Porsche Cayman GT4 RS on road review. This or the 992 GT3?

- The Porsche Cayman GT4 RS is the Porsche we never thought would be built but somehow, Porsche allowed its GT Department to stuff the brilliant 9000rpm, 4.0litre, 500bhp flat-six into the Cayman GT4. But is it even better than the regular GT3? Let's find out..

Possibly the greatest and most functional interior of all time. It is far superior to any Haptic Touch screen crap that are on new cars. Well done Porsche.
I agree! Manufacturers are making cars safer and safer with all kinds of technology and then they go and hide the heater controls, window de-fog etc in the depths of the infotainment system or silly touch screen controls which is only marginally better than in the infotainment system! Even the latest computers still have a raised bump on the 'J' key so that you can feel it for correct finger placement.
Only beef I have relates to the door pulls which I think are dangerous. Hard to open the door ,and even harder if the car was on fire and you needed to get out quick.
Absolutely- haptic stuff stopped me buying a MK8 Golf GTI - such a shame
@@alenaalena13 I never had any issues with those door handles. After all we use something similar in motorsports and the safety regulations are quite a bit higher on race cars.
I'll never buy a car with capacitive touch controls, aside from the nav/infotainment screen.
I am nearly 50 yrs old but when I grow up, I want to be just like you Harry.
I'll be 52 on Sunday and i feel the same 😂
I’m 43 and me too
49 and the same - made worse by the fact I used to scratch around on those very roads!
I'm 3 months old same here
Harry's admirers are so hypocritical. If an 18yo youtuber was filming himself driving like a maniac on a 2 lane road whilst loosing traction and taking corners way beyond a speed considered safe IN THE WET mind U, i think you'd all be very critical and accusatory of the young punks. Harry's one mistake from a head on collision with an innocent oncoming car and everyone gives him a pass. Aren't these types of test drives suited for a closed circuit ????
Wow, that sound! This is the reason why I will never find enthusiasm for electric sportscars. They can be how fast and competent they like, but without real sound they don't give me any feelings.
Been waiting all Sunday morning for this it’s not a complete Sunday until the latest Harry’s Garage drops
Love that colour. Amazed at how loud it is in the cabin, must almost need earplugs at that level.
Even louder outside the cabin with that paint job and go faster bits! :0)
@@williamr3840 only thing it’s missing to be even faster is some racing stripes
@@twitch_not_olli5599 Flames down the sides, furry dice and boom bass speakers + lights underneath! :0)
Yeah it's great isn't it
you love Yellow.....? ok
Wow, this thing really sings! Sure the least unpleasant 116 Db I can think of :)
Always a pleasure to watch your detailed, no-nonsense reviews of such awesome cars. Thank you for the upload!
Wait until they go all electric…
Great review! Hope you can get your vehicle scales working again, love seeing actual weight vs. claimed weight!
Driving heaven as it seems to me. The squirreling on full attack was great to witness. Compliments to Harry for keeping it in check. Such a shame these kind of cars will become either trailer queens or investments (and disappear in collections). What a machine…
June delivery here and it'll be on the track very often!

@@Mich-kc1mb The car was neither driven over the speed limit nor too fast. It appeared fast because of the character of the car together with the tyres in the cold and wet.
@@Mich-kc1mb oh grow up for goodness sake.
The Cayman is closer to the older 911s in some ways. I like it!
Exactly what I've been thinking as well. Light(er), small, agile, fun, raw. Today's 911 GTs are faster yes, but too surgical, while the Cayman GT4 series is more playful.
I had a base 987.1 Cayman several years ago. It really did have an old-school feel to it. Almost like a late-era air-cooled 911 except you didn't have to worry about oversteer.
@@glennhavinoviski8128 987 looks sooo good nowadays.
@@glennhavinoviski8128 I agree. I am now on my 2nd 987 3.4S and absolutely love it. A lot of car for the money and can really use all the power in twisty b roads.
@@borinvlogs I went from 987.2 to 987.2 S now on Cayman R with many mods, loving the difference lighter more responsive and 30bhp more.
I’ve done over 7k miles in mine since July, epic car!
How is it on UK roads? And is it ok loud for longer trips like motorways journeys to be comfortable?
@@jay_b..
No problem at cruising speeds on UK motorways. Turn off the sports exhaust and listen to your passenger or a podcast!
