Horseless Carriage - Shut Up & Sit Down Review

  • No horses in this game, no sir. Just car. Big horse made of metal. Kind of like a cow made of metal if we’re being real. Cowless Carriage isn’t as good a name though, plus it doesn’t make any sense. I really like the name of this game, y’know? Horseless Carriage. It’s maybe my favourite name of any tabletop game. I didn’t say that in the review because I couldn’t find a place for it, but I think it’s a true fact. Oath is pretty close behind, swiftly followed by Hey That’s My Fish.
    Enjoy!

      I remember the same when Pipeline came out a few years ago (edit to include the shoutout at the end, I thought they'd mention it!). I knew it was something I would bounce off of, but the team explained it so well and with that trademark SU&SD enthusiasm that I could completely understand what people would enjoy about it.

    I love Tom's reviews. Quinn's work is funny and on point, and Matts's reviews are clever and often amusing, but Tom is on a whole other level. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and finds the best ways to deliver his message using visually compelling sketches and artwork. It reminds me of the old Shut Up & Sit Down, back when Paul and Quinn were still experimenting and trying to make something new.

Except sometimes Tom's enthusiasm makes me want games that I can tell no one I play with will like, just because he makes them sounds so *interesting!* (E.G., I'm still kind of weirdly pining for Oath, a game I'm 90% sure I would find too cutthroat myself and that I'll never get to play, lol.)

    One Splotter game that got mentioned in the video, yet that I feel doesn't get that much love, is The Great Zimbabwe. Apart from being one of the rare games that has remotely anything to do with African culture, I find it a really nice distilled version of what Splotter games are all about. It has a nice spatial puzzle, a nice connect-this-to-that puzzle, a nice economic system that incentivizes positive player interaction, a cool cost-benefit scoring system, a suprisingly lesser amount of components and clutter than other splotter games, arguably less rules overhead and takes less time to actually play compared to FCM or Roads&Boats.

    My favorite Splotter is The Great Zimbabwe which never gets enough love. It is easy to teach. It is not fiddly and table hug; in addition it can be finished under 3 hour even with 5 players. More importantly it is the most unique game that I have ever played with it's adjustable winning condition and Mancala auction mechanism.

    • @celestialspark5697
      @celestialspark5697 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a hard time picking a favorite, but I agree that The Great Zimbabwe gets a lot of points for being relatively quick and having less overhead to learn. I will say that it's arguably the worst Splotter title at two players, though; a lot of the options in the game just have no real effect or make no sense to use without multiple opponents. (On that note, I didn't catch Tom saying it in the video, but Horseless Carriage has a hard three player minimum.)

    • @LoneWolf-zc7nw
      @LoneWolf-zc7nw ปีที่แล้ว

      @@celestialspark5697 None of Splotter are good at two players. Splotter games like Mac Gerdts need minimum 3 players to shine. I have never try but I heard Antiquity is only Splotter can be played relevantly good at two players which is one of my least favorite Splotter games.

    I have never understood the love this crew has for food chain magnate, I have never seen a game alinate everyone at the table as strongly as food chain magnate did when it hit my table. If i asked my friends to play anouther round I would be out of friends.

    I wish that shut up and sit down would review John Company Second edition, the most surprisingly refreshing niche game, that i wish got more exposure. I think that would make for a fun review.

    Great review, Tom! I appreciated the Pipeline shout out, as well. That game is such a brain workout, but I love every play of it.

    This game IS for me! I look forward to trying it eventually! (They're really working tom to the bone out here, is everyone at SUSD ok?!?)

    Great review. It tells me that I would need to run hour+ teaches and reteaches for each group I play with and at the end of every game players would say 'we need to play that again' and we never would. Seems to be a game for people who play in the same group at the same table week in week out so they can mine it's depth. That's just not me.

    I love complex games; Star Fleet Battles is my all time favorite so we're talking a game whose sequence of play is longer than several other game's rule books that can take hours and hours to play with bigger scenarios! But this sounds absolutely dreadful; more of a torture device than a game; like if we reduced SFB to just the energy allocation phase without the actual combat and maneuvering! I have played Bus and Great Zimbabwe; both were ok, but nothing I'd look to spend money on.
    That being said, I will always love you guys and your genuine videos/reviews. We don't always agree, but I always enjoy the SU&SD team and your takes on the hobby!

      Big up for Star Fleet Battles and its equally elusive Babylon 5 wars cousin. It's important to find a balance between complexity and intuitive play, so that a game can be played at different levels of expertise and engagement. My one play of Food Chain Magnate left me a bit burnt by knowing I was doomed for the last two hours of the game because I fluffed a round.
