- In this look back at 4 different cases involving teens Charles, Delena, Colt and Miles, we see kids who were arrested and sent to detention and prison, and find out exactly how things turned out for the kids over a decade after we first filmed them after arrest and lockup. Some of the teens went on to exceed their own expectations after time behind bars and continue to do extremely well today. Others took a more shocking path and wound up with a sentence of life in prison after juvenile prison officials and those involved in their case thought for sure they were on the right path before release.

I wish they talked about how hard it is for them to readjust to society once they are out. The resources available upon release really do make a big difference. No real support is a sentence waiting to happen.
@misskys1 - You are very right. Re-entry is a huge issue and we will be covering that a lot more in the future. Support, hope and opportunity are all key. It was sad to hear Charles was back in prison, but when you are released back to the same area and friends this is what happens. I feel sorry for the family who loss a loved one and my Prayers go out to them. As for Charles he took a life so he gave his life. Fair exchange is no robbery. Just justice!

Words are cheap and easy, actions take effort and commitment. Unfortunately Charles was doomed for failure from the second he was born because of hundreds of factors that would of required him to excel and rise above them in order to succeed. Really sad in this day and age.
I was so invested in Colt and Miles’ stories. I’m so glad they got out and are doing great things.

Colt and Miles transformation into productive, intelligent young men. Made my heart have faith that some good comes out of a broken system.
I think its because he had a history of arrest prior to that and after he was caught there was also another robbery that had his handprints so he was charged for two robberies one from the drug dealer the other from a separate event@@dawnkeener9836

He DID want to change. But keep in mind the racial atmosphere 25 years ago in Indiana. This system is Really designed to keep people of color down. The whole damn constitution needs an over haul. We are working on laws and bi laws that were created 300 years ago. 300 years ago...the constitution was written with no regard to people of different race, religion, or creed. How can rules and laws written 300 years ago.... Legally still apply.... One love to all people who've been railroaded by a system that was stacked against you from the beginning.

My aunt worked for a judge for 20-plus years. She always told me the reason most of these kids go back to prison is because they're not rehabilitated. They sat behind bars and absolutely learned nothing. no education, no training, no skills, communication, absolutely nothing. So when they are released, they still have the same mentality as they did when they went in. It's almost like a setup. How do you let them re-enter society and they're not prepared for it? Qualified inmates should be equipped with the necessary skills so that when they go back into society they are able to communicate and be productive citizens. Some state prisons only set you up to return and be a slave.
@enzigenes - you bring up a very valid issue regarding re-entry to society. The vast majority of prisoners WILL get out some day. The question is, what type of person do we want when they do -- a person who has spent that time bettering him/herself with education, programs and counseling, or a person who (as you say) has not had any services whatsoever behind bars. When punishment is the only option and goal, we're missing a much bigger picture. We appreciate you watching and commenting!
@@CalamariProductions Without the proper immplement programs it is very hard. I am speaking about inmates who deserve a second chance. There are some who deserve that second chance at making it right. Then again, there are some who don't deserve a second chance.
I worked in the prison system for a lengthy period and on my first day on the job I noticed something; a big majority of inmates have mental health illnesses. The government tackled the pandemic well, but is not doing much for psychosocial disabilities.
@@CalamariProductionsthe problem comes from the American prison system being more about making money than rehabilitation. Private prisons make money for every prisoner they house. I remember seeing a video of a prisons staff team on strike because the prison didn't have enough inmates
Man stop it the kids or adults got to wanna make a real change first. I know a lot of hard heads that did 10 plus come home and been model citizens since their release. There ae stuff in prison for them to learn but like i said that person has got to want to really change

Charles was doomed from the start 😩 As black mothers we gotta start realizing that active and present fathers are just as important as us mothers are to our children. ESPECIALLY to our little black boys. He needed a man to show him what being a man is and looks like. No kid should have to or even think about robbing or selling drugs to eat. A present, active father would have provided support for him and his mom. Bringing back a healthy family structure is going to be vital to rebuilding the black community. We absolutely have to be more thoughtful about who we decide to procreate with ❤
2 parent homes are so important. Kids need both.
I’m sure his mom would’ve loved for his dad to be an active father and good role model, I think everyone realizes how important that is . We honestly don’t even know what the situation was with dad for all we know he was in jail too. Whether mom and dad are together or not too many black fathers have decided not to be active in their kids lives. I hate that the narrative is always black women need to do better when it’s the men dropping the ball, and black women and their children are the victims

I like that they put Miles and Colton in the same cell asay from adults who would have taken advantage of them both.
While I half expected to hear that Charles had re-offended, I was not expecting to hear that he was convicted of murder and copped a 147 year bid. Such a waste, the people that tried to help him. Hell, I was rooting for the guy too.
@ozymandias7940 - everyone was shocked...even the staff at the prison who really felt like he would make it. Sad ending all the way around.
Amazing how easily fooled some people are, when it prison you've got all the time in the world, boredom sets in so you learn, you get educated, you do what you need to do to get out, for most the goal is freedom and if it means doing something you don't really want to do but might lead to an earlier release you do it.
You've nothing else to do with your time.
There's killers in jail that'll 'll teach other inmates, study the bible, offer help to everyone, be a model prison for 10, 15 years, impress everyone including the parole board.
Get released and almost immediately seek a bloody revenge.

