- Here's a tour of my DW short stack kit with the Remo Starfire drum heads and me doing a lot of "roundhouse-fills" and general tom-heavy noodling so you guys can hear the combo of Starfire single-ply 0.13 mm film and DW Maple Mahogany Short Stack toms! It's a winning combination!

Same. His gong tones are so muscular. Made me convert a 20" kick to a gong when I first saw Thomas do it.

I've recently liked the idea of fast sizes for my 4 piece kit, 13x7, 16x10 22x12 for portability. These drums sound awesome not sure why more drum makers don't make affordable shallow drums of good quality. These drums sounds awesome!

Digging the idea of the short-stack toms... great for those of us wishing to get the level of the tom levels lower, especially over a pair of 26" kicks!!!

daaayummm sounds killer, I just can not play clear or mirror finish heads, 1 practice session and they look used as hell, I stick with coated, but man these make me wanna try em out for sure, could listen to you play for hours
These Starfires seem to keep their perfect mirror look better than coated or clear heads. I've used them for more than a week now and they still look very fresh and clean actually

wow. really impressed at the sound and the dynamics in those drums. DW really is good at what they do. I know this will sound bogus: but those drums = amazing. maybe the best kit I've ever heard sonically. I'm listening through high quality stereo (JBL) that is very neutral. Good choice Thomas, DW hit one out of the park with your kit.
Great to hear your epic drum size/heads combinations. I'm sure the shallow depths reduce overtones and are great for recording. Have you considering making an inverse 80's depth kit?

The toms still sound plenty beefy even in the short sizes. And I can still feel that 18" FT resonating 15 minutes after I watched the video 🤣How do the Starfires feel compared to a typical clear head - any difference in feel you can detect?

I don't know if it's room reverb or what, but the gong drum has a weird metallic ring. The toms, especially with that concert tom, it sounds like you could play the Miami Vice theme. 🤣
The Gong drum is the only drum that has some reverb and compression on it. I also tweaked the attack a bit so it translates better on small speakers. I like that metallic attack sound, it helps to differentiate between the Gong drum and the kick drums

Wtf that is the best sounding drum kit i have ever heard. Doubt it's natural sound but still. I've never heard toms like that before
It's very natural except for the Gong drum. Everything else is just minimal EQ and a tiny bit of compression only on kicks and the Ging Drum. Reverb on the Gong drum, that's it.

Dang, those drums sound amazing. Maybe it's the EQ'ing, but the tone of the toms sound like the ones on "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship.
I just stuck mic's on them and tuned them well. They just sound amazing from the get go.

Incredible sounding toms. How much of that great sound would attribute to those heads? Of course, great drums and great tuning are huge components as well.
The heads and tuning are always 90% of the sound.The shells are important too but the heads and tuning make all the difference.
try add muffle ring for each toms and floor toms , and also gong bass drum,
and why without complete 4 piece of roto toms ???
all of them putting all togheter is great sound

Ich verwende eine Rackstange zwischen HiHat und einem Beckenständer auf der 4 Tom-Halter montiert sind.

Quite good, lots of attack on them even more than clear heads. I like them but definitely is preference.

8x4 concert tom, 10 x 4 tom, 12 x 4.5, 13x 5.5, 14 x 6.5, 16x14, 18 x16, 24 x14 (2), 20x 18 Gong drum, 14 x 6.5 Edge Snare drum

Ive also been thinking about a 24” with super fast toms to get the toms lower.
Looks super convenient. And the toms still seem like they have plenty of resonance.
