I spend the weekend with the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS and try to find out if it's worth all the hype.
    From Porsche:
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new flagship model in the 718 family - an uncompromising driver’s car designed to impress with its lightweight construction, extremely agile chassis set-up, sophisticated aerodynamics and unique soundtrack.
Among the striking features of the new, top-of-the-range 718 are the process air intakes behind the driver and passenger windows. The 718 Cayman normally has small side windows here. The new air intakes improve both the intake airflow and, at the same time, create a thrilling intake noise right next to the occupants' ears. The characteristic air intakes in front of the rear wheels have been retained and are used for engine cooling.
Like every modern RS model, the new 718 GT4 RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. The gearshift paddles allow drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel even when changing gear manually. Alternatively, they can use the re-designed selector lever on the centre console.
The unique Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, created by Porsche Design exclusively for buyers of the vehicle, is as dynamic as its four-wheeled counterpart. The watch also benefits from a lightweight design concept with high-performance features based on the robust, high-tech characteristics of titanium. Its winding rotor is modelled on the sports car’s rims and can be specified in different colours, just like the car.

Sam, you really are next level at the moment mate. The content, the topics, the camera angles and quality alone are best on TH-cam but your view of life and how you use and enjoy cars is soo inspiring. I’ve done so many driving holidays the last few years and enjoyed life soo much doing things inspired by you ……. More twiggy ;)

If an RS would be ideal as a daily, we would demand something more hardcore. Let’s keep the RS’es as toys, on and off track.
    Great episode.

I love the subtleness of the GT3 Touring. I never fashioned myself a RS person either. That is until I started driving them. Now I find each of us has a bit of a different threshold for where that Jekyll and Hyde line sits. Although I love the aesthetics of the 911, the small intimate nature and near perfect ergonomic layout of the 718 interior just pulls and reminds you more of the older 911’s than the more bloated, current versions. I’m finding now that one should have a non-RS Porsche, as well as a RS one in the garage at all times. Heck, there are 7 days in a week-perhaps a different one for each day, right?🤦🏻‍♂️

nice in-depth test. Unbelievable, 10 minutes before you went into the sound and the speed range, I had exactly the same thoughts. Incredible, like telepathy. I also feel that the range of the sound is relatively small, and then just before the end of the speed, for a speed window of maybe 500 revolutions, there is a peak in the sound that is really emotional. In my opinion it is also clearly too late, which means that you have to keep accelerating. With the Ferrari 360, for example, it opens from 3-4000 revolutions, which makes more sense for my emotions.

Before watching the video I’m wondering about your angle? Why on earth would you try to daily a GT4RS for a week? I picked up mine Friday and have done the 1500km break in period on Scandinavian B-roads during the last 3 days. Today 9000rpm was
unleashed and my hearing still suffers😂 The GT4RS is an absolute run riot heavy metal band on a leash at all times. The car was invented in 1886 with the Lohner-Porsche, and it ends with the GT4RS as the pinnacle of driving fun. Of course the coming 992GT3RS is faster and a lot more of a technological tour de force as it should be, but that just makes m case, and yours to loose. The Cayman GT4RS will out-fun any car on the planet any time. It’s surprisingly analog and hilariously old school.
BUT, during the 1700kms I’ve been doing since Friday in the GT4RS, so be learnt that the ride comfort is just excellent, and the seats are amazingly comfortable. I can even use the sport setting on the suspension for long durations if so desired. The 3 drawbacks with the car is except price and availability: 1) rear view limited. I could be having a cop trailing me and I wouldn’t know until the siren came on. 2) side view visibility, you need the co-pilot to give thumbs up in tight intersections. 3) tyre noise on bad road surfaces, but this is the same for the 911 also.
Motoring ends with the GT4RS. No need to look further, and compared to the coming GT3RS and Ferraris is actually a bargain!
    Happy days❤

Nice attempt at a contrary point of view. But it’s an RS - I think we knew before your video that if you attempt to measure against criteria for which it was not designed, it might feel compromised. But measure it on great driving roads and on track and it’s epic. So the conclusion for me was obvious before you started. It was never intended as a daily driver nor is that why someone would buy it. Frankly I wouldn’t have a base GT4 as a daily driver either. AP says the 4RS was built as a fun car for road and track and they appear to have nailed that brief. My order is in and I’ll be keeping my X5 for daily driving duties.

I have a ‘22 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in Frozen Berry Metallic (I think there was a GT4 in the same color when you picked up the GT4 RS).
I daily drive her, but every weekend I’m up around 5:45 and take her out for a ride. Quiet roads, no urgency, just me and my car. Amazing

The best thing about being a taste maker is that YOU set the opinion, the opinions and views of others aren't important. In that, just because the mob says a 911 is the top shelf car and the Cayman/Boxster is something less, even if it's not. It's all gate keeping and snobery.

