    I carry the shield 40 with +1 Hyve mag plate and an extra magazine. I used to carry the Glock 23 and felt it so uncomfortable and makes me conscious that I’m printing. The shield - sometimes I seem to forgot that I have it in my body. It is a self defense gun. You don’t intend to stick around and engage in a fire fight. Whenever you can you avoid but when pressed into a right situation you engage accordingly.

    I love my shield 40. California model with hi viz sights and hyve base plates. I carry with the flush fit in and two 8 round spares. I feel like this is plenty of firepower for anything I may encounter. I just want to get better at shooting it.

    As a firearms instructor I answer the question "what pistol should I buy?" My answer is always "the pistol that feels good in your hand" I then explain that one has to touch and hold a few to get a feel on now they feel. My wife and I each have our CCW and we each have the M&P 9c, M&P Shield 380 EZ and the M&P 380 Bodyguard. Additionally have the M&P M2.0 for duty carry. The correct fit in the hand is the most important consideration. World statistics show that a confrontation won't lase more than 3 shots so capacity ought not be an issue. If more rounds are needed, carry extra magazines.

    Have the 40C, and a Shield Plus. There's no wrong answer here really. They're both great options. I'd consider the 40C a bit easier to shoot, nothing drastic. And I'd consider the Shield a bit easier to carry, again, nothing drastic. I generally run the 40c in a vehicle, and carry the Shield. But happy either way. Something about the M&P 40s. I have 2 of them, and they're excellent. They somehow just feel a bit better than anything else out there to my hand. The M&P was designed around the 40 SW Cartridge, maybe that has something to do with it. Cheers.

    I have both the 9c and the shield 40. The 9c has a laser sight and custom trigger. My wife took it almost immediately when I brought it home to carry in her purse. I bought the shield 40 for myself and loved it. Slim, light weight with heavy firepower. I added night sights to it and lightened the trigger. First time my wife picked it up...I no longer had the 40. She loved the feel of it and she also likes the power of the 40. We are both very proficient shooting so the reduced ammo does not bother either of us.
    Our belief is, if you are going to carry you better be good with what you carry, make every round count. If you are not confident and proficient enough to stop the threat with less than 12 to 15 rounds, then you are a threat to others as well as yourself and you should not be carrying! If you can't successfully end a gun fight with 7 rounds, then you should run!

    Great guns and great review. I own the 9mm Shield, and it is currently my only pistol, (besides my wife's pink 9mm SCCY), and it is my everything gun. I use it for CC, HD and range. With that reason alone, it gives me more reason to practice with it. The 9c is on the list of the next gun to buy, but for now, the Shield fits the bill.

    Great video, with good information and comparisons. Carried a revolver for some years before switching to a semi-auto, always get a laugh out of the "How many rounds do you need?" debate. Well placed shots beat "spray & pray" any day of the week. If you feel the need to carry around a box of ammo with you, have at it; but most will be very well served by a light, concealable gun.

    I got a brand new M&P 9c this year(2015), and it doesn't have a thumb safety. I like it better than the narrow grip of the Shield. The slide is smooth w/o bulk. I'm lefthanded, and I love the ambidextrous slide lock, as well as the ability to switch over the magazine release to the right.

    At 8:47 you reveal a thought that is normal, but fatal. Who of us walks out the front door in the morning with 100% percent certainty that we will be involved in a firefight that day? Not many of us. But when it does happen, you need to be prepared to lay down an initial heavy volley to suppress a threat. Even with a Shield and rapid magazine changes, the emphasis is on a large, initial volume of fire (hence, compact over Shield). This was a great video. Thanks for posting it. Be well.

    NOTE: FBI statistics prove most one on one confrontations are over within 3 shots. Most end with the display of the pistol. I ask the question to my students "do you really need 50 rounds on you if ending a confrontation happens at the display of your pistol? Even armed robbers with pistols run like hell when being shot at.

