My roommate in college first exposed me to black metal at the tender age of 18. I still love the first albums I heard. As a closed minded hardcore kid I was not initially receptive to it but it opened a whole new realm once I shut up and listened. The first two Emperor albums, Darkthrone's unholy trinity, Moonspell "Wolfheart" and Cradle Of Filth "Cruelty And The Beast" still all have a special place in my black heart.

My first black metal experience was Grand Belial's Key's Kosherat, funnily enough. I came back to it every now and then over the years along with discovering Mayhem's De Mysteriis. Then I saw your black metal iceberg which led me to Blut Aus Nord's Hallucinogen and Deathspell Omega's Infernal Battles and I've been hooked ever since.

Nice, Midian by Cradle of Filth was the first album I really liked that leaned towards black metal, then the first 2 Dissection albums... I’m not super familiar with any of the albums you said after Tsjuder’s so I’ll definitely be checking those out

I remember getting into Black Metal through Folk Metal, I started listening to Folkish Black Metal bands like Nokturnal Mortum, Windir early Månegarm, etc. Then I got into DSBM and from that point I started looking for everything Black Metal was capable of, being Avant-Garde / Experimental / Dissonant Black Metal the style that surprised me the most (Paracletus was my introduction to that sonic apocalypse).

Interesting list! Kudos for Nightwork mention, I loved it when it was released, glad to see it gets recognition so many years later! My list would include Dissection "Storm of the Light's bane", Satyricon "Nemesis Divina" and my Hipster BM suggestions would be Solefald "the linear scaffold" and Sadist "Above the light". Keep up the great work!

My first experience with black metal was way back in 98/99 when i was shopping at my favorite music store Hastings. I saw this amazing album cover with a pentagram and was kinda scared but curious what it sounded like. I bought it used. Its Hecate Enthroned - The Slaughter Of Innocence, A Requiem For The Mighty. Now go back a couple years before that i saw a used cd but wasnt ready yet. That was Dark Funeral - Secret of the Black Arts.
Crimson Moon - To Embrace Vampyric Blood, Ancient - Cainian Chronicle, Emperor - IX Equilibrium, Mayhem - Live in Leipzig, Cradle Of Filth - Cruelty and the Beast, Rotting Christ - Triarchy of the Lost Lovers are some of my introductions to black metal.
I was surrounded with alot of extreme music around 98/99 thanks to my curiosity and my friends. We became addicted to music collecting and i'm still collecting music to this day. I'm still collecting stuff from the 90's too. You'd think i've had it all if you seen my collection. Right now i'm getting In Aeternum's 2nd, 3rd and 4th full length s plus few EPs i need. first album i already own. Elysian Fields - Adelain. They're from Greece and really good.

Gorgoroth is the shit man, especially their stuff with haat and pest on vocals. I started with burzum when I was like 12, and of course went to mayhem next and dove head first into that story and was pretty fascinated by how evil and esoteric it felt to like black metal. Now days it's nothing to know about it, but in the early/mid 2000s when kids weren't quite online all the time it was still somewhat shocking to the general public. I pretty much stick with most of/all the classic second wave bands and their respective catalogs these days along with some more obscure stuff like tundra, Ethos, and urgehal. But I might end up exploring more modern shit soon enough

My first introduction was in 1994: Dissection - The Somberlain. To this day is still one my favorite albums.Internet back then did not exist for me. So i went to a black-metal/death metal show and i saw a guy with a cardboard box full of xtreme metal albums for sale and he told me "these guys are good" so i trusted him and bought the CD (a ripped CD, not the original). It did not disappointed me.

For me the obsession started with death metal then I gradually found some black metal I enjoyed. Earliest ones I remember falling in love with were:
Megiddo- The Devil and the Whore
    Solefald- The Linear Scaffold
    Darkthrone-Transylvanian Hunger
    Ulver- Nattens Madrigal
Mortuary Drape- All the Witches Dance
    Fairytale Abuse- Her Dark Damnation
    Summoning-Stronghold
    Weakling- Dead As Dreams
    Krallice- Krallice
    Agalloch- Ashes Against the Grain
Pretty good beginnings and honestly all of these still remain towards the top of my list of favorites

When I was 17, I got introduced to Darkthrone from doing a plumbing job at this dude's crazy house (den would be more accurate). He had huge bighorn ram skulls mounted on the wall and candelabra's everywhere. The walls were black and lightfixtures were all this maroon red so you hardly see shit in the place. One thing I noticed in his massice CD collection was this band with bright white text called "Darkthrone". First album was "Under a funeral moon" and for my Melodeath loving ass, that was a bit unsettling at first, especially coming from that house. Dissection would be the band that warned me up to Black Metal eventually and now it's the majority of what I listen to. That extreme metal station on GTA 4 LaD had some real good stuff and I think "Call from the grave" was on it so Bathory was another early one.

