Teenager's Last Day in Prison - Behind Bars: Prison Transfer

- From our Archive: Viewers have seen several videos on this channel of Colt. We met Colt when he was 15 years old and had just entered adult prison with a 25 years sentence. Over the course of the next 10 years, we not only stayed in touch with Colt--he became like family to us.
During the course of following Colt throughout his time in prison, we watched him become an extraordinary young man. He gained his college education behind bars, and stayed committed to helping other young prisoners adapt to life behind bars. During his incarceration, Colt became cellmates with another teenager you've seen on our channel -- Miles Folsom. Colt and Miles became like brothers while they served their time. They remain best friends today.
In this video from our archive, our cameras were at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility the day Colt was transferred from Wabash to another adult prison in the state of Indiana. It was a nerve racking day for all involved. It was also the day Colt had to say goodbye to Miles after the two had been cellmates for over 3 years.
This raw footage shows the process behind prison walls as Colt talks to prison staff and prepares for the day ahead. We interview Colt the morning he prepares to pack all his things, then follow him back to his cellblock. Once inside, he and and Miles prepare for their last day in the same prison together. We then see them walk through the prison yard with all of Colt's belongings in a cart. Once at the back gate, Colt goes through the transfer process -- changing into a new jumpsuit, being shackled alongside other prisoners preparing to transfer out, and finally, escorted into the van for the long drive to a new prison.
UPDATE: Colt served over 10 years in prison, was a model inmate, gained his education behind bars, worked a job and mentored others. He was released in 2019 and is doing great today. Along with a full time job, he has also started his own personal training business, a goal he dreamed of as far back as his first year in prison. Everyone at Calamari continues to keep in regular contact with him today.

Confused about the sentiment people have about being happy that he changed. The only thing that changed was his circumstance. He was accosted and beat by a drunk to the point of wanting to kill him and run away. Nobody talks about how his step dad was an abusive POS and his mom was complacent. He more than likely was never a threat to society as long as he wasn't being beaten and berated regularly. This is a boy who was completely failed by his support system and promptly punished like an adult for it. Colt isn't some champion of the potential of our justice system, he's a boy who was forced in a box after being traumatized and had to grow up on his own...

THIS!!! I'm seeing so many comments praising the correctional facilities. They must not have watched the initial interview when he was much younger and speaking on how BAD the correctional facility was.
He killed his stepfather... He finally got sick and tired of his stepfather beating him bloody and just dragging him around on the ground like trash. He should've never been in prison.
It should be self defense, I know he probably did not kill him in actual self defense but he did to prevent future assault.

Miles is amazing! He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Holy Cross College and was the first prisoner to ever be published in the Notre Dame Journal of Undergraduate Research. He's going to do great things!

Miles and Colt are so intelligent and seem to be good hearted people.Prayers for them and certainly wish them the best.I think it was meant to be they came to know each other (brothers). Miles words at the end made me cry.

@@jeffreybail353 Exactly it's like the family forgot to tell the damn truth, and this boy paid the price for it. You know, Colt won't talk about it because he ashamed by it, which makes me wonder if he was molested by his step father. Think about it, he also was one of those Eagle Scout leaders, and we know what a lot of them do not all of them, but a lot of them do molest boys. I mean, I've been molested, and I can understand why Colt hasn't been able to talk about it. My heart literally breaks for this kid, he never should have been in an adult prison, he should have been getting therapy. It makes me so mad what this town did to this kid, absolutely horrible his so called family did absolutely nothing for him that's disgusting..
Colt is the Number 1 example of what caring people, proper rehabilitation and understanding in the correctional system. When people care about and treat someone as a human and not a number this is possible. I know Colt is out and all I can wish for him is God Speed and Keep Focused on the road ahead.

This is a very strange take to me, I'm not sure how much of his development can be contributed to the correctional system. This kid was abused by his alcoholic step father to the point of wanting to kill him. He had been a victim the entire way through, and in my opinion if you abuse a child to the point of them considering killing you and running away to be their best option, you probably deserve to be shot. He stopped being abused every day and turned out to otherwise be a seemingly normal kid. If anything, locking him up for several years instead of monitoring him and mandating a psychologist / therapist seems to me like a severe injustice.

Miles made me cry. I know he missed him very much. I have just started watching these videos and I’m kind off out of order. I see your heart for these young men who do have a chance for change.
Colt had to take matters into his own hands, and that is absolutely horrific. This kid was terrorized, he was beat on the whole time he was growing up with this monster, not only that, it looks like he was molested by him, he doesn't talk about it because he's ashamed by it. I'm a survivor of being molested by my own family, and I am telling you this young man was, he has all of the signs, after all, his stepfather was an Eagle Scout and that should tell you everything you need to know so many men who are in the Eagle Scouts, molest young boys, and they do it all the time and get away with it, it is absolutely disgusting, the way his family did him, especially his mother, she's just as much to blame for what happened, he never should have been in prison, he should have been getting a lot of therapy, my heart breaks for him, he's paid enough, he never should have been in there, but some of his family members should have been, they knew what was going on and did nothing.

