Fun fact: While no one's Ruthlessness animatic has the Laestrygonians, they are the deep voices echoing Poseidon in the chorus, we didn't know this until one of the saga debut streams in Jorge's lyric and narration subtitles
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Anni’s Ruthlessness what really bumped up Epic’s animatic attention? (It’s what my friends and I saw across so many platforms, at least). We didn’t have the Laestryogonian descriptions back then, Gigi or Anni. Relatively recently they’ve been brought more into the official spotlight. I didn’t even know Jorge’s vision was that the ship straight up _flew away_ due to the wind bag’s power until the livestreams
It’s actually kind of funny when people draw or think he’s upset that his son is hurt. Not Gigi or Anniflama’s, though. They draw him like “You made _me_ come _all the way over here._ Come on. You know how long the commute is?? Time for you to pay with bloodshed, I guess.”
I love their animatics exactly bc of that!! If you think from the lense of Ancient Greece, Poseidon’s anger didn’t really come from a place of fatherly protectiveness, at least not entirely. Ancient Greeks were kinda obsessed with dying an honorable death. If you were murdered or died from some undeserved circumstance, you would be honored. However, being maimed and becoming disabled after being attacked was seen as a source of shame. Poseidon was pissed at Odysseus for not killing Polyphemus because now his son, on top of being a monster who was outsmarted by mortals, would have to live the rest of his life as a blind cyclops. That reflects badly on Poseidon, because it shows his children are weak and/or can be hurt without consequence.
yeah I definitely got that vibe of ‘ugh this potato of mine, loser ugly son I abhor, if I’d known I’d have to go confront some Greeks about it one day I would have killed him when he was born and saved the time fml’
@@tsutomumybeloved7411 One aspect that occurred to me on last listen-through: Odysseus also gave Polyphemus lotus, which they said "never lets go". So not only is his son now blind, but possibly dependent on eating lotus.
My favorite angry Poseidon is definitely neals cause she never has Poseidon bring himself down too a mortals level. He shows that he is truly a force of nature that they angered
To add to the fun facts when Poseidon tells him " I'm your darkest moment" He actually was repeating what Odysseus actually told the cyclops in the end of the "Remember Them" song
Just to add a bit to the Ruthlessness reaction: If you look closely at the lyrics, Poseidon wasn't saying he "wronged children" per se, it was the opposite actually... ...The whole song, Poseidon was basically saying "Why didn't you just kill my son? I wouldn't even need to be here had you just killed him just like you offed that baby earlier" after all --> Ruthlessness is MERCY upon OURSELVES. So by being merciless to others, he's showing mercy to himself and his crew. Edit: I just wanted to explain the lyrics a bit cause, this song in particular, is hard to catch the message conveyed in a first listen.
Poseidon would have been angry if Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, but he would have been able to accept that it was vengeance for the deaths of the men Polyphemus had killed. But maiming Polyphemus, leaving him alive, and then taunting him? That was an offense that could not be allowed to go unpunished.
Hello! In the musical, mortals can have a "choir" but only through other mortals (the crew for example) While the Gods can summon their own choir out of thin air.
So this is VERY nitpicky, but it doesn't have to be other mortals for a mortal's "choir" - prime example being the backing vocals during Warrior of the Mind when Ody tells Athena he knows who she is, where Athena is the source of his backing vocals (I assume because she likes his enthusiasm)
So just to be clear, when people talk about the gods having the choirs and summoning voices, there are two types of choirs. The synthetic choirs made on a keyboard are just instrumental. But if a choir or anyone not present is singing lyrics those are summoned by a non mortal. Hope this helps really loving the reaction so far.
The crew is a bit different from the usual choir, if people are present then the choir is not necessarily divine but the gods are the only ones who can summon a choir without other people being present. But the crew specifically also serve as Eurylochus' instrument.
It's worth remembering that in ancient Greece mercy was not considered a virtue. The gods demanded total victory in battle (ie destroy them utterly) and to 'spare' a defeated enemy was an insult to them, not a mercy. As such P-daddy is actually mad that Odysseus didn't kill his son, because maiming him and letting him live would have been considered MUCH worse. That and when he asks Ody to appologize he instead tries to justify (which is hubris). There is some debate whether it would have mattered but i suspect Wet Hades would have killed ONLY Ody if he begged for mercy and spared his men. By instead insulting the god by trying to justify what he did instead of begging for mercy he earned the full 'kill all your friends then you' treatment.
Actually, when we look at apology also in an ancient greek setting, this is actually the right way to do it: "The Greek philosophers Plato, Isocrates, and Aristotle described apologia as an oratory to defend positions or actions particularly in the sense of a legal defense. Socrates believed an apology to be a well-thought justification of accusations made." - Wikipedia on 'apologia' Also dude was really really sleep deprived... I dont blame him for not being able to think quickly enough on his feet after 9 days awake and then an obvious betrayal by (someone on) his crew.
Did you like anniflamma’s ruthlessness it’s my favorite cause it also leans into Poseidon god of tides creator of horses and it makes Poseidon seem more like an insurmountable threat more than just an angry force or nature check out Gigi’s too it’s good too I just prefer anni’s
Same. Love them both. They both have their moments to me, but that horse’s teeth, man. And seeing the closeup faces of the people drowning makes it so much more personal. Gigi’s is good if you watch her KYFC first because you know the wind bag’s design and Aeolus. Anni’s is good even as a stand alone. It doesn’t really matter which artist’s version you saw before it. (unless it was Gigi’s, then you’d be lost to the plot). 😂
My personal favorite is tamatama's Ruthlesness, but in Anniflamma's one I absolutely love the part with the destruction of the fleet, the frantic, desperate feeling of it, and the viewer seeing things basically from the perspective of a slowly drowning crewmember. It's chilling!
Same but my personal favorite is Neal Illustrator's Ruthlessness, the crew is moving around and doing stuff to stay alive unlike in some where they are just in the background. Also, the amount of water horses is great.
So in terms of choirs, non-diegetic choirs are associated with gods. However, diegetic choirs, like the crew, are very human. And Eurolychus’ instrument is actually the crew. Otherwise, he adapts to the situation or other people. But the crew’s voices are consistently his “instrument”. Hope that helps! :)

