Bill Russell tells a story that Wilt once went up to dunk on him and Russell had his hand laying backwards on the rim to block the dunk in a position where the dunk would have broken Russell's wrist. Wilt chose not to dunk and instead used the backboard to make the shot. That is sportsmanship to the extreme and all the evidence you need that as fierce a competitor as was Wilt, he was also an incredibly decent human being.
Lord of stories like this. Wilt actually played a finesse style game. If he’d played in Shaq’s era, I’m genuinely afraid centers would have had more than just their arms broken. The man could bench 600lbs and dead lift 1,000lbs…before any knowledge of rest, recovery, nutrition, or frankly anything concerning modern fitness.
The players playing today should literally thank God Wilt played in the era he did

I was into basketball starting during the Cousy Era and went directly into the Wilt Era after he played a year with the Harlem Globetrotters. Franklly, I don't remember anybody trash talking WIlt before, during or after a game, nor giving him a hard foul in the paint. All I ever heard was maximum respect. I have to believe that the word was out from day one that he was not to be screwed with on the court and should just be allowed to have his way under the basket (100 points vs. the Knicks?!?!?). Nobody amasses so many probably unbreakable records not having been seriously gang-defended and maybe even targeted for intentional injury over all those years if the other teams thought they could get away with it.

If you look at the news paper articles of his 100 point games they killed him in the papers. I think subconsciously he was always aware of his size. Because even when he went up against other 7ft’s he was stronger and faster and against shorter centers he was taller, stronger, and faster. He dwarfed Shaq for goodness sake.

Shaq was great, but Wilt was superhuman.

Shaq couldn't even handle Olajuwon; Wilt was just as strong as Shaq (don't believe me, do research on Chamberlain from people who knew and/or played against/with him), far faster and athletic; he would give Shaq as many (if not more) fits as Olajuwon gave him. I'd say him and James are neck and neck. LeBron has been otherworldly when it comes to athleticism at his size and his durability. Even though he wasn't a natural shooter, James even figured out how to become a real threat from the 3 point line. I wouldn't say he was as good a basketball player as Wilt, but athletically, I think those two are WAY ahead of 3rd place.
Wilt is one of one, avg 50 pts and 48+ mins a season, UNTHINKABLE.
And totally impossible in the modern era of basketball. I'm pretty sure shaq would average those numbers in that era too.

Ability? Wilt didn't dribble well, didn't shoot well, and was mostly credited with what everyone called "garbage baskets" -- he picked up a lot of loose balls in the paint and promptly stuffed them. Those were the moments when was INVINCIBLE. There was no stopping him. I saw defenders like Danny Ainge get lifted off the floor when desperately trying to hold down his wrist as we would lift the ball he had just picked up to dunk it. If that's what's you call dominant, so be it. There's something about Americans that causes you admire overwhelming brute strength. Phil played against Wilt during Wilt's final 6 seasons, when Wilt was older and slower due to a horrific knee injury in 1970. After that, his lateral movement was limited. So Phil did not see a young, injury-free Wilt who sprinted up and down the court for an entire 48 minutes his first 9 seasons. When Alex Hannam came to coach the Sixers, he asked Wilt how long he wanted to play each game. Wilt responded, "I never get tired."

@LOL69 I think maybe a good estimation is benchpressing 700 pounds in his prime, 53+ inches for his vert, and a plethora amount of other feats, I just can't believe wilt in his prime grabbing potentially 30+ rebounds (in his era), 70+ points (i know this sounds crazy, but if wilt only focused in the paint, instead of shooting shots like fadeaways, he would've been a even crazier scoring machine, 5+ assists, (talking about 50pt wilt so he would pass as much as he did while playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, i believe around 70% from the field bc i'd be assuming if wilt actually played like big men back when he played

"Wilt is a very goal-oriented person, and and under Alex (Hannum) he wanted to win a title and become the first center to lead the league in assists. He liked to pass to Hal Greer or myself, because we just caught it and shot it. Chet Walker usually caught the ball, took a dribble or two and then shot it - no assist for Wilt (under the assist rules of that time). So Wilt preferred to give the ball to us.

