As an 'older' woman I grew up with parents who were in their teens during WW2, so having to be very frugal during that time, my parents learned never to be wasteful. The motto was: "Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without". We learned to sew, mend, iron, bring our shoes to a shoemaker, take care of our clothes, and of course use up leftovers. Now in these ridiculously expensive economic times, me and my sisters - all with families - are not feeling terribly deprived of much since we have always learned to be thrifty wherever it's practical. Good lessons for all times and situations.

I rejected plastic storage containers in my kitchen for 20+ years. My wife eventually convinced me to get a big variety package of plastic bags. That was about 7 years ago. I'm glad I did. I don't use them much, and I often reuse them many times before I throw them out. I still have that same jumbo pack of plastic bags that I believe cost about $8. I never microwave anything in plastic.
same here. In a typical week, I get like 10 books from the library and usually at least 3-4 of those are literally brand new releases that cost over 30 bucks new
I agree with most of what you said, and don't buy a lot of things you don't buy or pay for, but I can't understand the judgment for others who do. For instance, to many people getting a card with a well-thought out message means a lot, and you can get cards fairly cheap at the dollar store. Also with Uber, I have a car and don't use Uber regularly, but I've done it a few times when my car was in the shop and no one was available to shuttle me back and forth to the mechanic's. There are a lot of good reasons for using them besides going out and getting plastered! ;) I think you are very wise beyond your years about money, but tolerance for people who are doing their best and not hurting anyone is an important lesson as well. Just MHO.

About the Holiday decor. Most of us that do it either have children or enjoy the aesthetic of it. I agree that it can get expensive easily but my family finds the challenge fun. Every year we make a new piece of decoration. So everything is DIY, cheap, and full of fun memories. just my two cents.
Yes to most of it! Agree with all points in principle, however I often buy new books from the local bookstore. I think bookstores are worth supporting because they often also do a lot to promote reading and for the community.
Libraries - lots of libraries have a certain amount of e-books, with an app to read them. It's great if you're on a reading kick, because you can literally borrow a book at 2am if you're in the mood. Also if you forget to return them, they just automatically go back at the end of the borrowing period. I like physical books too, but it can be a pain to keep going back/forth to the library if you're getting through a lot of books.
My husband and I have been going to libraries our whole life we've never encountered any smelly or tattered books. They go through the books pretty often and they give away the damaged ones for free. I've gotten tons of free books from the library.!!
I get books, magazines, DVDs from the library. NEVER are they even slightly damaged or smell bad. I will say my huge public library is 2 miles from my house and workplace so it's really very convenient. They also have fun free programs for adults like bingo with real prizes, 3D printer makerspace, author visits, art exhibits, free yoga twice a month, book swaps and so much more.
I sound so obsessed with libraries haha but they also have in addition to e-books a connection to something called Kanopy where you can stream 4 free movies every month just with a library card.
I agree with the vast majority of these things you listed (not spending money on). Sometimes I do spend money on some of these items, but its never on a regular basis and I am always looking for ways to save money. When, I needed prescription eyeglasses (I bought Reading glasses at a pharmacy for $10, they were essentially the same frames you buy at optical place for $50 or more) and I just removed the lenses. I take the frames to an optical store and I get a quote on new frames plus lenses first. Then I tell them I am on a budget and ask how much just for the lenses if I provide my own frames (Its always cheaper, I don't care what they say on their advertisement material).
I stop my consumerism yesterday. I didn't go to the supermarket today, i didn't buy a latte, i ate whatever was going off soon in the fridge. I feel great. Let's hope this lasts. Only buying milk and petrol from now on.
We do not buy a lot of these things. Great video! Some other items I don't buy or buy VERY rarely are paper towels, paper napkins, disposable plates and cups. It is so easy to use dish towels, rags, and proper cloth napkins and I prefer it by far. We go through about 2 rolls of paper towels per year in my household and most people I know go through that in a week.
Regina Fisher, I used to agree that Goodwill was a good place to shop. However when I learned that their CEO makes millions and he pays his employees below minimum wage, I stopped donating to them. I donate to my little local thrift stores now.

