I'm going to give you the craziest tip on Zelda. But it is so weird, that I have to explain it, otherwise it makes no sense. First off, understand that all of Link's items are DIRECTIONAL. This means the direction you face when you use an item (including playing the recorder) matters. When it comes to attacks, Link always attacks in one of four directions. Think of it like using the sword (or wand) to stab/attack up, down, left or right. Everyone know that Darknuts are vulnerable on three sides (his left, his right, and his back) but are shielded on the front. The NES figures out whether the Darknut takes damage or not based not only on the direction the Darknut is facing, but also the direction Link is facing. It makes sense. If Link is facing Left when he stabs a Darknut that is facing right, the Darknut doesn't take damage. It's simple. But here's where things get weird. When a bomb explodes, it creates seven puffs of smoke (which, by the way, do not hurt Link in this game, so there's no need to run from your own bombs). These seven puffs of smoke are what attacks enemies, giving the bomb a very large attack footprint. But remember that I said that attacks are directional? Yes, even the seven puffs of smoke attack in one direction, only. Which direction you may ask? They attack in the same direction that Link was facing when he dropped the bomb. For most enemies this is not an issue. But it is important for Darknuts. Let's say Link drops a bomb while he is facing UP. A Darknut walks DOWN and the bomb explodes BEHIND him. Since the smoke is ONLY attacking in an upwards direction (as Link dropped it while facing up) and the Darknut is facing DOWN (which means he is shielded from upwards attacks), he takes no damage. That's right. The Darknut's shield, which he carries in front of him, can protect him from bombs that explode behind his back! And you would never know this. Why? Because the Darknut will flicker like he took damage and even get pushed backwards by the explosion, making you THINK that you are injuring him, but he actually took no damage. I've watched frustrated gamers unload 16 bombs on a Darknut who survived them all. This is why. You have to strategize the DIRECTION you place the bomb.
You know, I knew that the bombs did have a directionality that mattered when facing Darknuts, but I didn't fully grasp all of the interesting corner cases that creates, especially that it looks like the Darknuts take damage, when they haven't. Really interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Just a minor correction but level 3 isn't a swastika, it's actually a manji which is a totally different shape (note the direction of the arms). Most long-term zelda fans probably know that fact, but people who are looking on TH-cam for guides to retro games probably cant tell the difference. You could also go the nintendo power route and call it a pinwheel.
I've always wanted to play this game but have been privately very intimidated by it and games like it. In the 3-trap room in level 6 you can avoid all 3 by just continuing to move forward through them without stopping. Just hold up starting before you enter the room. DONT STOP.
Love the original TLoZ. Something about it just feels so good to play, even just running around and doing nothing in particular. It's very calming to me. Obligatory mention for the sake of clarity that the dungeon is supposed to be a manji, not a swastika. The reason the snakes are called ropes is probably because an old Japanese word for snake is said to derive from their appearance to rotten ropes. Just realized Birdo from SMB2 and Wizrobes have the same attack sound effect.
Thanks! There's are all good facts - very interesting! You're totally right about the Birdo sound effect being the same as the Wizzrobe one - I never noticed that!
Ahhh yes, some of my first memories are of Zelda. I remember making a sword and shield out of wood and proudly plastering my holographic Zelda sticker i got out of a cereal box smack dab in the middle of the shield. I dedicated a corner to the man cave to this series, and with good reason! Timeless classic. Also never beat it until emulation years later lol.
As a kid I made a sword and shield out of construction paper, cardboard and a ton of packing tape. Then I went to the park where sprinklers were setup and used the shield to block the water stream... in my head it was a huge energy blast. Then the maintenance guy saw me and yelled so I ran away. Very heroic way to end that epic battle... :P
Watching all my favorite childhood videos games get beaten is so relaxing. You have a very calming voice too, I've been falling to sleep listening to you. Not that you're boring lol, just very calming and comfy to listen to while laying down.
Your method for clearing areas by avoiding enemies unless necessary is certainly efficient. Watching all those enemies survive and rooms not explored drives me nuts though.
