  • This is a test of the 125 gr Slick Trick SB, single bevel head.
    Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 18 pts)
    I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 9.68 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.125" = 3.15 points pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.125” = 3.15 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.125" = 3.38 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 18.43 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 135 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +43 grams = 9.14/10 = 8.23 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 18.15 pts)
    There are 2 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8.5" = 9.44 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
    ( 61 layers= 8.71 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 17.45 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8.5/10 = 4.25 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (4/10 = 1.2pts).
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS:
    +.65 pts sharpness greater than baseline
    +.25 pts Modularity with 25 gr weight ring included
    TOTAL SCORE: 82.61 pts = 8 Golden Arrows
    Price: $26.67/head

      Thank you. I just want to provide some objective, consistent data points to help people make informed choices based on their hunting needs. I think that’s so much more effective than just asking a buddy or a few people at the boat shop reading the back of a package or even reading articles that have been paid for in magazines.

    I've been considering sb heads for a while. I've hammered 3 boars over 200lbs in the last month in the dark using montec for 2 of em and 1 annihilator. Maybe I'll buy a pack of these to try. I just worry about resharpening. Great test as usual.

    Yeah these look cool I seen them at Cabelas. I think the Ferrule on the 100-125 is T-6 aluminum and the heavier are steel

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s correct. The 100 grain without the collar is aluminum. And you can add a 25 grain collar to it. Or you can get the all steel model that is 125 grains by itself. Then you can add a collar to make it 150.

    • @danielkarcher7846

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures @scottm2244 is partially correct, the SB 100 and 125 have a T6 7075 ferrule and the SB 150 and 175 have a 17-4 stainless ferrule. all 4 SKUs (100, 125, 150 and 175) come with tungsten collars so you can adjust the total weight by 25gn, so the 100 can be increased to 125, the 125 can be increased to 150, etc. The blade geometry is the same on all 4 SKUs, but the 100 and 150gn heads have a vented blade where the 125 and 175 heads have a non vented blade. great review!

    Just a warning, on slick trick's website it says both the 125 base and the 100 base are 7075 aluminum, gotta go to 150 for the 17-4 stainless option!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, you're missing one part. There are two models:
      100 gr/125 gr--same head but the aluminum ferrule can add a 25 gr steel ring to get to 125 grs.
      OR there is the 125 gr/150 gr model. The ferrule is steel and the head weighs 125 grs. If you add the collar, you boost it up to 150 grs.

    @frankbrowning328 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A lot to like with every test except rotation. IMO single bevel heads need at least 0.060'' thinkness and have a steep angle bevel to get good rotation. Without good rotation you might as well use a 3 or 4 blade head to achieve more cutting

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It will definitely rotate much more in an animal. Some people prefer less rotation, as it allows for deeper penetration. But you make valid points, Frank.

      @frankbrowning328 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Yeah gel is more sticky that flesh except of course in the areas of tendons, tallow etc but those are just part of anatomy that can't be tested without actual hunting. Even at 360 fps with a heavy crossbow arrow and at least 125gr head every animal I've shot (out to 60 yards) has been a complete pass through (arrow stuck in the ground) regardless of the head. From fast spinning Helix, expandables like NAP and Rage, Exodus, Slick Trick and the list goes on. This incudes dual shoulder shots. At 420+ fps those arrows stick very deeply in the ground after full penetration.

      The 100 & 125 combination are aluminum. The aluminum ferrule can add a collar to make it 125. But the 125 and 150 are a different model. They are all steel. Without the collar it is 125 and with the collar it is 150. Does that make sense?