It's very sad that Colt and his friend Paul were given adult sentences . They should have been charged as juveniles. And got maybe a sentence of 7-10 years. The step father was an abuser.
I hope Colt was not abused in any way when he went into the adult prison. So many predators will prey
on the young prisoners.
I am glad they are both out and doing so well.
I hope his roommate is doing fine now. You can tell he's totally heart broken because someone he trusted and could depend on is leaving his life, at least for the moment, but the moments he needs him the most. That has got to be really difficult.
But, if he does as well, his moment will come too, and that will be sweet for him.

This young man is an example of true rehabilitation and a successful program none of the people look stressed. The size of the prison is huge and very clean good to see our tax money thats working for a change. Im wishing him and his friend Gods Blessings. Bklyn Strong!
Damn man this kid has grown up a lot he was actually holding himself well at even 15 good luck to the rest of your journey I watch a lot of these videos as I was also in the juvenile system & was on probation for a few years as well, dont miss that shit at all and ever since I turned 18 I straightened up I'm now 20 ,my dad got locked up right after my 14th birthday and I lost my only parent I had he is still incarcerated till I'm 27 I have a son and everyday I just grind it out and make sure I'm doing what's right for him and my family don't ever think because your family gave up on you or you had a bad childhood that you can't turn it around and make good out of all the bullshit you've seen , rise above be great and God bless🙏

I don't understand why they don't want to change, people just have excuses and blame other people for messing up in life. It's not our fault that we been born, but is our failed have we died. yes life is unfair but that the fact for everyone. How intelligent, good-natured children like these two were failed to the extent that they winded up in prison must be one of the most tragic failures of American society.

I have really enjoyed watching these videos. To see how well these kids have done and are doing. As a former medic in county detention centers, I’ve only seen a few teens come in that were waived to adult status. One of them thought he was big and bad. That almost got him hurt really bad. So to hear these positive stories of these kids is just amazing. I look forward to watching more of these.

From what colt said, after parents divorce, he and mom have good life, until his mom met stepdad, he drinks everyday also his mom, both troublesome, thats how he got troubled mind as kid, good thing he learned from it, and hope continue to be a good citizen, never seen his mom during the docu

Well, he needed therapy, his stepfather was a horrible person who beat on him and who likely molested him, so I do hope he gets a lot of therapy, his stepfather was a monster, that's why Colt, never talked about it, my heart breaks for him, it seems like he does have a bright future, and that is awesome.

You can't help but be damaged inside by a terrible experience like prison that those kids had. Our stepdad molested us yet was never punished. Evil people walk among us and good people are hurt.

I saw one of your early doc's about him, and I'm glad to hear he's out & doing well. My best wishes for he and his future. Never knew what he was in for, and now that I read in the comments why, this young man NEVER should have been incarcerated for his circumstances. As the saying goes, "you can only kick a dog so long before it will turn and bite you", and that's exactly what happened here. His stepfather got what he deserved in my opinion.
he's a credit to himself, a young man who faced severe provocation and was let down by a flawed justice system designed by box ticking lawyers and DA's looking numbers for his records. I understand he's now doing well for himself and I wish him well from the UK. This young man should never have been jailed.

He did 9 years for murdering somebody... That's an incredibly fair sentence. I bet if you asked him, he'd tell you he wouldn't have had it any other way. Him and his friend are truly rehabilitated... You NEVER get to see inmates who become friends in prison, and stick with each other like this, get as much privileges as they did. I mean his friend literally got to walk him to the front gate of the damn prison. That is very rare.
That tells me that these young men, rehabbed in there, they didn't partake in the immature, gang politics that go on in prison, they didn't continue to be horrible criminals while being in there, and the reward for them for doing that, was a MASSIVE sentence reduction, they got proper education, even college education, they used every single resource available to them to better their lives. Lots of kids have abusive step parents who are alcoholics. The fact that people believe that gives you the right to murder them, like you believe is WILD to me. You should never stoop to that level, I don't care. By saying that, you're effectively saying, people who get locked up for abusing somebody, should face the death penalty, and die for it. Which is incredibly vile to me.

I too felt so sad for Miles. I hope he does his time well, and hopefully cuts some time off it. This is my first video of this series, so, I need to catch up on what's going on here.
I love how this is being done though, because the person interviewing asks questions that the general public would like to ask, but can't. It's also done with such great respect and affection, and that makes watching that much more enjoyable.
I really appreciate the videos you guys make. While I could list quite a few reasons for liking the work you do, to me the important point you make clear is that good people make bad choices. Not everyone in prison is bad.

