As my Mother likes to say "You made the right mistakes." Mistakes are how we gain wisdom and you made some good mistakes early on and applied what you learned from them to get where you are now. And now you are sharing them with us so we can learn as well!

    • @laminage

Exactly! we learn from our mistakes and move on. I wish I could talk to myself in my 20's, I am in my 50's now but I would be more candid. Be responsible, save your money, don't lend, manage your finances. I never did anything mucho bad but I am much smarter.

Sell those jeans, there’ll be someone who’ll want them, even with a little hole, and even if you don’t get a lot of money for them, you’ll get something to put towards a pair that fit. Sell that Coach bag too, if you only use it very occasionally, then a cheap, smart bag will do just as well, and won’t have the bad memories associated with it.

I'm a 40 yo female, was married for 12.5 years. I'm 4 years out of my divorce now. Worse time of my life. I fought hard to save my marriage, even after the separation I was still fighting to save it. I was madly in love with my husband. My heart was so broken. I cried night and day, even had to take 1 year off work. I was so sick from the stress and trauma that I didn't think I was going to survive it. The best advice I got was to accept and surrender. I stopped fighting to save it, then accepted and surrendered to my situation. That's when the healing began. I started focusing on healing the trauma, my health, and surrounded myself with friends and family. Be patient with yourself. Stay present, and take it day by day. Focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Everyday that you get up is a success. It might seem so far away from being on the other side of this, but you will get through this. I promise you, the pain gets easier with time. I honestly never thought I could get over that hurt. But I did, I survived...and so will you. Hang in there. Sending you strength.

The worst decision I made was moving to Arkansas during the 2020 covid crisis. I was going to live "rent free" in tiny house on what I was told to be my property. It cost me more than I could afford. Too many mistakes because I did not know myself well enough. The most expensive camping trip I have been on.

The worst financial decision I ever made was to pay for and actually go on a cruise with people I did not know well and did not really care for all to impress the guy who was organizing the whole thing. But I was so miserable the whole time and questioning how I could have possibly made such a horrible bad decision to waste my money!

I’ve made way too many money mistakes but one I will mention is buying and financing a camper. I don’t really like camping but loved it as a kid and so did my husband and we wanted to give our kids the same experience. We do use it every summer but deep down I wish we never bought the thing.

The house mistake... I can relate. My husband's dream was to have a new construction house. We found new development that was being built in a town that I wasn't particularly crazy about. I kept my mouth shut because I wanted my husband to get what he wanted because he works so hard. We had to put our house up for sale in order for the builder to let us pick our lot. Our current house sold in 6 days and we were excited.
A couple days later our lawyer called and advised us not to proceed with the build because something was fishy with the builder. We couldn't back out of the deal because you know how THAT goes. We had originally figured that we would rent something for the 6-12 months it took to build, but now we had to find a house!!! We found one, but the sellers hadn't found a house yet so we had to wait pn them. We waited for a bit and they found a house, but it was going to be 2-3 months until they could close. We don't have any family and nobody else we could stay with, especially not with our 3 cats. Time was ticking and we already pushed out the closing by a month. Our buyer refused to wait any longer. We needed a short term rental QUICK which was next to impossible to find. We were about to be homeless. Talk about a nervous breakdown!!!!! (If you ever feel like talking about that, I'd love to hear it because I've been there!!!)
Anyway, we finally found new townhomes right under the wire that were being rented about an hour away from where we wanted to be. We talked the manager and he agreed to let us rent month to month. I was finally able to breathe!
Had I just had opened my mouth and said I wasn't feeling the area, we wouldn't have ended up in that mess. My husband was also unhappy I didn't say anything about not liking the area. He told me to never bite my tongue again when it comes to something so important!

As far as the jeans go… check with a local dry cleaner. Sometimes they do mending or repair. Get them to slice the sides open along the seam and sew in a black satin ribbon. That will get u the size up that you need. Ironically they will also match your mistake purse for an ‘elevated’ casual look. I like the idea of holding on to them as a reminder not to make the mistake again but you could at least get some use out if them.

