  • On this episode, Seth and Neil are joined by Joe Thielen and Jayden Quinlan from our engineering and ballistics department. The topic is all things 6.5 PRC. We start with the history, dating all the way back to 2012, with some additional input from George Gardner of GA Precision. We cover the initial design and release of the cartridge and talk in-depth about the match and hunting applications. The 6.5 PRC is one of the most balanced hunting/long-range target rounds ever designed. If you are interested in the 6.5 PRC, then this episode is for you.

I certainly hope the 6.5 prc production increases exponentially because deer season starts in a matter of a couple months and the ammo is hard to find and when I do find it it crazy expensive. Looking forward to trying the 6.5 prc on deer for the first time this year.

One could even argue.... that the 6.5 PRC is a "reinvention of the wheel" or the older 6.5 Remington Magnum.
Short action, fat case, no belt, proper throating with a fast twist barrel, long throat to accommodate the longer 6.5 bullets..... all at similar velocities.
It's almost like everything that was "broke" with the 6.5 Remington Magnum, was fixed with the 6.5 PRC!
My 6.5 Remingtons ALL shoot well.... I look forward to checking out the 6.5 PRC someday!

I had Gap build a do-all 6.5 PRC for me and chose it over 4s for factory ammo options. It is a great rifle. About the time it arrived, the ammo dried up…I should have bought a .308 or enough reloading components for a barrel life. I hope you can catch up on ammo soon. I really want to love this rifle and cartridge.

Just about everything is back on the shelves, but finding 6.5 PRC ammo is still damn near impossible. It's one of the most popular calibers for new gun sales - how is Hornady (and others) somehow not getting that message and ramping up production? The supply/demand still seems way out of wack for PRC.

Kind of a newbie here, getting my first hunting rifle shortly, want to choose a caliber that'll serve my interests but also that I won't want to replace after a year. I want to get something that will take a deer or elk within ~200yds, which is most hunting calibers, but I also want something that's good at long range (~600yds at best). I thought a 6.5 PRC would be better than a 30-06, but I have to get good at my rifle, so ammo costs would be really high. I still prefer the stats on 6.5PRC over the 30-06. Is 6.5PRC, after two years since this video, going to be more common & cheaper? It seems to dominate most rounds for recoil/velocity/ft.lbs/flat range, so why is the 6.5CM so much more popular? Ron Spomer does a good video of 6.5PRC vs .270, but I can't shake my desire for the 6.5PRC. Ammo costs have to come down. I don't mind paying a premium, but it's almost double the cost.
    Good video, guys, thank you.

I had 6.5x55s from 1998 till 2023. Hunted and handloaded with 3 of them. Is a 30-06 a 300 win mag? Just because it's the same caliber doesn't mean anything. I don't have 6.5x55s now, I have 2 6.5 PRCs and the Browning has a scope on the way. The Bergara has 100 rounds through it now. You tell me if these numbers sound familiar to you. Bergara premier approach 24 inch 130 grain factory terminal ascent 3150-3180 fps. That's the reality of what the PRC is doing..The Hornady 143s are close to 3000 fps. I have chronographed on two different occasions. Numbers are going up as the barrel gets faster. And now I have a 26 inch Browning to play with. Oh if you didn't recognize those numbers...it's the same as a 264 Win mag...not a 6.5x55.

🤠 Ronbo (Montana Mountain Man) - Luckily, I hunt with a 270 Winchester, so I don't have that problem! 🤭 I paid $27.99 per box for Horneday Superformance Ammunition last fall in 130 grain GMX, 130 grain SST, and 140 grain SST factory Ammunition! 🤑 In Factory Ammunition, the 270 Winchester actually shoots flatter than anything currently available out their for the 6.5 prc and at a much lower cost! 😜 If I reload with Magpro or Reloader 16 (not just using Superformance Factory loads), I can also get well over 3,200 ft/s with both 130 grain loads using a 130 Nosler Ballistics Tip! If I step down to a 110 grain Nosler Accubond or Barnes ttsx and use Norma 204 powder, the 270 Win is capable of pushing those bullets over 3,500 ft/s! If I step up to a 150 grain and use around 60 grains of Reloader 26, I can get well over 3,000 ft/s with it (I use the 150 grain Nosler ABLR and 150 grain Swift A-Frame for elk)! However, I share your concerns with both the cost and availability of the Ammunition for the 6.5 prc! I haven't been able to find primers in the last several years, so I am forced to buy Factory Ammunition until I do! 😡 On a recent road trip around my state, 1 month ago, I went to over 100 gun stores and saw NO 6.5 prc Ammunition on the shelf! 🤯 Those that have found it have, just like you, remarked on it's extremely high cost! ☹ It doesn't help Hornaday to promote the cartridge and then not keep it available at a reasonable price! 🤪 So, Horneday, why are you doing this? 🧐 Your consumers want to know (and you are not doing this cartridge any favors, if you want it to succeed)? 🕵️‍♂️ Well, what is the problem? 🤷‍♂️

I like what Hornady was trying accomplish with the 6.5 PRC. However, back in 2017 you have a video of George Gardner on your channel stating that the 6.5 PRC is the best option to run high BC bullets in a short action. I feel that Hornady rushed this cartridge to market without looking at the possibility of future bullets such as the 156gr Bergers or Hornady's own 153gr A-tip. These heavy bullets need to be seated deep in the 6.5 PRC case to be magazine fed in a short action. I would like to see Hornady adopt some of the 6.5 Sherman Short cartridges. These cartridges are much more well suited for a short action. I seen load data on 6.5 SST that gets at 156gr Berger to 3020fps and the 147gr ELD-M to 3100fps. While the Sherman cartridges have no SAAMI standard, I think they could be made to SAAMI standards and run around 60-65ksi. Hornady should definitely consider looking at these cartridges.