He’s actually on my fb and I wa suprised when he replied back he’s doing great now runs a gym
he was never flawed to begin with. he stood up against his abusive step dad in self defense. colt is the prime example of society being indifferent to a young childs suffering and giving him the treatment you would give an ordinary thug. Its only thanks to his persistence in keeping out of trouble and the help of the facility and documentary team that he's on right tracks. But he was still deprived of many good years of his life.

Colt and his friend Paul were just trapped in a circumstance that they didn't knew that time. Since they were young the only thing they knew was to kill that man so Colt can run away. I remember him saying, nobody knew what was really happening in that house. This is what rehabilitation is. I hope his friend Miles who looks perfectly okay is doing great as well. Loosing a dear friend during hard times, wasn't easy. I'm happy Colt is doing okay now.
Those are 2 young men who i would be very proud to have in my community ❤❤

Thank you Calamari for bringing this episode and following up with Colt since his incarceration back in 2010...Only through time, will we from the outside understand a little into the world of these "convicts". Only through TIME, very few who made the best of the situation. Colt is very intelligent and took this time to get his Associates plus working to reduce his time. It was unfortunate that Colt had to pull the trigger however why wasn't "self-defense" used? Yes both Paul and Colt took the plea but looking back they could have better representation. This is a journey of being abused and trying to survive but Colt may have chosen the wrong method and he dearly paid the price. This is a prime example of if someone is intelligent at 15, deciding to make the best with the situation - i dont know what is. Thank you Calamari for personalizing Colt and Miles friendship and brotherhood. Both came into the system alone but both will be leaving as brothers. It is just amazing to see how both are well read and they decided to rise above the fray and will definitely contribute to society upon release. Hope Calamari do a follow-up with both them as a reunion. That would be the perfect ending to both men showing how they rehabilitated themselves.

I spent much of my teens in juvenile detention center for smoking weed. I refused to take meds for my ADHD. As a adult I moved to California and started smoking weed legally. I have not been in trouble since. Good luck G!!!

Never should have gone to prison in the first place. We are totally against torturing children or even adults. Those who don't see anything wrong with it are warped.
I’ll never understand why force prisoners to wear jumpsuits and things so atypical from the rest of society, yet reform is to rehabilitate them to have the structure and sense to learn how to live or be civil. Miles’ poem breaks me heart. Someone please explain why the jumpsuits are necessary to differentiate their status by appearance in such humiliating clothes that don’t support any confidence or assurance for what clothes are designed for. They may as well be naked.

I think he is a good young man . It's hard enough been adult putting up with abusive drunk . I can't imagine what it would be like for a kid and having know one to protect you apart from your 12 year old friend it would have been terrifying . I hope that people will let them live there life's when they are free

Good luck CK to him, lucky to have a chance to make a life. I was locked up and we had a kid come in at 16 for murder he got natural life. It's been 20 some years now and he's still there.
Colts learnt his lesson and turned out a lovely person. You have to respect others and respect yourself. Its the only way. Have a happy 😊 life Colt.

@@milesmfolsom Not sure if this is the real Miles Folsom (lots of imposters around these days), but I am very glad to hear he is doing well. I have been following the case ever since the first documentary came on television back when I was a young teenager (I'm 23 now). I just want to say that I am frankly very impressed with how these young men have managed to better your lives inside the prison system and were able to get out and on with their lives while still young. Especially so with Miles due to his extensive juvenile criminal history. I am also glad that Levi, Miles' next cellmate, also seems to be on the straight and narrow too per the recent interviews. I wish Miles (and by extension Colt and the others) the absolute best as they start to build their livelihoods and careers.
@@milesmfolsom there will be bad days for sure, it's how you work through those bad days that'll keep you a free man. Also, dont move too fast with life once youre completely free...take it one day at a time to not overwhelm yourself. Best of luck man! I did 1 year and 6 months in a max secure juvy placement when I was a teen...in my 30s now havnt been in trouble since. You can do it!

As absolutely insane and crazy as it sounds.. I have meet people in prison who say they would do it again. I asked a guy one time what he would do if he was free and had a gun. He told me he would use it to get money. I was stunned
Not saying he had the right or an excuse to kill his step dad but he wasn’t some evil kid or a kid who would have been a killer, he made a stupid choice because he felt like he had no choice. I’m glad he is doing so well and he was given a chance to get back into society I know he will do well.

Great doc , I’ve been following colt thew out the years , he has turned into a very handsome man with manners , he doesn’t seem to have anger or hate in him , I’d say he got the best off all the concealing , and schooling , I pray he does great out in society.
He sounds so intelligent now very mature. It's sad what happen and what put him where he is. I do pray he moves on and do not return.
I hope he has a good support group to make sure he's staying on the right track till he's able to figure out his life and become independent.