I bought an apartment back in the 80s. I listened to other people telling me I would make a fortune. After I bought it interest rates went up to 20%. All my income went into paying the mortgage. I owned it for 10 years and in that time developers bought up many old houses in the area and built apartment blocks and flooded the market. After 10 years my old apartment was now worth hardly more than it cost me.
After all expences taken into account I made $4000, that's a bit over 1 dollar a day for the time I owned it. I would have been 100k better off if I'd left my money in the bank in my savings account.
It is false that you always make loads of money on real estate.

The house thing may come good in the long run. Just on buy once cry once, in the UK we have a similar saying "Buy cheap, buy twice." I can relate to the jeans thing but with me it's shoes. I have bought several pairs that rub my right little toe several of which have ended up in charity shops - I always thought I'll "wear them in" - amazingly this almost never works - if an item of footwear isn't comfortable from the start it will likely never be.

I was in car accident as a kid, and handed that money at 18. While I didn't do anything wild like go on mad shopping spree, etc, I did do things like go to school out of state and just basically waste the immense opportunity I had on tuition, rent and eating out. I am upset with myself but also like, wtf parents, why didnt ANYONE TELL ME ANYTHING?? I basically look at as if I did same as taking giant student loan, a mistake many college kids make. There were a lot of circumstances at play, and it is what it is. I also remind myself that probably if I HAD tried to invest then I'd have ALSO made some big mistakes. I only figured out the method of low cost index funds at a low cost place like now, 20+ years older, (cringe) so 18 year old me definitely had no chance. Financial regrets are really hard to process . I blame lack of youtube then! :D

I just got myself in deep oatmeal. I am a widow who lives on Social Security. It's not a bad amount since I've worked for over 40 years of my life. I have no savings though. I rent an apartment with my daughter and son in law. She's expecting a baby this fall.
I help with expenses of course. I have a lot of credit card debt. Now I borrowed money to help pay other debt. BIG MISTAKE!
Now they are taking money out of my account every month and I'm finding it hard to pay everything. DON'T BORROW FROM PETER TO PAY PAUL!! I'm not sure how to get out of this jam!!

My worst financial decision was using most of my paychecks for an entire year to buy clothing from where I worked at. It was around when I first started working, it was a relatively pricey retail store where jeans would be minimum 100 dollars which was something I never had the chance to wear. What justified me buying all these clothes was that they were good quality, which is still true. But...a lot of the items I got I rarely ever wore. To be fair, I was still unsure of what my style was at the time and still currently, but that experience did help me figure out items I would actually wear again and again. I have definitely learned a few lessons thanks to that! Love your videos and remember to be kind to yourself :)

When I regretted mistakes like this my Mum reassured me “At least you’re not making the same mistake twice.“. That was true so luckily I learned things. However, I have learned one biggie that you didn’t mention. Never, under any circumstances sign your name to anything (contract, loan, co-signature etc)that involves another person. Don’t sign on for a debt that you aren’t 100% sure of (ex. a spouse wants to buy a motorbike on credit and needs you to sign a loan app). Or, do not enter into a business with another person (even a spouse) if you have any trepidation at all. I have learned this the very hard way. Please can you do a video about the implications of cosigning (on your credit profile, on your relationships, on your future purchases). Hand in hand with this is not lending money unless you are willing to gift it to the borrower.

I think the reason why so many are impressed with you is that you have a very low percentage of bad financial decisions compared to most people. You generally seem to take a systematic approach to financial decision making which increases the odds of making good financial decisions (obviously the house decision wasn't made in your typical way). The majority of people do not take a systematic approach to decide making and this causes a lower success rate. Anyways, the absolute worst financial I made was marrying an abusive man at a young age and moving in with his family. He didn't allow me to complete my post secondary education. I took full-time care of his abusive mother who suffered from Parkinson's and fibromyalgia. Managed her medicine, physio, medically appointments, the 4000 sq home etc for 7 years. Worked for nothing at my husband's business for 5 years while he put everything in his name alone. My kids were taught to abuse me as well. It took over 4 years of court to get out of the situation and a lot of money. Left with no career and no resumee. not to mention the psychological/emotional damage.

You could totally sell those jeans even with the flaw. Since you paid less than they are actually worth you might even make your money back.
My two worst mistakes were combining all the finances when I got married and then living above our means. When that relationship ended I had no savings and a lot of debt. Took me years to dig myself out. The one good thing to come of that is that I am now a very mindful consumer and will always keep my own accounts.