      My Shield 9mm is my everything gun. My CC, HD and range gun. Plus, it doesn't have the manual safety. The only safety you need is the one between your ears. Just gives me more reason to practice more with it. I know there is no such thing as a perfect "one size fits all" gun, but the Shield works fine for me.

    for the difference in fire power (rounds) you forgot to address the difference in price, if i save $150 on a shield vs compact how many extra magazines (& magazine holders) could i buy? I'm guessing like 6 extra mags - for the price savings. So whos carrying more now (for the same price)? But I believe you can drop in full size 15 round mags in to the compact too.

    Being left handed I have the Honor Guard instead of the Shield. The Honor Guard weighs 22oz and the 9c weighs 24.7oz (a deck of playing cards weighs 3oz). Both are the same size except for thickness. With my normal clothing the 9c is just as easy to conceal year round and the short grips are comfortable while driving. I find it harder to be comfortable carrying with the length of a 17 round grip. I am testing both and have to decide between the incredible grip texture on the HG vs the hand filling grip of the 9c. You can get more intimate, so to speak, with one gun that is always with you so get what works for you. I expect to end up with the 9c as my do everything gun because of the capacity. Thanks for the video.

    I have both...and find myself carrying the Shiedl 99% of the time. The little bit more thinner the Shield is and the little bit less weight does make a difference all day, every/most days during the week especially while sitting in a car or sitting anywhere for that matter. Love both guns but the Shield is my favorite period. I do carry the compact if going to a more "touchy" area to have the few xtra rounds....not like that would be needed statistically. 7 is all you need generally. like that the compact takes the full size mags....options are good.

      I would rather have the higher capacity everywhere I go. Which is exactly what I do, I don’t leave it at home because I am not a pussy about carrying a large gun the hole reason to carry is to get an edge. 5-7 rounds don’t always stop a deadly threat, no one ever thinks about body armor, or barriers, or the chaos of real gun fights, carry the highest capacity firearm that you will comfortably carry outside the home what ever that may be for you, but for me that is not a shield, I chose compact any day and all day.

    I bought the m&p 40c based on how it felt in my hand and felt that 40 S&W was a better caliber choice for my needs.. The shield just felt like there wasn't enough girth for a comfortable grip. I do not carry it most of the time concealed because I don't have to in Idaho, on my hip is perfectly acceptable. While I do conceal carry it from time to time the extra thickness hasn't been an issue. The pistol performs flawlessly and for me is a great all round pistol. I use the full size magazine when at the range and when I'm out in the woods.

    Wait...you'll take the Shield if just "going around town, not going to a fire fight". Do you know when you're going to a fire fight? If you do, best just take an AR-15 or similar. I have to agree with Albee4ty5. Until I got my Shield I intermittently carried my bigger guns. I always wanted to try to carrying the bigger guns but found that they weren't always compatible with what I was wearing and took a lot of effort to conceal. I have a Foxx Little Foxx hybrid holster and I can make that disappear in the 3 o clock position even with a tight fitting t-shirt on. The key is to have a gun on your person at all times. I can vouch for your position. I didn't always carry my other guns. I got lazy sometimes because I didn't feel like going through the hassle of trying to conceal them.

So I know if I am going to a more...ummm..hostile area, I can throw in the full size 17 round mag. Also I don't have a safety on either of my guns...Consistency is the key in training. Also 1/4 of an inch is worth the space of not carrying a second magazine. Food for thought...Great video.

    Nice comparison. My wife and I carry the 9mm shield. When I got hers it came with the safety. She has always had a pistol with a safety. I have always carried a glock so I got the no safety model. The trigger pull feels heavier in my shield than hers. Don't know how that happens but I am telling ya it is noticeably heavier in mine. Someone on drugs or has a mental issue, can be difficult to stop ! Here's an example of a police shooting where having more rounds matter, this could happen to anyone. twitter.com/RealJamesWoods/status/1303010119093870593?s=09&fbclid=IwAR27cemH5Dy1vqkBB9LT1f9aCU6QDY6WY5sP74ZBxEhrwcUb3tjF-3cNYRg