What a glorious sound on that Cayman🤩
Wonderful car. Cool that it finally got the engine and gearbox and no longer held back.
Love the light flywheel and the super-fast blips. But way too loud. 110dB would leave your ears ringing and damage your hearing. I think the sweet spot is the Cayman GT4.0 with the stick shift. You could get shorter gears installed and have a driver's car.
A few days ago found myself wondering how long before Harry reviews this car and there it is, my early Christmas present, thanks Harry and Co.
I'd love to see you do a 911 Dakar review and test it off road on your farm. Thanks for all the great content.
Brilliant idea
911 Dakar to Dakar :-)!
As a 981 cayman S owner, this is like 125% of mine in every way. Best Porsche chassis produced today in my mind.
I am not a fan of the yellow but WHAT A MACHINE! Surely one of the all-time greatest Petrol cars!? But I don't agree the interior is "Weirdly dated", the ergonomics are just PERFECTION! Brilliant vid though Harry! 👍🏻 I WANT ONE!!! 😍😩
Agreed - dreadful colour scheme 😢
Agree. The 992 interior is a bummer for a sports car
Petrol cars rule at this stage there is no climate change nonsense that's just propaganda to get a carbon tax. electric cars please wake me up when it's over
Is this a parody of TH-cam comments on English car review channels?
What a fantastic looking and sounding car 😊 … As you say Harry a very focussed car but we should celebrate that it’s been made 👍
This is such a purist driving car, well done Porsche and thanks for bringing this to us, Harry.
Comparing apples and oranges, always hard. Having owned a 4 and numerous 3's (and 911's), a 4 makes any driver great, it so easy to drive hard and fast due to the mid engine. But if you want a challenge to get the most out of a GT car, then you need a 3!
But the Harry the interior is perfect, not dated, who needs a massive TV on the dash, it is a sports car!
GT3 is far easier to drive fast. This is the one! Very much agree on the interior. 992 interior is just hopeless
The GT3 is much easier to drive because the wheelbase is much longer.
@@Gentleman...Driver I don't agree with that. A long whell base will add to the comfort level and daily ease, sure, but a 4 is lot easier on twisty roads and track to pivot on the it's centre being mid mount. I was ale to throw it around on roads and track and never once got close to loosing it, so easy and predictable. QWhwere as the 3' and 911's have a pendulum effect and it can bite, bad! So my point is to maximise the performance the driver has to ensure that he has the front end stable and maintain power thru the corner (and no lift off) or you will loose it! Period. The only caveat to this is the 992 GT3 with 4WS and the engine slightly forward, has changed to dynamics (or bad habits) of the previous.
@@911aircooled5 The 992 GT3 has almost no pendulum effect. It is so neutral and predictable. I have driven both cars on track, and I felt the 992 was a lot easier to drive on the edge. The GT4 is more "alive". I liked it a lot more.
What an engine, what car, what a drive, what a channel, what a, err......alright, I'll stop there! Brilliant review as always, Harry.
What a comment!
"I have an engine light on. Let's see if I can hit 9000rpm round here." Got to love Harry.
Tyre pressure warning light, probably due to cold weather
@Nord Mann 17:16, definitely looks like an engine light.
What a car! Hats off to Harry for pushing so hard to get the noise in damp Fall conditions with summer tires.
Brilliant review as always Harry. It still annoys me though that these GT Porsche are not available to buy. It’s a show thing to what porsche can do and a tiny minority of people can actually get one, 99.9 won’t do a but irrelevant really. But that’s porsche for you!
Yes this is complete unobtanium - most OPCs (Porsche dealers) will only get one of these at most - and unsuprisingly, they'll sell it to their best customer only - i.e. whoever has spent the most in the last few years. Porsche could produce more cars... but that would ruin their fleet average CO2 and hence give them a large fine from the EU
The g/km on a GT3 RS is less than that of the non hybrid Panameras and some Cayennes, yet Porsche don't artificially restrict the production of those.
It's fake scarcity, they could produce enough to satisfy demand.
Nothing new. We test drove a first Gen Cayman 20 odd years ago at London’s biggest dealer and even back then, way before g/km or any other external factor was a thing, the dealer said Porsche would always limit production numbers of its top models to increase rarity and keep up prices. Even back then a nicely specced, but fairly standard, Cayman had almost no depreciation when driven off the forecourt, whilst most cars at the time would drop 20-30% as soon they left the dealer.
