Nicole, you aren't "lucky" to have no car payment. You are wise and chose accordingly. Don't diminish your good choices when so many make poor choices. It's all about priorities.

    • @AccordingtoNicole
      @AccordingtoNicole  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

It’s also about having the information to be able to make good choices. And that is a privilege. I was taught not to take on debt as a kid. For many families, a car payment is very normal and all they’ve ever known.

    • @paigeparker146
      @paigeparker146 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@AccordingtoNicole Definitely agree but at some point we all become responsible for ourselves. I see so many people say they can't do this or afford that while they would be easily capable of it if that was their priority. Of course, I'm not referring to those struggling to survive but there are an awful lot of people who have a hard time because they care what others think or think they deserve things. I sometimes feel like living standards have become downright absurd. Love your channel and it's good to see younger people embracing some of these principles 💜

Loved this video. I live in Seattle and with Rent and keeping my expenses as low as I can I spend about $3000 in total a month. Thankfully I found an apartment were the rent is income based. I am a single mom. I’d say the places where I over spend are on coffee out but for my sanity I find value in it. And I of course will spend over to have a fun experience with my child. I splurged and bought him a bike at Christmas and so now I chase him around our neighborhood. Time with him and activities like reading and going to library and parks are a huge gift and require no money. I also want to say that my child needs his own room as he’s growing up and my bedroom is in the living room. Lol. Just for some context. I really enjoy your videos! Thank you. ❤

I’m with you on the no pet insurance. I never wanted to have an insurance company decide what I can “pay for” and what I can’t so to speak. We just decided when our old dog was young to put the money we’d spend on doggo insurance into her own “bank account” 😂. Up till she was 10 we really didn’t need to touc it. Very fortunate but no regrets on no insurance if I’m honest, even w our second more problematic pup !
Edit: damn your doggo so cute !

Thank you so much for sharing! It really helped show me just how much money I waste, especially on food. I’m single and budget for $400 a month in food and still end up going over because of eating out and getting coffee out. I’ve reached the point where I’ve gotten tired of my own shit and realized how much I need to actually stick to my budget and focus on making 90% of my food at home.

Wow! Good job on groceries. Maybe you could do a video on how you manage to keep it so low.
I live in an area of the States that is comparable to your cost of living. I live in a single family home in a beach area. I purchased my home 10 years ago. I support one other person and a 11 yo. dog. My expenses are about $5,000. That leaves no room for vacations, extraneous shopping… I am frugal in all areas but food. Entertainment is eating out and take out. I need to rein it in. My health could benefit from discipline in this area too.

Thanks for sharing! I always get curious on other people's spending! I'll share mines, I live alone in a good area in Berlin/Germany, and have a 500sqft brand new appartment:
Housing (everything included, even electricity): 1350€ (around average for the location, it used to be a way less, 5y ago nobody paid over 1k for an appartament like mine in Berlin)
    Health Insurance: 300€
Transportation: 49€ (public transport ticket valid all over Germany)
    Grosseries: 180€
Household: 80€ (had to buy a new coffee table)
    Restaurants/entertainment: 170€
    Phone/internet: 45€
    Other insurances: 40€
Shopping/misc: around 400€ (bought some electronics on prime day, not usual spending haha)
Total: around 2600 or 2200 without the prime day splurge, minimum wage in Germany is 12€ an hour just for comparison
(so I'm a little over the budget if I just got a minimum wage but minimum wage workers also pay less on health insurance)

Hi Nicole, thanks for this video about your expenses for July. I really like how you have organised your categories and, after seeing yours, I am considering changing ours to a similar framework. This will mean that we make some extra effort to divide household items such as toilet paper, paper towel etc from the grocery bill by buying them in some other way or separately at the check out (we will have to see what is easiest). We don't have a Costco nearby and I know that you have to be careful with that as it is not always cheaper. Toiletries are another item that, for us, sometimes get muddled into groceries and other times into our medical/health category as we sometimes purchase them at a chemist when we are buying medical products because it is convenient or because there is a deal going. Wee buy wild bird seed and have an outdoor fish pond which cost us some money each month, and the pond has had one large repair done a couple of years back, but as you say, they bring so much joy to our day-to-day lives. It is great to see how others structure their expenses tracking and I thank you for opening up to us about yours. See you on Tuesday.

I can definitely relate to being house poor after buying a house earlier this year in south FL (also a high cost of living area). But my husband and I don't spend a lot outside of our needs. No car payments, but I do have some student debt (that fortunately my company helps reimburse the majority of it each month). We eat out once a week. He has a company car so gas is paid for and I'm basically a hermit because I work remotely. 😅 Our 11 year old cat had a lot of health expenses but sadly she passed a few weeks ago and our 7 year old pup is a healthy girl. No kids currently. I'd say we are in a pretty good position. I would love to refinance when the economy is in a better position however. 😊

I enjoy seeing what others expenses are. We bought a condo this year. We live in Delaware USA. Our mortgage, taxes, insurance, and HOA run us $1863 a month. Rents for our area are from $1600 to $3500 depending on what kind of home, condo, or apartment you need. Our mortgage is higher than what we were paying in rent but it’s so nice that it’s ours and I can do whatever I want to it. We spend about $4500 to $5000 a month total. Thanks for sharing your expenses in the monthly and overall way! I think it's very helpful and good to add to your other content. Me, I live in what was once a LCOL city (Tucson, AZ), but recently has gone up quite a bit. I also live very centrally and by the University. But, I house hack - own a duplex and live in half, so my numbers are very unusual and hard to quantify. Like, I have low monthly you cost on paper for housing but I manage all the costs for both units and thats a large liability for if things like plumbing or HVAC have problems, as you know. For transportation I'm also very unusual in that I choose to not have a car. I have tradeoffs in both these areas that majority would not accept. For food the big cost for all places is eating out vs cooking almost all your meals. For many reasons my numbers would not be representative of the average. Maybe by your next monthly I'll have come up with some figures and share them.