My cousin works at a Goodwill, I have friends that work at Goodwill, I know they don't make a whole lot but I don't think it's below the minimum wage. It's still keeps a lot of garbage that would be in a landfill out of one, I get what you mean by donating to a local thrift shop instead, the thing is they just don't get as much foot traffic most of them, I had a lady I was donating to, she just had to close her doors, she got plenty of stuff dropped off , it became a hoarded up situation, and she couldn't get rid of all the free stuff,lol, everyone has too much of everything. Goodwill does employ a lot of people, and help people with records get jobs.
I'm wondering if you have actually ever been in an out house, I have, and I can tell you that bath & body candles do not smell like that outhouse I used to have to go to. I remember when my grandparents got plumbing I also remember having to go to the outhouse a lot. I don't think you would be able to handle it if you think bath and body candles smell like an outhouse.
I don’t buy art work. I paint & frame my own landscapes. I display only the pieces I’m proud of. The rest of the canvases are recycled/repainted until I get a good result. The knicknacks in my house either mean something or are made by a local artisan. No junk in my house.

I think you have touch of knowing the price of everything but not the value of anything. People have Knick knacks in their homes for emotional reason in that they represent something - a person, a past event, a meaningful event. They maybe trash to some but gold to them; it is what being human is. Also some people (men and women) need make-up for their egos and self confidence; it gets them through life and a crutch it maybe but it is important for them. Otherwise you make an awful lot of good sense - fast fashion, books, anniversary cards etc. Thank you.
Interesting. I agree with a lot of what you said. But some people are soothed and comforted by some essential oil smells. Some don’t use that to “cover up” other smells. I can’t explain why, but the smell of spearmint essential oil relaxes me and is better than any anti anxiety pill out there.
Cards are 50 cents a piece at Dollar tree, my mom always sends me a Halloween card a Valentine's Day card a Thanksgiving Day card a Christmas card. She decorates it with stickers, I started doing the same thing and return and sending cards to her and my sister who lives in California, it's fun getting actual mail. Only the girls do it in the family for each other it makes us feel special. We like to hang our cards on the refrigerator and look at them for about a month, I then save all of the cards, it's fun to look back through the cards and see what that person wrote to you.
I will make mine for people I care about and I also keep ones from people I care about. For Christmas cards I also end up cutting them up into my next years Christmas labels with scissors and a hole punch and put "To and From" on them and they look glittery, Christmassy, and amazing.

If you want your house to smell nice it doesn't mean that your house needs cleaning. Sometimes it's nice to buy and live a little. No need for bad language. While some of this is truly sensible, I think digging that deep is a little much. Sometimes it's just nice to buy things you want because it makes you feel good. Living a little close to the bone.

