  • The M&P compact and new M&P shield are pretty similar guns. This video shares my thoughts and opinions on the similarities and differences between the 2 and some thoughts on which to get or if its worth getting both.
    Here is a review that my friend wrote about the M&P Shield

      I recently bought an M&P compact 9mm and thought about carrying the smaller shield. I am glad I went with the compact. It is a bit more heft but the more I wear it the more I am used to it.
      I also like the idea that I have more bullets in the mag and I can change the back straps to customize it. Well worth the money.

    Just saying excellent video, I've been in the army for 6 years with two operations in Iraq, and you explain firearms like a range officer. The manual safety isn't an issue for me because all of our firearms have them including the m9. For everyone worried about not having enough time to get the safety off, it's not just carrying a sidearm that keeps you from harm, you should be moving as your drawing, try incorporating an instant sidestep as you draw to add to there target acquisition time. Thanks again, looking forward to more of your videos.

      +Sammi Grunow - Does your full size M&P 9 have the 4.25" or 5" barrel? Have you had any accuracy issues with it? I'm considering getting a 4.25", but I've read about some people having accuracy issues and I'm not sure if Smith & Wesson has gotten it completely resolved yet.

      skiggy007 I have the standard 4.25". I have had no problem with it. I think if people are having accuracy issues with a full size pistol it's probably not the gun lol. I put an Apex trigger kit on mine so the trigger pull is about 3 lbs and reduced the overall travel by %50. Honestly the trigger upgrade was a massive improvement to the gun and did help me shoot better. Personally I think the 4.25" is perfectly fine unless you're maybe doing competitions or something

  • @FriedChickenBlowout

    Just found this video as a recommended video from TH-cam. I'm quite impressed, well presented and well spoke. Great points. I have extensive experience with the M&P line, having owned 10 of them (5", 4.25", Compact, and Shields) over the last 6+ years since they were released. I've got many videos on my site about them and I've worked on about 50 different M&Ps for friends, family, co-workers and students of mine.
    My take after owning 10 of them, is that now I only own 2 x M&P9L and 2 x 9mm Shields. I sold off 3 compacts that I had over time and 3 x 4.25" full size guns. The Compact was the most intrinsically accurate M&P that I've owned. But I never liked the overall grip length and always used the finger extension. I prefer the grip length and size of the Shield without or with the longer mag. I normally carry the longer mag as my reload and carry the gun with the short mag. I refer the lighter weight of the Shield, loaded with 124gr ammo it's more of a difference than presented in the video. I also prefer the narrower profile. And went fitted with the Apex Sear and USB, the trigger becomes very nice and accurate improves. I've also found the Warren Tactical Night Sights are the perfect fit for the narrow slide profile.
    Narrowing down my collection of M&P pistols was on of the better things I've done, I see no point in the 4.25" full size and as such sold them. The Compact however does have a role. If someone asked me to help them pick out a single gone that can do it all from home protection, carry and even IDPA type matches, I alway suggest the compact if they can only afford one gun. It does it all, shoots like a full size and can carry a light if needed. The capacity is very good and takes full size mags like you mentioned. It's a good gun and like you said, your mileage may vary.
    Thanks for the well done video, just adding my take for those those trying to decide.

    • @SnareMan
      @SnareMan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments and the kind words. You've had quite the collection! I agree on adding the Apex trigger to the Shield. I have one of them in one of my Compacts and they are pretty nice. I like carrying the Shield, but I agree that the Compact is a great all around gun.

    Very well done. I have already decided to go with the 9mm compact over the shield. I have a S&W mod 60 .357 that does a good job of a pocket gun and would not gain enough round count to go with a Shield. You did a good job of thoughtful comparison between the two. Both are great guns.

      ARIS if you’re in a fire fight with 12 gang members, you have zero awareness. Concealed carry is meant as a last resort. If you’re concerned about 12 gang members than you shouldn’t be carrying an 8 round ccw. With that logic, it’s no wonder you blame ideologies due to your fallacies. It’s common sense and OP had a point.