🤠 Ronbo (Montana Mountain Man) - I want to Congratulate Horneday on the choice to make the 6.5 prc, 6.5 Creedmore, and 6 Creedmore! And also to remind you of WHY these cartridges are so successful, as to INFLUENCE YOU on Any Future Cartridge Development as to WHY that is so! If you look at the Best Selling/Most Popular Cartridges in the Following Calibers, You Will See a Pattern: 30 caliber - 308 Winchester; 7mm caliber - 7mm-08 Remington; 270 caliber - 270 Winchester; 6.5 caliber - 6.5 Creedmore; 6mm caliber - 243 Winchester (mabey the 6 Creedmore, some day?); and the 223 Remington! What do ALL THESE CARTRIDGES HAVE IN COMMON? They are ALL MILD RECOILING CARTRIDGES! Why? Because the VAST MAJORITY OF HUNTERS AND SHOOTERS DON'T WANT to hunt/shoot/or need self defense with A BIG MAGNUM, unless it is absolutely necessary! For most of us, especially if we hunt in the lower 48 states, it isn't necessary! So, if you WANT TO MAKE THE MOST MONEY AND DOMINATE THE MARKET, keep your FOCUS ON THE MORE PLEASANT SHOOTING CALIBERS! Most of us will never be going to Alaska or Africa to hunt dangerous game anyway! Besides, my Grandfather killed Grizzlies (and Record Book Bison, Moose, Elk, Sheep, Mount Goats, etc...) all with his 270 Winchester! That would include more than 500 elk while working on the firing lines near Yellowstone Park culling elk herds (Including Alot of Very Big Bull Elk)! So, nothing more is needed for lower 48 game animals! Certainly not those "Big Magnum Cartridges", even though I've owned a few (I found it out from 45 years of hunting experience and from my Grandfathers before me)! They are not worth your time, effort, and money! Nope! Let's keep the cartridges "practical" and the prices "reasonable"! 😁

So with the evolution of the 6.5 prc, and with the 7 mil PRC coming out. How will that affect the people who is having trouble finding 6.5PRC ammo? Would the design of the 7mil PRC overshadow the 6.5PRC, would that make the 6.5PRC obsolete even though the 6.5PRC is still relatively new on the market and people are still hesitant on getting a rifle chambered in 6.5PRC. I know I would love a 6.5PRC but hesitant on investing in the caliber not knowing if that caliber will stay around. Is more ammo manufacturing companies going to start making 6.5PRC rounds to buy?

200-260fps faster with the same bullets, meaning flatter trajectory, less wind drift, still fits inside a short action. Recoil is astonishingly-low with it too. I expected it to punch more, but it's a pussycat in the shoulder, and I've only shot it from a Carbon Fiber rifle so far.

I have a 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro with a 23" barrel (muzzle to receiver W/O brake). with its pencil thin fluted stainless steel barrel it will give 3/4" to 1/2" groups at 100 yards FOR THE 1st THREE SHOTS. Then the skin barrel heats up and groups open up to 1" and 1.25". Still that's not bad and if I can't get my game with 3 shots I need to find another hobby.

🤔 Since I shoot a 270 Winchester in your 130 grain CX, which replaced your 130 grain GMX, WHY does it have a "Significantly Lower Ballistics Coefficient" - when all you did was add the heat shield tip to it? 🤷‍♂️

So, Why would your "Upgrade" be a Significant "Downgrade" in it's aerodynamic abilities? 🤪 It makes no sense, unless their GMX was initially overrated in it's aerodynamic abilities? But, I want to here the Truth from them! 🤔

The 130 grain GMX bullet has a B.C. of 0.460 and the 130 grain CX bullet has a B.C. of 0.403! If the only thing that changed was the heat shield tip, the B.C. should not go down! What is up with this? 🤷‍♂️

    • @hornady
      @hornady  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@ronlowney4700 the GMX BC was derived using an older method. With the CX, the BC is found with doppler derived data and more accurate. If we were to use the new method on the old GMX, the BC would be lower. The relief grooves on the new CX and the new tip absolutely give it a better BC.

In general, costs and availability are the reasons that I haven't bought a gun, primers, bullets, brass..... since 2020.
Whenever that all changes for the better, one of my first purchases will be a 6.5 PRC. Another recent "newbie" cartridges will be a 360 Buckhammer rifle (s) and cartridge.
This 6.5 PRC is really the only 6.5 cartridge that really caught my attention of late. The Creedmore never did because it was just a reinvention of the wheel.... the 260 Remington.
Now, what's wrong with pushing the 7mm PRC's shoulder back about about a 1/4", leaving a slightly longer neck, and sizing it down to 6.5mm?
It would be a more modern 264 Winchester magnum, in a long action.
It would have the "magic chamber throating" of your PRC cartridges, quick twist rifling, the longer neck to make it adaptable to ALL bullet lengths... but with the larger capacity for (maybe) higher velocity than the 6.5 PRC.