The last car I purchased was in 2020 and it was a 2018 Ford Escape with only 5,000 miles. It still had the brand-new smell to it, turns out it was leased and the people rarely drove it. I saved 50% on the new price. A year later I paid off the 20K so I don't have a car payment and this is a vehicle I will drive until it doesn't move. I think the only thing of these 20 I do purchase is bottled water. I'm on the road a lot and it's very convenient for me.
I do most of these things. I had my iPhone 7 until yesterday. And ran all my businesses through it, too. But it finally conked out. I need my camera function for two of my businesses. So, the upgrade is actually a tax deduction. And it saves me money, because I would have had to pay for a professional photographer to take pictures of the units I rent out.
Totally agree with all the points you made. I love the shirts you wear and was wondering where you got them. I know you did make a reference to buying them at Old Navy in one of your videos (unless I'm mistaken), but I love simple clothes too, and also only wear jeans and shop at thrift stores. One of my pet peeves is air fresheners for sure, I always yell at the TV, "Open a freakin' window!". I hate the idea of all those chemicals floating around in the air.
Good list! I do enjoy essential oils, but I don't buy a bunch. Essential oils have health benefits, so it's not about covering up a smell in my home. What clothing brands do you shop? I saw you wearing Nudie Jeans in one video. Also, you don't buy cosmetics, what about skin care products? SPF, moisturizers, etc?
I am in my seventies, come from a house of substance abuse and violence. My relatives would do nothing, and schools and Gov't offices would just phone my house. So I've been on my own since 10. I learned very fast how to survive by relying on myself. You are wiser than 99% of people!!!!! Have as little as possible to do with them. I had a vasectomy as a young man, always lived alone, and been honest with all my girlfriends. Yes, it was not easy when some I loved broke it off to go have children, or just wanted to live with/marry someone. I have had a great life, and very happy to be me😁
Love the Honda vs Mercedes example. I used to drive a hammy down Mercedes and I hated it. It was expensive to maintain and I didn't like the kind attention it gave me (even the supposed positive because it was shallow). As soon as it kicked the bucket, I got a much cheaper Honda and I'm so much happier with it.
I have some Anchor Hocking food storage. The plastic lids on them warp and distort in the microwave, dishwasher, etc. I have also bought some Pyrex glass storage, and the plastic lids are as good as new after years of use. Rubbermaid also makes good quality glass storage. I must add that I also have Tupperware that is literally decades old and still quite serviceable - and it tolerates microwaving and dishwashing better than the Anchor Hocking lids. Plastic Rubbermaid storage is also long lived.
Laughed when you spoke about not buying a new car- I never have, and still drive a 26-year old Honda. Unfortunately, we can no longer buy the spare parts to fix it as little things go. The engine is sound as ever, of course!
I have a 2015 civic, about 140k miles rn. I stress about having get another car I never want to buy another one and a new car off the lot is just.... it's a scam and I'm not stupid.

I switched from using a lot of plastic storage bags for storing food to reusable plastic containers. I'm going to move to those glass containers when the current ones wear out. Thanks. Oh, and there's some relatively recent science on this - microwaving food in plastic is horrifically bad for you!
Not buying bottled water is a privilege. We have a filtration system for our well water. We've tried Brita filter products. Our water is still horrible. It's been tested and it's safe to drink. But it has such high mineral content that it tastes awful. We can't stomach it. And we're blessed to even have safe tap water. There's a lot of people who don't even have that.

Great video, I agree with you on most things, but then I believe I have a similar personality to you. Just for example I live alone and have little need for other people--does that sound familiar? What I am saying is give a bit of slack for “normal “ people. They may need things that you or I find unnecessary or frivolous. I love your little dog-so cute. you should do a video all about him/her. How did you get him? The cost of keeping him,etc, Do you consider him a luxury? and all that?
I was a big early adopter of new tech. I am still an enthusiast, but I no longer upgrade quite so regularly, knowing now of the e-waste problems. Instead, I replace items when they break, or if the upgrade offers compelling new functionality that would be of genuine benefit. If the newest thing is just the same thing but slightly faster, then I am better off saving my money and not adding more stuff to junk piles overseas.
As a professional organizer, I was helping a client once declutter her space and convinced her to give up the swan planter she had in her backyard. Her mother came over a few days later and saw that it was gone. She had given the planter to her daughter as a gift. The mother never spoke to me again%!

Decorating for a holiday is a must for me. Without any kind of outward signs, what would make any holiday special? Yes, so much of it is a commercial scam. There's a sugar rush for every holiday, along with paper and plastic crap we hang on walls and our doors, but some of it is very nice when done tastefully. I suppose you could attempt to psychoanalyze the reasons why people need all of this stuff, but there's no doubt it does improve people's mood.
I think your list of items to not buy was well thought out and made perfect sense. If more people would listen to your advice they would be able to save more of what they earn.