Have to disagree with your viewpoint on this one. I think you are missing the point here. This car was never meant to be an all-rounder and that kind of thinking is perhaps what is spoiling the experience for you. Imagine it as a go-kart that you don't need a trailer for. As for it not being able to topple the 911, the point is that Porsche is giving the customer what they want. If that means creating a car that they know is not going to beat their range-topper then so be it. I believe the two are different and that this is just the ultimate expression of the platform that would not be seen if Porsche were trying to sandbag for the sake of the 911's halo status. My 2c. Great content as always, bad opinion🤣

I’m always asking myself, this or GT3 in manual. 718 has the amazing sound inside, and from what I gather might be better suited for someone that’s not so tall (5’6). Other hand, 992 is well…that and has the manual option. I’ve driven neither, and don’t even know why I bother thinking about this as I’ll never have finds for it lol. Guess I just like to dream. Wish Porsche would lend me a car to drive for the weekend..heck even for a day..

For me I think the GT4.0 with a manual gearbox is the sweet spot. A 4L six in the mid-engine Caman or better yet the Boxster. Better driving car than the 911. A lot less money. Only issue is the tall gears. That can be changed.

I love the “watch the drink” ride quality metric. 😂 Genius.
The “below the 911” bit was a fail. The 4RS is a great car in its own right, and to be discouraged by (a rapidly vanishing) “911 is a better car” elitism is to be a member of it. I have a 718 spyder, and I bow to no other Porsche (except maybe a 918 lol).
I do admit it looks a bit…gimmicky, but to your point. That’s probably just because we’re not used to seeing a cayman in full aero. The 3RS is not any less gimmicky, but we’re just used to seeing them in race settings more, so are used to it, I guess. I’m actually quite bummed the spyder rs looks like it will be stuck with all the same front end aero as the 4RS, which will look even more out of place on that car (not like I could get near one, though).
    Keep the shiny side up

The only problem with the Cayman is that the base model has a 4 cylinder boxer . And everyone that I've heard sounds like absolute crap . A Subaru BRZ also has a 4 cylinder boxer and sounds a million times better than a Cayman . Other than that it's probably a better car than the 911 , simply because it's mid-engine like the 918 and the CGT .

Sorry I don't know your name.
Some context, I'm on my 26th 911 in 46yrs on continuous road and race ownership. I also own horses.
The horses you encountered on the lane should have moved off the road, to your left, onto the rough car passing area rather than remain on the road.
But you increased the risk of an accident by driving much too quickly. The safe speed to pass horses is 5MPH.
Hopefully you and your viewers will remember my advice to prevent damage to your cars and to horses which can be very unpredictable and are easily frightened.
I drive a 992 GT3K now and should be in my GT3RS by Easter. I still race by 1966 SWB in FIA Historic.

What? This sort of tech speak makes no sense to me.
In much the same way that the GT4RS made no sense to you. It's an analogue car which is more open road, less digital and track than one understands from your ad hoc "road test".
Many find that the standard GT4 (without the GT3 engine) is more than enough for them as it's quieter and softer.
You won't like the GT3 as you will find the steering too alive in your hands.
On the roads you drone the RS, a base Cayman would be much quicker as it is so much softer.
The opportunity remains for you to highlight to your viewers how to correctly pass a mounted horse in a narrow confined situation which often worries the rider an de frightens the horse.

Sam I think you may find the 992 gt3 will be just as stiff on small roads. The one to have will be the RS Spyder...all day long the RS 991 is lovely. Tony knows bug all as the Roma is a bit knobby

I really do appreciate the video but I am not sure anybody has said it is the 'perfect' car....some may have said it is the perfect sports car (which I disagree with) but not the perfect car.
Now...back to enjoying the video. Great work Sam and team

Sam you’re the best mate, curious to why you don’t have more subs!!! Maybe you could try doing some more videos with other TH-cams to gain access to new viewers and vice versa.

Enjoyed that! Had a 718 GT4 and just couldn’t get on with it at all. A remarkable machine without a doubt but it was crap on the roads round me for the same reasons you give. Also felt a bit of a prat in it with the wing. Went back to a 911 as its what I had on the wall growing up😎

that is a volcanic roar in that last gasp of the engine - but then.... were not used to 9K these days! Go back in time bit and you'll get plenty of that before the outdated stability tech puts you in a bush haha

Another top video and one in which I recognise the roads! Newbury, Lambourn via Ashdown House, the North Wessex Downs etc.

If you are single or just with someone but no kids this car is a great only car for you. However if you have kids this has to be a second car but it's a great car and fun to drive even daily.

Don’t like it in yellow. It reminds me of the old Lotus Elan which most seemed to be painted the same colour. I always thought it would look like a cool car if it wasn’t bright yellow. I agree, it does look a bit naff and Hot Wheels-esque.

One of the best cars of the year for sure , obviously being an RS is going to be unconfortable in bumpy roads but the car was design to live at the tracks and it must be incredible there . I dont agree with your argument that a cheaper car is always worse ,specially when it comes to lambos , im pretty sure an STO is faster around most tracks than the SVJ same for the Pista and the 812 competizione. In case of the Porsches the GT3 RS is going to be better than the gt4 just cause it has much more techology into it