As a speedrunner of this game, it's good to see a video like this that explains a lot of the bomb counts, etc to other people. It can be confusing to most, and I suck at explaining it. But you put together a good video. Keep up the good work!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I wouldn't call myself a "pro" lol. But, there are many things I do in the game that really confuse people. This video can fill them in on a lot of it.
This is the first game I needed a guide to beat, and yet still learning stuff, never knew you could blow the recorder multiple times and do the math, always just went one dungeon at a time, and didn't know facing mattered, great job!
Amazing video. I got this game for Easter 1988 and as a 12 year old it blew my mind. I'm glad for the help the game had, as it's very complex for it's time. The rich detailed manual, the map/guide book included, the coverage in Nintendo Players Club and the Players Guide, the hint book you could order....nowadays when I play the game I do EVERYTHING I can before I even start level 1. You can get just about anything with some time and effort, and then you can just cruise through the rest of the game.
I can't help it. My OCD has always forced me to kill all enemies on a screen especially if they were weak, the Rope snakes in particular...and if a monster dropped an item, I HAD to get it.
I remember once I found the secret in the Northeast corner, I would skip getting the wooden sword at the beginning of a new quest, and buy the candle and bombs. I hope you will do a walk-through of the second quest.
I know this video is two years old but I absolutely watched every single second of it. I play Legend of Zelda all the time on my Switch. Brings back memories of my childhood. So many of these secrets I had forgotten about! Thank you for the BEST walkthrough on this platform!

The Legend of Zelda has now become one of my favorite games that I just played on the Nintendo Switch! Despite having won twice in the first mission, I was (more or less) aware of some of the strategies the game brought us and I remember several puzzles along the way! Thank you very much for your tips and revealed well-hidden secrets that the game brings!
A sincere thank you for putting so much time and effort to create these incredible videos. Well done on all levels, great presentation skills, and perfect editing. It is much appreciated.
When I was a young lad, I played this game for about a full month during summer break and conquered it. This was 93, before the internet was a thing. I didn’t have any help, and it felt so rewarding to finally solve all the puzzles. It was an apex moment of my summer. It was an epic summer, and so that’s saying a lot.
I'm glad I never saw the rapper add you showed, in Montana. I must have spent weeks playing this video game. It was exceedingly fun. Even the game play counselor didn't know that trick about getting into level 7. I wish you'd have been around 35 years ago.
I remember the last thing my dad ever said to me: "I will not speak to you again until you've beaten Legend of Zelda on NES." I feared I may never get to speak to my father again. Now that I have seen this video I can beat Legend of Zelda and reunite with my estranged father.
@@KeavyGoesLive This reminds me of a non-joke story someone told on the internet. A kid was nagging for his father to buy him an expensive current generation gaming system. Finally, the father said, "If you can beat one of my old games, I'll buy you the game system." The kid happily agreed. So the dad got his old NES out of the closet along with his copy of Silver Surfer. He said his kid was still trying to beat it.

1. Leave one enemy on the screen on the Outworld. That way, you won't have to worry about fighting the same number of enemies all over again. 2. The Wallmasters can be stunned all together with the boomerang. After that, kill them to reap in some rupees! 3. The walls to the right of the entrance on Level 2, can be bombed to reached the top of the level. And to get the blue boomerang, as well. 4. The candle (both red, and blue) can be used to kill enemies. The blue one can only be used once per screen, though. 5. The enemies to the right of the warp entrance between Level 1, and 2 give a good amount of rupees if killed by the white sword. 6. The boss of Level 5 can be killed by using the flute first. Then switch to the boomerang, stun it, and finish it with your sword/bomb/arrows/candle. 7. If you leave a strong enemy in a room in a level, and go out the door and come back in, that enemy might sometimes become a weak one. 8. There is win/lose rupees game one screen left of where you start the game from. One of the upper walls needs to be bombed (I forget which one). If you win, save your game. If not, reset it, and try again to rack up rupees early in the game. 9. If there is a controller 2 connected, press Up, and A at the same time to bring up the save menu. 10. Princess Zelda will have on the same color dress Link has, depending on the color of the ring he's using.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames It does. In "LEVEL-8", when I do a "normal" run where I get the magical key (as opposed to a "silly" run where I avoid the magical key and sometimes have 20+ regular keys upon completion instead of A keys), I make sure to leave one blue Darknut alive in the room left of the stairway leading to the 4-headed Gleeok when bombing the wall at the top. Upon retrieving the magical key and backtracking, only one blue Darknut remains. If forced to kill them all to collect health (which sometimes doesn't yield the desired result anyway), the room always refills after returning with the magical key.