Would love to know your thoughts about the push towards electric vehicles. It seems the cost of an electric vehicle is out of reach for most average Americans. It seems the electric vehicles that are being manufactured is not for the "average" consumer and instead would require a huge amount of debt to purchase one. I drive a ten year old Toyota and would not be able to afford the electric vehicles that are on the lots. Wondering your thoughts on that.. thanks again for a great video

If you are saving money and investing, eventually you’ll need a newer car and you will be able to cover it, even if it is making payments. When you pay off your mortgage, you will feel rich. But if you continue to save and invest you really will get rich by not having a mortgage. Renting is for people who can’t envision themselves ever paying anything off or saving and investing. I’ve found that people who rent are people who are concerned with what others think. They are constantly looking around for consensus and validation. If you want to live like no other, than you have to not give an f what others are doing. Stay busy, have a goal and don’t let anyone derail you.

We live in the New Jersey suburbs and the cost of living is fairly high being in between NYC and Philadelphia. We don't rent, but the average rent here is about 2,500, so comparable to where you are.
We are homebodies, so our home is very important to us as well. We put a lot of work and expense into our home and it makes sense since this is where we spend most of our time.
We have 3 cats and pay about $350 per month on pet insurance. We have one cat with vestibular issues and one who is a cancer survivor who needs routine checkups and maintenance chemo. We could put the money away in a pet fund, but this just makes sense to us. If they suggest an expensive test which may or may not help, it's a no brainer. We just get it done. To us, the expense is just worth the peace of mind.

Vaasa, FI $325 including parking space, water, heating, internet, sewage, trash, snow removal, etc. I have no mortgage and property tax is non existent, own land. While Vaasa is not a major city but a big enough city with public transportation, bike lanes, clubs, bars, beach town, universities, airport that fly directly to major cities like Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm, even SFO, Oslo, etc. it would cost me the same in Helsinki if I were to relocate around $325 a month for housing because I choose to buy a home with cash.

Actually when you said mortgage total, I was like oh that's pretty reasonable. Now IDK how big your space is or rooms, but for something that is your I don't think that's bad and it will go down when you pay off your line of credit. I also live in NYC, so maintenance is right now on most things that I can afford is to buy at least 1k. I'd want at least a 2 bd and that's close to 4k.I pay 1600 for rent in NYC for a 1 bedroom, but it's also rent stabilized and v updated. I got lucky.

I live about 35-45 minutes from Kansas City in the US.
My mortgage is $600 a month (this includes the taxes and homeowners insurance). My house is 3 bedroom (1124 sq feet)- adding this because housing varies a lot depending how big your house is, how nice it is, and your neighborhood (my neighborhood is okay, but not in a rich part of town at all. And it’s a duplex, not a standalone house). If I add in utilities with it like you did (gas-$86, electric-$65, water-$100.27), then it totals $851.27 a month (though there are 2 of us- my boyfriend and I). Unfortunately I also have an HOA. So that’s an additional $50 a month for HOA costs and for 2023-2024, HOA insurance of $827.50 (yearly cost and it’s billed to us yearly). My car insurance is $93.10 a month (full coverage. My car is 6 years old and it’s paid off). Cell is $93.33 a month (just me on the plan). Internet is $76.98 a month.
Now that my work made me go back into the office (43 minute drive each way and I work 4 days a week) that’s about $28 per week in gas for my car (to get to and from work only; no other driving).
My boyfriend lives with me and we budget $800 a month towards groceries/TP (though he really only eats at home for dinner as he eats out for lunch while he’s at work M-Fri and he pays for that out of his own money. And we eat out dinners 2-3 times a week (on weekends ) - also not included in the grocery money (we take turns paying for eating out. He pays 2 times, then I pay once, then it’s back to him paying for us to eat out twice - this is due to he makes a lot more than me though not quite twice as much as I do (I’m a state employee and he’s a computer programmer).

It looks like $851.27 in US would be 1,143.04 in Canadian Dollars.

To compare a bit more. It looks like her place is 3 bedroom and 2.5 bath? And 1850 sq feet. So her house is quite a bit larger than mine.
And I only have 1.5 bathrooms. My place isn’t as nice as hers is either (before or after her renovations). So this is probably part of her increased housing costs over mine as well.
(Her housing costs alone is just a bit less than 40 hours a week at my job pays for my take home pay). I wouldn’t be able to afford her house on my pay (when converting her house costs to US money and what I make) as it would only leave me like $200-300 a month for anything else.
Unfortunately, due to health issues I’m not currently able to work my full 40 a week either (I have FMLA-family medical leave act- which allows me to miss some hours at work when my health issues are bad.

Geez. That’s a lot. I actually bought my place (I’m about 35-45 minutes from Kansas City). And tbh my mortgage is cheaper than 3 bedroom houses rent for here. Though if things break, I have to figure it out myself (I did have to play a plumber twice this year. $696 total). And since living here I had to pay repairs for the Ac two times, then replace it (wish I would have realized how old it was and just went for a new one the first time it needed repairs as the repairs both times were more than half what a new unit cost me (for it and to be installed). Then the heater had issues and I had to pay for a new heater and it to be installed. Luckily, those are the main repairs I’ve had done since living here for like 4-5 years. Though I did have the outside of my place painted twice too (unfortunately I have an HOA and if they come inspect, I have to get anything done that they say- hence the painting the outside of my place twice. ).

Btw, you didn't include a savings/investing category in your spending recap. Do you allocate a fixed amount per month for RRSP or TFSA?
