    No luck on my elk season again but I went out with VPA 3 blades that I sharpened with DMT sharpening “stones” and a strop right before season and tonight I almost lopped the head straight off of a grouse at 20yds. Pulled my arrow out of the ground a my broadhead still spins true. Adult arrows are for grouse too, I guess.

    So true, so true Troy. I've been a certified volunteer bowhunting instructor for 20 years and many many moons ago one of the longstanding exam questions is something along the lines of, "Everything else being matched and tuned" what is the most important piece of bowhunting equipment to the bowhunter?" Of course the answer is the Broadhead. I enjoyed your video and it is very relevant and your point is backed by years and years of bowhunting knowledge and lore. The broadhead does the actual killing, everything else is secondary and so on. Spend more time on your broadheads and you'll be happy in the long run. Great stuff!!

    Mr ranch fairy I appreciate your honesty!! You don’t see that anywhere anymore!! Im going to be switching from a 100g muzzy replaceable 3 blade to either an adult broadhead lol rn im shooting a Dimond elite edge pro at #65 and im shooting a 250 spine element archery 29 1/2” arrow. My current setup is at 509 grains. Every deer I shot at last year ducked my arrows because I wasn’t aiming low enough I think. I thought it was cuz my bow isn’t fast enough but that’s not the case clearly. Your setup was only shooting 17 fps faster then mine an you was using a 300g broadhead. My question is do you think I should jump right in and get the 3 blade tough head or go with something different? I’ve never sharpened a broadhead but I’ve sharpened other stuff 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Adding silicone dioxide to your strop will help polish that Broadhead up in no time I’ve been woodworking for 30 years and can sharpen a chisel to the point where It’ll shave the hair right off your arm and that’s how sharp you’re looking for, so try adding silicone dioxide on your strop with your Broadhead . I’m also wondering how a water wheel will sharpen a broadhead that’s how I get a hollow grind cut on my bigger chisels makes them super sharp Great video as always happy hunting 😃👍

    How do you sharpen the broadheads that have a curved blade? Like the Crimson Talon Cleaver or the reverse curved heads like the Kudu?
    I currently use a round file like a rat tail and a half round on the Kudu and I use diamond plate knife sharpening stones for the Cleaver. I just don’t seem to be able to get them super sharp and can’t even begin to imagine how to strop a Kudu head! Any advise or direction to any video that you may have already addressed these heads would be appreciated! • @F14Goose37
    @F14Goose37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Troy, don't you know what all the experts say? A light draw weight bow is really going to suffer with a heavy arrow 😆
    In all seriousness though, what is your issue with FMJ shafts? Is it just that the high gpi makes it really hard to bump up FOC or is it something else? Quality control issues? I have been shooting them for a two years now and the only problem I have is bumping up FOC, but other than that, the couple dozen I have been through have been pretty great for me. Durability has been awesome and I have not had many troubles with tuning. I like how easy it is to scrape vanes and re-fletch as well. That really comes in to play after I retire a shaft to the practice arrow pile.
    Just curious is all. I have not had an issue that makes me want to reconsider my shaft choice, but I am open to thoughts, especially if somebody has thoughts that get me thinking in a way I wasn't before.

    • @ThatJamesGuy88
      @ThatJamesGuy88 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Troy talked about it in an earlier video. I think he said they take a bend that doesn’t come out? 🤷‍♂️

    • @deerhunter8537
      @deerhunter8537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also if just using the hit insert system, the shafts are vulnerable to the broadheads breaking out the sides of them on hard impacts, especially if it's at an angle

