What if instead of being called Nando V Movies, he was called Freaky V Movies? And instead of writing comic book movie scripts for DC and Marvel, he just got REAAAAAL Freaky with us?
Definitely!!! I've been dying for a Zatanna... anything. The idea of a superhero that uses stage magic performances and items is so cool. There's an entire mythos created amongst elite magicians that Z could face, along with the adventures she dealt with in the comics. * Sees casting * Uh, yeah no. How about Emanuela Postacchini - a 33-year-old Italian Actress. Perfect age, appearance, and has a charm to her. Or how about Deniz Baysal - a 33-year-old Turkish actress, which would be a nod to her mother's heritage. Just someone who actually looks like Zatana.
THE BIG QUESTION: would they have her pronounce words spelled backwards? -or have her audio of her speaking reversed? I think the reversed audio would be more weird and and other worldly
She was on Smallville, you know. Had her pronounce the words backwards, which is comic accurate, but just sounds like gibberish to an audience. In the animated movies, it's pronounced backward, but with the appropriate backwards breath innotations, if that makes sense - instead of the breath exhaled at the start of the word, it sounds like the breath is exhaled at its end, which sounded much more 'magical' to me.
With the release of Terrifier 3, I think Lauren Lavera would be perfect for Zatanna. I fully believe that if James Gunn does anything with the JLD corner of DC, the actors and actress who would play those characters HAS to have some horror experience.
Nah, I want to see full on Italians in these roles. I want to see some positive representation of Italian Americians in a DC show/movie, mostly we only see Italians as mafioso in Batman stuff.
So, the elephant in the room: is Zatanna's spellcasting just vocally flipped, Missy Elliot style, or does she enunciate the words as though they were spelled backward in English?
In most media, Including the comic books where she comes from, She enunciates the words backwards. Only very rarely are the words reversed with an editing trick. IMO, editing the words in reverse sounds wrong. And it takes away the fun of trying to figure out what she's incanting.
I hope it would be part of the magic system that they have to be enunciated as if it was coming out in reversed audio, hence flipping the nymic to get behind it's true meaning, otherwise there's no spiritual-physical linking. The actor would have a difficult task ahead of them to build the skill to do that but it would be so sick. And then when as Zatana taps into her inherent talent, reversed audio can be put on top of it to really send it into the "woah she's inhumanly skilled at that" realm.
Warner already has the blueprint for a magical show in which the unknown itself is a job: Supernatural. A Zatanna show is just right there for them for the taking
Honestly i believe a zatanna show reminiscent of Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face woulf work very very well. Shes on the road the entire time but ends the show in Vegas where she settles. She can face many of the weirder magical villains of the DCU on the road, and she can have a stop in Gotham for some little cameos or in a certain major city for the Constantine-Zatara storyline. Would work very well and would be very different than the rest of superhero media where they're already settled in one or two locations for the entire duration of the show/movie.
I’ve wanted a Zatanna show or film for years now she stands out so much from all the other usual characters we have in superhero media (and not just because of her outfit but oh wow her outfit is a requirement from the heels to the fishnets to the top hat) and yet could easily cross over with so many people. Batman in particular (I was first introduced to Zatanna in BTAS) would be great he could be an old flame and even a mentor of sorts helping her come to terms with her father’s death as something he strongly relates to. Her power set is so unique it is a tragedy we haven’t seen more of her in the DCAU or DCEU so hopefully that is something Gunn can change
I totally agree I mean a magic dc series would be a great way to introduce a lot of mystical characters but using zatanna. As the main is a very great idea
1. Ainsley Seiger As Zatanna (Introduce Her In A DCU Showcase. This Would Be DC's Live Action Counterpart To Marvel's Special Presentations) 2. Franco Nero As Zatara
If anyone is looking for another Zatanna read I recommend the one on WebToon right now called “Zatanna and the Ripper” Zatanna is teleported by her father to hide from a mysterious sorceress from modern day to 1888 London and has to figure what supernatural connection she has to Jack the Ripper
@11:08: If you need any other proof that setting a series in a non-generic city elevates the material, look at what Marvel did with the criminal underrated _Cloak & Dagger_ by transposing it into New Orleans.
I love Justice League Dark and the Sentinels of Magic. The whole magic side of the DCU is so fascinating and feels very distinct compared to the Marvel side. I highly recommend Young Justice season 4 for any Zatanna fans
when you were comparing her to characters from other show, you went on to list all my favourite tv shows (fleabag, CxG, buffy). didn’t realise i had a type ☠️
I agree, we need a Zatanna thing, whether it be a movie or show or whatever, though probably a show. Very easy tie in with Swamp Thing or Batman, both of who we already know are on their way. Zazie Beetz as Zatana would be a lot of fun, I've not seen much of her outside of Deadpool 2, Joker 1, and Invincible, but just from those roles I can tell that she'd be a lot of fun as Zatanna and would probably have a lot of fun with the role as well. Also, Giancarlo in anything is always a plus.
I think it’d be very interesting if in this hypothetical situation they made it so there is subtitles or otherwise visuals for the spells she uses that makes understanding what she’s said backwards both more understandable and more of a stylistic choice.
I know the odds of people reprising roles are slim to none, but I really think that we should give Pierce Brosnan another shot at Fate. Such perfect casting should not be limited to that one movie.
One name I've heard thrown around for Zatanna is Nicole Maines. Sure, she's already got a DC character under her belt. One that was created for her even. But I'm not against it.
One thing I love about DC:s magic cast is that they are closer connected to DC:s horror themes and darker storylines. I think going in the horror direction is one of the best way to keep superhero movies feeling fresh(ish) for a while longer. And DC has an extra strong opportunity since Marvel seems to have tried and chickened out on that path.
Zatanna is one of the most underrated superheroes out there, she needs a movie or tv series. I love the castings choice but I also would recommend Camila Mendes as Zatanna, she really looks like her and also I think has the chops to play a complex character. But Zazie Beetz is an inspired choice, and so is Giancarlo Esposito as Giovanni. I would really love for her to be a founding member of the Justice League in the DCU and important going forward.
Zatanna is one of my favourite female comic book characters and such cool and lovable character who is both beautiful and powerful. Zatanna really does deserve her own project in the DCU and has so much potential to be the member of the Justice League who can deal wirh magical threats and allow for natural build up to other magical characters like Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Dr Fate etc.... and establish Justice League Dark Division. I love Zatanna and I hope James Gunn sees this because she such a great character to be member of the Justice League in the DCU. Personally my fancasting for Zatanna is Ella Purnell (recently starred in the Fallout tv series and she was excellent in that show)🎩✨🪄🔮🐇
Yes, fund it. I have always loved Zatanna. edit: I want her iconic look though, took way too long for heroes on film to get there, and the MCU has largely strayed away from it compared to the early days it seems.
while this is not a Constantine pitch i would LOVE for him to be set up kinda like Dante from Devil May Cry where he lives in a rundown building taking contracts where he can
Im writing a fan comic of Zatanna rn. Its a cosmic horror comic inspired alot by the Truman show and Junji Itos stories. The character in my pfp is not her but based off of Zatanna and Gambit. Arcana uses magical tarrot cards and isnt really that big of a character in the series im writing her in.
If Zatanna got a show under Gunn I have a very strong feeling Shade the Changing Man (or his successor Loma) would make an appearance. The exact kind of "... who?" character Gunn loves playing with, and since their power is literally causing and manipulating *human insanity itself*, the easy pitch for the episode is "Twin Peaks, but superheroes". (Shade was on the JLD for a few issues back when his kind-of creator/reimaginer Peter Milligan took over the book for the New 52, and Shade has a history with Constantine.) Even if the Changing Man never appeared, Hotel Shade would be a fun locale for the setting.
I just need to see if he messes up superman or gets it right before I can get hyped about any other dcu content.. there’s so much riding on the fate of that movie
Real hellblazer fans know that the Keanu movie is the closest we’ve ever gotten. Constantine doesn’t need to be blond or British, as long as he smokes and hates himself just right.
You've convinced me Zatanna needs her own show, but I fear what general audiences would do once they found out she could wipe people’s minds with ease. Sure it’s displayed as a morally incorrect move to use against anyone, which it should because altering someone’s mind is inhumane, but if people have a problem with Flash choosing rehabilitation over punishment then I how many are going to state she *should* take that path?
Probably the same amount of people who saw the X-ecutioner rant from 97 and said "I agree, actually." It's not vocal enough to make a difference, and it's not gonna take away from the story they want to tell or the impact it'll have in said story, regardless of what those people may think. Plus (and maybe it's just me, someone who doesn't have twitter anymore), but I don't think there's gonna be THAT many crazy people advocating for something that's clearly being portrayed as a bad thing to do. Okay, but since it’s DC, it might not take place in actual Las Vegas. Instead it would take place in a fictional, pseudo-Vegas with a name like “Casino City”.
I love Giancarlo Esposito but why go for and Italian-American instead of an actual Italian? Pierfrancesco Favino would be my pick for Zatara. I don't hate Zazie Beetz for Zatanna but i'd have to go with Ana de Armas or if we stick Italian Benedetta Porcaroli. Bring down the House has been great so far, really looking forward to seeing where it goes.
What's funny about this is there is greater 1% chance of James Gunn to not only see and watch this but also reference it directly
Yes, 100%. Zatanna is my number 1 DC hero and I want to see her in everything.
What if instead of being called Nando V Movies, he was called Freaky V Movies? And instead of writing comic book movie scripts for DC and Marvel, he just got REAAAAAL Freaky with us?

