- In this episode, I replace the rear differential / diff on my Honda CRV. This is the "best" OEM upgrade for the 97-01 Honda CRV. This is the same process for replacing your differential with another factory rear differential.

I’ve always said Hondas are legos for adults 😂
Facts
Great vids so far, glad to see the RD1's getting some much needed love recently
Thank you
Man you make this stuff look easy. Thanks.
Lots of practice 😁
Awesome videos with great detail and explanations. Definitely gonna use this one when I replace the diff in my rd1. Thanks
Thank you, glad it helps
Nice work! Waiting for the testing video 👍
Coming soon!
Did you publish your conclusions?
Great video! Will be doing this whenever I get the chance
Thank you!
Man that was cool nice work
Thank you
Can’t wait to see the difference
Me too. Trying to get some suspension stuff worked out so I can get to working on testing
Man I wish you lived closer. I would come over as a helper for free to learn stuff.
Heck yeah😂
I just put in a element diff in my rd1 and it really does make a difference. It kicks in a lot smoother and better going though mud and gravel.
Heck yeah!
What year diff did you use?
Its really good I have one, but i did a ptu upgrade from blacklisted crv. it allows for even faster dual pump engagement with the ramp up assembly but it requires major disassembly. Its worth it for the price he sells them for, i did it in my rd1 diff and it helped tremendously with engagement. I'm waiting for really harsh winter to kick in for me to actually tell how good the 3rd gen diff really can be in the rd1
Nice!
I can confirm this works. I just made the same swap, from 1-st gen to 3rd gen rear diff, not long before this video came out.
Initially (few first trips) there was some binding felt at the full lock turns on the pavement (only when going forward direction), but then I got used to it or it disappeared, have not noticed it any more (or maybe because the snow came, and now only driving on packed snow). (It might have been that the diff had been sitting dry on the shelf for some time).
For technical information: the gear ratios are not the same (I counted the teeth) but this is by design and intentional, to allow for the one way clutch to engage hard when going forward (and bypass the hydraulic system).
1st gen gear ratio is 38:15 about 2,533..
3rd gen gear ratio is 41:16 about 2,5625
Anyway the improvement during the winter is there (and quite nice). Previously there was mostly understeer in the corners, but now it is more easily possible to induce the oversteer (and drifting) with the gas pedal. So quite happy about it (also my old diff was leaking oil, so I got this fixed and got even better variant).
Will it work for any spec like ex or other two
would this aid in hill climbs? I have a homie with an RD1 and its lifted and hits the trails but his biggest down fall is the low end when climbing. It just gives out and doesn't have power to keep going mid climb, we've talked about doing the Vtec heads but have recently been talking diffs. I only really know about truck stuff lol. With how the Honda AWD system works does would a different gear ratio even help like I'm thinking it would in a open diff RWD/4x4 truck?
So crazy it just bolts it, glad I seen this bc I need a rear diff and was getting one soon. Now Ik I can grab a 3rd gen instead.
Yep, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Gen. All years Honda element and Honda crosstour will work. 3rd Gen and crosstour are the best
I was looking at the Facebook, the Reddit and the instagram feeds about the “ramp system” and it’s pretty cool it’s a direct swap into the car that initially came with the Real time “awd” here in the U.S., then came the element, 2nd gen crv. The 07-11 crv and the cross tours I believe have the “Ramp” hydraulic clutch packs. The Hrv also has this system
yeah, I'm anxiously awaiting trying it out.
Always good advice, it's 2007-2013 CRV the CRV III ? I'm in France and your videos and ideas also help me here :),
the feelander trees are much more expensive than the CRV 3 bridges :) I'm thinking of testing this
maybe the CRV III driveshaft is ok on RD1 ?
Great videos
Thank you
I've used your videos for all my maintenance!!! Thank you! Any advice for rear trailing arm bushings?
Thank you, I like the hardrace bushings. I definitely recommend the press for them too
Its crazy how little rust you have wherever you are lol. So cleeeaan
I'm in Alabama
@hondaresource that must be great haha!! Up in Maine once the snowflies the RD1 stays in the garage :( the amount of salt they throw is unbelievable
Great job, we’ll be waiting for the off-roading video with the 3rd gen diff.