I listen and do not feel too passionate about any subject, but gym membership is like essential. It depends on what is included. I exercise a lot at home and outdoors, still I need the services of a personal trainer. A good PT is like going to a doctor, sometimes even more.
Massage I think is a luxury and a treat. A professional hair cut is a MUST. Unless you are making it your hobby and doing a lot of research and watching how to videos and really into hair styling, ie you ask strangers "I love your hair who cuts it for you?" 7/10x they do it themselves. Or if your that friend on the side that hooks up your girls and then they say "you got to go get your license!!!"
Relatable but I have always lived in an urban city and have not owned a car. Before the pandemic I would take public transportation (subway/bus) but now I take a cab/taxi. It is actually cheaper for the few places I go to take a cab/taxi over a ride share. Thanks for sharing!!!
The essential oils comment is hilarious and true. I used to work in a yoga studio and they were about extreme minimalism and cleanliness due to allergies etc. but those items pollute the air and do not clean anything for sure!
You are funny I enjoy your good Common sense. I agree with you on most of it, but I must say I love candles because they make me feel cozy and I enjoy rose scented candles. They make me feel happy other than that I also like small gyms that focus on one type of method I love classes I love group exercise because it keeps me motivated because I don’t like to exercise alone except for hiking I’ll do that alone but things like pure barre. It’s a great place because it’s a group exercise that makes you feel good in mind and body and you can actually feel your body getting stronger and looking nicer. I agree about the Starbucks thing to that is so overrated and I just don’t understand it at all why people would pay seven dollars for a Frappuccino ridiculous. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and I’ve learned a lot from you so thank you for putting it out there.
I don't comment very often, but I literally couldn't help myself and laughed when you started talking about candles. I'm trying to eliminate them as well and looking into bees wax candles that are made ethically. By producing negative ions, they help air quality and no weird artificial scents. Who knew! Now, I literally have 2 candles, and that's all I will buy! Save the bees and buy from businesses that want to help the environment and our planet. Love your content!
We bought blue corn and we were not satisfied. I wanted to do the ethical thing as well but they are super super expensive, if you can do that I think it's great. We bought blue corn tea lights it was like $50 for 24 small tea lights they did not burn the way they say they did half of them were wasted.

25 years ago I spent $2.50 on an insulated water jug (that cracked recently.) Amortized, a dime per year. That jug saved me countless purchases of drinks on the fly. The new one is stainless. Spent $18. It should outlive me. And I have a few plastic ones I picked up for cheap . Good for kayaking or other adventures where they might get beaten up or lost
I live in Winnipeg. I have a little suv but only drive when absolutely necessary. Otherwise I bike everywhere, even in winter. I easily save thousands every year. One of the biggest yearly expenses is that thing in the driveway. I have so much more month;y cash now for other things like food , bills and the occasional pedicure.
Nicole, I like your common sense, but I must point something out. Just because YOU see the only reason for an Apple watch being to show off doesn’t make that true in everyone’s mind. Status symbols incredibly differ and I have found that age groups have VERY different status symbols as well. Older friends I have in the 60+ crowd find my status symbol of a 15 to 20 yr old car that I paid cash for to be a phenomenal status symbol and ask how many miles I have on it. In the 20 to 25 age range I am considered "less than" based on my phone still working and doing everything I neeed it to and then some when it's a 6, going on 7 yr old model, but I don't have apps I don't need and I don't have take out apps, Uber Eats, Ride Shares, etc. because I have a fridge and my own paid off car. I have the same case on it all of the time for protection and it doesn't change daily like a set of earrings. My clothes are quality and not fast fashion or big labels across them. To the younger generation I am considered "lower" and I know how much those things cost and what a Need vs a Want is so I am fine with not being in that "cool crowd". It can also vary from person to person regardless of age or means, but these are generalizations I have found. They have the reusable silicone ziplocks now so they can be washed and you no longer need to buy ziplocks. However, if you plants your own garden and process it all some food do better frozen than canned and for those I will use freezer ziplocks over buying frozen vegetables from the store. I also have my own set of lunch/storage containers so whatever I make for a snack, sandwich, salad, soup, etc. I probably have a container for that I will bring it in and bring home and wash. Same with drinks and water bottles. I disagree on some animal products as I have sheep and believe me - they LOVE to be sheared!!!! or they are laying around overheating in the summer as their wool continues to grow so yearly shearing is healthy for them to maintain their body heat in the summer and how we ensure their skin is clear and doesn't get flaky. Lanolin is naturally produced by sheep in their wool, just like if you ran your hand through a humans hair it would have natural oils on it, a sheep's wool has lanolin in it and it makes it resistant to water, makes it soft, moisturizes, and I can run my hands through my sheep's wool and it will come out with lanolin on it just like if I used a hand cream that contained the product and my hands are now moisturized by combing my sheep's wool with my fingers. Same with my friends who have alpacas as they need to be sheared to not overheat. It doesn't mean hurting the animal in any way and we would do more harm to the animal by not shearing them. It's why I buy from QUALITY PRODUCERS who treat their animals extremely well, good feed, very well socialized, well groomed, well maintained space for the animals, etc. Not all animal products are torture. There are marketplaces and web stores for used books. I don't normally purchase a book for my home collection unless I have already read it and know it will be worth keeping to read again otherwise the library works just fine for me.

