Great video, I bough mine in November 2021, evidently it had little maintenance done, I've been doing the service myself, only thing I haven't changed is this fluid, I had to change the differential, (had my mechanic do this one, since I don't have the room and back there I did not have the skills), did not ask if he changed said differential fluid. That's a great dog assistance by the way. Great job!
Quick tip measure how much came out and put the same back in with fresh fluid your most likely gonna be buying the Diff fluid from a dealer they know how much it needs aswell if your unsure spill till you fill is ok but there's more precise ways of doing things and less messy also
Been filling to the spill for 35 years. Measuring the drain amount is useful for transmissions for sure. We have a Honda 9 speed automatic service coming up and I will be measuring for that one.
The VTM-4 fluid is transmission fluid. Use your favorite brand. NAPA sells Eneos dual pump fluid if you don't want to buy from dealership. Amazon sells many different suction guns or fluid extractors You can pour the lubricant into them then force into differential or transfer case. If you own a Pilot don't forget to service the transfer case!
Im sure its okay but since this is only a once every 50K mile job, I would not skimp to save a few dollars. Especially with a 2019 that's still under warranty. You risk voiding it.
Thanks! It seems like it came with some gear oil I bought some time ago. I hoard stuff like that and don’t recall exactly where it came from unfortunately.
What's weird is the owner's manual and the official service manual call for CVT fluid in the rear diff for the first gen CR-Vs. The dealership says dual pump fluid. I went with dual pump fluid.
I have a 1998 Honda CRV. I'm starting to hear some "creaking" from the back of the car when I first start the car up and start moving. Just for the first 20 ft or so and then I don't hear it. I wonder if it's the rear differential fluid. I called a standard oil change place to ask if they would drain and fill it for me if I got the rear diff oil and they said they charge $150 for changing it. Really? After watching the video, seemed like the easiest thing in the world to do.
If it happens when turning, the fluid most likely needs changed. If you don’t know the service history, it needs to be done anyway. This is an easy service if you have access to tools or someone that can lend a hand.
La notice honda indique de faire une double vidange. On remplit une premiere fois, on fait tourner les roues a vide sur le pont en avant et arriere et on vidange à nouveau .
@@kauffmansgarage also odd question but where did you get the little nozzle that you screwed onto the bottle? I don't feel like buying a whole pump kit.
Thanks! I didn’t have washers at the time so the old ones stayed in place. You have a valid point and it’s always good to replace the crush washers. They didn’t leak thankfully.

You’ll need two quarts for a complete fill, stop when it starts to drain back out of the fill hole. I think a quart is just a bit more than a liter so you’ll need two liters.
Hey I just changed mine yesterday 1st time on a 2019 crv. We are the original owners and the fluid came out very dark is that normal for 1st change. Thanks
Hi I have a 2019 crv awd. I was a little late with differential fluid change and did it at 19k miles. The fluid came out very very dark almost looked like motor oil. Is this normal ?
It came with some gear oil I purchased a while back. It does not come with the Honda fluid but you may be able to find something similar at your local auto parts store.
Hi, We had our propeller shaft removed a long time ago but left the rest of the rear differential parts intact. For maintenance purposes, is it still necessary to replace differential oil?
There are still bearings in there that require lubrication. If this is not a “forever” vehicle for you I’d skip it. If you plan on reinstalling the driveshaft and using the 4wd, I would change it.
If i only jack up the back of my crv to give myself room. Will that not cause the differential to be uneven so that when i go to fill it with new fluid it wont fill to the proper level due to it be un level.
Crush washers are cheap and really a one time use. If I have to re-use one, I’ll flip it and put the side with the flat surface away from the plug head.
Almost seems impossible since this system is based on front wheel slippage. Get into some gravel or mud and let it rip to see what the rear wheels do and have a friend watch or set up a camera. If it really doesn't work, you may have some internal problems in the rear differential.
@@kauffmansgarage I've watched many videos on this job and I've seldom seen it fill up that fast. Usually it's clear that some of the 2nd quart is needed.

That a great video, question please sir. The car was not level would that make a difference to amount of oil left in?
Yes it will
47Nm is the spec the service manual gives for both the drain and the fill plug. In the US, you need to convert it into some non-scientific unit.
Converts to about 35 lb ft. Good info!
