    Ah Tolkien - yes! I owe my whole book obsession to him, he changed my life. I reread 'Lord of the Rings' & 'The Hobbit' every other year or so, but I do now have a complicated relationship with Tolkien. He was such a rich-wing reactionary. Is he now my guilty secret? Um, it's complicated. I certainly wouldn't choose to live without him. And yes, I love the Peter Jackson films also. Loved this video, name origins are magic. Thank you!

    And Then There Were None raises some very interesting ethical questions and considerations. It's one of my top 4 Agatha Christie novels too.

    Thanks for doing the tag! I think Tolstoy is actually quite easy to read compared to most classics, but I would urge anyone to start with Anna Karenina first, I'm bias because it's one of my favourite books but it's much shorter and W&P has a lot of essay-like bits outside of the story in it. I actually read Egil's Saga a few years ago for sagalong. I loved Piranesi and Middlemarch. I am impressed you have read all of Christie! I think I have about 50 to go.

      Thanks for the recommendation, good to know that it is not necessary difficult to read although it's so long. I will definitely consider reading Anna Karenina first.

    I adore all the Old Norse Sagas. I first discovered the sagas via the English utopian communist & poet, William Morris. I love him, & he was besotted with everything from the North. Then, of course, there's Wagner (a complicated genius, but unforgettable nonetheless). I am reading Susannah Clarke right now, 'Jonathan Strange' at the moment, but I'll get to Piranesi. Thanks for more bookish inspiration.

    I really enjoyed hearing your responses, Bryndis! My favorite book in March was also Middlemarch. And I absolutely agree with you about The Queen of Dirt Island. I adore that novel. I read it for the Book Tube Prize in the Quarterfinal round, and my book group is currently reading it now. Such a beautiful novel. I really loved the character of the mother-in-law! I'm in a booktube group now that is reading Joyce's Ulysses. We do talk about Dubliners now and then, as we move through this giant novel (many of the Dubliners characters reappear in Ulysses), but I agree: there's not much talk about Dubliners here. I think it is my favorite of Joyce's books! I love the story of your name and of Icelandic names in general. Thanks for doing this tag. Wonderful responses!

    Don’t be anxious about tagging people! You can always tag me! 😊 I already have this one on my list though.
    I skipped the parts about Piranesi because I’m only halfway through it and I have so many questions!!!!!! But that is a discussion for another time! 😂
    I’ve been wanting to try Red Rising for so long now! Joffrey is the name your searching for, that is a special kind of hate!
    Aren’t the names in Tolkien’s works inspired by Icelandic names as well? Or Nordic at least, but I think Icelandic in particular?
    I thought of Ronja Rövardotter as one that fits with your channel name 😊

    • @Bryndisdaugtherofgunnar
      @Bryndisdaugtherofgunnar  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The joy I felt when Joffrey was killed in GoT was scary 😜 Tolkien did use old Norse and Nordic mythology and history as a base for his world building. Also Celtic, I think. All the Nordic countries used to have patronyms but at some point back in the day the other countries changed and most took the names of their farms to be their family names. Something like that. I don't know why we didn't do that here in Iceland. We were so isolated, maybe we just didn't know that that was something people did 😂

      Yes, that! 😊 What’s the difference between Norse and Nordic?
      Haha yes, you missed the new trend 😂 My mother actually had a patronym as a last middle name, or like, before her family surname. I always thought that was so beautiful and wished I had that too. I wouldn’t work well with my father’s name though, so I guess I’m also glad I don’t 😂

    • @Bryndisdaugtherofgunnar
      @Bryndisdaugtherofgunnar  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not very knowledgeable about different translations but a guy named William Morris translated them into English and his translation is considered very good. I also think there are Penguin editions of some of the sagas.
