    I actually find Ares' section really interesting! Athena pulls Aphrodite into her quick-thought, but because both Athena AND Ares are gods of war, they share similar abilities. Which is why Ares said "Really, Athena? These old tricks?" Ares has his own version of quick-though that induces rage instead of Athena's strategic thinking. So when Ares is introduced he's actually breaking through Athena's quick-thought and bringing them into his. That's also why you hear Athena's musical motif, but slowed down. Then after Ares insults Telemachus, she brings them back into hers.

    Another reason Aphrodite would especially be against Ody is she is the reason we have the Trojan War. Hera, Athena and Aphrodite wanted to see who was "the fairest", so Eris (goddess of chaos) gave them an apple that was inscribed to the fairest and chose Paris, prince of Troy, to choose. To add to his choice, Hera offered Power with a kingdom, Athena offered Wisdom in that he'd never lose a battle he commanded, and Aphrodite offered him Love in the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris of course chose the girl, who happened to already be married to Mendalaeus who then brought all of Greece to get her back. And simultaneously Paris pissed off the goddesses of Wisdom in battle and the goddess of Marriage so this can only go well for Paris (looks at the Horse and the Infant).
    Aphrodite loves setting people up to an unhealthy level so the fact her prince of Troy who picked her was undone by Ody's plan of the Horse, she's probably gonna be mad at him forever. Also think she's who Zeus references when Ody wants to spare the infant in the line Send him far away from home, the gods will make him know

    In the official livestream animatic, when the piano softly plays Athena's motif after Zeus strikes her, there's a flashback from twenty years prior when Odysseus and Penelope brought newborn Telemachus to meet her and she held him for the first time that makes me tear up every time I watch it. I absolutely love Luke Holt's vocals for Zeus at the end; he really makes you feel how intimidating the god king can be. Also, on an unrelated note, Aphrodite being mad about Odysseus being gone when his mom died is kind of rich given that she's the entire reason the Trojan War even happened lol

    Ares was definitely playing with Athena's mind. As we've seen, Athena has the power to entire peoples (and gods) minds and affect how they view time for the purposes of strategy and planning. It's kind of like her own domain. Ares, being her brother (half-brother technically) would have a similar ability though more geared towards the brutality of war as opposed to the strategy that Athena embodies.

    • @gabby.watson
      @gabby.watson 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Jorge confirmed that they have the same “god power”, but Ares is the like dark version. So they can both control time inside of people’s heads, but Ares is more pushing the “kill them, kill them aspect” more than the “strategize and do this that’ll help you get the lead” aspect

    @brittanybroquadio4320 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

    Funny that you say that you believe gods don't have emotions, because they DO! Very strong ones in fact;
    - Athena is one of the few gods who is more monotone than anything. So for her breaking that because she FEELS this anguish for her friend is telling the other gods, her siblings essentially who know her best that she truly cares about this mortal.
    - Ares, Aphrodite and Apollo were all sided with Troy in the Trojan war, but Apollo's strife wasn't with Odysseus, but rather with Achilles and Agamemnon. Apollo during the entirety of the Trojan war, as Troy's patron god, was the embodiment of rage, rage that fueled Ares and Aphrodite, both war gods (Aphrodite in her own right). Funny enough, Zeus basically benched Ares and Aphrodite from the war, while Artemis was essentially beaten up by Hera, leaving Apollo to himself. With his siblings essentially out of the running, there was this rage that no god or human can quell until Achilles was dead.
    - Aphrodite is a war god in her own right because love is such a bloody thing sometimes. But here, she's catering to the fact that Anticlea (Odysseus's mother) died without knowing if her son was even alive. She would've very much seen him had he been able to make it home, but of course circumstances of story telling. Athena finds it harder to confront Aphrodite because they are polar opposites; Athena is a virgin goddess who finds no meaning in love and Aphrodite is a very passionate goddess whose whole thing IS love. It wasn't until Athena's passion showed in her fight with Ares that Aphrodite gave her approval.
    - Ares and Athena are both war gods. Athena is Zeus's favorite child while Ares is his least favorite. While Athena is embodiment of war strategy, using time as a tool to plan out certain events, Ares is the embodiment of the brutality of war. He is the bloodshed. He is the one that charges head on. I believe Jorge alluded that Ares has his own kind of 'Quick Thought' ability that he gives to very fed up soldiers when they want nothing more than to shed the blood of their enemies. But they are two sides of the same coin; war.
    - Gonna go back to Apollo for this; his problem never lied with Odysseus. In fact, Apollo saw Odysseus as the only redeemable Aechean in the entire war because of his use of wit. The argument of the sirens is a little silly to me because Apollo could've easily gone for the jugular and point out that Odysseus killed Astyanax, the infant son of Apollo's chosen champion, Hector. Losing Hector, Troilus (argued to be his son), and Astyanax was such a gut punch to Apollo that he very well could've chosen THAT argument, had he been one to hold a grudge (cough cough Poseidon). But Apollo can sometimes be very forgiving and understood that it was Zeus's call on the infant and not Odysseus's decision. So he chose not to hold a grudge on that (can't say the same for Zephyrus. Apollo is still very upset about Hyacinthus's death)