Yes. The mechanic, the body shop, and the auto parts store are the only places I've used Lyft for.

I bought a French Press on Amazon for $26.00 and the coffee tastes better than Starbucks. The best $26.00 bucks I ever spent!

I agree with the vast majority of these things you listed (not spending money on). Sometimes I do spend money on some of these items, but its never on a regular basis and I am always looking for ways to save money. When, I needed prescription eyeglasses (I bought Reading glasses at a pharmacy for $10, they were essentially the same frames you buy at optical place for $50 or more) and I just removed the lenses. I take the frames to an optical store and I get a quote on new frames plus lenses first. Then I tell them I am on a budget and ask how much just for the lenses if I provide my own frames (Its always cheaper, I don't care what they say on their advertisement material).

I stop my consumerism yesterday. I didn't go to the supermarket today, i didn't buy a latte, i ate whatever was going off soon in the fridge. I feel great. Let's hope this lasts. Only buying milk and petrol from now on.
We do not buy a lot of these things. Great video! Some other items I don't buy or buy VERY rarely are paper towels, paper napkins, disposable plates and cups. It is so easy to use dish towels, rags, and proper cloth napkins and I prefer it by far. We go through about 2 rolls of paper towels per year in my household and most people I know go through that in a week.

Shop at Goodwill recycle reuse don't let things go into the landfill, you can create a great capsule wardrobe from Goodwill.
Regina Fisher, I used to agree that Goodwill was a good place to shop. However when I learned that their CEO makes millions and he pays his employees below minimum wage, I stopped donating to them. I donate to my little local thrift stores now.

My cousin works at a Goodwill, I have friends that work at Goodwill, I know they don't make a whole lot but I don't think it's below the minimum wage. It's still keeps a lot of garbage that would be in a landfill out of one, I get what you mean by donating to a local thrift shop instead, the thing is they just don't get as much foot traffic most of them, I had a lady I was donating to, she just had to close her doors, she got plenty of stuff dropped off , it became a hoarded up situation, and she couldn't get rid of all the free stuff,lol, everyone has too much of everything. Goodwill does employ a lot of people, and help people with records get jobs.
I'm wondering if you have actually ever been in an out house, I have, and I can tell you that bath & body candles do not smell like that outhouse I used to have to go to. I remember when my grandparents got plumbing I also remember having to go to the outhouse a lot. I don't think you would be able to handle it if you think bath and body candles smell like an outhouse.

I don’t buy art work. I paint & frame my own landscapes. I display only the pieces I’m proud of. The rest of the canvases are recycled/repainted until I get a good result. The knicknacks in my house either mean something or are made by a local artisan. No junk in my house.
That Live Laugh Love comment made made me spit my tea across the room and the gum membership experience too. You could write comedy. I do laugh a lot about the ridiculous cons women buy into. I would feel like a fool walking past a homeless person carrying a designer purse in my Ralph Lauren boots. Life can be a freak show!
I think you have touch of knowing the price of everything but not the value of anything. People have Knick knacks in their homes for emotional reason in that they represent something - a person, a past event, a meaningful event. They maybe trash to some but gold to them; it is what being human is. Also some people (men and women) need make-up for their egos and self confidence; it gets them through life and a crutch it maybe but it is important for them. Otherwise you make an awful lot of good sense - fast fashion, books, anniversary cards etc. Thank you.