Hm
This is a quality comment

This comment is wild and is so unnecessary 🦅
my word you have 100% put me on board on the hype train for a possible Zatana project, WOW.
James Gunn said season two of Peacemaker leans into magic… Maybe she’ll pop up, that would be dope
If they cast it right she'll be charming and hilarious and so badass. Also hot, obviously.
Would make sense for Circe to pop up since she is popping up in Creature Commandos
Genuinely underrated and awesome character, plus with a Zatanna and Swamp Thing project the door would be wide open for JLD
Giancarlo Esposito as Zatara is one of those things that has been at the back of my head forever.
Dude would be perfect
Only if they bring back Matt Ryan as John Constantine.
Giancarlo Esposito was the first name that came to mind
mans has RANGE
Also, if you set it in Vegas, you can have dozens of wizards pondering The Orb.
Definitely!!! I've been dying for a Zatanna... anything.

They do both in the comics btw, sometimes they spell words backwards, and sometimes they flip the word balloons or mirror them

HA. Lauren Lavera sounds like a stage name for a magician already!
whoa! great casting
I don’t know that I’ve ever been this on-board with your pitch-and I often AM on-board with your pitches. Zazie Beetz Zatanna when?

Not through editing. Have the actress learn to say the words as if they were reversed.

Nando needs to see Dan Murrell’s correct pronunciation of Giancarlo Esposito
Warner already has the blueprint for a magical show in which the unknown itself is a job: Supernatural.
A Zatanna show is just right there for them for the taking
If marvel can give Agatha a show so should dc give one to zatana and i hope its animated
Zatana is the wonderwoman of JLD. Constantine is Magic Batman. I am surprised that Shazam isn't JLD supes though.

Zatanna vs skinwalkers
I would easily sacrifice every comic book I own for zatanna to get the respect she deserves
A lot of times it seems like James is just obsessed with Batman and Superman, and every other superhero goes to the sideline