    With Hephaestus, you mentioned the metal strikes. Those are tubular bells, or called simply chimes. I loved playing them when I filled in the percussion section with my concert band! At first, they are played with the sustain pedal upright, which dampens the strikes. Usually, they are played with the pedal pressed down, allowing them to ring out like church bells (in fact, they are sometimes used in churches that can't get massive bells. We can hear those ringing tones when Athena sings. I absolutely loved the metal sound and the clever use of dampened the strikes for the god of blacksmiths and letting them ring for out champion.

    Someone also said in a comment elsewhere an Ares idea that I liked. Where Athena is a warrior of the mind, Ares would be a warrior of the heart. His domain was less about strategy and more about fighting your hardest because you mean it. With that said, Telemachus would be a model citizen in Ares eyes. He fights even though he has no chance to win. The fights for the honor of his family. He fights to protect his mother. These are all ideals that Ares exemplifies, which means that him dispraging Telemachus isn't a personal attack, he's doing what brothers do best and pissing his sister off, but he is doing it to force her into his domain, fighting with your heart, not fighting with your mind

    A good way to think of Athena vs Ares when it comes to being god/goddess of war, is Athena is more the goddess of STRATEGIC war, while Ares can be thought of as more tactical. He's for the guy out on the battlefield slashing, while Athena would be moreso the general commanding all the troops where to go. (Hence why he disliked the Trojan horse so much, he thinks it's cowardly even though it was a brilliant strategic move). I find it very cool that as Athena fights against each God (in terms of the arguments) by playing towards their egos and wants. But as she gets closer and closer to free Ody she slowly loses that and is more emotional in her arguments. Probably leading to her mistake of DEMANDING that Zeus sets Ody free at the end there. Which a more clear headed Athena would have never made that mistake. But then she remembers how to get through to Zeus and that is to just drop the pride and beg.
    Feels like her time with Telemachus has her acting more human, which almost cost her here.

    11:56 Ares is the God of War, mainly because he represents the traditional aspect of war: Blood and Glory. Little known fact, (and this will be hilarious)
    Ares is almost always wrongly depicted in modern media;
    According to the ancient poems and mythology, Ares is a handsome YOUNG god with a pristine face, even with scars around his body.
    He is also known to be quick to retreat to Zeus whenever he loses or is starting to lose a battle. (So there's hypocrisy in his argument about Scylla)

    Depending on which myth you read: Athena was born by parthenogenesis and emerges from Zeus’s forehead or she is the daughter of Zeus and Metis and because of a prophesy that his first born would steal his throne so he Swallows Metis but Athena is still born and emerges from Zeus’ head in full armour.

    What's interesting is that in the Odyssey, this is where the story actually begins, with the gods discussing the fates of those returning home from the Trojan War and Athena uses it as an opportunity to plead with Zeus on Odysseus' behalf. It amuses me because it makes me think about someone listening to God Games as their first exposure to EPIC and going "Wait, what's going on?" 😆

      also its super big that she referred to Telemachus as her friend in this story. As she doesn't have many other people she is close with, ala vow of Virginity which I think is carried on in this story in that she only ever reveals herself to her champion. That is, before the loss of her champion affected her of course.