    Great video ! I decided the Shield was the better option for EDC. I use a pinky extension on the flush mags so 7+1=8, only 2 rounds less than legal limit here in the socialist republic of Mass. I may pick up a compact at some point to do some comparisons of my own as I have fairly large hands so I use a pachmyr sleeve on my shield. gives me a grip almost as thick as the double stack grip without sacrificing the "thinness" of the rest of the gun.
    ***edit** recently picked up a 9C. Now I rotate them in and out of my EDC. I am more accurate with the 9C, it's definitely softer shooting. I also have the new Magguts +2 kit so now I have 10 rounds on the shield as well. Clothing options are what now dictate which one is on my hip. I love both of these firearms. :)

    Well, it was the best of both worlds as of 7/21/16.As much as i liked my Shield, i realized the 9c is my favorite CC firearm in my collection.Picked up the 9c May of this year and it's been my go to ever since(with the Sig P320sc coming in a close second).
    Went to my local gun shop and they had a 9c in FDE.Thought to myself..."I gotta to have it! I've pretty much been carrying double stacks exclusively for the past several months with my Shield and PPS on the back burners.I ended up with an even trade.The Shield and PPS for the 9c along with $75 and two extra mags. I thought i would regret this decision, two guns for one, but i'm completely happy with it.

    I went from a full-size M&P to a Shield, thinking if I was going to downsize to a lighter gun for daily carry, I might as well get something that wasn't just a regular M&P with a smaller capacity. After carrying the Shield for nearly a year as a lefty, I'm finding myself switching to a compact instead of a Shield. Two main reasons: I miss the slide stop on the right, and the fact that the mag release isn't reversible (although it looks like it could be!) on the Shield, have just slowly chaffed at me every time I practice. For anyone who's left-handed, I strongly encourage you to give the compact another look before you settle on the Shield. I thought I'd be okay without the full ambi options the other M&Ps offer, but it just did me in.

      Have you looked into the Honor Guard by Honor Defense? It's similar to the Shield, except it has a ambidextrous magazine release, ambidextrous slide lock and a optional ambidextrous safety. So far, the only problem I hear is that it can fire if you drop it, but I hear that company is fixing the problem.

    I had an instructor show me the difference between a standard MP9c vs. Shield 9 vs Shield 9 with the talon gun grips applied and it makes the shield feel exactly like the MP9c. Increased grip and frame width makes it almost identical to the MP9c but with the added benefit of the 1in profile for CCW. The Talon Grip makes up for the lack of interchangeable backs on the Shield but made it feel much more secure in your hand. Just an idea for those who like the slim profile of the Shield but didn't like the grip (I really disliked it) and its only $20.

    Very nice,great comparison. I wish I would have found your video on this subject 4 months ago. I placed a deposit on a 40 cal Shield in July and got tired of waiting . I ordered a Ruger SR40c instead. The SR40c came in and after doing the paperwork and paying for the Ruger, the owner of my LGS placed a Shield 9mm in the display case. This was the first Shield the had gotten since late May. My wife looked at me and said"Put a deposit on it and maybe I'll carry that one". I'm still in shock.

    Excellent comparison as I drew the exact same conclusion after owning, shooting 15K+ rounds, and carrying the 9c for several years. The shield is a nice shooter, but not worth the tradeoff in firepower/mag cap, especially when you can use the full size 17 round mags of the M&P9 as a back up.

      @jaf00181 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Surg Hell no, not me. How the shield could feel uncomfortable to someone blows my mind. It's so easy to hold and just feels perfect. The damn compact is short and fat and even though I have big hands, the Shield just feels so much better. And if you're conceal carrying, the shield in an IWB is waaaaay more comfortable than the compact in anything. I don't care what specs are on paper, the shield feels way slimmer. The Shield, by the way, isn't the same gun as the compact or full size only smaller. It was totally redesigned from the ground up to be different from the others.

