Yeah this follows the Odyssey so that's why the Trojan War is at the very beginning. This is the passion project of a guy named Jorge Rivera-Herrans who is also voicing Odysseus. He is still actively producing and recording the concept album in chunks called sagas, of which 7 of a planned 9 have been released so far (30 out of 40 planned songs). After a bad experience early on with a production company he has been producing independently thru his own LLC (Winion Entertainment). On that note, if you stream the music make sure for the first two sagas (Troy and Cyclops Sagas) you only listen to the newly recorded versions as the original versions of those songs only benefit the shady production company and none of the profits go to the creators. All subsequent sagas only have one version which fully belongs to Jorge. There are so many good fanmade animatics out there. It's such a great feeling to experience this for the first time.
and yes, they will get into the killing all the suiters, but I'm not sure if he gets into the hanging of the maids, because its a very minorthing in mythologie and its worth to note that the greeks loved Odysseus while the romans hated him, and epic is judging him for what he does later(he is still a victum of his circumstances)
One thing to note is that not every animatic is canon. Many are close, but some artistic liberties are taken, since we don’t know Jay’s full vision. For some things, Jay has commissioned artists to draw and animate scenes, and then put them on his various socials. There’s a very cool drawing for The Horse and The Infant, actually. When Athena pulls him away it’s called “Quick Thought”. They can have conversations for however long they want, when only a second has passed in the present. The clock ticking, heartbeat audio indicate a Quick Thought. Lots to unpack, and it’s also a lot of fun : )
One thing you might find interesting is that each character in Epic gets their own instrument. The guitar you commented on is Odyssey's instrument, and it is acoustic or electric depending on his mood. Also, the creator is the one who is singing Odysseus. Lastly, the musical isn't fully released, there's 2 more sagas totalling 10 songs to come.
If you haven't noticed it yet, the animators based their art to the voice actors which is cool they looks similar to the real person singing the songs.
So interesting rule, any background voices in EPIC must be diegetic, so long as the character is a regular mortal, (such as Odysseus) where as gods, and things that can be viewed as more than mortal can summon their own background.
This WAS the rule, but I think that's now changed because Jorge didn't like it (hence why the Olympians are Zeus' background vocals in Horse and the Infant. And Athena sings by herself until Odysseus joins, Aelous' are the winions, Poseidon's are the Laestragonians, Hermes has Hermes singing for him, Circe is by herself, and when Zeus shows up again, he sings by himself
I'm glad you are reacting saga by saga and not song by song cuz honestly lots of songs in the musical are connected like directly so this is really the best way to do so
This is definitely my one of my favorite portrayals of Odysseus, but like you said there are so many variations you can take on these characters depending on whose lens you look through. Odyssey is such a great story medium because of all the ways you can shift a lot of the characters being more heroic/villainous depending on what the authors goal of the retelling is trying to achieve
and thats just how a greek mythology was; there was no definitive version of anything so the stories and characters would change from storyteller to storyteller
Hi, I love your reaction! I see you're talking about the twelve maids he hanged. While it's undoubtedly a horrific act, it's important to remember that those were different times, and those maids betrayed Penelope by siding with the suitors and even having relations with them. Throughout history, there have been far more gruesome punishments-like boiling people alive. Just something to consider. Cheers!
Thanks for pointing this out, a lot of people I feel overly demonize Odysseus. Not to say he’s innocent, but he was intended to be a sympathetic character so it always struck me as weird some folks paint him in the most negative light possible
I'm probably not the first person to explain, but JUST IN CASE I AM! Jorge Rivera-Herrans is working on this as a series of concept albums for *possibly* a stage play. He's made comments about what other forms this could eventually take like an animated film or a circus performance. But the general audience assumption is stage play, hopefully broadway. He's been working on this for about four years now, slowly releasing snippets of his work in progress through TikTok videos, which is also how he got a good portion of his cast: TikTok auditions! On Christmas of 2022, he released the first saga, The Troy Saga, for everyone's listening and proceeded to put out the Cyclops Saga not long after, but due to some disputes with the record label, there was a long break between that and the Ocean Saga, which released on Christmas of 2023. Since then, we've gotten a new saga roughly every two months (February, April, July, August) and we're just two sagas (and ten songs) away from the finale. Hope that answers your questions.
