless. The tutorial I watched to install it was from a TH-camr named RedSkull I believe. Which just involved a factory reset, and following his steps of installing certain processes at specific points in the set up process. You will need an usb-c card reader though. All in all, took about 10-15 minutes or so. Just recently got the EMUI 11 update, and Google Services still works perfectly on it after the software update.

I have an important suggestion for you.
For these foreign phones you should do a speedtest.net to check their network speeds. This is because most of them are missing certain bands that would make them as fast as US counterparts.
I would pay an extra few hundred dollars for a phone that gets me 20-100mbps (or higher) download speeds and than one that gets 4-8mbps even if all other things are equal or close.
Just do a quick speedtest.net comparison with say a fast 4g phone (iPhone) or a 5g phone (galaxy or LG phone etc). That would definitely help my purchase decisions.

I dont know how focused Huawei team is on abt getting all the local commonly used app onto their Huawei App Gallery for your country (referring to lifestyle apps here, as i hardly play mobile games nowadays so i wont know). I live in Singapore, half year ago it was probably abt 20% of wat google app store have, and i went to check recently and am shocked to find out that they already have 80%~90% of them on Huawei App Gallery. With such speed they are working at, i say it is worth giving them a chance.

I’m just happy my old huawei mate 9 makes my mom happy considering it’s a phone that came out in 2017 it was ahead of its time. Sadly stuck on android 8.0 but still has access to all google apps and play store. Still as fast as the day I got it. My mom loves it as well. Lol

I get used to using Android OS with GMS and I'm ok to use it without only in a case when all other services will be at the same helpful level.
If you in China you still do not need GMS and this phone is one of the best, but if you're at another place than this is another question.

Why not just have a bit of a top bezel rather that a cutout? A top bezel is much less distracting.

Yes without GMS is the new normal. Only if they can find a way to link all the paid services together. Or ask the app dev to provide email/serial number authentication.

Tried it for 48 hours, but to many essential apps ( for me ) don't have a non GMS option, the phone its self : fantastic (after my OnePlus 7t pro and Huawei p30 pro) the smart features of Huawei are really great, it's much smarter then other phones, but due to the fact that essential apps don't have a work around a sadly had to return it and switch back to the p30 pro, hope that Huawei fixes these issues soon so I can switch

I've had the Mate 20 Pro & the P30 Pro and when I get to pick a new phone in a couple of months, it's probably the P40 Pro or I might wait for the Mate 40 Pro. I don't care about the restrictions; I'll make it work.

Nice balanced look at an exceptional smartphone. For those of us who are tech savvy it's a great smartphone. Likewise for those prepared to put in a relatively small amount of effort. For those Googleholics who don't want to it in any effort keep away I guess. My next smartphone will be either this or the upcoming Mate 40 pro

I heard you mention the size of the display being great at least twice but never heard what size the screen actually is? Apologies if I am stupid and deaf and you did say it (I'm old). Great review. Thanks. I am due an upgrade and we have no such ban of Huawei here in England and this device looks excellent.

    • @Georgeklee
      @Georgeklee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

If I may, the size of the display is 6.58" diagonal. The dimension of the phone is 6.23" × 2.86" × 0.35". It fits comfortably on an average Joe's palm.

I would love Huawei support for bootloader unlock like Xiaomi - without losing warranty scenario. They should allow it - dev friendly aosp non emui rom with great hardware... and they should lower its price a bit. That would fit me perfectly! Even though I don't like Samsung for the same price - Samy + Google is much better than Huawei + emui (i admit maybe name of their Android skin is wrong - last time used it with p9 lol).

I really think that Huawei should make a linux phone and call it a day. Plenty of software and software support available around the world.
On a side note, for those who a Huawei phone and want a google app, just download TH-cam vanced. It is a modified youtube app that has no ads and runs in the background. You're welcome.