Wilt went out of his way to chase his assist stats - going as far as to AVOID passing to Hall of Fame teammate Chet Walker because he would most likely not get an assist from Walker under the format of recording assist statistics at the time.

Keep in mind that Jackson played Wilt at the end of his career, when he no longer looked to be the dominant scorer. Earlier in his career, there is plenty of film on Wilt sprinting past everyone in transition.

The problem with Wilt stories not being captured on film enough is that they sound like biblical stories we just put to the side and go with the more believable ones we can see. Those numbers, such strength, such athleticism is once in a millennia.
It really does. When Schwarzenegger comes out and says Wilt outlifted ANY of the body builders they were working out with (and confirmed a 500lb bench), it's too fantastical to believe. Of course you can listen to the stories of Wilt playing pickup games with NBA stars in his 50s and DOMINATING the game and it might make people realize the stories were true.
There are some rare highlights here on youtube that are so astonishing they basically lend one to believing the other hyperbolic stories. Wilt blocking Kareem's skyhook 2 times in a row, catching a free throw line shot at its apex, tossing around giant players like Wes Unseld like a rag doll, etc. Rare highlights but incredible the ones that do exist. @@SDesWriter

Wilt is an enigma to me. There are folks who saw him play that agree with you, some even say he is the GOAT. But the limited footage I've seen, he doesn't seem like this mythical strongman figure people describe. I also don't like that he didn't show up to face Kareem on their one on one match up. Wilt to me was an incredible athlete, competed in high jump, had an incredible vertical for a big man. Wilt was more busy with women, and didn't have the killer instinct in my opinion. Neither Wilt or Shaq would be on my team of 12.

Wilt was 7'1" barefoot, Shaq 7'1" in basketball shoes. Wilt's overall frame was bigger than Shaq's, as you can see in videos of the few times they stood next to each other. What's remarkable about that is the fact that Wilt was in his 50's during those meetings, and was still noticeably taller. Wilt was without a doubt on a different level in terms of basketball skill and overall athletic ability.

Conclusion: Wilt's teams can ONLY win if he does not take over the scoring load. Wilt's 7 years of scoring titles only cost his teams.
Wilt FT in the NBA Finals = 124/326, a 38% shooter. Once again, imagine how many close games in the Finals Wilt's bricking cost him?
Only three players have led the NBA in scoring and won the championship the same year. So perhaps it speaks more to the need for a balanced team than something specific about Wilt Chamberlain.

On March 18th, 1968 the NBA's greatest record breaker allegedly did something amazing: a quintuple-double (the first and only one in NBA history).
The NBA didn't count blocks and steals back then so we don't know what his official numbers were. On that day, however, the belief is that Wilt dropped 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 24 blocks, and 11 steals in just a single game. Just the FIRST THREE stats are stupid.... now add the next two. SHIT!! that guy was good.
The first three are no doubt about it. They were published as part of the headline in the Philadelphia Inquirer the day after the game. He absolutely had 53, 32 and 14.
The official scorer was Harvey Pollock. He was also the NBA's official statistician. So even though the blocks and steels weren't official NBA stats at the time, they were actually totaled by the NBA's official statistician who used to sometimes total Chamberlain's blocks and steals just to see what kind of numbers the big guy was piling up.
lars: here's what's really crazy stupid. if wilt was really motivated... he could smoke any stat he wanted to. most of the time he playing about 80%, so he could last the entire game. despite him being everyone's target, he never fouled out of a single game

Jackson omitted the most important aspect of center play and that is, of course, rebounding of which there is no contest. Wilt by a mile in that department. Jackson was being quite diplomatic about this and almost to the point of being disingenuous. Wilt is gone and Shaq is still here. Wilt was, in fact, TWICE as good as Shaq.