Hello! Subbed, welcome to EPIC 😁💖 There are deviations from the original Odyssey, but (almost) every deviation is chosen for a reason, and it's very internally consistent
Sometimes the reason is "Whooops, not that kind of floating?" or "Whooops, I miscounted the years", but Jorge took responsibility and owned those deviations with style. XD
Holy cow wait, Gigi redid her animatic for Just a Man to add that hand letting go for the remastered audio? When did she do *that?* Also by redid I don't mean she redid the whole thing just to add some frames at the end, I more meant uploading this newer version of the video.
I noticed the added hand! And was that the remastered audio? I was literally thinking during it I hope the animatic OG's re-upload with the classic animatics with the new audios.
@oops3828 Yep, it's the remastered one. It's harder to tell for some songs, but in this one Ody's scream when he gets 'hit' by the vision sounds more natural. Zeus also has the other Olympians backing him when he says the second "I don't think you're ready" and the biggest tell is the part where the original says "you can say goodbye to Penelope, you can say goodbye to Telemachus" instead just repeats the Penelope line twice in the remaster. Also the other Olympians are backing Zeus during the whole "he will burn your house and throne/I'll raise him as my own" segment.
Be happy you only discovered it now that there are 7 out of 9 sagas and you don't have to wait months wanting more. Most animatics outside of a few are fan made and are not technically cannon however are incredible nonetheless. The story is also "loosely" based on the odyssey. There are parts that are changed or entirely created for the telling of this musical.
Oh boy can't wait to see you react to the next saga. Also, the first animatic was two songs put together. "Just A Man" basically discusses the theme of the musical.
I’m so excited to see you reacted to the rest. I think you’ll be happy with how they handle Poseidon and the story getting ‘darker’. Also as a bass player I really want to see how she’ll react to Polyphemus
I love the musical analysis / commentary parts, please keep it coming! Also people have already mentioned the character instruments but I haven't seen anyone mention why: Peter and the Wolf! (You're an upright bass player, I'm *guessing* that you know the Peter and the Wolf music, but it's a guess that could be completely inaccurate, heh.) Jorge loved how Peter and the Wolf told a story by having an instrument for each character, and incorporated that concept into EPIC.
You are the best kind of reactor! Even more for like musicals, because i really love that you take the time to do commentary and all but pausing the vids, a lot of times reactors miss little details or even huge stuff because they talk over the music or dialogues, so i think it's great that you give yourself time to pause, comment whatever you want and then even go back a few seconds to really absorb the part you paused or as a precaution, so yeah, keep at it! Also, yes, Penelope is SO the woman! It's gonna be interesting to see more of your reactions to EPIC, also claps for the one who arranged the playlist because the last two as you saw, come as a set, the apple thing doesnt makes much sense if you watch other animatics for either of the songs and even The Horse and The Infant + Just a Man in one video is better because in this version, as declared by Jorge, the creator of Epic, the baby does get dropped so... yeah. Someone already wrote a comment about it but, it really is interesting how each character has their own instrument in the songs, i really love that Athena's instrument is the piano.
Fun fact each character is actually represented by a musical instrument. Odysseus is a guitar and I think athena is a piano and Penelope I believe is the viola. How Jorge brings all these instruments together and make this come together is amazing.
So, its really cool. I didn't know until recently that one of the reason each song has its own flavor is that each character has assigned instruments. So when songs feature specific characters they take on the tone and feel from those instruments.
