Tom is the best thing to happen to SUSD since standardized reference pears.
He brings out the best in all the others
Tom is a treasure. His humor and energy are fantastic and balanced nicely with Quinns more serious side. I also love that Tom always seems to be on the floor next to the table rather than sitting in a chair. It's subtle, but very cozy and welcoming for the reviews

This really reminds me of the video game Evolve! That game had a really interesting concept, so i can see a board game version taking advantage of the premise
Yeah, I had the same thought! But unlike Evolve, this game will probably still be playable more than 3 years on from launch. lmao

Great review and very glad I backed this. The acrylic standees don't have the flimsiness problem and look beautiful. Would recommend picking those up when the expansion come to KS. BTW I'm fairly sure it's 'grudge' not 'hatred' :)

The fact that Beast has to reveal itself multiple times in the course of the game really sold this on me. I’ve had such horribly boring experiences with e.g. The Fury of Dracula that can happen when the hunters just can’t seem to find the trail early enough.

Funny, I was rewatching Quinns preview yesterday and searched everywhere for a review, and here it is, from SUSD even. Shame it's not as good in 2 since that's my player count, I love how it looks and the lack of plastic BS that's so common on KS. Thanks for great review.
I would have liked to have had a summary or final verdict instead of me having to watch the complete video and also jump marks so I can skip the lengthy explanation and ramblings. Missed opportunity.

I LOVE this game. Played it 3 times so far and am excited every time I can get it tabled.
And what about the balance between the hunters and the beast? I've heard some complaints about that, but nothing was mentioned in the video.
How difficult would it be to teach? Also not something explicitly talked about in the video. I'd hate to be playing as the beast having to clarify rules, ect
@@brettstoddard7947 Not very difficult to teach, but there is a decent divide between experienced players and new players. Even though new players may fully understand the rules and what the cards do, they might not be as aware of good card combos or strategies. It does mean the game is constantly evolving the more you play!
@@robertchmielecki2580 Having played over 40 games, I can say the balancing comes down more to player experience and less about which side you are on. Assuming everyone has the same experience level, the Beast has a slight advantage the first few games, but a team of hunters that communicate and work well together definitely have an the advantage once everyone is more experienced. That being said, the game balance is generally good. There are a few exceptions (Fangrir is a little OP, Disturbance of the Gods is a really tough contract for beasts, etc)

Love this game. I've had 6 plays mostly with 4 players and although I agree that it's best with 3 - 4 players game still feels very challenging and interesting for all parties involved.
This game reminds me of a warcraft 3 custom game where one player was a werewolf and the others were farmers and had to create an army before the werewolf killed you of during the night
SUSD needs more videos with facepaint, though I think Tom overdid the fake beard a bit :p #Beast
Great review of a great game! Could not stop gawking at the art while playing Beast. Truly gorgeous and does a great job of evoking vivid mental images of the world it's portraying, especially cause of the sketchiness of the illustration. Also looovvved the added interaction with other players and the world the game pushes you towards as the beast, rather than just trying to stay hidden.

It’s a fun game to play for sure but badly balanced among the monsters and hunters for sure! And keeping track of the movement can be confusing if the players don’t find you within 5-7 moves until they release their promised app tracker but haven’t! 6.5/10 for me

@@thebestmediocregamer there is an unofficial game companion that works great, but TH-cam does not let me to send the link to it.
Possibly my biggest pet peeve with board games is when the box advertises that it can be played by X-X number of players, but then it turns out that the lowest value is just one player playing twice at once.
I hate it in competitive and I hate it even more in cooperative.
Worst case scenario is when a game says it can be single player, only said solo mode is just playing with an imaginary friend.

only some folks here will appreciate this, but this feels like it could be a slightly rethemed board game adaptation of the video game Hunt: Showdown, which I'm obsessed with so im very very interested to try this
So I’ve been designing a board game for the last 6 months that is uncomfortably close to this one and I’ve got to say. Quinn with face paint on hits different when your body is full of dread.
How much of it do you have done and what's it like
@@cg5380 I expect the journey to be 2 years so we’re still a long way off. But I’ve been working on it in some capacity almost every day since January.
It’s a Monster vs Humans hidden movement game where the Humans need to complete objectives with the Monster out there hunting them. It’s sci-fi themed and there are enough differences between the 2 game that they can co-exist but you can see why finding out about this game took the wind out of my sails!

This feels like Not Alone, but... evolved? I wonder if it feels the same to play Beast as it does Not Alone?