    Just noted this was posted in 2012 and still a relevant conversation. I'm sure you're aware that S&W is coming out with a Performance Center ported barrel and slide for the shield not sure about the compact although that would be a nice option, I'm leaning toward the compact I have a borrowed Shield and it seems "too" slim I've yet to shoot it, will do this weekend. The shield reminds me of the Walther PPS. Great review and subbed

      @SnareMan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +amacro11 Thanks for the sub Al! I actually hadn't heard about the ported barrel for the Shield. THe downside of a ported barrel for self defense purposes though is if you have to shoot from chest retention position (one handed with your hand on the side of your chest) you are going to get a bunch of baddness blowing up into your face. It's unpleasant enough with a regular barrel.

    For me its a hard choice. Recently I sold my Shield to my brother. He already had one, but wanted another for a "New York Reload". I've gone back to my M&Pc (its actually a 357sig, but I also have 40S&W and 9mm barrels so I can carry any of those three calibers). The Shield is thinner and lighter, but surprisingly the M&Pc carries just as good. And my particular M&Pc has a better trigger. And I like having more rounds before needing a mag change. I really liked the Shield. Who knows, I might wind up buying another. But for now, I'm in good shape with the M&Pc.
    Both are fine guns and either will work for CCW.

    Ive owned a a full size m&p9 and in my experience. It isnt the width that made it difficult to conceal in nor was the barrel length. Rather it was the grip due to its longer 17rnd magazine. For me the m&p9c is a better choice because trading round count for less width just isnt necessary. the M&p9c hold more rounds, is still light and is small enough to conceal yet big enough to be able to fight with.

    4 oz is a big difference when carrying. Especially when you get under 20oz. Pick up a gun that weighs 20oz, now pick up a gun that weighs 16oz. Very big difference. Shield carries much better than the M&Pc. Not as bulky. When you start talking about IWB carry you feel a major difference. I can feel the M&Pc, the Shield you hardly know its there. Every little difference in size makes big differences when it carries

    Awesome review. A note for anyone who is not an experienced CCW person, the thickness of the pistol makes a HUGE difference in ability to conceal without "printing". The Shield will allow for a greater variety in clothing options due to it's slimmer profile. But, if you're willing to work around the issue by adapting your wardrobe, most experienced trainers will tell you to go with the gun with higher ammo capacity. Plus, with the M&P you have the option of adding Crimson Trace laser grips!

    Thank you for putting so much thought and effort into comparing these two. Extremely informative, not rushed, no mumbling, no editorializing, just the facts, but without being so dry my computer spontaneously combusts.
    My wife and I have tried both at the range, and she prefers the shield to the compact. Having larger hands than hers, naturally, I love the compact. Hers will be purse-carry and mine will likely be IWB once I lose 20 lbs.
    What we both love about the M&P line is they feel as if they were made for our hands, specifically. Great balance, too.
    With the current S&W rebate, I picked up my wife's Shield last month for $239 (after $75 rebate). That's now down to $224. $224 is junk gun territory, pricewise.
    Still can't do as well on a Compact, but they're not a bad buy, lightly used. Sub-$400 with maybe a couple of extras, but that's fine.
    BTW, her Shield was part of a complete assembly of items I gave her for our 20th wedding anniversary. Yes, in Texas, 20th anniversary is nice handgun.

    I have both the .40c and the .40 shield and they are both good for different things. I prefer the shield for carry due to it being slimmer but like he said the weight is more than you would expect. I carried the compact for a while and it was too thick for someone who is slim built and I wear lite clothing in a warm state all the time making it harder to conceal without printing. Compact is now my home defense/range gun. Good video.

    My wife "appropriated" my Shield 9mm and refused to let me carry it. I was in the process of getting another. But after my gun shop ran into supplier issues, (there was a run on shields I guess), I came across your video.
    After seeing the similar footprints of them, except for thickness, I ended up ordering the 9c in FDE.
    Best purchase I ever made. It is accurate, lighter than the full size MP9 and comfortable to shoot.
    It is my EDC locally. I carry my full size MP9 when I travel.