I was only 24 when I bought it. My only house, lived in it for 36 years, getting older, wanted to downsize, then the market EXPLODED, 5 months AFTER I sold it. That hurts bad. I hear you on the house. I bought one while in the middle of a total rehab of my existing house (insurance water claim). I bought a total fixer upper that needed a lot of infrastructure done to begin with, along with its own water damage and alot of other issues. I finally put my first house up for sale while working on the new one and had two mortgages for about 6 months or so. It was nerve wracking! In the end i stopped paying on the original while having a buyer who was being a problem. What should have been a one month sale turned into 6 months or so! I was ready to just walk away from it if i had to. Most stressful time of my life. thankfully it all worked out though i am still working on my house a little at a time 6 years later. I only do cash which really slows things down.

Hi Nicole, congratulations on 100 videos and 20k subscribers. I'm sorry to hear you have had a break down. I had a severe break down a couple of decades ago. It was a really tough experience at the time and was the result of PTSD but also feeling stuck in some difficult circumstances. Now that I have the benefit of perspective, I can see that this experience was one of the most positive experiences I have had as it taught me so much and resulted in enormous personal growth and new insights that have improved my life. Regarding mistakes, everyone makes them but it is what you learn from them that matters. I have heard it said that the most successful people have made more mistakes than other people. Daring to try can often result in mistakes but is also the path to greater success. I appreciate your honesty and humility.

Thanks for the straight talk. I am child free-on purpose. I bought my first house at 23 with my grandmother’s help. I was able to take her name off my mortgage at age 29. I have big regrets when it comes to buying houses and selling them but by far my biggest regret is cashing in an RSP at age 38. I learned my lesson and have moved on. I hope you can move on too from your mistakes. I’m 50 now and I make a small income. I have learned that as long as I’m good living at poverty level, I’ll have enough to retire when I’m 65…not comforting! I value your honesty, experience and research. I have no one to discuss money with other than baggage-filled family or people that want to sell me something - so thanks for being the other side of the conversation for me.

Really enjoy your quirky authenticity and transparency. Thank you for such a thoughtful and valuable cautionary tale of the dangers of misguided consumerism. I think you should consider selling the Coach bag to rid yourself of the negative memories of the social pressure that prompted you to purchase it. Question: can you discuss your future debt-payoff and wealth building strategies.

I really enjoyed your video Nicole. I'm in a similar age bracket, (I'm 28) and (with similar purchase fails?) I can really relate to a lot of the things you are discussing in this video. Despite your sharing of some of the 'financial mistakes' you've made, what's most important is that we learn from them. You are very self aware and your ability to 'overcome' those financial mistakes, reflect and grow is amazing. You should be very proud of where you are at!

Great video Nicole and congratulations on reaching 20K subscribers! As for whether or not you are smart - I’d say you have & show intelligence, you are honest and can be shrewd in dealings with others and you are clever and witty. All that adds up to smart.
My biggest financial mistake was investing in mutual funds with an advisor who talked circles around me but who I thought was “all that and a bag o’ chips” because he had monogrammed shirt cuffs and fancy cuff links. I got sold the bill of goods from my parent’s generation - bankers have our best interests at heart and are smarter than we mere mortals. Oh so wrong - I still beat myself up regularly over that decision. Roboadvisors and online brokerages didn’t exist when I made that mistake.
It’s unfortunate that you had to go through such a pummelling when you bought your current house. It’s hard to weather a storm like that on your own - you are one tough cookie. So glad you’ve come out the other side and can keep on sharing your stories. Looking forward to the Q and A.

I started learning lessons early in life too. As a young married person I wanted to learn to cook (pre internet). I joined a recipes of the month club. Sent a large box and first dozen recipes. I figured out once the box was filled I had spent over $300! And I had about 10 recipes I actually used. 😂

Life lessons and growth often come with hard knocks. We all have them. Some big some small. You learn more from mistakes then you learn from what goes right. What makes a person is how they deal with it. Seems like you are doing fine, and it will all pan out. Do not be so hard on yourself. Give yourself some grace. I have done that with clothes. Done that with furniture too.