Interesting. I agree with a lot of what you said. But some people are soothed and comforted by some essential oil smells. Some don’t use that to “cover up” other smells. I can’t explain why, but the smell of spearmint essential oil relaxes me and is better than any anti anxiety pill out there.
Cards are 50 cents a piece at Dollar tree, my mom always sends me a Halloween card a Valentine's Day card a Thanksgiving Day card a Christmas card. She decorates it with stickers, I started doing the same thing and return and sending cards to her and my sister who lives in California, it's fun getting actual mail. Only the girls do it in the family for each other it makes us feel special. We like to hang our cards on the refrigerator and look at them for about a month, I then save all of the cards, it's fun to look back through the cards and see what that person wrote to you.

I will make mine for people I care about and I also keep ones from people I care about. For Christmas cards I also end up cutting them up into my next years Christmas labels with scissors and a hole punch and put "To and From" on them and they look glittery, Christmassy, and amazing.

If you want your house to smell nice it doesn't mean that your house needs cleaning. Sometimes it's nice to buy and live a little. No need for bad language. While some of this is truly sensible, I think digging that deep is a little much. Sometimes it's just nice to buy things you want because it makes you feel good. Living a little close to the bone.

The last car I purchased was in 2020 and it was a 2018 Ford Escape with only 5,000 miles. It still had the brand-new smell to it, turns out it was leased and the people rarely drove it. I saved 50% on the new price. A year later I paid off the 20K so I don't have a car payment and this is a vehicle I will drive until it doesn't move. I think the only thing of these 20 I do purchase is bottled water. I'm on the road a lot and it's very convenient for me.
I do most of these things. I had my iPhone 7 until yesterday. And ran all my businesses through it, too. But it finally conked out. I need my camera function for two of my businesses. So, the upgrade is actually a tax deduction. And it saves me money, because I would have had to pay for a professional photographer to take pictures of the units I rent out.
If you aren’t in an area that someone can give you a ride, an Uber to the airport can save you a bunch over parking at the airport.
Wool doesn’t harm the animal they need it cut and nothing keeps you warmer on a cold winter day.
Totally agree with all the points you made. I love the shirts you wear and was wondering where you got them. I know you did make a reference to buying them at Old Navy in one of your videos (unless I'm mistaken), but I love simple clothes too, and also only wear jeans and shop at thrift stores. One of my pet peeves is air fresheners for sure, I always yell at the TV, "Open a freakin' window!". I hate the idea of all those chemicals floating around in the air.
Good list! I do enjoy essential oils, but I don't buy a bunch. Essential oils have health benefits, so it's not about covering up a smell in my home.

I am in my seventies, come from a house of substance abuse and violence. My relatives would do nothing, and schools and Gov't offices would just phone my house. So I've been on my own since 10. I learned very fast how to survive by relying on myself. You are wiser than 99% of people!!!!! Have as little as possible to do with them.
I had a vasectomy as a young man, always lived alone, and been honest with all my girlfriends. Yes, it was not easy when some I loved broke it off to go have children, or just wanted to live with/marry someone. I have had a great life, and very happy to be me😁
Love the Honda vs Mercedes example. I used to drive a hammy down Mercedes and I hated it. It was expensive to maintain and I didn't like the kind attention it gave me (even the supposed positive because it was shallow). As soon as it kicked the bucket, I got a much cheaper Honda and I'm so much happier with it.

I have some Anchor Hocking food storage. The plastic lids on them warp and distort in the microwave, dishwasher, etc. I have also bought some Pyrex glass storage, and the plastic lids are as good as new after years of use. Rubbermaid also makes good quality glass storage. I must add that I also have Tupperware that is literally decades old and still quite serviceable - and it tolerates microwaving and dishwashing better than the Anchor Hocking lids. Plastic Rubbermaid storage is also long lived.