@@leangrypoulet7523 I lost a huge amount on my Cayman S after 6 years, but then my GT4 has held its value very well and hopefully my GT4RS will too, tho Harry says Porsche will make 7,000 of these, which is a lot.
@@alenaalena13 I have every Porsche. Actually I have two of each. Three of some models even.
Harry! Both you and I have now driven the 992 GT3 CS and T together with the Cayman GT4 RS. You have still not driven the GT3K which, as you know, I still consider to be the pick of all GT cars this year. Whilst the GT4RS was intended as a weekend car to blast up the road it is an impossible "daily" due to the induction and engine noise. The GT3K does work as a "daily" adequately with front lift, the capacious cabin allows the luggage void behind the front seats to be accessed and the seats recline to sleep on long road trips too. As you know well, the 992 GT3 suspension is adjustable and if you find the steering too alive then you can adjust the camber to reduce this. All GT products used on the road are much safer and quicker on Pilot Sport 4S and I strongly recommended these.
I value Harry's perspective and would like to see a review on the lightest of the 90s Japanese legends that so many of us love, the RX-7.
Definitely the most engaging Porsche I’ve ever owned- I love the gt4rs
Oh man it sounds so good even through ear buds. I can only imagine what it sounds like from behind the wheel
Harry, you turned the engine on, I turned the sound up. I was not disappointed. Thanks, one again, for a great video.
and the engine warning light
@@apache1234657you realize that every car does that right? It lights up the dash lights and checks all the systems to make sure they’re functional?
Harry's content is simply superb. He understands us mere mortals and what makes us tick.
that sounds flipping good - a car you are alive with and as one.
What a screamer, I want it for the glorious sound alone and hears thinking the days of great sounding cars had long gone
Nothing comes close. It’s the most fun sports car ever. Bar none🏆
That engine sound is addictive. Did you find out why the engine warning light came on?
LOVE THE DASH LAYOUT its unfussy like it shud be but 109 db is louder than concord taking off , if you was working in a factory you would need to wear ear defenders way way to loud
I think I've seen this car in Belfast. Saw a GT3 on the same day. Porsche must do driving days for its customers. When the Taycan launched a baby blue one passed me on the road. Said to myself I'd not see another for a while. 15 minutes later I'd seen five more.
Love Belfast on a Sunday you always see some lovely cars. I was up there today and spotted a Hurrican, GT-R fully speced in white, Gt4c Ferrari and a new 992 Targa. .
That engine sings and it must be very addictive! Great vid.
Harry you've got more kahunas than I have - going down a wet, tree-lined lane revving out 2nd - glorious sound - nice work!
Can't wait for a video on that F50!
11:55 soooo funny watching the car behind disappear in the side mirror as Harry clogged it up the hill! Fantastic!! 😂
Looks awesome. Always hankered after a high performance Cayman. However, due to where we live (French Alps) and the fact that such a car would be my wife’s daily driver, we need AWD for winter use. Now, if they could bring out a Cayman Dakar with AWD and a gentle lift, that would be of great interest. But what a sound.
Great review Harry as always. But what an utterly ridiculous car. Unless you spend every weekend on a track or bragging down the pub what a racer you are this car is absolute torture.
What a marvelous machine!
Thanks for the video Harry.
Thought this was gonna be the first time Harry binned it into a hedge. 😅 be nice to see it in dry warm weather or just with better tires.
Yah I was worried about that too, Harry be safe brother. Proper shoes for the elements is always key.
Wow that honestly sounds not only unique but incredible, not sure how but Porsche just smash it every single time...
Oh My, this is one wild car. So much power and poise.
This with a manual would be one of the only cars I truly want to own from the last 15 years
This is the best sounding car released in a long time. That intake noise gives me M3 CSL feelings!
What a beast, love it, no plugins no electric lawn mower but raw power.
I’m loving the Cayman T that I have, may chop it in for a GT4 in early 2023 and am looking forward to a 992 T on its way. Fabulous though it undoubtedly is and whilst I enjoy my track days, without a manual gearbox, a GT4 RS doesn’t generate a flicker of interest with me. Great review as always, though.
Had a sublime Carrera T a few yrs back. It’s a special car, but this is next level anything. The GT3 is just plain boring in comparison. The GT4RS is the end of the road. Unfortunately
Porsche needs to make say a 718 Cayman R model with the manual perhaps
WOW. Your last few uploads on Porsche's have totally changed my opinion of them. I'm now just trying to decipher the whole range as there's so many different versions. lol.. thanks again.