Hunh. I've been playing this game since it came out, I know how to block clip, screen scroll, and all that fancy stuff... but I never knew that if you buy a blue potion while you already have a blue potion that it'd become a red potion.
Zelda is so awesome, it was absolutely mind blowing as a kid
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Absolutely! It filled my heart and mind with a sense of exploration and adventure. Way ahead of its time for sure.
:P
It was an honor sharing my first playthrough of “The Legend of Zelda” with you, looking forward to the next one in the “Adventure of Link”
You sir are a master of nostalgia! Best binge watching channel. P.s. the doggo opening is so adorable
Thanks! He's a really good boy!
1:40 you said Ocarnia instead of Ocarina and I found it kinda funny
Watching all my favorite childhood videos games get beaten is so relaxing. You have a very calming voice too, I've been falling to sleep listening to you. Not that you're boring lol, just very calming and comfy to listen to while laying down.
This channel is the ASMR of retro gaming.
@@EugeneAxe it really is
Your method for clearing areas by avoiding enemies unless necessary is certainly efficient. Watching all those enemies survive and rooms not explored drives me nuts though.
Thank you so much for this video. I finally beat it 100% with all secrets found.
The magical rod was always my favorite item. Link can also strike enemies with the rod itself for the same damage as the white sword.
This guys doing the Lord's work LOL. Watching these videos makes me feel so warm inside great memories
Thank you so much, Joseph!
This is easily becoming my favorite channel on YT. I feel like a kid again watching you play these games.
The Gerudo theme has always been my favorite 😻
Its easily in my top 20 video game songs of all time. Thanks for watching, Nick!
As a speedrunner of this game, it's good to see a video like this that explains a lot of the bomb counts, etc to other people. It can be confusing to most, and I suck at explaining it. But you put together a good video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man! That's awesome to hear from someone who is a real pro at this game!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I wouldn't call myself a "pro" lol. But, there are many things I do in the game that really confuse people. This video can fill them in on a lot of it.
@@SassageLink83 Thanks, man! Feel free to tell your friends about it!
This is my new favorite TH-cam channel!!!
That dude rapping actually said "wickey-wickey-wick", I'm guessing an actual turn table wasn't in the budget...making it priceless
That commercial is so hilariously bad! Thanks, Joshua!
I still remember it from seeing it on TV all the time. That's the part that sticks out in my head from back then.
I've been playing since I was practically a toddler, beating the game recently (I'm almost 17 now) was so rewarding!!!
This is the first game I needed a guide to beat, and yet still learning stuff, never knew you could blow the recorder multiple times and do the math, always just went one dungeon at a time, and didn't know facing mattered, great job!
Thanks, Steve! I always kinda thought the recorder just took me to random places before I found out about that trick.
Pretty sure if u tap 1 through 8 on right of the d pad it'll take you to the selected dungeon hope that makes sense
I feel you, man! Don't want to just waste an easy opportunity to kill some enemies or pick up some items.
Them ropes be dropping them blue rubies out the ass. But i feel you i be wanting to kill, kill, kill 😂
I can relate. I was going crazy with how many unexplored rooms there were. If I leave a dungeon with extra keys, then I feel like I missed something.
I Like Like the dog you use for your picture
I remember once I found the secret in the Northeast corner, I would skip getting the wooden sword at the beginning of a new quest, and buy the candle and bombs.
I hope you will do a walk-through of the second quest.
I know this video is two years old but I absolutely watched every single second of it. I play Legend of Zelda all the time on my Switch. Brings back memories of my childhood. So many of these secrets I had forgotten about! Thank you for the BEST walkthrough on this platform!