Eeeeeeeee I love watching people's reactions when they know nothing about this experience. It's always a treat watching how everything hits for the very first time, even when you know the story behind the musical itself. :) I hope to see you react to the rest! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Haven't gotten very far into the video yet, but I love that you said you would pause if you had something to say to avoid talking over the music. I HATE it when people just talk over it, miss half the verse and then don't know what's going on. Did you notice that the branches of the tree form a skull? It's also growing larger and branching out while Ody is singing about how things can snowball. I also saw "when does the man become the monster?" As a tie in to the rest of the musical "would I be a monster for letting this child live if they grow to kill everyone I love?" Along with Zeus' line about "the blood on your hands is something you won't lose, all you can choose is whose" could be the kid or his loved ones
You're so expressive it makes me feel how i felt when i first listened Edit: I cared I played violin for 10 years and one of the only thing I knew on bass was "stand by me" but I always love a dissection of the music
Omg you are the first reactor who I heard mention Polites reminds them of Miguel because same! Looking forward to more reactions, you are gonna love it
It's really enjoyable to hear what you thought about the saga and some of your ideas for how the remaining sagas will go. Thank you for sharing and I'm glad you seem to be enjoying Epic!
I hope you react to more. There is nine sagas in total and only seven are out as of right now. I hope you continue this journey! Welcome to the Epic Community!
Omg, I found your reactions with vox machina and now you're doing my other obsession? 🙃 I am so excited! One thing to note is that every character has their own instrument ie. Odysseus - guitar, Athena - piano, Polities - marimba, and Eurylochus - the voice of the crew. And only gods can summon a choir, any other background vocals of human characters have to be diagetic
Love your reaction! Hope to see more Epic from you soon. I’ll be adding facts and comments as I watch the video. :) - Yes, they made Odysseus cute because the animatic designs are based on the people voicing the characters, and Odysseus’ singer is very cute. He’s also the writer, composer, and director of the whole thing and he’s only 26 years old. -Never noticed the butterflies before, but these animatics are not quite official, and done by several different artists. You’ll see different interpretations and different running themes the more of them you watch! - on “switching up the style of the song… and helps with each character, giving an insight on who they are” that’s something the creator is amazing at. Each character has their own instrument, each idea has its own motif. It only gets better and better as you go deeper, and I can’t wait for you to experience it all. - on Athena: “She has a gorgeous design” : another commenter pointed out, she looks like you lol. - “Why can’t I buy tickets to Epic the Musical onstage?” We have been asking that question for so long lol. Long story short, it isn’t done cooking yet. Only 75% of the songs have been released - Jorge (the creator) is working on it. There was a hiccup with the production company that helped make the first two sagas. Everything is written, casted, and possibly recorded, but it’s still being mixed and cleaned up. Also, Jorge has said that he’s not sure it would work on a traditional Broadway stage with how big he wants certain scenes to be, but has said that it would be something more akin to a big act with more room like Cirque du Soleil. Loved starting this journey with you! Your commentary is lovely.
Welcome to the journey! This is an evolving musical project with 6 out of 8 sagas currently released. The 5th saga premiered on July 4th, and the 6th saga was just released this month. I'm not sure if there are any animatics for the 6th saga yet, but we're eagerly awaiting the final two chapters. The mastermind behind this musical is Jorge Rivera-Herrans (pronounced in Spanish), who also voices Odysseus. Jorge shares parts of the songs on TikTok, where talented animators in the fan community create animatics based on the clips. When a new saga is released, Jorge often includes some of these fan-made animatics in his live streams. After the release, more fan animatics are made, typically following the action he outlines in his TikToks. Jorge began writing this musical in 2019, and it has since grown into a highly anticipated project. Enjoy the experience! And if you're on the playlist I think you are, you'll notice the Cyclops looks different from the typical portrayal in the first two songs of the Cyclops saga, before transitioning to a more traditional design later on.
I love watching people who already know the odyssey react to this musical! It’s not necessary but I felt like having that context of having read it (even tho it was years ago for me) really enriched my listening experience :D excited for u to react to the rest!
Yeah so you mentioned hearing an electric guitar. Every main character in this has their own instrument so you can hear in the composition who's there even if they're unseen or not singing. Odysseus' is the guitar, which kind of guitar rly depends on the tone of the song. Athena's is the piano. Eurylochus' is the ship's crew. Also you mentioned choirs; only gods can summon backing vocals that are non-diegetic versus mortals require there to be actual ppl there to sing the parts e.g. on the ship there's lots of backing singers bc there's the whole ship's crew whereas there's nothing in Just A Man except Odysseus.
