    The weight of a broadhead although a deciding factor has some things you have to factor in.
    If your spine strenght is way too low too much energy transfer is lost from bow to shaft to tip.
    I remember here in SA we used to have a locally made 350gr broadhead especially for bushpig/warthog/kudu/Buffalo

      G'day,
      A young male Kangaroo grew too old to live with his mother and aunties, and at about 10 AM he set out..., at 14:00 I heard a .223 fired about a mile away, off to the Northeast, and I thought,
      "Shit, I hope that wasn't Dyson...".
      Half an hour later, a King Parrot showed up, getting in my face, attempting to communicate, but I don't squeak Parrot.
      At 18:30 Dyson hobbled into the Clearing, on one foot, his whole Right Ankle appearing to have been disarticulated and destabilised, with no apparent Wound... Initially I thought he must've broken his "Ankle" while hopping at speed over Rocky ground, trying to escape the Shooter.
      It took 24 hours before I realised that he'd been shot in the back of the Heel, from behind, and the Shockwave as the Hollowpoint broke up had broken the Capilliaries in all the Soft Tissue under the Skin, ripped all the Tendons, and left the whole back end of his Foot a necrotic avascular mess.
      And one cannot actually touch a wild Kangaroo, but he had grown up watching me irrigate his mother's wounds (Sterile Hypertonic Saline Solution via Garden Sprayer...), which had healed her 3 times in 3 years..., so he stood still for me to irrigate the Cavity, and he spent a lot of time with his foot buried in Charcoal in the Ash-Heap (which soaked up it's leakage and kept the Flies off it !).
      It took him 9 days of Palliative Care, before he died, from Septic Shock I reckon, from having been shot in the Heel, with a .223, at the top of the hop while trying to get away, on his first day away from home, as a 2 Yr-Old.
      If you backtrack me to my "Grey Kangaroos..." Playlist, you will be able to find the Videos, they form a little Series.
      Such is life,
      Have a good one...
      Stay safe.
      ;-p
      Ciao !

    Kind of disappointed we didn't get to see the Shartac in the plywood boards. It looks like it only penetrated two. He skipped over that part

    • @nevyngom8162
      @nevyngom8162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that was likely due to the whole rig tilting backwards due to the force of impact & causing the blade to deflect upwards. It could also be that Jorge inadvertently had a slight upwards cant while holding the bow which may have affected the trajectory
      A top plate with straps securing the whole rig to the box would hold it steady & likely cause the front boards to shatter under impact as this would also add rigidity to the individual boards
      Don't discount concussive force trauma & the much larger wound track which would ensure dropping a large animal faster & making for easier tracking with a significant blood trail for deer etc

    • @Slingshotchannel
      @Slingshotchannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Actually, few animals have six layers of bones... :)
      Seriously, the main difference is that the HUGE broadheads will simply break a leg bone on impact. Smash it to pieces. A normal broadhead will probably stick in the bone, but won't break it except for small game maybe. Dr. Ashby simply looked at the stopping power, and these flying meat cleavers did a much better job at that task. A normal broadhead will kill the game alright, but it may still run quite far after the hit.

    • @nevyngom8162
      @nevyngom8162 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Slingshotchannel That was my thought
      It's all about the concussive force & the wound track
      Should you manage to get the perfect double lung & heart through & through, the size of the broadhead could cause enough hydrolicshock to drop the animal on the spot which is the desired ethical kill
      Big fan of your show mate, loving your work from down here in Australia

    • @Slingshotchannel
      @Slingshotchannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is comparable to expanding (hollow point) bullets. The regular full metal jackets will penetrate way deeper, actually TOO deep, while the hollow points expand, cause a lot more damage and transfer all of their kinetic energy to the target.

    Zwickey Broadheads Has been making single piece broadheads for years. The heavier broadheads can be difficult to track correctly. That big broadhead will porpoise the arrow. If you want to know how in tune your bow, hang a piece of paper between top fixed boards. Shoot throw the paper at 5 yards. You will see what the arrow is doing. If you shoot through the paper and you see a hole with the fletching going straight through. the paper it is in tune. If the arrow kicks out left or right up or down you will be able to see that by how the arrow goes through the paper.

