    I realy liked this video. I live in Melbourne now “80 yrs old”. I spent a lot of time in Sydney. Worked at Manly hospital , loved Circular Que. and Sydney. Both my grandparents came to Australia before the First World War.. from Castile and Staffordshire. Don’t believe what your mate said about the poisonous bugs, spiders and sea creatures etc………we just ignore them. Come back again sometime.

    When Lt Cook made his first landfall in Australia in 1770, be landed at a large bay south of current day Sydney, which he called Stingray Harbour, (now called Botany Bay) when he left he had fair winds as he sailed north up the coast, well off shore, and was keen to continue on so he made a note as he passed the entrance to Sydney Harbour that there might be a suitable anchorage in there!
    Eighteen years later in 1788 the first fleet arrived with Gov Phillip in command, he didn't like Botany Bay, so he headed north in a small boat to investigate the 'anchorage' that Cook had seen, and as he entered through the headlands and turned south what a sight he saw! He commented that you could anchor a thousand ships of the line here with room to spare, and as they say the rest is history.

      I grew up in Sydney and I try not to be biased. I've been to a lot of great harbour cities including Venice, and it's a tough one but I think Sydney's better, although I caught a beautiful teak boat from the mainland to Venice driven by a lunatic Italian and it was pretty awesome driving up to St Mark's. I also flew around the Statue of Liberty in New York in a helicopter pre 9/11 which was pretty amazing.@@peterbreis5407

    Andrew is a lovely man! Here in NSW, if you are a permanent resident and 60 or over, you can get a Seniors Card which lets you travel on the entire Sydney public transport system, including light rail and ferries, hopping on and off as much as you want, for $2.50 for the whole day. You can go way outside the city limits by train for the same fare - like as far as Orange which is 3-4hrs by car. One of the few bargains for old farts in a pretty expensive city! Our public transport really is something to be proud of - safe, clean, efficient, comfortable, extensive.

    Fort Denison is a Martello Tower and is the only complete example in the world. It was built between 1841 & 1857 to defend against potential invasions from France and other enemies. When completed twelve 32 pounder (three in the tower), two 10 inch shell guns, one 8 inch shell gun and one 12 pounder carronade were installed. Other guns were installed around the harbour up to the heads to welcome adversaries. The fort is built on a rocky outcrop they called Pinchgut Island which is where they put their difficult convicts for a week or so on bread and water to keep them in line.

    Fort Denison was not a prison. The island on which it was built was used for punishment before the Fort was built. A bit of a fun fact that I heard about Fort Denison was that the cannons were never fired, but if they had been the martello tower would have been destroyed! Something about the way it was constructed. The fort was built to protect the colony from an invasion from the sea.

    • @brettevill9055
      @brettevill9055 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yep. The island is called "Pinchgut", and once, in 1788, before Sydney had a gaol, a convict was banished there for a week on bread and water. A gallows and gibbet were built on Pinchgut in 1796, for executions. Mostly, it was used as a quarry.
      Fort Denison was begun in the 1840s after some American ships sailed into Sydney Harbour and demonstrated that there were no effective defences, and was finished in 1855 as a defence against the Russians (because of the Crimean War!).

    The sandstone building Fort Denison was built to repel the Russians back in the day in the 1800’s but before that it was just an island that the colony used to put prisoners on and it was referred to as “pinchgut” presumably because you didn’t get fed very well as a prisoner sent there.

    • @HenriHattar
      @HenriHattar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@chriscarrick1513 Pichgut WAS the nickname, Fort Dennison the real name, never meant to house prisoners. Before the construction of the Fort i was already named Pinchbut Island and prisoners who commited more serious crimes and re offenders were often marooned there with just the basics, bread and water, which "inched" their gut. The concept of being hanged by the stomach is not true and I defy you ro provide credible reference points. The hanging of Francis Morgan in 1796 when the gibbet was built there gave more to the meaning of pinchgut than myth as when they hung him they left his body strung up for 4 years. As to Palm Beach being no where near Manly, it aint that far and I think what they meant is that is ON THE PENINSULA. It is amazing how you can draw such cantakerous accounts .

    Do the ferry trip at night or dusk when the city lights up and bats fly over from the Botanical Gardens.
    It's not just the Manly ferry there are ferries everywhere, even far west to Parramatta over 20km away called The River Cat.
    Sydney has many harbours. The main one is Sydney Harbour but there is also Middle Harbour, Botany Bay, Port Hacking, Pittwater, Brisbane Waters and Broken Bay. Middle Harbour and Botany Bay are the only ones that don't have ferries. There are also islands in most of the harbours. The ferries go to several in Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and Broken Bay.

    • @daskrispysquivvel3120
      @daskrispysquivvel3120 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah the fort never was but the small island its built on was used in the early days of the colonies to put troublesome convicts on. It was nicknamed "Pinchgut" by the convicts due to the poor food which was rowed across once a day by guards. SOme convicts were also gibbetted there.
      One particular one hung in chains for four years from 1796. At his execution when asked for any last words he said to the hangman that the only thing worth mentioning was the superb view of the harbour from his high elevation, and that he was sure there were no waters the world over to compare with it for beauty...

    • @troy906
      @troy906 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was called pinchgut before the fort was built, it was a prison for the most incorrigible prisoners, they called it pinchgut because they weren’t fed very often

    On shark nets, if you knew how deep they go, you wouldn't be feeling as safe. One of the reasons that folk dislike them is that, they kill wildlife and they're not very effective in keeping sharks away. They don't reach to the sea bed by any stretch, so Sharks can easily swim around or under them. (how safe are you feeling now?)

I’m rather similar to this naturalised Australian man. My personal idiosyncrasies are a complete lack of interest in sport or alcohol. However, my terrific dad once bowled out Don Bradman and Bert Oldfield (record held by Cricket Australia) and played in the Prime Minister’s XI. He also played football for Victoria and challenged Horace Lindrum when he was the world snooker champion. The rest of my family are mad about most sports. One thing that I suspect you’re not aware of is that it’s mainly Australian men who express egocentric views on what constitutes being an Australian. So many guys will make comments implying that their personal view is held by the majority here. You use the word “we” with a hint of Victorian royalty.🤴
      I’m proud of lots of other good qualities in which Australians tend to excel. Having lived in four other countries and conversed in one Asian language and two from Europe, I represent just one of the other facets that can describe or answer the question posed above “Is there a true Aussie”?