He told his mom to carry the box. WOW. My son's 12. He quickly snatches bags out of the trunk so I won't carry a lot and puts them away. He lifts anything heavy for us girls. Things his dad taught him. Dads, be a part of your sons' lives.

I can tell he doesn't really respect her. I sense that she had him early in life and failed him in many ways. She's already looking for her 18 year old son to "take care" of her fresh out of prison. He was doomed from the start, but I doubt anything changed once he got home.

You can tell by Charles mother that she has taught him absolutely nothing and it was almost like she couldn’t wait for him to to go back talking bout its gone be unusual to have him home this is sad that this is who some of our people CHOOSE to be!!!!
Not many feel and know the meaning of love anymore. This just so happens to be one of many cases to prove it.

This Judge is a a very special judge. She wants to see everyone succeed this young woman needs to get her life together and focus on her son. She says she loves her son but actions speak louder than words. This woman took you into her heart and her home and what do you do? You steal from her!! And cry and want sympathy!! I don’t feel sorry for you I feel sorry for that beautiful little boy and your mom!!
Judge Taliaferro was a remarkable woman. Many kids and families later thanked her for changing their lives. Sadly, she recently passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers.
We are happy to report that DeLena has worked hard to turn her life around and has done very well since the time of this filming. On another sad note, her second son, Sage, died in an accidental gun incident over a year ago. Tragic, all the way around.

I hate that kids get mixed up in that type of life. I had a friend that was always getting into trouble. She made sure not to get me into that trouble, but she was just self-destructive. My mom worked with Juveniles and she would always tell them that if you are trying to change your life then you have to change your circle. Do your best to toss out the toxic people, so you don't get sucked back in.
DeLena. Her mom failed her. 22?! It's already slightly uncomfortable if he was 16, but 22?! That's a predator.
I'm glad Colt and Miles got out and did is doing well. I always feel that people who turn their lives around should mentor the youth because they lived their life. It's easier to take advice from someone that has been where you are now.

These young people face the same pressures and same influences when they leave the system; Its not surprising that some of them turn to crime. Its heartbreaking, because if they had supports in place outside it might help them (some of them it won't matter what you do - but some of them it seems like they face overwhelming odds to re-offend
They just did the programs to get out. They will do anything to get out. I went to juvenile and group homes because of my mom not wanting me after I stole candy from a store at 13 1/2 5 months from being 14. I ended up going to 3 group homes and completing the programs for almost 4 years and she still didn't want me. At home my sister at 3 was being MOLESTED by my mother's boyfriend id come home on weekend trips and my sister told me so I told my mom a d she said I was causing problems. Finally my mom took my baby sister to hospital and it turns out was right. I told my counselor at the group home a d they called cps on my mom s d that's the only reason she took my baby sister. I got out on my 18th birthday and still wasn't wanted. 30 years past and I begged to be in her life. My sister left my mom and her husband that raised my sister to our father's at 12 years old. I'm 13 years older than my sister she was born on October 11, 1984 and I was born October 28,1971. Now that my mom is 70 she is begging me to be in her life. All this time of not feeling wanted or even loved. No birthday party or friends over no taking me out to pick out clothes for school. No feeling that I belonged. I got on drugs after having 2 children and then got clean and sober and have been since 2007. I was nearly murdered in April of 2007 I was stabbed multiple times. The suspect was arrested and stayed in jail till his trial then was found guilty of premeditated attempted murder and 6 other felony charges and was sentenced to 22 years in prison and had a release date for August 2026 but I'm 2020 in high desert prison he was stabbed to death while fighting 2 inmates he died later that day. There were other attacks and stabbing and killings l related in other prisons tied to the guy who tried to kill me. I'm still without a mother she left California in December of 2019 I'll probably never see her again. Never hold her hands while walking through Walgreens or Walmart. Just spending time with her. She moved to Missouri vendor Colorado then to Wyoming where she lived with her husband who treats her poorly and used to beat her and then verbally abusive I would buy her groceries and he'd find out I did it and throw them away. My mom talking bad about me to him back fires because he hates me too for sticking up for my mom and she tells him she wants me in her life and he put a stop to that for 30 years. I'm 51 and just since 2019 she has been calling to have a relationship but I can't bring up my hurts she caused or she'll say I'm making her have a nervous breakdown. It's hard. I have a fiancee I've been with for 12 years who's also clean and sober and treats me like a Queen. I love her very much. We support each other. We attend AA or NA and do groups on the Internet like international marathon meetings which are so cool because you hear how someone across the world handles drug addiction and alcohol addiction. We get tips on how someone might do differently. I love my mom but she kicked me out the family when I was almost 14. So from a child to 51 I have lots of hurts and mental pain.
Even the guards were sad to see Colt go. They pretty much raised him.