Nice to meet you dude. Im obsessed with Epic. Thanks for this fun reaction. I really hope you do all of them. You can never go wrong with Mircsy or Gigi animatics. Unless theyre old ones with incomplete songs.
wait til you get to the underworld, thunder, and wisdom saga. Every saga is gonna hurt. Pay attention to the instruments that play with each character. Each character has a specific instrument and they all have specific tunes/melodies that reprise as the narrative continues. Polities song open arms for example appears because he impacts Odysseus a little more here than he does in the original story :)
Welcome to the party, youve joined at the pefect time. And yes, every single song is going to delight you. Cant wait to see your reactions as you get deeper into it.👏.
Epic is more of a concept album, so it's not really on stage. It's actually still in development at the moment I'm writting this comment, as the last two sagas are still not officially out as of yet. If you want to learn more about the develpment of this musical I recoment Barbienronpa's video on the musical, but take into consideration she talks about it up until the underworld saga, so there are MAYOR spoilers...which is why I recoment watching it after you cathed up with the content. On a different note, the Epic community is actually very fun from what I've expirienced, so you'll have a blast on it, specially with the animatics!
I really love Wolfy's animatics, they were my introduction to epic. It makes me so sad ppl don't react to them as much anymore. Fortunately her "remember them" is still the go to animatic
@@Mr_Freds_Studioyea i know, i think i watched every single react to epic haha, i am just sad that gigi’s horse and the infant and just a man are watched way more than wolfy’s and i prefer wolfy’s
This is the first time watching you and i rlly like your music insight together with ur reaction, hope you also dip a bit more about instruments and all
Hey! I suggest you watch Mircsy's animatics for the first two songs of the next saga. They're extremely detailed and it feels like you can tell what Odysseus is thinking based on his facial expressions!
22:49 In fact....at that time throwing an apple at someone was equivalent to a marriage proposal or declaration and the video animator took the small trouble to represent it at the end with Polites throwing an apple at Odysseus.....just say, and welcome to the epic!! ONE OF US!! ONE OF US!! 🎉
I don't know if they will get into the hanged women because Jorge has kind of given Odysseus more modern morality. Or rather he has kind of mixed modern morals with Greek morals to make Odysseus more relatable.
Fun fact! The Greeks believed that butterflies were souls being taken to the Underworld so his reaction was accurate
Oh my god that's amazing

Only 75% of the songs have been released - Jorge (the creator) is working on it. There was a hiccup with the production company that helped make the first two sagas. Everything is written, casted, and possibly recorded, but it’s still being mixed and cleaned up. Also, Jorge has said that he’s not sure it would work on a traditional Broadway stage with how big he wants certain scenes to be, but has said that it would be something more akin to a big act with more room like Cirque du Soleil.
Loved starting this journey with you! Your commentary is lovely.
"a musical panic attack" at the end of the horse and the infant is such a brilliant way to put that.
Kyra: I'm really looking forward to the Cyclops Saga.
The Audience: I don't think you're ready...
You've fallen down a rabbit hole with this. There's so much you will enjoy about this. And you WILL feel things.
I love watching people who already know the odyssey react to this musical! It’s not necessary but I felt like having that context of having read it (even tho it was years ago for me) really enriched my listening experience :D excited for u to react to the rest!
I love this song but every time I hear it, I want to tell him to leave my brothers alone.
I read your comment at the same time that he sang 😂😂😂
“Warrior of the Mind” really got my heart pumping. 🥰
"He's so cute"
ME: [If you know meme*]
*I don't mind posting this seeing she already has a reaction posted for the next saga
Omg I LOVE how you react to EPIC! I'm so excited to watch all the sagas with you!