    Apollo: god of light, music (he was made a sun god in rome) likes sirens for their singing.
    Hephaestus: god of fire and craftsmanship (trust isn't given it's forged as he sings) so mad that he broke that trust
    Aphrodite: goddess of passion s*x and desire (love was spilt into different things which all had gods) mad he let someone die of a broken heart
    Ares: God of war, power and brutality (the reason he's able to shatter Athena's power is because he's the opposite to her more thoughtful warfare, he and Aphrodite are lovers thus why they fight together as all is fair between love and war) Mad he didn't fight or kill the monsters
    Hera: goddess of family, childbirth, heroes and marriage (that's why she's moved by that argument, although he does with Circe in the Odyssey but we'll leave that here)
    Zues: god of storms, hospitality and oaths, (was told by the fates if he had a son by Athena's mother Metis, that said son would be more powerful and overthrow him, so he tricked her to transform into a fly and then ate her, 9 months later Athena spawned from his head)

    aphrodite is married to hephaestus, but she and ares are lovers. it makes sense he would interject on her behalf. but if you pay attention, athena uses her technique "quick thought" on aphrodite, which leads ares to use it on her, and then her to use it on ares after that. the clock in the back of the music gets slower and slower each time, which is really cool.

    So something’s I think you should know in this song that makes it so much heartbreaking and cool is:
    - Ares and Athena are brothers, but often fight each other or disagree in their ways to deals with some situations that require fighting. As you know, Ares is more of the blood war, aggressive and destructive. Athena is more of strategic war and try to not use the force unless is really needed.
    Adding to this, Ares was in the side of the Trojans while Athena with the Greeks during the Trojan War, so pretty much Ares argument/verse in this song is really just bringing how “coward” he thinks Odysseus is (and hating in general). That’s why also in this animatic is so moving how Neal shows their relationship more “nicer”, even in the part when Zeus attacks Athena with a thunder, he is the one asking: “is she dead?”.
    - Second, bringing back the Trojan War, there were many gods involved. Not only Ares, but also Aphrodite, Apollo, Hera, etc. So maybe it makes sense that they bring this gods to try to convince them for Odysseus release. (In this EPIC version, in the original Odyssey it’s quite of more simple xD)
    - Ares and Aphrodite are lovers, so that’s why like their verse and visually are so next to each other. In Neal’s version, I love how she completes Ares sword is such a nice detail!
    *Now Musically*.
    - In the last minute where the piano starts playing, in the livestream, we got a flashback of 20 years before, where Odysseus with Penelope show her baby Telemachus.
    So that's why the melody first goes with warrior of the mind motif:
    First with Athena verse: "Maybe one day they’ll follow me and we’ll make a greater tomorrow, then they’ll see… "
    Then Odysseus/Athena verse: "I know we’ll change the world cause we will be…"
    And then you can hear Legendary motif: "We will be Legendary".
    The flashbacks ends and after that we see how Athena is “fighting” or just going forward to Zeus with Warrior of the mind orchestra, cause she’s not only fighting for Ody, also for Telemachus, for her friends ❤
    Sorry if this was a lot, but I just love how Jorge just displays a lot of music layers and all of them are sort of storytelling

    13:46 not only could that be taken as a dig at Zeus being famously unfaithful to Hera in, well, ALL of Greek mythology, it also is very likely a reference to what she is the goddess of!
    Hera is the goddess of family, childbirth, women, and *marriage*. So the fact that Athena told her in the 20 YEARS that Odysseus had been parted from Penelope, he'd stayed faithful? Would be a fairly good argument for the goddess who oversaw marriages!

    I like Athena but in my honest opinion her come backs fall short, like Ody being betrayed it was Eury as far as we know he's the only one to open the wind bag, and when the crew stabbed ody they only did it after he sacrificed six men, for all he knew he could of talked about it to his crew but he didn't trust them enough to think there would be a few who would sacrifice to help the rest. also, with Aphrodite she basically says womp womp to the broken heart part lol. The only part I can agree with after rewatching again and again is her come back to Apollo, and Ares, other than the Scylla part oh and Heras lol but that's self explanatory.

    Fun facts: just like Ares and Athena, both representing a side of war, Aphrodite is also considered a goddess of war and had cults worship her in Sparta, Thebes, and Cyprus! That’s why she proves herself to be difficult to convince and why she has more lines than one would expect, unlike Apollo and Hephaestus. She and Ares both know about war at a deeper level that Athena also gets which makes it harder for her to quickly get them to appeal for Odysseus’s release.
    Another one is that in the livestream when the Wisdom Saga came out is that instead of fighting Zeus, we see a memory of Athan where Odysseus and Penelope go to her and present Telemachus to Athena. That’s why the melody of Warrior of the Mind changes for a moment into Legendary; that was the moment Athena saw and held Telemachus!