You can't just put in age of mythology music like this, I was reliving my whole childhood instead of paying attention to the rules explanation
When I watch SUSD videos I honestly don't feel much tempted to buy the game being reviewed. I mean, I'm not watching BECAUSE of the game, or even necessarily interested in the game. I think I watch SUSD because of what it is: this nice show where I can watch something about a subject that I like with charismatic characters and good jokes. The way you guys talk about games is what passionates me. Always a really well-done piece of entertainment. Thanks.

so essentially it's a boardgame version of that failed 5 hunters vs 1giant monster videogame Evolve (in case people need a videogame comparrison) except this clearly has more personality and isn't going to be suddenly shutdown because the game isn't making any money nor filled with Day 1 DLC.
I immediately thought Tom was painted as a hotel from monopoly, which is terrifying because it means you're playing monopoly

#Beast Quinns is a legendary gamer, just like this is a legendary channel. This channel was a huge influence for me when I first got into board games in 2015/16.

I have played both and this is my honest opinion:
First off, yes they have a lot of similarities. They are both hidden movement games is the big similarity and in both cases the hidden guy has some form of minions who do annoying things.
The first big difference that comes to mind is Beast is a lot faster. FoD usually takes me and my friends 3 or 4 hours to play while Beast is more like 2 hours. Another difference on a similar note is that in FoD, I have played games where Dracula has remained hidden for the entire first 3rd of the game with no one having the first clue where he is. In Beast, the beast has to start within 2 spaces of the center. Also, the Beast has to reveal himself if he wants to attack anything (which is a huge must). Point being, FoD seems to have more searching for the hidden guy.
Another thing that is important to note is combat. The combat system in FoD 4th edition is one of the best I've ever seen. It's like an an advanced form of rock, paper, scissors and I love it. Beast, to put it bluntly, isn't as good. When you attack you just deal damage and it's pretty standard. So in this way FoD is simply better in my opinion.
I think the best selling point of Beast is the fact that you can play different characters. The biggest problem with FoD is that you always had to play Dracula and the same 4 hunters. This means Beast should have a greater replayability factor. I say should because I don't know for certain yet.
Another cool thing about Beast is upgrades. Each Beast and hunter has different upgrades that you can choose. Not sure if you've ever played D&D or similar RPG, but one of the best things is going; "I couldn't do this before, but I can now." It's just a lot of fun.
I've only played Beast twice now, so I don't exactly have it down. But here's one thing I've been seeing: the beast seems to have an advantage over the hunters. Both times I have played the beast and both times I have won. And this was against players who usually beat me. So it might be lopsided, but I hesitate to say for certain.
I think that's about it. I personally think I like FoD a bit more mainly because I LOVE the combat system. Having said that, I definitely could see people liking Beast more. Hope this helps.

For those interested in this game there is a second Kickstarter coming in about 3 months. You can get a copy through that if your stores don't have any.
That said, I would avoid any upgrade into the mini's. The art on this game is fantastic and the acrylic versions really pop.

I'm so glad you guys like this game and that I got this on Kickstarter because as you said the art is amazing! As someone who loved playing Evolve, this definitely has the same feeling as that game. Haven't gotten to play it yet but I look forward to doing so.

Yeah. played it a few times and came to conclusion it's pretty bad at 2 player count which is generally my player count these days. A game limited by luck. I prefer Noir Automata. Far better hidden movement game in play, set up, pack up, and portability. Certainly plays well 2 player and 3 player and it's super simple to teach.
You mention riskier play. The risk lies purely in the cards which is governed by a pretty fair amount of luck. We found we couldn't do a lot of actions we wanted because the cards didn't allow it. Guess who won most games? The Beast. Why? Because cards limited the ability to move and attack. For the most part, the Beast was easily tracked mainly because there's not enough actions/turns to be able to run around the board to create a wild goose chase. The Beast is forced to move towards their objective which is known to the hunters. The only "tircky" aspect is choosing a path that leads to the objectives in the least round a about way as possible. It's a game we will not miss.
Does SUSD still recommend beast after some time has passed. Reprint is currently underway but i'm undecided if i 'need' it in my already massive collection. Also from base game to all in pledge boy does the investment ratchet up! Trying to avoid FOMO but if SUSD generally liked this game would give much weight to decision to pledge. Thanks for so many years of great content SUSD

I wanted to back #beast expansion but at nearly $300 Aussie theres no way of justifing that cost for a game that was good but not great. i also wasnt super impressed with the production quality of the base game (printing errors), the insert which doesnt fit the cards sleved, or of the rulebook.

You guys made one huge mistake, the hunter has an open hand between each other. Meaning you do know the other hunter cards. This should change your opinion regaarding the 4 player game. Iactually thought the 4 player game is a bit hard for the beast because the hunters can move all their three character before the beast can do anything.