In 2004-2005 I invested a hefty sum of money to be participant in two containerships. They were in fact considered 'small' because they carried 1000-1400 containers. The ships were meant to redistribute containers that were brought to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to several places in Europe. The first few years were beyond my expectations. The interest rate that was paid twice a year was between 10 and 15%.
Then 2008 came, banks with bad mortgages went belly up and world trade came to a standstill. In a matter of three years my investments in the ships evaporated. Took me another three years of investing and saving to get back on my the former level. It was a dent of 20% of my total savings.

I could cry whenever I think about it. I’m also thinking of moving back again now that I have a cooler head but I’m really afraid it will be like the last time. 😢

My worst financial mistake: We were moving from Oshawa to Toronto, sold our house in Oshawa for $44,000 (yes, it was AGES ago) and bought for twice ($90,000) in Toronto. Our realtor calculated our debt servicing ratios and told us, "No problem, you can afford this house. It all works." (We did a vendor-take-back so no bank involved.) Anyhow, we moved and then our first mortgage payment was due and it took up 85% of my partner's take home pay -- and I was a stay-at-home Mom at the time!!! We were screwed. Dumbest mistake I ever made --- let someone else analyze and assess my finances and take their word for it.

About the couch. I've had many duds. I found that adding a favorite blanket or throw over the back and seating portions revitalized my experience(s). Be sure to overthink the weave, texture, color and grain of the covering fabric. Don't forget to make it pet friendly if your critters also find it a place of refuge ... great channel too.

My worst financial decision was a combination of a few mistakes. It was 1996 and I was in the Army getting ready for a deployment to Bosnia. For some reason, I decided to trade in my used car (that I still owed money on) for a brand new truck, fresh off the lot. But then I deployed a couple of weeks later and had to put the truck into storage, where it sat for 7 months. When I got back from Bosnia, in May 1997, I was in a very strange state of mind and decided that I didn't like the truck and wanted to trade it in for a new car instead. So, I did that. Not even considering the fact that I was heavily upside down on the truck loan and all of that debt just got rolled into the cost of my new car. Plus, I was still making monthly payments on the loan for the original car.
To be fair, however, the car I finally ended up with was great (it was a 1997 Dodge Neon). I loved it and it allowed me to make the 12+ hour drive from the Army post to my parents' house without any problems whatsoever. I have many fond memories of just driving around in that car, on the back roads of the military base, listening to techno music, and just feeling like life was perfect.
Eventually, I did voluntarily allow the bank to repossess the car, because I got sent to Korea for a year, in 2000, and my mail didn't follow me for the first 9 months in country. So, near the end of my time in South Korea, I was receiving stacks and stacks of late notices for every single one of my bills, every single day. When I got back to the States, I checked the balance of my car loan and, after 4 years of paying $335 a month on the loan (over $16,000 total), I still owed more than $9,000 on a $14,000 car. So, I let the bank take it and did without a car for a couple of years. I also declared bankruptcy in 2002 and wiped the slate clean of most of my debt. Even though I loved that car, it was the primary reason that I had to eventually declare bankruptcy.
So, yeah, worst financial decision of my life by far.

Worst financial decision(s) I've ever made: retail therapy to combat crazy work stress. My thought process was, maintain zero credit card debt and pay everything in full (purchases, rent, bills), and save some money, I'm good.
Fast forward 10 yrs....still can't afford a house and still stressed at work, still working on curbing the retail therapy thing. It's a vicious cycle that I hope no one finds themselves in.😢

I know of no one as lucky as me. I pity those who see life as anything but a fascinating miracle. Music alone freaks me out. A newborn baby is earth's greatest hope. A leather, reclining couch may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, although a nice, dark, gray color can actually look really sleek. But it is most definitely the absolute most comfortable indulgent couch I’ve ever owned. I too am on my second home. I first bought a townhouse and lived there for two years from 2019 to 2022 and sold it and then bought my current single-family home in January 2022 and I’ve been here for about two years now. I also got into some debt renovating. We have similar stories, however, I do think that you had quite a bit more suffering with the financial Front of it. I am still paying off debts as well but the value of my house has kept up pretty well despite what has been going on. I really hope that now things are better for you and that you are happy. You have a lovely home and you seem to be keeping up with your lifestyle very well.there is nothing like having your own peaceful home.