      Leo Guy,
      "... can be difficult to stop !"
      That video gave me chills. I'll bet that the second officer was very grateful for the first's marksmanship.
      It also makes a good case for police to carry short barreled rifles. It should be watched by anyone who complains that police are too quick to use lethal force and should always use non-/less-than-lethal weapons first. I'd like to see them explain how the timing would work out for that in this case.
      An average armed citizen would be much less likely to encounter someone like that than a LEO would, but my local police had a similar situation with a dog not far from my house. It could just as easily have come after me and my dog any of the many times that we had walked past its house.
      I don't know what caliber they use, but the officer who killed the dog told me that the first several shots to its head did not stop it from coming at them. Having to take time to reload could have resulted in bite damage that they were able to avoid. Reloading might also be a bit difficult with a 35 pound dog trying to rip your calf muscle off. (Or the guy in that video stabbing or strangling you.)
      Kinda' makes me doubt my preference for the comfort and convenience of a lighter load.

    I have a 9C in 9mm and a performance center shield in the same caliber. I like the ability of the palm sweats to fit my hand on the 9C. I’ve added the CT lasergrip as well. The shield just doesn’t feel as good. The shield has the thumb safety and the 9C doesn’t. Prefer not to have it. The added round count is another score for the 9C. The width doesn’t bother me much; although the thinner is a little more comfortable. The only thing that’s a big win for my shield is the performance center trigger is a lot better than my 9C!

    I got 9c and carry it with right-hand Blade tech right-hand iwb on my back smoothly. I am Asia man with smaller body but I can conceal my 9c naturally. The important is keep training to draw the righ-hand iwb from my back, slide to load, and fire. That's all.

    I can see thinner being maybe more comfortable, due to less weight not size. But were talking about 2.7oz.... Which is not enough to sway me at all. Albeit the extra 6rounds adds to this as well, but you have 6 more rounds... But far as concealment? It's better with shorter grip, as in where you insert the mag. The thinner side does not make a difference at all for me, for concealment. But capacity, creepy sticking trigger(when you squeeze it mid way, instead of at the bottom of trigger. I dont own a regular MP to see if this happens with them as well), gun jams if you fire without mag(most times), along with the stupid no option safety. Makes me not like the Shield beyond a new novelty item(due to how thin it is. Great show off for females...They always love mine), that works well for say gym clothes. Doesn't even make a good back up pistol.... For the mags are not interchangeable with the other MP's. Then I cannot find any 8rd mags for it, been over a year now..... If I were to choose between these 2, then the compact with no safety option.

      Its not about being more comfortable. It is simply easier to conceal a slimmer gun. Its not about comfort at all. In a good holster there is no difference whatsoever in comfort. A thicker double stack gun is always going to have more of a tendency to print. There's just no getting around that. You have to be a little more careful where you position the gun and what you wear with it. I have a Shield 40 and I don't even have to think about what I'm going to wear. I slap it on my belt at 3 o clock and it doesn't print even with a tight fitting shirt on.

    Just bought the new Compact 2.0, (I also own a 2.0 full size) and I own a Shield gen 1. After one day of use, I have to say, I'm still more comfortable with the Shield, and I think I'm sticking with it.

  • @andrewroche3504
    @andrewroche3504 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Said have owned both. I had a hard time using both hands when shooting the shield. I now have the 9c. Fits me like a glove. I recently bought a N82 holster as a carry IWB. I know there is a gun there but don't notice it. It's like having a wallet. You know it's back there but you soon forget about it till you need it. No matter what you do decide to carry, make sure you have a good comfortable holster.

    I have both of these in 9mm, I carry my 9c way more. I never know where I'll end up at work. I might be working in the best part of one town and then the worst part of another 150 miles away all in the same day. I like having more firepower for the unknown. I like my Shield for when I'm off work and want to be comfortable around my town.

    When you get down to the width of the shield you can carry a 1911 and get the same round count in an compact carry model. Depends on where you live I guess. I live in an area with very high violent crime, I like being able to carry a full size spare mag for my 40c. The fact you can interchange mags is a huge plus for the compacts.