    I bought the 9c yesterday after lamenting months over paying WAY too much for a shield from those who have been lucky enough to find one. I just happened to check at Scheels where they had one for $549. That was up $20 from the last one they had, but still, it's the first time I have seen one anywhere! I bought it after seeing this review a while ago.. and I'm glad I did. It conceals VERY well and with the extra capacity, it just makes sense. Now I can quit lamenting! Great vid.

    Thank you for that video. I know its a year old but I am a recently new gun owner and have been looking at obtaining a good carry firearm. A business associate recently purchased the Shield and absolutely loves it for carrying purposes. Yes, the magazine is less with just the 7 and 8 but again for carrying purposes he feels it should do the trick if needed. I looked at the compact today but feel the shield would be more appropriate for carrying purposes. You helped me make my decision.

    After watching this video, I'm glad that I finally "got" my Shield yesterday chambered in .40. I love the look and feel of it, and the grip angle. The way it felt in my hand was just perfect! The only other subcompact pistol I was considering chambered in .40 was the XD Mod.2, but I never had the chance to hold it. Interestingly, my brother gave me a black Smith and Wesson watch last year, and he didn't even care about firearms. So maybe it was a premonition that I would eventually get a S&W firearm. At that time I really wanted to purchase a 4-inch S&W 686 Plus revolver but decided to get a semi-auto because of several obvious reasons. I first got a Springfield XD Service model with a 4-inch barrel chambered in .40 over a year ago. I went in to get a Hi Point chambered in 9mm but ended up trying to get an XD chambered in 9mm. Ended up getting the .40 full-sized model because all 9mm XDs in SoCal were sold out at that time. I'm happy that I got the .40 and I love practicing with it. Then I really wanted to get the Mod.2 subcompact in .40 a few months ago. Couldn't do that because they're illegal in Commiefornia. So after watching another video exclusively about the Shield chambered in .40, I felt that it was a better fit for me and for conceal carry, even though the Mod.2's magazines are double stack. But you sacrifice weight and size as a result, so I'll be very happy when I finally receive my Shield next week. I can only hope that I'll finally get my CCW...in L.A. County! Got the official response letter from the L.A. Sheriff but no denial. Just saying that they're waiting for the Peruta ruling.

    Nice video ! I chose the Shield as my carry gun in addition to my standard M&P9. I like the thinner feel on the shorter grip over the wide one on the Compact. It's ( the grip width) not as noticeable on a full size gun like the M&P but is ( at least to me ) on the smaller gun. Also I really liked the safety on a carry gun. I know some people don't but it wasn't a problem for me, in fact it was a selling point. I like the single stack clip for it's size and it was a good trade off versus the extra weight carrying almost twice as many rounds. The Compact seemed to be almost like a full sized gun with just a tiny bit taken off and even more so with a larger magazine and I didn't want a carry gun that was practically the same size as the gun I considered too big to carry comfortably already. Quality guns all of them though........

    Thanks for the video. I have the Shield and I love it when I am carrying it but hate it when I am at the range shooting. Just like you said I ran out of bullets way too quickly. I am now forced to buy more magazines (even extended ones, which are impossible to find for the shield) so I do not have to keep loading the magazines every minute. Shield: Positives: Carry/size + price + accuracy = great! Negatives: Training at the range (100+ bullets) is a nightmare. I hope you would not need more than 1 or 2 shots if you are defending yourself, but just remember that 7 or even 8 rounds are way too little, you can run out of bullets in a very very short period of time.

    Hey SnareMan! I posted here about 10 months ago after obtaining my M&P Compact, and I'm back today for a review of your highly informative video and opinions. I've owned and carried a wide variety of Glocks as primary and back-up guns since Glock landed in the USA, and I have nothing bad to say about Glock; however, when I held a Glock in one hand, and the M&P in the other, my decision was immediately made for the M&P! For me it was sorta like choosing drum sticks.... they all might look alike, but for me it's all in the feel, the balance, the weight, the thickness, the length, the tip, I'll bet you know what I'm talking about! Thanks for taking the time to do the vids, and the patience and concern for your volumes of responses...... God Bless!!!
