Odd editing job aside, Wilt's right. There's nothing Jordan can say "they didn't stop me from doing it, I just stopped doing it" about. When Wilt decided to lead the league in scoring, he did; to lead the league in assists, he did; to lead the league in rebounds, he did. There is no more unstoppable force in the history of the NBA than Wilt.

    • @johncook9392
      @johncook9392 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Unstoppable in different ways though. Wilt had power, height, and size that Jordan simply didnt have. That allowed Wilt to post up and back anyone down. Jordan was unstoppable in a different way, with his speed and accuracy. I actually didn't like Jordan all that much while growing up, but as an adult I definitely see the argument for Jordan being GOAT... One of the major things I hadn't realized as a kid was that Jordan didn't really shoot 3 pointers. That says a lot to his skills and style of attacking the rim when he has such a high career PPG and FG% but got there with only 1/4 the amount of 3 pointers that Lebron James has.

In the modern NBA he'd have to play less than 48 mpg...so right off the top, his stats wouldn't be the same. He'd also be going against other top tier talent every night. Guys who are just as well trained and conditioned as him. I think that might prove to be a little more difficult to dominate against than he (and you) think. Wilt had a night and day size and strength advantage over every player he stepped on the court against in the 60s and 70s...with exception to Bill Russell. He'd still have an advantage today, and would still be an absolute beast...but the gap wouldn't be nearly as massive.
And I'm not trying to call that era "soft"...just different. The overall training and commitment was not even close to the same. A lot of guys still had second jobs for crying out loud. That's one thing about athletes that has undeniably changed. The game has evolved.

To try and curb that "defensive" approach everytime MJ would 'air' into the paint. This is interesting to watch knowning similar arguments are being made btwn Jordan & LBJ. Jordan was allowed to be Jordan when the league developed into a cash cow but Julius Ervings ABA game saved both leagues through the merger because everybody especially the NBA wanted to see him in the televised NBA where the money and more fans were...sucks that he and Wilt had to be asked not to be the dominant players that they were despite how much it benefited the league especially later on.

I firmly believe Wilt was the best. He had the conditioning of a truely elite track and field athlete, could compete favorably in strength training against all but struck power lifters, and had to hold back on so many occasions to avoid hurting other players.
The game changes with time, and while I think the playmaking strateg, footwork, and shooting skills of todays players is above where Wilt was in his time, those are learned skills that I have no doubt Wilt could also learn if he had been born half a century later.
Wilt will probably always be the goat. There are only a few deserving consideration for the title, and Michael is on the list along side Labron. It is those two and Wilt. Without question Wilt has it. Media attention and crazy sponsor deals make Michael and Labron bigger names, but I’d rather have Wilt on my team if I could only choose 1 of those three players.

Another conversation for another time) One year he played MORE than 48 minutes a game. TRANSLATION: He played every minute of every game, including overtime. Magic liked to stack those pick up games. It came down to game point each. Wilt blocked Magic's shot. Magic called goal tending. Wilt said it was not goal tending. Wilt played the second half of his career without having a 30+ ppg season and still finished with a 30.1 ppg average -- that tells you just how dominant he was as a scorer earlier in his career.
Wilt's role changed after his seventh season -- earlier in his career, he was told to score; during the second half of his career (when he had more talented teams), he was asked to shoot more selectively, pass more, and focus more on defense (basically, the Bill Russell role).
If Wilt extended his scoring dominance a few more seasons, or he was consciously concerned with someone catching his scoring totals, he would have put it so far out of reach that Kareem would have never caught him, and Jordan would not have the highest scoring average. They caught Wilt because Wilt took his foot off the gas.