My first exposure to black metal was when I was 16, and I bought a copy of A Blaze in the Northern Sky on CD. I put it in my portable CD player, listened to the first few songs, and returned it LOL. At the time it was just so fucking otherworldly and raw sounding. Something I wasn't quite ready for at the time, so I feel you on what you said about Gorgoroth.

Then Behemoth and Darkthrone were the two generic ones that followed. Dissection,Burzum, Mgla, and Deathspell Omega hit that black metal sweet spot for me so that got me hooked.

I got into black metal thanks to Bumzur and Mayham and Dankthrone.
But your thoughts on Gorgoroth is how I feel about Mayhem. Not too big on them (like a bit of De Mysteriis and Deathcrush, love the Dead era), but I still like them for being for my first.
Also WATCH OUT, You enjoy DsO, People are gonna REEEE.
    I'd say my albums were:

Mayhem - Deathcrush/De Mysteriis Dom Santhanas
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Leviathan - The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide
    Lifelover - Erotik

First time i listen to black metal was immortal - all shall fall and i dont like it . Then two months later i try again with some darkthrone (the first 3 albums) in a dark room with open door during winter and from that day on im in love with black metal .

Believe it or not my first taste of black metal was mayhem. It was back when all the church burnings were happening and back then, before the internet or even myspace. And it was still kinda scary back then and me and my friends wanted to see what it was all about.. then we found darkthrone and satyricon.. and now. I love black metal.

I was watching this video wandering why didn't u start like everybody else with the classics - Bathory, Mayhem, Darkthrone. "In The Nightsight Eclispse" did it for me - it clicked with me on the second listen and I became BM fan probably for life.

I am 52 and just started getting into black metal......a lifelong Black Sabbath, ACDC, Motorhead fan that has grown weary from listening to those same albums and bands of s similar ilk after 40 plus years...Jesus Christ, I NEVER need to hear Paranoid, Crazy Train, Ace OF Spades, Back In Black, Run To The Hills, etc EVER again. I started my black metal experience last summer with, predictably, Freezing Moon with Dead. As I pursued exploring new black metal bands, the history of, especially, Mayhem and Darkthrone (Fenriz seems to be the go to black metal musician for journalists) has been extremely interesting. From Mayhem, I went directly to the "Unholy Trinity" with Darththrone...big fan of TO Walk The Infernal Fields and The Hordes of Nebula. I am currently interested in Wrest or Mr Jef Whitehead and Leviathan. I know that they are not black metal, but I have also started blasting Electric Wizard lately as well. My wife of 947 years yells at me from another room, "Turn that demonic sounding bullshit down!" Haha.....the heaviest band she listens to is Def Leppard!

For me the most "metal" music I heard was three days grace, nickleback and 80s rock stations that repeated a list of the same artists nearly everyday. Until my nerdy self watched a Soul Calibur 3 TH-cams video... They played Kovenant - Mirrors paradise and Psyclon Nine - Parasite.
Then I was hooked on LOUD stuff, fast forward 10 years... it turned into Bathory, Darkthrone, Mutiilation, Satyricon. Etc.

The first black metal I ever listend to was Filosofem by burzum and that was because my dad always used to tell me about some crazy band that burned churches and shit.
So when I was like 12 I searched for this alleged band that burned churches and low and behold I found a wikipedia article about the church burnings. Listed amongst one of the perpetrators was the name Varg Vikernes and yeah you can basically see where this is going.

Fair enough with Ghost Bath, Deafheaven was one of the first bands that got me into black metal even though I wouldn't call them TRVE CVLT yaddy yadda elitist bullshit. But good music is good music, and they were one of the bands that eased me into the genre and I went from there.

Hey Wyatt. Maybe for like a future video or something you could answer this question for me, or maybe you could just reply idk. Whatever you want to do. But my question is what is the difference between Dark Ambient Black Metal and Atmospheric Black Metal?

    • @absentience2776

Dark ambient black metal has more synths. Atmospheric black metal is more pretty.

@@absentience2776 I was just wondering cause people use the two interchangeably alot of times. Especially when talking about Burzum's work.

@@greyphoenix5070 Burzum did both genres before he changed to Pagan Folk. The Prison albums are considered Dungeon Synth or Dark Ambient (depending on who you talk to) because he only had access to a cheap keyboard in Prison.