Alot of the songs have a modern tone in order to grasp a more modern audience. So those who usually don't like musicals can like this song and follow along easier. Plus, Jorge mentions this is a new modern retelling of the Odyssey. So makes sense to have a modern feel to the music to prove it's a new version of telling the story.
The musics are diagetic so when the crew starts singing they are really talking. While the gods can bring their own choir and are mostly synth instruments. So no they aren't taken over by the gods. Also Eurylochus "instrument" are the men so if he has a big moment, the crew will sometime sing with him or support him

So, Poseidon is one of the older Greek gods and actually went through some decent changes between our early records of him and what we got in works like the Odyssey. Back then he was actually an underworld god seemingly doing the job of Hades who we don't have proof existed yet. That connection to the underworld is likely why he first got associated with earthquakes and he was part of a group of three underworld connected gods all related to horses. The other two gods would go on to become Demeter and Persephone

The way Jorge has explained the layering of vocals among the crew and the gods differs. With the gods, it's just that they can layer their own voice over itself multiple times (consciously) while when the crew sings together as a choir it's either as Eurylochus' instrument or just as the crew itself.
When talking about the choir that comes in the start of Storm, since you have the foresight of already knowing about Posideon it makes sense to draw the connection of the choir being some foreshadowing for him. But thinking about the song as an individual, I like to think about the choir being for the storm itself, it is the antagonist of the song.

But I also kind of think that if he had followed the wind god's advice of "keeping your enemies closer", given Eurylochus that trust, even if he didn't deserve it, that it would have made Eurylochus feel responsible to keep the bag closed and honored Odysseus trust.
Also, while some people talk about how Eurylicus is the voice of reason in 'Luck Runs Out' he isn't actually using logic or reason and instead pure emotion. They had just found the one safe spot in the middle of a storm that was so bad Eurylicus did little except keep telling his captain that they were all going to die.