    • @F14Goose37
      @F14Goose37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the shaft losing straightness is something that does happen, but the problem is not that significant. Every shaft breaks down over time. I don't have any data on the comparative longevity, but I would imagine it stays straight longer than a standard aluminum shaft but not as long as a carbon. In practical terms though, I shoot around 500-600 arrows a week all year long and most of my arrows do not lose enough straightness to wobble with a broahead on from just shooting foam, even with thousands of shots. Usually where I have issues is if it takes a really hard hit, and that is usually when it wobbles and I only use it as a practice arrow after that. Even then, I have only ever had one arrow that was so bad that it was a consistent outlier in my 50 yard groups. It is not a pronounced enough ussue that I have ever considered changing.
      The HIT inserts have never been a real problem for me either. The jacket acts as a collar. It takes a serious hit to push an insert back in to the shaft and I have only had one or two of those ever. The thing that is good about the FMJ is that when that happens, pull the insert, cut about an inch off the shaft and pop a new insert in. Still good for a practice arrow. On a carbon shaft, usually the shaft is done on impacts like that, even with a collar behind the insert.
      I don't think the FMJ is the best shaft ever made, but I have had a better experience with them than any carbon shaft I have shot. They are worth a try. I like them. I will still probably tinker with other shafts because I like experimenting, but FMJs will still likely be my go to for the forseeable future.

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hit insert is a hard impact disaster waiting to happen. They micro bend. We left that about 20 years ago. They are also "heavy". Aerodynamically, you want a light arrow and the weight up front to maximize stability. Remember, the more stable the arrow flies, the more stable on impact.
      That being said, HIT is a terrible insert and #1 issue.

    • @F14Goose37
      @F14Goose37 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RanchFairy Thanks for that answer. I actually just switched to the brass HIT from an aluminum half out when I went to a 250 grain head from a 175. I don't have enough experience with them yet to say anything one way or the other though (I think when I originally posted, I was thinking half out while reading and writing HIT). I do intend to continue shooting them for now until I see something that makes me want to reconsider (I shoot in rocky, hard soiled Arizona desert. I am always just a soft spot on a worn out target away from a hard impact 😁). My experiences with the half outs were good though.
      My experiences have been very positive with the FMJ. I have considered switching before because of FOC, and I am always open to trying something new. I was just curious where your distaste for them came from. I will continue to take your thoughts in to consideration when building arrows. Thanks again, your voice is a positive contribution to the conversation regarding ethical hunting with archery gear.

    Ranch what do you think about the argument that arrow spine doesnt matter if you're shooting from a straight and tuned bow? You can take a 500 spine or 700 spine arrow and it will fly straight if the bow is straight and tuned?

    • @aaronward3882
      @aaronward3882 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each bow is tuned to shoot a specific arrow. Its not tuned to shoot all arrows

    • @WM-jy9dz
      @WM-jy9dz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's not only a pretty silly, but also very dangerous argument.
      The correct spine prevents the arrow from collapsing / breaking at launch - a correct tuned bow will actually make a bow more efficient and will transfer more energy to the arrow thus it will make the arrow even more likely to break if the spine is too weak. And it's not only about the STATIC spine that is printed on the arrow - the DYNAMIC spine (this is affected by FOC, length of the arrow, fletching, nock configuration, poundage) is even more important.
      These are basic principles of archery every serious archer should understand.

    • @georgewashington1621
      @georgewashington1621 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WM-jy9dz I've seen photos of weak spined arrows bent into almost a circle. An arrow will never snap from being pushed into air by a string. It will bend somewhat and go forward somewhat. Now ofcourse if you shoot like a 1200 spine arrow from a 60 pound compound bow the arrow will probably bend so much that the nock will snap, but the arrow will be fine.

    • @georgewashington1621
      @georgewashington1621 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Troy, your arrow weight (TAW) might be even lower: Apollo Supernova, 400 spine 8.17 GPI, 27" long --> 221 grain, heavy (?TBC) AL insert --> 30-35 grain, 300 grain BH ...that's 556 ...ad max. another 25 grain pending on lighted nock, choice of fletching etc. --> gets you max. to approx. 580 grain.... good to see you trying lighter arrows now 😁 ...the speed would be also a little bit higher for your 40# and 28.5" DL (?) ....should be around the 175 fps mark?.... FOC around 26%, 0.46 pounds*sec.
    If you want to increase the weight to 650 grain you would need an other insert - which you might have but you mentioned something like aluminum insert in the vid, and it also looks like an AL insert. With a TAW of 580 grain it would be still a reasonable balanced (wrt static vs dynamic spine) arrow, with 650 grain it becomes more borderline, for my taste I would use at least a 350 spine instead.
    ...The 650 grain TAW with the heavier insert would also bump up the FOC to nearly 29% (UFOC) so that would be a little challenging to get a bullet hole when paper tuning.