How does a man average 27 rebounds a game?? AVERAGE? OMG!! Search on YT "Wilt Chamberlain's INSANE Athleticism Caught on Film" and it shows you everything you need to know about Wilt.
Teams took 115-120FGAs in the 1950s-1960. That’s 30-40 more FGA than the 1980s onward. Hence why all the players to avg 20+ rebounds in a season happened to be from the 1950s-1960s. When avg 24 Rebs. That would be 12 or fewer Rebs today.

The game was different when Wilt 1st came into the league and there were time when team would give Wilts teammates wide open shots and have their entire team guard him. Wilts was the best player to ever play the game. Bill Russell was close because his focus was on winning and he could care less if he ever shot the ball although he was a gifted scorer.
Russel wasn't close. When you look at their head to head matchups, Wilt absolutely dominated Russel. Bill just always had the better teams (4 HoF teammates). He was a perfect fit for that team and because of NBA rules at the time, they stayed together basically their entire careers. It will never happen again that anyone (let alone several players) win double digit championships.
If Phil Jackson says this, then end of conversation. GOAT
Growing up in Philly and watching Chamberlain & Russell battle week after week and into the playoffs,
year after year after year, ruined me for watching the NBA after they were gone.
It has NEVER been the same for me.
It seemed like they played every weekend and we would wait all week for the game to start
and it seemed like EVERY Boston-Philly game was on national TV during that era.
I think they probably played 10-12 games every year because there weren't
many teams in the eastern conference back then.

Fun Fact: A statistitian watched and chronicled over 100 games played by Wilt, before accurate stats were kept on NBA games. According to him, Wilt had several QUADRUPLE-doubles, which included 10 blocks per game. Overall, he AVERAGED 8.8 blocks per game. Had a 50" vertical
i would argue that bill is a slightly better defensive player, but not by much. bill russell is the best defender ever because he’s the smartest defender ever. he didn’t block as many shots as wilt did, not because he couldn’t, but because he was smart with which shots he wanted to block to give his team the offensive advantage. again, wilt was a phenomenal defensive player, but bill russell was slightly better and smarter.

That's why he developed his legendary fall away jumper, because in HS and college the refs would always tag him with BS over the back fouls if he went to the boards hard, so instead he perfected the shot where he fell away backwards from the basket, even though it took him totally out of rebounding position.

Much respect to Wilt, he's one of the all time greats and one of my all-time favorites. But Wilt was much more dominant in the regular season than the playoffs. The year he averaged over 50 ppg, his scoring average dipped to 35 ppg in the playoffs that year. Elgin Baylor averaged over 37 ppg in the playoffs that year with his Lakers team losing to the Celtics in the finals and Wilt's team losing to them in the conference finals. Over his career Wilt averaged 8 ppg less in the playoffs than the regular season. While Wilt is second on the NBA career regular season scoring average list a half point behind Jordan, he dips down to number 40 on the career playoff scoring average list. I have to rank Shaq over Wilt.

Wooden was just an above average coach for his 1st 15 seasons. Auerbach didn't even make it to a conf. final until he got Russell. Jackson didn't exactly terrorize the NBA when he was missing Jordan & later couldn't win without the size of Gasol & Bynum. In Basketball coaches can make a difference only if the player talent is comparable with opponents but none of them are "geniuses".

Shaq’s “signature move” would have got him fouled out of every game prior to 1985. Wilt in his prime could easily score 30+ a night in today’s game. Remember in his era you couldn’t take a step, you couldn’t hand check, you couldn’t even put your hand on the side of the ball on the dribble, you couldn’t shoulder guys underneath (Shaq’s “signature move”), there was no “continuation,” etc. Rules have evolved to make it easier to score, not harder. Huge difference.

Probably both of them could have won the world's strongest man competition if they trained for it unless they competed against each other Shaq would take 2nd place. Wilt also almost dislocated Shaq's shoulder on a handshake when he was in his late 50's or early 60's. WIlt was the Secretariat of humans.