I have seen the footage of his track and field exploits. Impressive but not world class. Someone with his arm length does not bench-press that much and the 48-inch vertical, where was that ever measured? The highest ever recorded vertical was 46-inch. Wilt played in an era that had 70+% white American born players in it throughout his career that’s not the NBA. For example, there are 5% white American born players in today’s game. That’s a gigantic drop off. The first black person wasn’t even aloud to play basketball till 1950 and even after racism plagued the sport. Wilt was a finesse player who was defended by one person. Wilt never had to match up with so many African Americans and never with European players. The average height and weight was shorter/lighter back in Wilts era.
Shaq was so good they changed the rules in 2001 like front court players being able to play zone and implementing the def 3sec rule. I have never seen a player once he catches the ball have two guys immediately on him the way Shaq did. The 50’s, 60’s and 70’s is the ABA era the real NBA started in the 80’s 90’s 2000’s. I’m not saying Wilt couldn’t play 90’s & 2000’s basketball but to think he would be as great as he was when he played with the Sixers I’m sorry your crazy. Admittedly, as fan of MJ/Kobe/LeBron and all these modern guys, it's really hard to imagine how good Wilt was. We see guys like Shaq, Hakeem, Giannis, all these giants that are great athletes. And the numbers as far as vertical/bench press/etc just seem ridiculous in any athletic competition. That's why I don't like the idea of 1 GOAT of a team sport anyway.
But did yall notice 3:40??? That's Shaq and Patrick Ewing, with Wilt throwing the jump ball. Not only does he make them seem regular size, watch the hand shake and how Shaq gets pulled in. Maybe some of those Wilt stories are true 🤣

And it certainly help that in what little footage of Wilt that exists, he's playing against guys that wouldn't even be bench-warmers in today's NBA. All the Jordan Rules were; NBA basketball from the 60's to the 80's. Now Chamberlain had to face HoF centers every night for 82 games. He dominated all of them.
Championships are TEAM efforts; there are plenty of players who great players on great teams. Karl Malone and Stockton, the great Suns teams of the 80's, The Sixers during Dr. J's career and he won only 1 championship, so did Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Willis Reed, Wes Unseld and Rick Barry.
Players like Ewing, Barkley, Iverson and Miller, never got any rings. So a player's greatness isn't measured by how many rings he's won. If that were the case, Bill Russell is the GOAT with 11 (10 consecutive championships)

Yet u fail to mention how it took wilt 10 years to make it to the finals. And then u bring up the pistons team who some how u compare it to the 60s to 80s just cause they didn’t have many rules then. But what u don’t get is that in that time there were no rules but there was also just 1on1 and very little skill and anyone to actually utilize those rules. Yes there was a lot more contact but they actually called fouls and didn’t throw people out right away for it but the game was similar to the wnba but with way less dribbling and no coaching. But i don’t think u know the jordan rules. It wasn’t just double teams they were intentionally trying to injure mj. They would would grab at his pressure points in the game to try to weaken him. And basically ram him kick him pucnch him if he saw any type of daylight to the paint in a era where players were way more skilled and better coaching and there was pretty much a 7 foot center on every team sometimes even more with elite guards .And on top of all that the pistons were tampering with the refs so they wouldn’t call those fouls during the game wen they did abuse jordan. So yes they should have changed the rules. Cause whether or not they changed the game in Jordan’s favor they can literally end people’s career or even kill them playing that way and if it was not changed every team would have been playing that dirty and there would be no basketball. They changed the rules in favor of everyone but the pistons doing that to jordan are the reason for it. So U don’t know shit. That’s a dam lie wilt had to face hall of fame centers every night because there was only around 3 hof centers playing in his entire career. And on top of that there were only 8-13 teams that existed wen he was in his prime he never saw more than 17 teams and each time he played a center his size his numbers dropped significantly or completely had a bad game all together. And, is that the best way to describe it? Because, looking at video, it seems like Gus fell, and dislocated his shoulder on the floor. The contact might've been all ball, which might make it ok to describe the block did the dislocation.

Interestingly, it would have been great to see him go against Shaq. Assuming Shaq could take the physical play brought by Wilt, I think it would be interesting, at least for the first 15 minutes because Shaq would be gassed. I think Wilt would still dominate, but it would be interesting to see if it would be more of a battle and to see Wilt push him around.

All these old timers have legends on how unhuman these guys were only because if how unverifiable the era was and how easy it was to make up garbage. Wilt didnt sleep with 20k women, bench 500 pounds, etc.