Harry's sum up matches my feelings. Spot on H!
Best review on this car ever. Thank you Mr. Harry.
Edit: Brilliant as always
I think this is one of the best cars ever made. So complete, loud and serious.
Sounds absolutely fantastic
Fabulous car, fabulous review
Great video. FYI, noticed your suction cup camera mount. If you want to capture the best footage angle I use the RoadSpy RS1 on my Cayman. Way way better than those suction cups.
The 2 lap times are for the different configuration of the lap. Sport Auto and the other which I forget right now but think its full lap.. so the finish is just slightly shorter.
I’ve watched so many videos on this car but this, this is the one!! Everyone knows that this platform is on its deathbed but this GT4RS is without a doubt it’s swan song… quite literally. Great content as ever 🙌🏻
I can't believe how you ratio of view to like is so low. I love your videos. and boy do i want this car.
Great Review… Awesome driving !!! Hats Off!
17:34 Typical VAG product with the engine light on.😂. The bark this engine makes during downshifts is so visceral. As always a lovely review by Harry
Four wheeled heaven for me
Absolutely top three wish list cars now
Harry M is quite the skilled wheelman especially in damp conditions and those cup 2 tyres , and his reviews make Sunday evening worth living 🏴😎👏👏👏
Brilliant review. Feel your pain on those Cup2’s in the rain. But none the less what a weapon of a car.
Yeah. Giving the man a GT4RS on MPSC2's in November is kind of dim. They would get a much better review had it been on Goodyear Supersport which are available. Or just good ole MPS4S.
Beautiful Teutonic bark! Thanks for this Harry👍
Excellent as always Harry
Those door handle straps - they work brilliantly if you do a "Dutch Reach"...
This is pretty much my ideal spec for a GT4RS, and what I like about this car is it's not a limited run vehicle, unlike 911R or the Dakar, and anyone with the cash can order one.
That'll also be the main reason they've stayed with steel construction and only changed the bolt-on bits - it's a production RS, not a more exotic special build.
A what?
@@AB-80X Right, I had replied but because I linked the AA's website in, it looks like TH-cam scrubbed it... typical artificial unintelligence.
Okay, "Dutch Reach" is where you open the door, operate the door handle, with the hand furthest from the door. In Harry's case in this video that would be his left hand. Doing that makes the strap's rear pull action much easier to use.
The Reach makes the driver twist around, helping to see cyclists, pedestrians, etc. and reducing the chance of the door opening into them. It's been taught for maybe 45yrs in the Netherlands and other places, just not here in the UK.
If you have got the cash you can certainly order one and the dealer might take a deposit off you, but it is very unlikely that you will get one - in the UK at least.
The wheels look amazing..I’d be happy with a base manual Carerra..;)
Base model of Porsche sports cars have so much character and capability, that most who buy these cars never reach the potential.
Great review as allways Harry.
Thank you.
Sounds glorious Harry
Love the interior looks almost like a mk2 TT
In the garage my eyes were on the xjc! Thanks Harry👍👍👍
When you think about it, the sticker badge isn’t to save weight, it’s to make you think that Porsche is really trying
Sure someone has probably mentioned it, but with that level of noise internally it will be interesting to see what the standing external test db for circuit use is. I don't think it would get access to all circuits. Just thinking out loud.
Love your high level reviews
I share your thoughts are wrote very similar words, especially about the Cup 2s. Great video, as always! 👏
That looks and feels like my kind of car, usable and able to hear that engine on a good B road. I so want one!
I think yellow is best color for that car, and I don't really like yellow!! Great review, thanks Harry!!
Fantastic car. I reckon its the most I've seen you fight the handling though - blaming the tyres and greasy roads for sure. That and an engine that's getting you to press on!
That induction sound is like e46 M3 CSL and McLaren F1 - glorious!
I had a 2006 Cayman S with a 3.8 conversion after the 3.4 suffered from the dreaded bore scoring. I had the 6 speed which I absolutely loved. I'll get another one, someday. Except this time I want a convertible like the boxter or a 911.
The new Spyder (Boxter) is a terrific car
They really messed up the rear on this. I know many will disagree but it looks hideous. It’s just off. The GT3 is a stunner from the back and I can’t believe Porsche got it wrong. I hope the next Gen they will make it nicer.
