    Another example of the United States making a response to a European scene with a more angry attitude is punk. I am of the belief that punk belongs to the UK. But the United States can lay claim to hardcore. Stripped down. More angry. No studs and leather. Just sweatshirts and jeans but much faster and stripped down. Punk is European originally, but the United States' response was hardcore.

      @@jackattak1209 would you say there is or are European punks bands that predate the Stooges and MC5? I know those two can be considered proto-punk, but I think they've been cited as the two forerunners of the genre enough to make a solid case for them.

    • @jackattak1209
      @jackattak1209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@richardwhitehead40 I don't think have any bands from the UK that predate Stooges/MC5. But while I LOVE those bands, I think proto-punk is a perfect descriptor. Same applies to Ramones imo. But punk really came to form with those late 70s UK bands. Again, no disrespect to iggy or MC5. Just my perspective!

      @@jackattak1209, I can go with that. Honestly when I was younger the "who did what and when" mattered a lot more to me. Now I spend more time appreciating the new music I'm able to discover that I like and disregard the music nerd elitism. Or at least try to. I was kind of hoping you were going to fill me in on a band or two that I'd missed. Always on the lookout for new stuff.

    USBM excels when it goes beyond boundaries of what is considered "Black Metal" while remaining true to its spirit. The best example of this in my opinion is Agalloch, which might not have much black metal instrumentation, but is definitely black metal in its soul and atmosphere.

    I'm 45 and just recently dipped my toe into the black metal pool about 2 months ago. I knew nothing about it besides it sounded like death metal with a banshee singing over it when I first heard it in the mid 90s. And of course the sensational stuff that you learn in the first 5 minutes of looking into this genre. Digging a bit more I liked enough of what I heard of Burzum to look deeper and ended up at blackgaze and dark ambient stuff, stopping along the way to look into USBM like Weakling, Leviathan and Xasthur. Your videos have helped me quite a bit Just wanted to say thanks for helping an old dude whose musical curiosity got the best of him one day.

    This is an amazing video. I just found your channel a couple of days ago when I was looking for some background info and bands in the Death Metal and Black Metal Genres. I love music and have always listened to a lot of deathcore, metalcore, some more melodic death metal and more "mainstream" sounding or "palatable" metal acts but I have been getting more into experimental music and really crunchy, ambient, dissonant types of music not just in metal but in electronic and hip hop music as well. I have no background really when it comes to black metal so when I searched I found your channel. I was hooked immediately because of the down to earth vibe and the lack of any kind of condescending tone or anything like that in your videos. I can tell you are just a dude who loves all different kinds of music and knows a lot about these genres and that is that kind of channel I have been looking for. You ain't wrong about Sunbather. Like it or not, it's a modern classic and one of the most influential black metal albums of our time that will marked as a massive influence on USBM in the coming decades. It's far from my favorite, but its influence is observable and undeniable.
    Glad you at least mentioned the Cascadian BM scene, even if in passing. As a PNW local, and who played in a Cascadian band for a bit back when it was all the rage in 2012, it's a point of pride that our little area of the world had our own distinct style. It unfortunately is basically dead since it was largely just local bands that did it that didn't get much exposure, and the surviving bands don't really play the style anymore, but for awhile it was great going to a different Cascadian BM show every month and seeing all these great local bands with our own scene that you wouldn't be able to see anywhere else.
    The style does live on however, in bands like Stellar Descent and Evergreen Refuge, who've evolved it into a more long-form style of music. That'd be cool to see you talk about them as while it's insanely niche, it's just as unique.

    • @patrickbertlein4626
      @patrickbertlein4626 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stellar Descent is raw as fuck, even by black metal standards. Evergreen Refuge is more instrumental folk, some black metal influences but I think the genre hardly fits, definitely enjoy him/them was just listening to them while camping the other day.
      I don't know any actual black metal influenced by Sunbather, couldn't disagree more on that.
      It definitely was interesting to see how popular the genre, and especially Wolves, have gotten. Most of the bands are kind of boring though to be honest, same formula, same drumbeat, add some acoustic guitars, etc. But really if we are going to be talking about the genre, we have to mention Fauna, who coined the term.

    Austin Lun is a true gem of a person and makes such interesting blends of American Folk and BM. I like that he dropped the whole 'evil for evil's sake' for more political and personal ideas. Kentucky is one of my favorite BM albums, its got amazing riffs, lays out great history with the lyrics and I grew up with my dad listening to Folk and Bluegrass all the time so that aspect feels comforting and nostalgic. The pacing is great, letting you rest a bit.
    Also I've literally never heard of Profanatica, never shown up in related artist or come up in convos, but I definitely gotta check them out. Sounds fucking sick.

      Literally hundreds of bands are just about nature, history, or if it is darkness, its philosophical more than anything (never paid attention to Emperor?). People who say stuff like you just come off like you are relatively ignorant of the larger scene. Ulver, Arcturus, shit even Burzum has nothing to do with anything actual evil, just fantasy lore at most.
      And his stuff is alright, talented for sure but the best thing he did was the second part of Roads to North.

      @@patrickbertlein4626 same with Drudkh or hell, as much as I don’t like their music beyond their first record, Wolves in the Throne Room. There are so many bands new and old who have done the “folk BM” sound. From Drudkh, to Obsequiae, to Agalloch, to I’d go as far as to even say Ruins of Beverast. There is a hell of a lot of it out there that are arguably BETTER than Panopticon. Just my opinion, Drudkh and Agalloch are the best folk BM I’ve ever heard.

One thing I will say is what you described about Weaklings originality and Deafheavens fusions is that Agallach was pulling both of those ropes and did it a year with this record before Dead As Dreams.