Yes I’m waiting for the same thing
nice joob,i like to apply more power instante engaging early, any thing to modify on pump assembly springs?
lol they work .. it bolts right up.. i had RD1 with a GSR turbo with custom driveshaft on freelander and 2006 crv rear end with locking plates.. that i sold for a while now..
I have a freelander viscous on my other CRV
OMG I thought that the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen use different axle ratios, it will be impossible to swap them out… lol I was completely wrong 😑 awesome video Thx so much
It really helps that change ?!
Hey buddy love the channel. I have a 01 crv. Do you have instructions on replacing front differential. Mine is grinding. Doesn't look difficult but would love to watch a walk through.
I'm getting ready to buy truhart suspension parts for my 98 rd1 crv 😎👍
Nice!!
I watched you video from most common problem of Honda crv to upgrade the diff and replace drive shaft...
And just bought a same color and same year of honda cvr with same problem, and I want to learn how to fix it
Awesome! I appreciate you checking out the videos
Let me know how the 3rd gen diff works out and whether it really makes a difference doing the swap.
Always enjoyable looking at your videos although I wish you were my neighbor I'd rather just hire you to do this for me
Thanks!
How many miles should I expect out of a 2009 AWD before having issues with the AWD or rear end? Not sure I need AWD but if it is highly reliable I would consider it. (edit) Just watched more of your vids and yea uh I guess you are putting them to the test. LOL Get it!!!
would i be able to change the bushings for the subframe without completely taking everything off? i would see why not with the pancake looking ones since its just the one bolt going through them but im concerned with the ones inside the actual subframe mount itself. thank you. dealership wants to charge me like 10 hours of labor haha. just want to change them because theyre creaking badly
I putting a 3 inch hrg lifted iny 2006 Honda crv everything went good but those bottom back bolts for the stuts .man
Oh yeah. The bolts get frozen in the bushings and spin the bushings
Happy black Friday Mr Babb haha 😂. I'm seeing this meow
Morning Kev
Very cool upgrade. Interested to hear how it handles after this, if there are any noticeable differences. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family 👍
Thank you, you as well. I'll be posting some comparison videos soon.
How do you like your new diff ? Is it noticebly better ? My rd1 rear diff is litlle bit howling in higher speeds but the bigger problem is when front wheels spin and then the rear pull the noise is very very loud like squeeling. Do you know what can help? I dont know if the clutches are sliping or what.
Great vid, Tyson Fury😂
Thanks 😅
Hey Phillip, nice upgrade isnt it. I did this on my lowered crv a few years ago. However I ran into slightly binding on full lock turns, after swapping in the 3rd gen diff. Maybe it was just because i was very low, i'm not sure. The binding wasnt that bad and drove like it for a year before selling the car.
Have you had any binding issues? cheers
This has also happened to me on stock height. Been about a year and it makes a pretty rough sounding creak noise only at full lock
Secret is out
Is there a difference between 2nd gen and 3rd gen rear diffs internals?
Great video, I’m about to look for an rd1 so all the upgrade videos the better. What is the benefit of the 3rd gen diff. Just is less sluggish?
Gen 3 diff engages faster
@@hondaresource what are your thoughts on an lsd and quick spool upgrade?
Both would be beneficial
What is the benefit of doing this swap?
If I pop the axles out to mount the new diff, but also plan to do axles and bearings, is it gonna hurt the situation them not being plugged into the new diff? How would you do diff and suspension work? Do I have to do those jobs separately or can I do it at once? Not sure if that all makes sense lol
So when I pushed the wheels away from the diff, my axles completely fell apart 😂😂 I got a feeling this is gonna be trouble when I try and get the axle nuts off later. Not 100% sure how much of the axle stayed through the drum, bearing and hub but I’m calling it a day and hitting it early tomorrow. Also when I unbolted the lca’s they were still stuck in there really good so I jack up the whole job assembly a bit on both side and they popped out with some force and I’m not seeing how the heck ima be able to force it all back in place. Think ima have to dismantle the whole thing when new axles get here tomorrow
So I watched the driveshaft ‘sequel’ to this, but no testdrive. What was the effect of the new diff? You make it look so simple, that I want to try it, but not waste a lot of money if it makes no difference to have a new diff.
I haven't been able to do any testing yet. Revamping all the suspension currently
Второй привод и рычаг можно не откручивать, отсоединится сам, при откручивании и опускании редуктора.
