Life inside a maximum-security juvenile prison can be a mix of anxiety and boredom. In this cellblock interview, three teenagers talk about what life is like inside, what they do to spend the days behind bars, and what their lives were like on the outside. The boys talk about everything from gangs to school to what landed them in prison in the first place. As they spend their time on a unit specifically designed to teach rival gang members to live side-by-side with each other, the teens explain that the reality of renouncing a gang isn't as easy as some might think.

True, when the guy asked the question: “Do you feel bad about the people you hurt?” And the guy in the middle started to say that he does, but the other guy on the left said “not really” then boy in the middle immediately switched his thoughts up, he is just easily influenced by others decisions or approval

Can't imagine what kind of childhood they had. Their way of thinking is like that of survival but in a more primal sense. They will end up going in and out of prison their whole life. What a tragedy! I hope they find someone who can inspire them and teach them responsibility of what life and living is...

Kid in the middle really has a heart, for some reason he feels like he cant let his friend see him for he really is. It's sad, he could really be somebody but he's doing all this and acting this was to impress people etc etc. I hope all of them stay out of adult prison.

He was definitely the quiet one...thinking more deeply about where he was and what he wanted ahead. It's not unusual for teens to show some bravado when they're locked up. But over time, we usually see them settle down and start to figure things out. It's definitely a roller coast of emotions inside. Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it!

We see a lot of programs come and go. Some work better than others, for sure. We're glad we have an archive full of content to juxtapose what things have been like over the years. At the end of the day, kids are kids, and after 20+ years of doing this work, the interviews we do don't seem to change too much. The teenage brain is an impulsive one and doesn't fully develop until well into the 20s. We're glad medical research is now catching up with what we've been documenting for so long and policy shifts are taking effect. Still a long way to go...which is why we'll keep doing what we do! Thanks @Eric S!

Although my first year was spent actin a fool and getting beat up by the guards I spent the 2nd year running the kitchen, doing justice, and developing my character. several guards were fired while we were there several were under fire for that shit. Difference between UK and US gang banging, is the US prison system is far more worse and the only people that can back you up sometimes is your gang. That’s why you see old heads still reppin bc if anything were to ever happen to them on the streets or system they have people who can help retaliate, as usually people live in the same hood/ dangerous environment for the rest of their lives

It's sad to hear these kids saying the same things my ,"friends " and I were saying back in the 90s! It's sad because we were a threesome involved with a much larger group. We spent our youthful years in constant turmoil and fear. I'm one of the only ones still alive and doing okay. I'm also one of two of us that moved away from the hood, which expands your opportunities, if you don't move into an area where the same things are happening as your hometown. I was lucky to have an opportunity to leave the hood immediately after I was released from a lengthy incarceration. When I was in the hood, I saw no other way and therefore, I never knew there was another way to get out! Not to mention, the police that harassed us starting at a single digit age, for simple things like playing baseball in an empty lot or football in the street. They treated us bad as kids...When we were teenagers in the 90s, they would wait outside our homes and follow us around until we were somewhere they could pull us over and take us somewhere to beat us, which just made us feel that much more like bad people! People who had no worth because we are taught to trust police and if they are beating you they must have a reason and it must've been my fault. Anyways, in 2015, I came home. I moved away and I haven't had an interaction with law enforcement that I didn't initiate since! That is saying something... As a matter of fact, I rarely see the police in my neighborhood! It's crazy how thirty years have passed and the situation for these young people hasn't changed a bit! The rest of the world is moving on and leaving these kids, who eventually become adults, to feel as if they have no options besides rapping or sports to get out of the hood. There is so much more out here in this world! These kids just don't know that...

@serialshagster6651 - very powerful words. Thanks for sharing your own story and proving change is possible. Many kids see little hope or opportunity, and that can be the most life altering feeling of all. We always hope for the best, and hope that kids will be able to emerge from their past like you did. Thank you again for watching and commenting.

Come on guys, life is too short and if you get caught doing bad stuff you have to hassle with the law forever. You know I seen this young guy get a sentence of life, and I’m thinking no marriage or family of his own never get a home of his own. It’s sad. I know the problems are way deeper than just stop but you know you could move out of the neighborhood and get away from it all.