I love so much to watch people react to Epic for the first time ❤
To be fair, butterflies are a symbol of death and the underworld in greek mythology
Irl they have been known to drink blood
... Wait they are? Oh my god. Suddenly the one shot idea I've been playing with is getting even more interesting -
Nice to meet you dude. Im obsessed with Epic. Thanks for this fun reaction. I really hope you do all of them. You can never go wrong with Mircsy or Gigi animatics. Unless theyre old ones with incomplete songs.
Another Epic Addict has joined the club. Can't wait to binge another react series to this saga.
The Legend of Vox Machina and now Epic the musical yes!
wait til you get to the underworld, thunder, and wisdom saga. Every saga is gonna hurt. Pay attention to the instruments that play with each character. Each character has a specific instrument and they all have specific tunes/melodies that reprise as the narrative continues. Polities song open arms for example appears because he impacts Odysseus a little more here than he does in the original story :)
Fun fact each character had their own instrument like athena with the piano
WE GOT ANOTHER GUYS! Super excited to see your journey with Epic! ❤
Welcome to the party, youve joined at the pefect time. And yes, every single song is going to delight you. Cant wait to see your reactions as you get deeper into it.👏.
Hell yes, I've been on an epic reaction binge, so this came at a perfect time. You just gained a subscriber ❤
Her facial expressions and nodding remind me of the “Square Peg Girl”
The lotus eaters being portrayed as basically Moogles will always be funny lol
... Oh you thought _Horse and the Infant_ was the musical panic attack - boy you are not ready for Love in Paradise.
This version of Odysseus is not based on other works except Homer's The Odyssey.
i love how genuinely interested you are and would love more reactions from you! :D
First video of yours I’ve seen, and you’re so very precious ❤
welcome to the epic fam, i think you won't be disappointed with the emotional damage xD
OMG I'm so excited to see your take on this. :3
Most animators have based their character designs on the real life actors. That's why some may look very modern compared to ancient greece xD
Oop, looks like weve got ourselves a new lotus eater! Welcome the community
Thanks for reacting!! please keep doing it :D
I subscribed to this the moment you said penelope is queen. She is witty, caring and firm.
Fellow Winions, we have another one!
Honestly I prefer WolfyTheWitch's Warriors of the Mind animatic
I really love Wolfy's animatics, they were my introduction to epic. It makes me so sad ppl don't react to them as much anymore. Fortunately her "remember them" is still the go to animatic
@@danielmunhoz9872 Matthew mckenna did but he didn't do the songs in order
@@Mr_Freds_Studioyea i know, i think i watched every single react to epic haha, i am just sad that gigi’s horse and the infant and just a man are watched way more than wolfy’s and i prefer wolfy’s
This is the first time watching you and i rlly like your music insight together with ur reaction, hope you also dip a bit more about instruments and all
Welcome to the winion army my friend
"You sail with 600 men and ya know, gay stuff is gonna happen" This is the greatest quote I've heard.
Hey! I suggest you watch Mircsy's animatics for the first two songs of the next saga. They're extremely detailed and it feels like you can tell what Odysseus is thinking based on his facial expressions!
YYYYYEEEEAAAAAAAH ANOTHER EPIC THE MUSICAL REACTION WUH!!!!
22:49
In fact....at that time throwing an apple at someone was equivalent to a marriage proposal or declaration and the video animator took the small trouble to represent it at the end with Polites throwing an apple at Odysseus.....just say, and welcome to the epic!! ONE OF US!! ONE OF US!! 🎉
Very excited to see when you release the next saga ^u^
WE GOT ANOTHER ONE WINIONS 🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️ 🔥 🔥 🔥
I think half the reason I watch reactions for Epic is that moment when the TH-camr realizes how much trouble the word "Epic" is going to cause them.
Winions ! We've caught another !!!
I don't know if they will get into the hanged women because Jorge has kind of given Odysseus more modern morality. Or rather he has kind of mixed modern morals with Greek morals to make Odysseus more relatable.
Omg first helluva boss now epic?! Yayyy😍😍😍😍😍
Cannot wait til you see the cyclops saga!!
I fuck with the intro ngl i fucking hate when mfs take 30 minutes to get to the actual video
one of us!!
Great reaction
Great Video !
We got another one! Welcome to the crew!!