I wonder if the first gen Ridgeline diff works and if it's any good.
No it won't work
Dang, I'm impressed. Too bad my CRV is a 2000FWD Automatic LX. I call it a laundromat washing machine, it just works.
They are awesome vehicles with proper maintenance
What's the best way to replace broken front lugs on my 1st gen crv?
Best way is to remove hub, which requires a new bearing. I've seen people grind for clearance.
Can I install my rd1 diff block to get both wheels to lock on the 3rd gen diff??
you should be able to
Let us know how the upgrade goes. Interested now to do this on my 2000 CRV.
Will do. I have a couple more things I'm doing before I can actually test it
@@hondaresourcedo automatics and manual CRVs have different gear ratios
@@jamestyndall529 no. same engine, if the engine was different it would be for the trans, all of this diff style 97-11 are the same ratio. All rear diffs are the same apart from the dual pump or with or without a ramp up system but only 97-2011. 2005.5-2011 have ramp up systems, ALL element diffs and 02-05 crv are just slightly upgraded RD1 diffs with better dual pump and clutch packs.
not on the rear differential@@jamestyndall529
Any binding issues or does it drive like oem?
Better than oem, but to answer your question there is no binding
@@hondaresource Thank ya
Thought he said drunk yard😅
She difference
ever had issues with your rear axles binding with the lift?
no never
@hondaresource Damm. I'm having issues with my awd crv. Axles are binding with 2.5 inch lift and 1 inch trailing arm spacers
Hey bud where can I find a half shaft for a 97 Honda crv.. I can’t find or source the part can’t u point me in the right direction please. !
Auto or manual?
Is that 3rd gen crv diff better than the diff that comes in the honda element or is it the same thing?
its different and far better. From 2005.5-2011 they implemented a ramp up assembly to speed up engagement. element diffs are upgraded rd1 diffs, better clutches and slightly better dual pump. you can visually tell by the front case, the ramp up diffs are much bigger and thicker.
Awesome, thanks for the reply man!! Love the videos 🤙
@@Michal_S0Ldoes this work on every spec on the 2001 crv
i am new to this stuff and i wanna know if i can put a 3 gen rear dif on a second gen crv, i will buy next week a second gen crv and i am curious about that
Yes, just put your diff mounts on the 3rd Gen diff
@@hondaresource thank you for the info, love all honda cars, i own 2 civics now, one ej2 and ek3, new member to the family will be definetly first or second, i have to see both 1 crv and second crv i am not sure what to buy
@@hondaresource i will use as a daily and occasionaly i will go offroading but not lifted or anything like that, idk, it s for comfort and space, i guess the second gen is a lil bit better in daily driving
So how has the new diff gone so far?
I still haven't gotten to test it. Been working through the suspension. Finally got it situated. Getting alignment next week
I take it this is going to work for a -04 as well then?
Correct
Interest piqued. Would you say a job like this can be done on Jack stands without too much agony + as a beginner? lol
Yes for sure
are the 2009 and 2011 same diff internally?
Yes
I'm assuming all of em' have the same gear ratio?
Yessir,
I hear honda pilot would be a real upgrade...heard the newer crvs where trash on the awd.
Pilot diff is not interchangable without heavy modification
Говорят самый крутой редуктор это intrac, They say the coolest gearbox is intrac.
We don't have that in the US
is this on a B series?
Yes
@@hondaresource waiiit 2007 crv is k series ain’t it tho? That’s the year of the new diff right it’s a 2007 crv diff k series diffs can work on b series? I thought they rotated different or some some pls lmk:)
@@user-oe3mb2um7x they are 100% compatible.
"Can we replace the generation 2 differential with the generation 3 one?"
yes, direct fit

awesome video! question: how about changing out the particle separator (transx filter) on a mdma awd auto? any videos on a how to? i got a 2001 awd. any news from you is a blessing. do i have to tear down the transx just to change a $28 part is what i am asking
Nope, you have the take transmission apart
@@hondaresource how much clearance is appropriate to drop the tranny? how much should i lift it and put it on blocks or jack stands? maybe 20 inches is good?
@@hondaresource thank you so much for the information. would you happen to know of a link to a schematic? i cannot find one even in the shop manual, maybe i'm just overlooking it or just plain dumb. any help is much appreciated my friend. 🙌
I don't, sorry man!