It's normal in most cultures for the children, especially the eldest boy, to be financially responsible for his mother. Normally, this pushes young men to be responsible, and they are far less likely to commit crimes. So the issue is not about single mothers and more to do with bad role models, poverty and poor community resilience.

Sad that's the only way they survive and once they get out they always don't go the right path they were use to drugs the gang selling and robbing people

Tell me how many teenagers listen to adults I havent met many. Plus a lot of kids have not had the best parenting that also plays into it. A lot of these kids come from one parent homes and have to deal with issue's a lot of us didnt have to.

The problem a lot of times is the issues that got them there are still there when they are released. It’s hard to stay away from situations when you have nothing and looking like in the long run you will still have nothing or even less. A lot of these stories are sad bc you can see that the connection with parent and child is sketchy and distant. It is up to the parents to work harder and harder to not become a statistic or become their environment. We live in a time where excuses actually do look like excuses instead of reasons that used to make sense
@seanharris2985 - you are right about the negative forces that often greet kids again the minute they're released. It can be a vicious cycle. Many kids have told us they see no hope and no opportunities in their future. Sadly, that can be a recipe for returning to the system. We always hope for the best, and hope that somewhere following release they find at least one person who shows them there's a different path. Just minor incidents but still hung out with those ppl bc it’s the projects, you can hang out if your from the neighborhood you grew up there. Just don’t get involved with the politics and dealings.

Hate that Charles went back to prison. Really thought he had it altogether and figured out until he dropped the ball and sealed his fate. Right after the release. As for Miles and Colt, kudos to them making a huge leap forward. Always wondered what happened to those two but hearing what’s happening to them now made me smile.
@pantherteen1997 - Really appreciate you watching these stories. Everyone involved in Charles's case was shocked by his outcome. Thankfully, Miles and Colt had a much different outcome, and help prove that second chances can often lead to much happier endings. Thanks again for being here with us!

I was thinking hed be back for a serious offense, just not as bad as murder. 147 years. He sealed his fate. But he had his chance and killed someone. His own damn fault!

Homeboy was real good at telling everyone what they wanted to hear. Real manipulative dude that had all you guys fooled. He ended up right where he deserves to be.
He didn't want to change. If he did he got chances to do so. He could've gotten in school or went to the military and got a better life and away from the ghetto. He made the choice to murder an innocent person. It's sad but we need harsher sentences and start charging the kids parents and guardians. I changed my life from being in juvenile hall for stealing from a store and mom not wanting me. I got out on my 18th birthday. I did my best and still wasn't good enough for her. And now I'm 51 and she's begging for me to be in her life now.
Black women need to stop spreading their legs everywhere and having 20 different baby daddies. They need to break the cycle and stigma and have some self respect.
He played the system and did what was needed to get out, toed the line and used his prison time wisely to give the right impressions.
Classic manipulator and prisons are literally full of them, it's what gets them locked up in the first place
@@carrieanncancino5118you can't charge a parent for a crime another person committed even if it is their own child. I know that my kid went on a crazy hiatus and it had nothing to do with what I taught him.... Thank God he's moved past that... But it definitely had nothing to do with me or how he was raised.

It’s crazy because I was I jail with Charles from 2016 up until he was sentenced. It was a sad day to see him get that much time

The part that got me was when he said." Remember what we talked about, things like education wise" you have to tell theses people what they want to hear of you want to go home.. When I was in tyc they had us write a success plan.. It had to be at least 15 minutes long and you have to remember it.. All that stuff was good now that I think about it, but as a teenager you are just trying to get home.. Depending on the environment.2 weeks and they are back at it.. If you don't change the people you hung around, you won't break the link
The judge who sentenced Delana is a true credit to the bench. She showed the wisdom of Solomon in the matter and the outcome was good for everyone involved. Life gave the young Delana no breaks whatsoever but she overcome that deficit finally and made a life for herself. Very uplifting to witness.

My dad told me when I was a kid dont do the crime unless you want to go where they tell you when to eat,what you can eat,when to get and when to go to bed, what you can wear and when you can go outside,what you can watch on tv. And I thought fuck that never doing any crime.
