I have the last three years as well. The Silmarillion too. I love what was said about Middle Earth being about home but it's a home I feel exiled from and yearn to return to so rereading about it has to suffice for now.
@@elizaj4431 that’s a profoundly subtle observation. Life often feels like the plains of gorgoroth and our hearts yearn, like you say, for The Shire. I’m sure Tolkien’s Christianity informed some of that infusion in his mythology.

It has enhanced my reading of that first chapter a great deal. And it will be a great deal more pleasurable knowing others like you will be joining in!
I know Alan Lee is the most popular illustrator of Tolkien, having done the design work for Jackson's trilogy, but I feel that the Brothers Hildebrand capture the spirit of Middle Earth much more closely.
My mother agrees with you. I’ve never been terribly fond of the Hildebrand style of illustration. I believe Tolkien was alive to see them. I wonder what he thought of them.
Awesome edition! Also, do you recall the brand and series of pipe you have there? I've been looking for a churchwarden of that size and length for a long time. Thank you.
I actually thought this was going to be about a wolfhound from the thumbnail... Very beautiful edition--I want it like Pippin wanted to look into the Palantir.
If you read 2-3 pages a day, then you can read the book within a year, which is how long the story took. And then you start again. Bonus points for people who wait 17 years after the first chapter to continue reading.

Lovely edition ! Don’t think I would be getting it myself, since I mostly read in the bath tub and the steam would probably mess it up haha.

What pipe and what tobacco?
The pipe is a Peterson church warden (I think it’s the D6 rusticated) and the tobacco is Peterson’s Nightcap
@MrDavidBarr Thanks! I was guessing Peterson...but not confidently! I have not tried Nightcap. Subscribed!