Laughed when you spoke about not buying a new car- I never have, and still drive a 26-year old Honda. Unfortunately, we can no longer buy the spare parts to fix it as little things go. The engine is sound as ever, of course!
I have a 2015 civic, about 140k miles rn. I stress about having get another car I never want to buy another one and a new car off the lot is just.... it's a scam and I'm not stupid.

I switched from using a lot of plastic storage bags for storing food to reusable plastic containers. I'm going to move to those glass containers when the current ones wear out. Thanks.
Oh, and there's some relatively recent science on this - microwaving food in plastic is horrifically bad for you!
Not buying bottled water is a privilege. We have a filtration system for our well water. We've tried Brita filter products. Our water is still horrible. It's been tested and it's safe to drink. But it has such high mineral content that it tastes awful. We can't stomach it. And we're blessed to even have safe tap water. There's a lot of people who don't even have that.
Great video, lots of good advice. With few exceptions, I also do not spend money on the thi gs you mention. Doing so affords me the opportunity to work less and spend more time enjoying life.

Lots of local thrift stores have good books… I make a list of ones I’m interested in and see if they have them.
I was a big early adopter of new tech. I am still an enthusiast, but I no longer upgrade quite so regularly, knowing now of the e-waste problems. Instead, I replace items when they break, or if the upgrade offers compelling new functionality that would be of genuine benefit. If the newest thing is just the same thing but slightly faster, then I am better off saving my money and not adding more stuff to junk piles overseas.
As a professional organizer, I was helping a client once declutter her space and convinced her to give up the swan planter she had in her backyard. Her mother came over a few days later and saw that it was gone. She had given the planter to her daughter as a gift. The mother never spoke to me again%!

Holiday decorations now for me are only things I can get from the woods and then oranges and cinnamon sticks, lemons, acorns, artichokes, pomegranites. its festive and can be eaten later.

Decorating for a holiday is a must for me. Without any kind of outward signs, what would make any holiday special? Yes, so much of it is a commercial scam. There's a sugar rush for every holiday, along with paper and plastic crap we hang on walls and our doors, but some of it is very nice when done tastefully. I suppose you could attempt to psychoanalyze the reasons why people need all of this stuff, but there's no doubt it does improve people's mood.

I listen and do not feel too passionate about any subject, but gym membership is like essential. It depends on what is included. I exercise a lot at home and outdoors, still I need the services of a personal trainer. A good PT is like going to a doctor, sometimes even more.
Spending on self care such as a professional haircut or a massage occasionally is not necessarily frugal but it is worth it.
I get my haircut like twice a year.
Massage I think is a luxury and a treat. A professional hair cut is a MUST. Unless you are making it your hobby and doing a lot of research and watching how to videos and really into hair styling, ie you ask strangers "I love your hair who cuts it for you?" 7/10x they do it themselves. Or if your that friend on the side that hooks up your girls and then they say "you got to go get your license!!!"
Relatable but I have always lived in an urban city and have not owned a car. Before the pandemic I would take public transportation (subway/bus) but now I take a cab/taxi. It is actually cheaper for the few places I go to take a cab/taxi over a ride share. Thanks for sharing!!!
The essential oils comment is hilarious and true. I used to work in a yoga studio and they were about extreme minimalism and cleanliness due to allergies etc. but those items pollute the air and do not clean anything for sure!

You are funny I enjoy your good Common sense. I agree with you on most of it, but I must say I love candles because they make me feel cozy and I enjoy rose scented candles. They make me feel happy other than that I also like small gyms that focus on one type of method I love classes I love group exercise because it keeps me motivated because I don’t like to exercise alone except for hiking I’ll do that alone but things like pure barre. It’s a great place because it’s a group exercise that makes you feel good in mind and body and you can actually feel your body getting stronger and looking nicer. I agree about the Starbucks thing to that is so overrated and I just don’t understand it at all why people would pay seven dollars for a Frappuccino ridiculous. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and I’ve learned a lot from you so thank you for putting it out there.

