Salve musicoffili, oggi vi proponiamo un grande speciale su uno dei batteristi più richiesti al mondo, il tanto simpatico quanto bravo Thomas Lang, che abbiamo incontrato in occasione della data romana del tour con Paul Gilbert; come al solito vi offriamo un'approfondita intervista a cura di Francesco Sicheri, in cui Thomas ci racconta della sua vita, dei suoi progetti passati e futuri, ed in più, come già visto in passato per altri grandi batteristi (Marco Minneman, Gavin Harrison, Mike Portnoy) uno speciale tutto dedicato al suo setup di batteria. Lang è stato così gentile da offrirci una panoramica davvero completa del suo drum kit DW Drums e farcelo ascoltare in modo superbo, il tutto ovviamente portato al massimo dal suo grande playing.

Lang literally gives the best rig rundowns. He explains every choice and every piece of gear extensively and gives examples and actually plays it.
He and Benny Greb are excellent salesmen.

Barky! (Love that description.) That 5x13 snare really adds to the solo. Those Meinls sound great. Lang is a truly inventive drummer. He gave a talk and demo at GC awhile back and was very humble and explained how to solo responsibly. He's no diva. I'm a sincere fan.
Yes to hear a DW drum that inspires me or does it for me in any way. Something soulless about the sound of their drums.
Really impressed by Thomas! which takes lots to move me, since I'm age 65 & had a life time of playing drums with & for great musicians, successfully. Praise God for everything good.

Man! That was so cool watching Thomas lay that groove down! I really got a lot out of that whole presentation! A lot of good takeaways, especially when it came to the cymbals! I love a double bass setup like that!

Proof positive that DW Drums are some of the most esthetically pleasing drums you'll ever lay eyes on, but... I said G**DAMN the sound they produce makes your soul stand up and shout... lol Oh yea, and this Thomas Lang guy that plays these monsters, well he's pretty much an over achiever and deserves everything drumming has given him... :) Don't hate, be inspired..!!

Its been between 3 guys for about 20 years or more. Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati and Marco Minnemann. You pretty much can not get any better than those guys are. Take your pick. Honorable mention: Akira Jimbo

+Ben M he is the only drummer i know able to play anything. foot or hand doesnt matter. so technical he is the best drummer ever.
DrumL3000 While Jojo Mayer doesn't do double bass drumming, you should check out his two-DVD series "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer." Covering hand and foot technique, respectively, it covers things like push pull, heel toe, the moeller pumping technique, and more!
Personally, I'm actually a Mangini nut, and have my drum kit setup to an extent to replicate his drums. I enjoy Thomas' work, but I just enjoy Mike more haha. If you want technical, Mike does some pretty insane stuff; same thing with Virgil Donati. They're all up there!
+DrumL3000 ... I'm not keeping up with the bands out there, but there are some good drummers. I mean, how about Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Grohl ... Tommy Lee can play while they send him up and around on his roller coaster drum set ...
Not what I was going for, really; to each their own. Like I said, they both are great, and I'm inspired by both; no need to have a battle of Mangini vs. Donati, although that would be cool to set that up in a video just as a side-by-side comparison.

That is the best sounding bass drum I've ever heard. Great sounding kit. Not a big fan of the ride cuz I don't like dry cymbals, but otherwise amazing kit.

Is it a different pedal to get the bass drum AND the bells/hi-hat together? Or some sort of engage/disengage?
3 pedals leftside & 3 optional 4 pedals rightside.
He steps on both pedals at the same time.
He's cross-stepping on the pedals to play them all at the same time.
the Meinl cowbell ( that he used with the pedal ) is 6/45 " or 8 " ?

Man, I don't know who's better, Dave Weckl, or Thomas Lang...I know different styles... Everytime I hear Weckl play I think Weckl use the best, then I hear Thomas Lang play, I think he is the best.... Wish I could play like either one of them.
Weckl does not grove nor can play solid funk beats with feel which is real drumming.

Poor camera man in the back, he's like "what, go to the feet? ok, give me a second". Once he gets there, Thomas is done with his feet.

The bark of hi-hats is not, in my opinion, built in to the cymbals really at all. The placement of the stick, the force it's driven, and the manipulation of the pedal and distance fixed between the cymbals...cause the 'bark'...which is a distinct sound the drummer produces when needed. I'm just sayin'.....
O.O I only seen donati do rudiments like that with the right set of limbs