    • @strat1080
      @strat1080 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not Required, and why would that be better than a Shield? All you would end up with is a heavier gun with wider grips than a Shield. That's the thing about the Shield. There isnt' any part of the entire gun that is any wider than .95". And I would trust a modern 40 cal defensive loading out of a shorter barrel much more than any for the 45 ACP. The 45 was designed with much lower pressures in mind and simply doesn't perform well out of shorter barrels. Federal 180 gr HST in 40 cal does 950 fps out of a 3" and expands nicely even through denim. I don't know why some people think 1911s are so magical. The Shield would cost much less than a compact 1911 as well. For whatever reason some folks don't hold the 40 s&w in high regard but it is actually a more powerful loading than the 45 ACP. In service size guns the 155 gr loads are generating the same energy numbers of a 357 Magnum.

    Thanks for the review. I've decided on the shield. I've tried carrying the 2.0 compact for the past few weeks. It's not the overall size that bothers me, but the thickness is just not comfortable to me. I enjoy the m&p line.. Funny I've never owned the shield.

      4 Deuce exactly what has me leaning towards the compact now (haven’t shot yet) vs the shield (which I have shot) but it’s light and so thin that to me it was “snappy” like most smaller 380s. If the compact is gonna bring more weight thanks to the capacity to help with recoil etc...I’m all for it

    • @nealatthecrossfishing

      And see... I’m leaning the exact opposite way. (Thinking) of selling my compact for a shield because of size (printing and other issues). But I love how it feels in my hand and shoots, that’s why I bought it.

    All three are great. You need to decide how many rounds you want to have, if you are comfortable with 8 rounds in gun, I would go Shield. If you want more which the other two offer it is a toss up. Price is close to. Handle both and see which one feels the best in your hand. You want one gun for many applications. But if your gun is too heavy or fat, you probably will not want to carry it. More rounds equals more weight as well. I would go Shield if you can find one. Thanks

    AMEN! Thin and light wins evertime. Those are the guns people will carry and not leave in the glove box or under the seat or maybe not within reach at all. If you're going to carry, carry something you will carry all the time. For me it's the SIG P938, it's expensive but its' the best ccw I've ever come across. I have an M&P 45c which I love....it's just a little too wide and a little too heavy. My Glock 19 is about the same size as the M&P 45c.

  • @Hilander1298
    @Hilander1298  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not just the round count, but the gun itself is fatter. Heavier all the way around. So just grip thickness is all you care about? Not the thickness of the slide, that is what is stuck down in your britches, not the grip. Grip length I can see for sure. Just curious about that. Thanks for watching.

    Comparing my 9C to my wife's Shield. I choose the one with more rounds. They are both loaded fully with the extended grip mags, so 9 in the Shield and 13 in my 9C. Weight difference is 5.6oz loaded and the 1/4" difference in width. When you put them in identical IWB holsters, I can't tell much difference in the size. Yes 5.6 oz or 1/3 of a pound is noticeable. But I will take the extra 4 rounds which is 28% of the weight difference. And if I carry an extra mag I have 25 rounds, so I'm prepared for anything including the gang of zombies😉

    I had the same debate and decided to go with the .40C over the Shield. Thought it would we be better to have 3 extra rounds over the Shield. The 40C is only slightly wider than the Shield and the weight is difference is negligible. Plus with the compact I can use my full size M&P mags in a pinch.

    I thought you covered the "manual safety" issue pretty well. In the last 6 months, my local paper has reported 4 accidental discharges (2 injured themselves) and 0 times for a gun to be used in self defense. A safer gun seems to be more important than shooting quickly many times over.
    Also, I don't understand the purpose of a safety for a left-handed shooter that is only on the left side.

    I was looking into the shield, but I like the slightly larger size of the compact, plus the 10 round 0.40 S&W capacity. Need to see if my gun range has the compact available to rent. I've shot the shield in 9mm, and it's not so bad. However, the width is too narrow for my large hands. The extra quarter inch might make the difference in looking for.

    The thing is you never know ahead if your going to a fire fight. And when it happens everyone want to have as much ammo as possible. Not sure if 7 rounds is enough. Better than 0 rounds. But I think 12 plus is better. there is no do over. when your in a gun fight you cant rewind and go get your 17 round mag.