  • @minhducnguyen9276
    @minhducnguyen9276 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since he said it was meant to be used on large animal it makes sense the arrowhead has such a simple design. Not only it needs to make a large wound opening it also needs to go deep enough to cause internal bleeding so a smooth surface to reduce friction is ideal hence the arrow is just a grinded single piece of metal.

    A little tip, if you want to find center of mass of irregular long object, support it by your extended index fingers on the ends of the object, then slowly move your index fingers closer together. The one finger that is supporting the lighter ends will start slipping first, thus it will get closer to center of mass. It is self-regulating, the fingers will gradually start slipping first one, then the other and when they get close together, that's where the center of mass is. It works on arrows, brooms, etc...

    I can imagine why the single bevel goes deeper. It can be because the flat side has less contact area with the flesh, while two beveled is in full contact.

    Actually I practice at 40 yards with a 20 to 40-yard 5y graduation grid covering the bottom 2/3 of my targeting ring. And I am actually quite the large fan of forward weighted arrows making a habit of doubling the weight of my Broadhead with forward shaft extenders or balance doping in shaft with Lead Core. Effectively allowing me to strike with a heavier point. Or in the case of the doped Point double tap strike with a half inch slide in the double core effectively increasing the piercing properties of the Broadhead. And actually I find a magnetic bismuth core best as a sliding core. Also I always use bismuth pipe not solid core sliders due to gas compression issues. And yes resizing the bismuth must happen after every other shot give or take as my bismuth is mixed with line-a-type to avoid crystallization.

    • @johnshite4656
      @johnshite4656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even if they don't break you can still ruin the edge. Which is kind of the whole 'point.'

    • @jacoblaszakovits3035
      @jacoblaszakovits3035 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnshite4656 actually the whole point is the point, the edge cuts though more tissue but isn’t needed. You can actually puncture a-lot with just field tips as the tip being damaged is more damaging to the ability to penetrate than the edge.

    • @johnshite4656
      @johnshite4656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jacoblaszakovits3035 Maybe, but in this case that's a LONG edge and it's moving a lot of mass, not to mention the thickness of it. If the edge is chewed up it will snag rather than slice -- it may not matter THAT much in the end, but it wouldn't be ideal. This is a huge arrowhead and if its edges aren't razor sharp its penetrating power may suffer. Also, that point has a secondary bevel which creates a more obtuse point than it would have if the single bevel of the edges simply continued to the tip. Clearly the POINT of this POINT is to CUT. If the main idea were its penetrative power then it would just be a heavy bodkin tip with a narrower and thinner body so that there isn't so much material that has to pass through the target. If you want it to leave a wide wound channel AND penetrate deeply then you will want those edges to be sharp enough to slice paper cleanly.

    • @jacoblaszakovits3035
      @jacoblaszakovits3035 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnshite4656 you think the obtuse point effects penetration? Did you see how obtuse the field points were? Have you ever shot a field tip, if I had to guess that’s a no. A bunt tip will always penetrate deep. A shallow sharp tip will break easy. If you use a bow enough you quickly dull fragile sharp edges after a few shots. It’s not the sharp edges that help it go deep it’s the overall shape that’s why a chiseled edge is better it’s meant to be hammered and will hold an edge better but that doesn’t mean the edge is useful penetration just cutting a bigger wound canal which I don’t need when I’m just trying to put holes in your car

      It's about creating as large of a wound track as possible in Very Large animals which have thicker bone hence the bodkin is not used

Not something sold freely here to test with a comersial one.). However i am somehow confused by the thickness of those heavy broadheads - even with their great momentum they may get stuck in the plates.

    i mean if you have ever shot a gun the ballistics data is the "same" as for things like archery.
    the heavier the round the more the impact it will have and the "slower" it can be.
    the lighter the round the less of an impact it will have but the "faster" it will be.
    its like a 5.56mm compared to a .30 caliber round, the 5.56mm will do some damage but it will mainly just pass through depending on what you are shooting. to where most .30 calibers will do the same but cause way more damage going in and through than the 5.56mm.
    it works the same as the heavier the tip the more of an impact it will make causing tons of trauma in whatever it hit.