Glorious. Great review as always 😎
Very consistent on the uploads Harry, much appreciated ✌️
What a glorious noise!
My fav car. Rather have this over a gt3 rs, not sure why
I do like how most people don’t understand the difference between a spoiler and a wing. Great that people explain it it simple terms
Spent 450km behind the wheel of one of these around Cape Town's finest mountain and coastal roads. One of the best experiences I've had. Better than a GT3, and better sounding than the new GT3RS
God almighty that sound is addictive.
On the road, I’d be happy with any Porsche. The GT4 RS is just a dream.
First, I think the 992 911 wins comfortably in the looks department; otherwise I think the choice depends on purpose - if you want to use it most days, the GT3 Touring, if only Sunday drives and tracking, the GT4 RS.
ps: Harry - I hope that dreaded engine light went out eventually 😬
That light is just there to remind you that you're driving a German car.
Seen the car yesterday at a trackday. Love it. Awesome video
Just the usual brilliance Harry 👍
And what a noise 😊
I think the car you want is the upcoming boxster spyder rs harry. Basically the same car but with a softer more road focused setup and perhaps a manual too, who knows
Glorious sound
Love the sound at 9000 RPM, absolutely glorious, nothing beats naturally aspirated in sound.
You know what? I think I'd have it over the GT3 just for that airbox!
Let's see if it rides better or is any more useable than the GT3 but that's missing the point considering it's a RS product.
(It's also waaaaaaaay prettier than the GT3, no contest)
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve driven both and chose the GT4RS over the GT3 which is just plain dull in comparison to this utter hooligan. The ride is much nicer in the GT4RS and you can actually use it’s sport suspension on real life B-roads around where I live. The noise in the cabin is actually quite tolerable when just cruising in normal settings. The tyre noise is definitely there as in all 2-door Porsches, but after 15 minutes into my 1350km drive home from taking delivery, I chucked the BOSE noise cancelling headset into the passenger footwell and there it remained for the rest of the 2 day long journey. It’s much more old school than the 992 and a completed joy to take out for that spirited drive. You just got to love having no buttons on the steering wheel and not having to change any driving modes except for the gear shifts, suspension and exhaust which are all analog and mechanical adjusting the car’s behavior.
Simply put. The GT4RS is the most fun sports car in production bar none. Yea there are faster cars out there, but speed isn’t what’s important. No other car can compete with the insanity and complete hooliganism of the raucous GT4RS. But you need 3-4 other cars in the garage alongside it. On launch control with cold SC2’s it’s borderline scary at best, and that’s what I want and need from a sports car. About missing the manual gear box, get another car for that Harry, we could all see your hands were full as it were. Musical instrument? It sure is❤
@@Nord_Mann You confirmed all of my suspicions regarding its superiority to the 992+GT3 but what a brilliantly well put synopsis.
It's funny that we reward the lack of adjustment and buttons but I can totally get what you mean, feels like the engineers have done all the work already, encouraging to hear it feels old school.
Too does its complimentary place in one's garage, sounds like a totally unique/special experience which it should (and seems to) actually be delivering in spades as a proper RS and well, as a sports car.
Downright heroic to be actually using as intended, as well!
Enjoy your GT4 RS!
Hope to give one a fair shake myself, one day 😁
@@Nord_Mann You must be the internets no 1 GT4RS fan judging by all your posts. You must be close to have completed your run in, which is supposed to be 3,000 kms, or 1500 minimum, which I dont understand. I am only 800 into my run in and have been keeping it under 4,000 rpm. Perhaps I can go to 5,000 rpm now! Its an epic car.
Harry, the GT4RS is an incredible machine. 😮
I would really appreciate your thoughts on the Cayman T for those of us who haven’t got hundreds of thousands of pounds/dollars/euros for a sports car!
No Cayman t for the moment in the presse fleet of Porsche GB...
Man those conditions made me nervous. Great job keeping that wild beast on the road!
Big fan of the car and the channel, but was anyone else surprised by the closing comments! I kind of expected Harry to prefer it to a GT3 based on everything he'd said, not sure why he didn't!?
Not surprised. The GT3 is the full package. A more usable, complete road car. Arguably also a more rewarding track toy.
Great sound.
The induction noise from the F1 you can feel in your chest from the outside, I'd love you experience it inside one day.
Did Harry say Col de Turini? Rode my bicycle up and down that twice last summer from Nice. Amazing bit of road.