Also, level 3 isn't a swastika. It's called a manji in Japan. It's a Buddhist religious symbol.
I know, they had the manji long before World War 2. Still, it looks like what it looks like.
Invert it and it’s a swastika. The nazi were smart enough not to us the manji symbol
Not only that but the Apache and Cherokee peoples use the symbol to indicate the four wind directions
1:42 I have NEVER heard “Ocarina” pronounced like that: that’s certainly new for me. XD
This is the second video I have watched of yours and I find it soothing and informative at the same time. Despite your Ohcarnia, you deserve a like and a sub lol.
Thanks for the sub, greyfox! I've been saying it wrong my entire life, but I won't say it wrong in future videos! I'm sure its only a matter of time before I mention it again.
Watching this it's surprising how much I still remember about this game, and yet there was still some stuff to discover in it. Thank you!
you deserve more views, quality work bro
Thanks, man! Tell your friends!
I didn't really want to watch the walkthrough but, the whole introduction you do up to that point is amazing! Love the history of the games you show. Great work.
The “O-CARNIA” of time. Nailed it.
I know right. Did someone copyright the word ocarina and that is how to get around it lol.
Does anyone else replay the intro of his videos to see the dog over and over again??? Great new channel
He is the Bob Ross of gaming. I get to watch a master at his craft as well as get transported to my happy place at the same time.
Thanks, Andrew! I love the title of "The Bob Ross of Gaming" - Bob was always so cool.
Been binging this channel the last few days, please do A link to the past. Great channel!
Best game channel in 2021.
@1:42 Woo! Go Zelda: The oh-carnia of time!
I'm glad I never saw the rapper add you showed, in Montana. I must have spent weeks playing this video game. It was exceedingly fun. Even the game play counselor didn't know that trick about getting into level 7. I wish you'd have been around 35 years ago.
That ad may have been bad enough to make people NOT want to buy the game! Thanks, Roger!
I remember the last thing my dad ever said to me: "I will not speak to you again until you've beaten Legend of Zelda on NES." I feared I may never get to speak to my father again. Now that I have seen this video I can beat Legend of Zelda and reunite with my estranged father.
I laughed out loud at this, and then I thought, "what if it wasn't a joke?" So I apologize for laughing if you were serious.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames it’s a lame joke but I do genuinely thank you for your walkthroughs.
@@KeavyGoesLive This reminds me of a non-joke story someone told on the internet.
A kid was nagging for his father to buy him an expensive current generation gaming system. Finally, the father said, "If you can beat one of my old games, I'll buy you the game system."
The kid happily agreed. So the dad got his old NES out of the closet along with his copy of Silver Surfer. He said his kid was still trying to beat it.
Oh man, Silver Surfer might be harder than Battletoads!
@@featherpony should’ve put In Marble Madness. Out of all the NES games I have in my collection, and I have hundreds, Marble Madness might be the hardest game I’ve ever played in my life.

At 9:01 is that a golden retriever, retrieving a golden cartridge? Such a terrible pun I would have done it too. Also you do a great job on the commentary. It is smooth, fact-filled yet not dull or exaggerated. Wonderful balance sir.
🤣🤣🤣 It IS a Golden Retriever retrieving a golden cartridge!

This is just the type of channel i didn’t know i needed in my life. As an adult i don’t have the time or patience to play thorough a game several times to work out where all the hidden stuff is. So this channel is perfect for that
How about a deep dive on the 2nd quest? That one always gave me trouble. Well done btw.👍🤘
Thanks, Mikey! I will probably get back for the second quest at some point, its definitely a good bit different!

@@UCanBeatVideoGames you have no idea how excited I am for the video today.
First time ever beating the game, thanks to you! Very much appreciated!

This was my first Nintendo Game. It's beautiful and intertained. Thanks u for this guiline.
This guy's voice be like Bob Ross. "And now Ganon's about to have a happy little accident...'
🤣🤣🤣
i thought Arcus was bob ross tho
Exactly the same thought I had. This is the calmest and most relaxing video game walk-through I think I've ever watched. And it was awesome.