I don't comment very often, but I literally couldn't help myself and laughed when you started talking about candles. I'm trying to eliminate them as well and looking into bees wax candles that are made ethically. By producing negative ions, they help air quality and no weird artificial scents. Who knew! Now, I literally have 2 candles, and that's all I will buy! Save the bees and buy from businesses that want to help the environment and our planet. Love your content!

We bought blue corn and we were not satisfied. I wanted to do the ethical thing as well but they are super super expensive, if you can do that I think it's great. We bought blue corn tea lights it was like $50 for 24 small tea lights they did not burn the way they say they did half of them were wasted.

25 years ago I spent $2.50 on an insulated water jug (that cracked recently.) Amortized, a dime per year. That jug saved me countless purchases of drinks on the fly. The new one is stainless. Spent $18. It should outlive me. And I have a few plastic ones I picked up for cheap . Good for kayaking or other adventures where they might get beaten up or lost

Otherwise I bike everywhere, even in winter. I easily save thousands every year. One of the biggest yearly expenses is that thing in the driveway. I have so much more month;y cash now for other things like food , bills and the occasional pedicure.
Nicole, I like your common sense, but I must point something out. Just because YOU see the only reason for an Apple watch being to show off doesn’t make that true in everyone’s mind. I like the easy phone functionality there on my wrist, as I have great disdain for getting phones out of my pockets all the time. Keep it up. I hope for your continued success.
Status symbols incredibly differ and I have found that age groups have VERY different status symbols as well. Older friends I have in the 60+ crowd find my status symbol of a 15 to 20 yr old car that I paid cash for to be a phenomenal status symbol and ask how many miles I have on it.
In the 20 to 25 age range I am considered "less than" based on my phone still working and doing everything I neeed it to and then some when it's a 6, going on 7 yr old model, but I don't have apps I don't need and I don't have take out apps, Uber Eats, Ride Shares, etc. because I have a fridge and my own paid off car. I have the same case on it all of the time for protection and it doesn't change daily like a set of earrings. My clothes are quality and not fast fashion or big labels across them. To the younger generation I am considered "lower" and I know how much those things cost and what a Need vs a Want is so I am fine with not being in that "cool crowd".
It can also vary from person to person regardless of age or means, but these are generalizations I have found.
They have the reusable silicone ziplocks now so they can be washed and you no longer need to buy ziplocks. However, if you plants your own garden and process it all some food do better frozen than canned and for those I will use freezer ziplocks over buying frozen vegetables from the store.
I also have my own set of lunch/storage containers so whatever I make for a snack, sandwich, salad, soup, etc. I probably have a container for that I will bring it in and bring home and wash. Same with drinks and water bottles.
I disagree on some animal products as I have sheep and believe me - they LOVE to be sheared!!!! or they are laying around overheating in the summer as their wool continues to grow so yearly shearing is healthy for them to maintain their body heat in the summer and how we ensure their skin is clear and doesn't get flaky. Lanolin is naturally produced by sheep in their wool, just like if you ran your hand through a humans hair it would have natural oils on it, a sheep's wool has lanolin in it and it makes it resistant to water, makes it soft, moisturizes, and I can run my hands through my sheep's wool and it will come out with lanolin on it just like if I used a hand cream that contained the product and my hands are now moisturized by combing my sheep's wool with my fingers. Same with my friends who have alpacas as they need to be sheared to not overheat. It doesn't mean hurting the animal in any way and we would do more harm to the animal by not shearing them. It's why I buy from QUALITY PRODUCERS who treat their animals extremely well, good feed, very well socialized, well groomed, well maintained space for the animals, etc. Not all animal products are torture.
There are marketplaces and web stores for used books. I don't normally purchase a book for my home collection unless I have already read it and know it will be worth keeping to read again otherwise the library works just fine for me.