I always thought he sounded more like John Wayne. Especially during his initial introductory spiel at the beginning of each video. I keep waiting for him to say "pilgrim".
Happy little bacon, right there…
This is the 1st time I've heard that commercial, and I'm glad it was now that I'm 73 and can have a good reason for thinking it stinks.
Great presentation my friend, you just earned a new sub. Endless replay value with this game
I have such great memories of this game. I played it nonstop for years.
The problem with the step ladder. It isn't your REAL ladder.
🤣🤣🤣
...Man, why you gotta rub it in? :/
LADDY WHERE ARE YOUUUUUUUUUU
Thank you so much. I finally beat this game after first playing it as a kid in the 90’s.
I had tried off/on over the years, but heard it was so hard/cryptic (and translation so bad), that you needed a guide.
Found your channel and you helped me beat it. I’m so glad, thanks for the help.
Hope the pup is doing well.
Good tips! I think leaving 1 enemy around works in dungeons, too!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames
It does.
Congratulations, you managed to teach me something new about my favorite game.
*starts game*
"Okay now, the first thing you want to do is enter this cave and grab this wooden sword for free."
*two minutes later*
"Okay, it's time to upgrade that sword..."
I remember playing this game in the early 90s. I could never figure out how to get past all the creatures and dungeons. Thanks for bringing me through my childhood with all your classic game plays.
Never knew that blue plus blue equaled red. Thanks Zelda!
Yeah, I guess it sort of makes sense 🤣
This is probably THE best videogame walk-through channels on TH-cam, and one of the best videogame channels period.
Also, what about the second quest?
I do hope to get back to this game some day!
I'll second that (pun intended)
I'd very much Iike to see the master quest done as well. Hope you find the time.
This game takes me back. With this video, I finally beat this game 30 years after I first played it as a kid. Thank again You Can Beat Video Games.
The game has a second more difficult setting, I want to learn to beat that version!
It's not really a more difficult "setting", they made all new levels and a redesigned overworld! I'll probably get to it eventually.
I could never get into level 5 on the second quest as a kid, haven't played it as an adult though might do better now
@@UCanBeatVideoGames First of all, I love your channel! Especially your dog, what's his name? When I was a kid I thought it would be cool to go with Zelda as my first go around. I beat the game and never knew there was another quest to play. Years later I randomly put in a name and lo-and-behold things were in different places. Such a great game. Thank you for explaining it!
You get a slightly different cheesy ending when you beat the second quest.
@@doctorx0079 is it so cheesy that it's gouda? Ba dum cha lol
Thank you. Just followed along on my Switch Lite and beat this for the first time. Reclaiming my childhood one game at a time.
Do you have a walkthrough for the second quest, where you type in "Zelda" in the profile select screen?
Not yet, although we may get these eventually. Funny story - as a kid I knew about that Zelda name trick, but I didn't really understand what the second Quest was, so I ended up beating the 2nd Quest before the first one.
Honestly, first quest seemed super easy after beating the 2nd. I had a LOT of trouble beating the Gleeok in Level 2 because I didn't know where to find enough Heart Containers to have the White Sword by then.
I absolutely would love to see a second quest walkthrough from this channel.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Wow, beating the second quest as a kid, that's no easy feat. I couldn't beat the 2nd until many years later, and I had to look up damn near everything in order to advance.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames That's the one I came here to hear about. Never beat the hard difficulty just the normal one. So sadly this guide didn't help me and I look forward to the Zelda difficulty one.
I’m totally addicted to this channel, so much nostalgia. You are replaying my childhood one video at a time. Can’t believe I just beat this game in under two hours, even with my dads hand drawn graph paper players guide when I was 10 it took me forever but I was limited to one fairy pond per day. Our Nintendo wasn’t for the kids. And was only like a reward. Only when I got into high school and my friends would loan me n64 games, did I get to play on a regular basis.
I always, as a rule, every time I play this, get the blue ring and white sword before I even start level 1. Lol
That's the way for sure!

The second quest is on my list of possible episodes. As a kid, I read that putting your name in as "Zelda" would start you on the 2nd Quest.
